How to upgrade Energy preference pane?

Hey,
So, you know the Energy preference pane that let's you switch between the two graphics chips?
I don't seem to have that. I'm still stuck with the generic version. I'm guessing this is an artifact of my carbon copy restore from my previous laptop? In any case, I was wondering if there's a way to manually upgrade the preference pane -- or tell the system to probe itself for goodies.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

kasey_junk,
I'm going to go further than eww's reply: Format (erase) your internal hard drive, then reinstall OS X from the "Software Restore" disks that came with the new Macbook Pro. This problem with the Energy Saver preference pane is just one problem you will encounter when attempting to run an OS from an earlier model. Save yourself the headaches, and install the one and only build of OS X that is designed to operate on your new Macbook Pro; namely, the one that is provided on its machine-specific Software Restore disks.
If you need advice on how to migrate your data from the older installation, we can provide that.

  • How to uninstall new preference panes from system preferences?

I recently got a new mouse from Logitech, and I installed the downloadable drivers to take advantage of some of the extra features. However, it doesn't work well at all, and it's added a new preference pane titled "Logitech Control Center" that completely overrides my preferences in the "Keyboard and Mouse" settings. Does anyone know how to uninstall new preference panes that are not factory-installed? I noticed that I can right-click the Logitech Control Center icon, and an option comes up for me to "Remove the preference pane," but I'm not sure if this will simply remove the icon from System Preferences without actually uninstalling anything. If anyone can give me some help I'd greatly appreciate it!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It will only remove the pref pane but will not uninstall anything.
I'm not familiar with the Logitech software, but I'd use Spotlight to search for it and delete whatever whatever you find. Or, better yet or use Logitech support.

  • My battery icon has disappeared from my menu bar at the top of the screen and the energy saver preferences simply says 'Could not load Energy Saver preference pane'

My battery icon randomly disappeared a few months ago from my menu bar and i have been unable to make it come back. After researching solutions online it soon became clear that all of the suggestions needed me to go into the energy saver preferences in the setting however the icon for the energy saver preferences is no longer there and whenever i click in the blank space where it used to be, it simply says 'Could not load Energy Saver preference pane'. As a result of this i never know how much battery i have left and so i just have to wait for the machine to die each time
The mac in question is a 13 inch 2012 macbook air that is running on OS Mavericks at the moment.
Any ideas on how to get the icon back?
    - I recently discovered by accident that before i actually log into my account on my mac, when i am still on the page that contains the options of guest user etc. at that point the battery icon is displayed in the top right hand corner? Why is it that the icon exists there but not once i have logged it? Thankyou for any advice.

  • Not able to access desktop preference pane after Yosemite upgrade

I upgraded my early 2008 Mac Pro to Yosemite and now I can't change my desktop image or even access the preference pane for it. When I try to, I get a message that says "Preferences Error - Could not load Desktop and Screen Saver preference pane." It looks like my desktop.plist have disappeared. Does anyone know how to fix this?

when I loginto EM, Application Policies > Create Application Grant
here it is asking for grantee and permissions. if I click + to add grantee and search for weblogic....there I got it.
    if I try to add permission.........here I can see 1.permissions 2. resources
I dont know what to select from above for presentation server admin role....there are so many options out there.
another question is I want to remove Administrator user because there is no more Administrator here in 11g and BIAdministrator is a role can have multiple users ex: weblogic, obiadmin etc.
so can I remove Administrator user in EM and create new user i.e 'obiadmin' and grant full admin access just for obiee and em. and weblogic user can only access admin console .....????
    appreciate for your help!
    Thanks

  • Preference panes for Magic mouse and Trackpad not upgraded

Hi I upgraded my i5 iMAC27'' to Lion and the bluetooth track pad and magic mouse do not support any gestures.  I have looked at all the similar threads but none seem similar to mine as I do seem to have the correct preference panes for these devices.  It seems to just have really old panes from snow leopard.
Anybody know how I can fix this ?

Just tried a copy of a working reference pane from macbook air (2011) and it looks juts the same.  The problem is deeper than the pane file itself.

  • How can I delete old (non-active) email accounts that don't show in the Accounts Preferences pane?

Since I (reluctantly) abandoned MobileMe and switched to iCloud, when I use Mail Connection Doctor because a problem is indicated with one or more of my email acocunts, it shows both iCloud IMAP and Me.com SMTP accounts. The iCloud account is fine but the SMTP acount has a red button against it.
So Connection Doctor shows the old SMTP account always failing to connect (of course - as it's been abandoned). However, this account does not show up in the Accounts Preferences pane so I am not able to delete it. This also happens with another account which I deleted in the Preferences pane some time ago.
How can I stop these phantom accounts appearing in Connection Doctor? It's very irritating to constantly have faults indicated which apply to abandoned accounts.
    Thanks people!

Go to your iCloud account in Preferences>Accounts. Set the 'Outgoing mail server (SMTP)' drop-down menu to 'Edit SMTP server list'. Then:
Set the server name as shown here. Then click the Advanced tab and check the settings.
If you are still having problems, you could start the setup again from scratch. Assuming that your signature is correct and you are running Leopard, delete any iCloud or MobileMe accounts in the list and then follow the instructions here:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard

  • Printers and Scanners preference pane does not work after Mavericks upgrade

I upgraded to Mavericks on my late 2011 MacBook Pro, and my printers and scanners preference pane stopped working. Sometimes it comes back as an error and wont open, other times it opens but the list of printers is obscured and not really showing, and it does not react normally. I tried reinstalling from System Restore with the onlie version, but that just took 6 hours but did not really help. I am going a little crazy as I cant get my Canon MX330 scanner installed and recognized. Does anyone have any ideas for me please??

