How to upgrade from Panther (10.3.9) to Tiger (10.4.x)

I have a G3-600 with a CDRW drive. I've been able to upgrade it from 10.0.3 to 10.3.9 with a purchased set of 10.3 install cdroms. I'd like to make the jump to 10.4, since I've been told that my machine can handle it. However, the 10.4 upgrade distribution that I can purchase comes on DVD. Can someone recommend a way to do this successfully? Locally, I can purchase a USB external DVD-rom drive and try using it, or possibly try to read the upgrade DVD in and store an image onto an external Hard Drive, then attach the drive to the G3 machine and try to upgrade with it.
Any suggestions welcomed.
-Bob

You could look for a CD version of Tiger although they are probably next to impossible to find. You cannot use a USB drive because your computer cannot boot from a USB drive. You would need a Firewire drive. You could certainly image the DVD but to do so would require a DVD drive. If you have access to another Mac with a DVD drive, then you could install via Target Disk Mode.

  • Upgrading from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.3

My brother has a 17" 1.8 IMac and wants to upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4.3 so he can use Aperture, Apple's new software. Since I have always helped him in the past with his upadates, I prefer doing clean installs by reformatting the hard drive before doing a major upgrade like the aforementioned. Is this the preferred method or should I attempt to install over Panther without reformatting? I'm rather reluctant to go to 10.4.3 based upon the number of negative experiences reported by people who have done so, but if he wants to use Aperture, according to the system requirements needed to run it, he has to perform this update. What recommendations do any of you have for making a safe migration from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3? In other words, what is the best and safest method of updating?
    G5 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Tom,
Don't forget this forum is the hospital ward. Don't let the preponderance of bad reports make you think an update is bad. These are usually cases where people haven't taken the proper precautions while updating which should always be taken.
Mac OS X doesn't technically have a clean install option. For reasons why I say not, see this user tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
The best method of upgrading depends on how well the machine is functioning in 10.3.9. If it has sufficient space, sufficient RAM, has not had any kernel panics, the following sequence of steps is recommended:
    1. Backup your data.
    2. Make sure all your hardware and software has compatible drivers for the operating system you are going to. Verify all the applications you are going to use are updated.
    3. Dismount and disconnect all third party peripherals.
    4. Upgrade and install to 10.4 with a retail 10.4 installer disk. Do not use a system specific disk on a different machine. Buy the box family or single user pack from an Apple software reseller.
    5. Repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
    6. Run the 10.4.3 combo update:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1043combo.html
    7. repeat step 5.
Do steps 1 and 5 before and after any update as a general practice in anycase. Application installers often have a tendency to want to mess with permissions and sometimes don't put them back causing problems later on.
Now if you are having issues launching specific programs, or programs unexpectedly quitting now, or 4 language screens those need to be isolated before you update.

  • Can not upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4

I have a PMG4 AGP 1.4 ghz (upgrade from OWC) 2 GB ram and three SCSI hard drives 147/147/40 (upgrades from OWC).
I upgraded to Tiger 10.4 from Panther about six months ago. And the upgrade never worked. After the upgrade for Tiger, the screen would look gray with the Apple logo and the spinning icon, then it would remain gray but the Apple logo will change to a circle with a diagonal line across it and it will stay that way forever.
So I been stuck with Panther ever since. (My iMac-G4 Video Special Edition did take the upgrade very well). I called OWC and they said that their drives were tested for Tiger and didn‘t have any problems. (how about the processor upgrade?)
I also took the computer to Apple store for advise, and one of their techs told me that the hard drive could be the problem.
So last night I decided to try it again but on the other drive (the one I‘m using as a starup disk with panther 10.3.9). Same thing.
By doing the same thing it tells me that the hard drives are the problem.
Please help because I really don‘t know what to do of this.
    Thanks,
    Oscar

You might try removing third party hard ware. Specifically, the SCSI drives. Get the systme back to original configuration with only keyboard and mouse and give it a go.

