How to upgrade firefox in ubuntu 10.04

I would like to know why there is no update provisions under the "Help" drop down and how to update from 20.0 to a newer version. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and have no plans at all to change/update the OS, so please solve this.

Only the Official builds of Firefox from www.mozilla.org/firefox/all get internal updates from Mozilla.
Third-party builds that you built yourself or by a third-party such as a Linux distro provided package do not get updates from Mozilla as how can they provide updates for builds they did not well build.
You will either have to get update from Ubuntu If they still even provide package updates to this old 10.04 LTS from April 2011. Or you get Firefox from www.mozilla.org/firefox/all as you basically just untar the tarbal and run the firefox script for the basics.

  • How to upgrade Firefox on Fedora

    Hi,<br />
I'm currently running Fedora v.7 and have Firefox v.2. I'm trying to upgrade to the latest version of Firefox and having problems doing so. I tried the cmd: yum update firefox and got the results listed below:<br />
    <br />
    fedora 100% |=========================| 2.1 kB 00:00<br />
    updates 100% |=========================| 2.3 kB 00:00<br />
    Setting up Update Process<br />
Could not find update match for firefox<br />
No Packages marked for Update<br />
I then downloaded the latest version of Firefox from the website, but there is no .rpm file or .bz2 file which I can use to do the install. Could you please provide me with instructions on how I can do the upgrade?<br />
    Shahab

You should first off update to Fedora 18, http://fedoraproject.org/
Fedora 7 was End of Lifed 2008-06-13, which means it hasn't received updates since then. updating will not only keep you secure, but will also come with performance and stability improvements.

I'd also suggest running the tests with Xvfb / Xvnc and '''making sure that you have a vanilla Firefox (as opposed to Iceweasel that ships with debian,''' I am
not sure what Ubuntu ships). If you still get this error, let me know.

  • I can't upgrade Firefox 4.1 to 5 in Ubuntu 10.04.2 i386

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 i386. I am using the PPA "ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable". It worked to upgrade Firefox 3 to 4.0.1, but not 4.0.1 to 5.
On the list of Update Manager appears the packs: firefox, firefox-branding, firefox-gnome-suport, language-pack-en, language-pack-en-base, language-pack-pt, language-pack-pt-base, ubufox.
But the pack "firefox" can't be marked to upgrade.
Only is possible a parcial upgrade.

Have you asked on the Ubuntu forums? as Mozilla does not provide those updates and somebody may know what is happening better there.

Whenever your upgrading firefox browser, it updates only the browser it never remove your settings and bookmark. If you like the clean reinstall follow the below steps
Note: clean reinstall removes everything from your system
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • How come when I update Firefox in Ubuntu, the existing french language package is not functional while in Windows, it always works without problems?

When I upgrade Firefox (French, from 13.0 to 13.0.1) in Ubuntu, the existing french language pack does not work, while in Windows 7, it does work without problems. It seems to me that the language pack should be system independent.
This problem happens in Ubuntu everytime there is an upgrade, and it is usually very difficult to find the correct language file that wors in Ubuntu. Again, in Windows, no such problem.
    I am puzzled.

You always need to reinstall language packs if you update Firefox because the updater doesn't seem to be able to find them on its own.

  • Where are the instructions about how to upgrade to Firefox 5?

Where are the instructions about how to upgrade to Firefox 5?
I have FF v4 and want to upgrade to v5. But despite my searching, I cannot find any instructions on how to upgrade. Why do S/W developers for the most part fail to provide this essential information?
Specifically, does one do an in-place upgrade (install to existing v4 directory)? If so, are all the user's settings/ preferences/ configurations/ bookmarks/etc. preserved? Or does one install to a new directory? If that is the case, how does one then incorporate their former customizations into the new install? Also, what happens to add-ons, plug-ins, etc.
Install instructions, including upgrade instructions, should be readily available on the same page where the download link is!
Please advise. I'm anxious to upgrade, but without this basic information, I will not feel comfortable in doing so.

In Firefox 4 and later you can go to Help > About Firefox to check for updates and update.<br />
You can update Firefox in the same installation folder.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • How to have Firefox use same bookmark file when running on either Windows XP or Ubuntu (dual boot desktop)

Recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop in a dual-boot configuration with Windows XP. (Ubuntu is awesome !)
I can run Firefox on either OS - each version maintaining its own bookmark file.
Is there any way to have each version of Firefox look in the same place for the bookmark file ? That would remove the need to regularly export/import bookmarks between versions to keep them in sync.
    Thanks !
    Andrew Chorlton

    You can use Firefox Sync.
    See:

  • All of my previous security exceptions disappeared when I upgraded Firefox and I have NO list of what they were; how do I get them back?

I was pestered to death by Firefox to upgrade to 12.0. I am really sorry I did. I lost all my Security Exceptions. Tools > Options > Security > Exceptions All of my previous security exceptions disappeared when I upgraded Firefox. They are gone and I have NO list of what they were. Is there ant way to bring them back?

The security exceptions that allow other sites to install software?
Which version did you have before -- 3.6.x or Firefox 11?
I don't know whether you regularly back up your computer, but if you have a backup of your Firefox profile folder, then that data should be in there. If you can locate a backup copy of permissions.sqlite, you could use a utility to extract the list. (Or find a volunteer here to assist you with that.)
By the way, did your pop-up exceptions and image exceptions carry over? You can check those under Tools > Options > Content.