I'm assuming that you're referring to the Printers & Scanners in System Preferences (not a preference pane, which is a different animal).
While I haven't experienced your issue, one thing that users find helpful is to go to System Preferences/Printers & Scanners/, and delete the printers listed by tapping on - (minus). Then, reenter the information when it's required later.

  • I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail is not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice

I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail are not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice. Yesterday, the signatures were stacking instead of switching to the one I wanted to choose.

I had this and fixed it.
I had upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures in Mail were fine. But then about a week later, I got a new computer and used Migration Assistant to copy my stuff to the new machine. Upon opening Mail, I had all the correct Signature information in the Preferences>Signatures window, but nothing worked.
After lots of hunting, I found the Signature Folder. It's in:
    Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
Looking at my previous setup (which works) I saw in that folder two types of files: .webarchive and .siganture
Looking in my new machine's Signature folder, I saw only the .webarchive folders, not the .signature folders
Since this was literally a clone of my previous setup to a new machine, here's what I did:
    1. Quit Mail
    2. In Problem machine, go to
    Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
    3. Move the Signatures folder someplace safe, but out of the MailData folder
    4. Get the Signatures Folder from the working install (like a backup) and copy it to the MailData folder on the problematic machine
    5. Start Mail on the problem machine
This worked for me. I don't know why Migration Assistant didn't copy the full signature folder, but this fixed it. It worked perfectly partly because I had just backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner and the very next day set up the new machine. I don't know where Lion or earlier versions of mail stored signatures, but the absence of the .signature filetype seems to be the problem.
    Hope this helps

  • How can I change the app that a .pdf attachment opens in on the fly w/o using Preference Pane?

I have the need to open some .pdf attachments in firefox (24) and some in Skim, pdf reader. I understand that the opening is set in the Preferences Pane. Is there a way or add on that will allow this on the fly ? Or place the option in the attachments dropdown menu on the attachments bar ? It would greatly speed things up.

You can select 'Always Ask' as action in preferences when opening a pdf attachment. So you'll be prompted every time and can choose which application to use.

  • How can I get sound on my MacBook Air after installation of Lion? "No output devices found" on the system preferences pane of my MacBook Air.

Since installing Lion on my MacBook Air, I get no sound and ITunes playback doesn't move. The Sound Preference pane states "No output devices found." The Bluetooth connection to a WiFi speaker works, so it must be a software problem. Anyone?

For sound, try the audio output port and connecting to the RCA  audio input ports on your Pioneer receiver.  Use something like this:

  • System Preference Panes non-functional (some)

I am "fixing" a friends MacBook Pro as a favour, and she's getting exactly what she paid for. It may be a few years old - not sure. It's running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, but I'm putting it in this more general section because it may not be SL-specific.
A few of the System Preferences panes don't work. A message comes up which simply says "non-functional" or something like that. Specifically, the ones whcih don't work are:
    Desktop and ScreenSaver
    Spotlight
    Energy Saver
Background: she forgot her password, and this is on a computer which was formerly someone else's. I couldn't even get the thing to the login screen, so something else was wrong besides her password, but I had her gray Snow Leopard installation disks, so got through the re-install process, made a new User for myself, as Administrator, and was then delighted to find that all of her data was still intact. I had to add myself in to the permissions on her UserID. I made a new user for her as well, because we still didn't have her own original password, and I looked around but couldn't find it. I copied all of her data over to her new UserID.
I also did all Updates, plus tried a 10.6.8. combo update.
Then I made an error. The former owners UserID was also still there. We couldn't log on as her either, without her password, but I figured that we didn't need that anymore, checked with the current owner first, and deleted the original User (and renamed the computer). I cannot reconstruct in my mind whether the System Preferences panes malfunction occurred before or after deleting the original User.
There is other minor wonkiness, but basically the machine is running and the data has been preserved (and now backed up). But one thing at a time: I've reinstalled the OS a couple of times, without improvement. I tried to upgrade to Mavericks, but after downloading, it told me that this computer could not be upgraded (without saying why not).
I haven't found any plist files which look relevant. I did more 2 of them out of HD-Library-Preferences, without any effect, so put them back. I find the Preference Panes in System-Library-PreferencePanes, but didn't see anything to do about that. The offending panes look like they're at least present.
Is there something simple I'm missing? Can I get those panes back?
    Thank you.
    Charles

Macbook pros need to be at least 2009 for 13" and 2007 for 15" and 17" to run Mavericks.  see system requiements.
At this point, the easiest solution will be to make your backups current, then wipe the drive and do a clean install of the system. That means more work reinstalling the backed-up data (you only want to restore data and third-party apps, not any of the system components), but it makes sure you get a clean, working copy of the system.

  • Dictation and Speech Preference Pane Broken in ML

So I got Mountain Lion installed (upgrade from SL), most everything seems to be working fine except for one odd quirk. I was excited to try out the new dictation feature, however when I try to open the preference pane I get:

I defintely have an intel mac, but it does not make sense why the Speech pane will not work on Intel, definitely something goofy going on.

I did check that already (it is unchecked, everything running in 64 bit) ... still no dice.
I did just try using it on another blank user account, and it works there. Would be nice to be able to use it without having to transfer everything to a new account!