  • Problems upgrading from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger

I am having problems upgrading my Mac 500mhtz which currently runs Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther). It starts the installation process, I choose the language that I want (EnglisH) then the next screebbn says " Alert - Thius software cannot be installed on this computer" . The options I have is Resart or Startup Disk . I don't understand whythis happening becasue I meet the requirements. I have about 6 gigs of space ti stall and from what I read Tiger needs 3 gigs. I have loked through many forums and have not found the answer to my question. Does anybody know the answer to this solution. I have also backed up my User profile and are planning on doing a clean install once when installing Tiger.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That error frequently appears if you don't use the retail Tiger installer discs. Mac OS X installer discs are system specific or retail versions. You don't want to install another Mac's installer discs, for reasons my FAQ states here:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#SYSTEMSPECIFIC
I'd also look that whole FAQ over and see whether or not you really are ready for an upgrade.
In addition, there is no such thing as a "clean install". Here are the various types of installation options available:

  • Upgrading from Panther 10.3.8 to Tiger

Is this as straightforward as buying the upgrade?
Can i just load this over the top, currently having to run Leonardo ISDN software, does this have any issues with Tiger?
    Thanks

    Hi Keelie and welcome!
As regards Leonardo, you will have to ask the vendors if it is Tiger compatible or if you need a new version.
As regards updating to Tiger, the following may assist you:
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

  • How to upgrade from 10.1.5 to 10.2?

Can anyone out there let me know how to upgrade from 10.1.5 to 10.2? I'm trying to use my new digital camera and I need a minimum of 10.2.
Please email me with the answer.
    Thanks!

Hi, Jen. An OS upgrade to any version higher than 10.1.5 will have to be purchased. After buying OS 10.2.x (Jaguar), 10.3.x (Panther), or 10.4.x (Tiger), you will then be able to apply free downloadable updaters to get you to 10.2.8, 10.3.9, or the current 10.4.5 — whatever is the end-stage evolution of the cat you bought.
For universal installers of Jaguar and Panther, which Apple no longer sells, try http://www.hardcoremac.com or http://www.apple-rescue.com. Tiger is available everywhere.

  • Does anyone know how to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.3 ios?

After being tricked by the fast talking smoothy helper at Apple store in London to buy a micky mouse ipodtouch (fourth generation) two years ago I am stuck at ios 4.1 and find that all the useful applications need 4.3 or more. So I went to the trouble of letting the macbook stay open all night to load yet another micky mouse version of itunes so that I can upload the more recent version of ios and now (since I don't want to continually have a lot of rubbish on the ipod I disabled the automatic sync "feature") I can only go round in circles  whereby the only real possibility left is to turn on the autosync feature. I have had messages like "your ipod will be completely erased if you proceed" and "do you wish to fiddle another few days with this nasty system, then click on continue" and so on.
Does anyone know how to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.3 ios?
That would be great (maybe) because otherwise I will toss this children's waste product on the floor and set up my HD camera to show how easy it is to smash the brightly lit screen into pieces and relieve myself of trash which Apple sell to unsuspecting gullible humans who believe that they are not being tricked by such a nice company who produce shiny colourful gadgets which only work for a month or two before becoming 100% obsolete.
Great to hear from those who have wasted many months of their lives and discovered how to trick the system into doing a simple update operation!
I am insulted by the tricks that fool many and that apple pretend are "necessary".

Illaass, your help is amazing - miles better than anyone working in this part of the world who is paid - and you do this for free - because, like me, you LOVE to help people!
BUT, as I said above -
    1. There is nothing "mobile" under Application Support. For whatever reason.
    2. Devious - that Apple has set up iPod to not show in Finder - a red herring and sign that corruption is visible.
I will try iFunBox next and it sounds like they provide this for the more serious users but use a trivial name to excuse further strangeness.
    After

    I get

Please do not interrupt the update, which may take an hour or longer to complete.

And then I wait for hours to arrive at the above mentioned

    and then as above
An error occurred while backing up this iPod (0xE8000084). Would you like to continue to update this iPod?
Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPod.
    Cancel                Continue
and so we are back to where we always land - the user is left in the Apple designed sabotage situation which annoyed me so much initially.
"Most users will give up at this point, loose all the data or buy yet another disposable from Apple. Less than 3% will work their way to this site and 90% of the 3% will leave the iPod to gather dust in the hope that someone will help later. In all, Apple gains, since people blame themselves for "mistakes" which Apple programmed to throw out users who do not take the 100% Apple path. But Illaass and myself still play the game of "trying to fix" something which Apple don't allow."  was the comment which I was going to write but decided against it, adding no value to the conversation other than explaining one reality which we all hoped could be wrong but which I thought to have a very high chance of being closer to the truth.
Apologies for my doubts towards the integrity of the creators.

Recheck: Under Application Support "mobilesync" folder has appeared (MobileMeSyncClient has also appeared [while again trying to update iPod] with zero size) - Good news, a Backup file is there, but it is only 3GB while my iPod has 32GB and is close to full (800MB free space).

The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9).
    More Infomation    OK
So it looks like I may have lost all the important pictures documenting various items all around Europe for the last two years - luckily I moved a year ago from the iPod toy camera to a Panasonic real camera with SD card which can be read on any computer. Hence important items lost may only be older than one year rather than the most recent items.
Glad I have changed to Panasonic since they don't try to screw you when you don't use their system.
I will now check the "more information" rather than just click on "OK" since I am of the 3% who "don't accept cr*p".
For full information I quote that the iPod now shows a screen with a USB ikon, an upward arrow and an iTunes ikon (all micky mouse language which reduces transparant, clear and technical discussion and thus covers the trail of "where things went wrong").
The iPod is still attached to the computer but the above MMTALK may mean that the iPod should be attached via USB to the mac. I record much of this activity on Video to be able to later prove EXACTLY what occurred, rather than having to rely on screenshots and opinions. We are after all dealing with important items which may later be required to be shown in court, as evidence against fraudsters.
The "More Information" link leads to
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
which I have already seen before.
I clicked on OK and a help screen (unnamed as ever because no one like myself demanded that the help screens be named for later discussion) arrived:
You can help Apple improve its products a
while copying this into this message the computer began to start up Final Cut Pro and this was cancelled, then iTunes came up with a message:
iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.
    ok
And I presume the earlier message about helping Apple is gone because I keep getting interrupted by this message called
iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.
    ok
it has appeared now at least six times interferring with anything else I do. Each time I try to write, this message appears and blocks, but only when I write. I tried to do a carriage return and the message appeared taking the carriage return as acceptance of the OK in the
iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.
    ok
Message. But since I have not removed the USB and keep returning to this message I am able to write for a few seconds (now 30 seconds or more) and the message remains on the screen but not blocking this conversation. It appears to be random but in fact as you can later see from the video, it is not reappearing each periodic number of seconds but as I reach a new comment.
I will try to close iTunes so that this can be stopped (I clicked on OK and it appeared another few times, each time I clicked on ok and now it has left me in peace to write here although iTunes is still not yet closed).
Difficult to log down all the strange behaviour but I think you can get the gist of what is going on.
    2014 01 12 12 49 27
Should I remove the iPod and stop iTunes? I have a nasty feeling turning to indifference since I have video footage which will verify all the above in a court of law if later required. The truth must always win over any devious attempts at forcing people to do things they don't want to ;-)

  • Need information on how to upgrade from 10.5.8 to make computer compatable to iphone upgrade of 11.5.1

hi everyone:  I require some information on how to upgrade from 10.5.8 to make my mackbook pro compatable
with the iphone upgrade. Please note that I have gone thru the upgrades on this computer and it tells me there are
no new ones available...... I need to get my upgrade past the 11.5.1 level.....so do I need to purchase a new
upgrade program....and if so which one...as I have been thru the apple store and so far as i can tell
the ones that are listed such as maverik, lion and snow lepard are not high enough.
To anyone who replies, thankyou so much for taking the time to help me.  It is truely appreciated.

11.1.5 is likely to be the version of iTunes you are being asked to run, not the version of Mac OS X.
To get a higher version of iTunes, you likely have to upgrade Mac OS X. All Roads lead through the 10.6 Upgrade, available as a physical DVD only, from the Apple Online store for about US$20:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
This is one of the most benign Upgrades Apple has ever issued. The size of the Operating System gets smaller, performance is slightly faster, and very few Applications are left behind. If you have some older PowerPC Applications, you may need to ask to install the Optional Rosetta emulator for PowerPC code when you install.
Once your 10.6 install is fully Updated to 10.6.8 using Software Update, the Mac App Store will appear, and future upgrades (if needed) will be handled through variations of online purchases.

How to upgrade from os x 10.6.8 to Lion os 10.7.2?

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.
Unless you previously got an installer for Mac OS X 10.7 through 10.7.2, you can only upgrade to a newer version.

You do not need Netweaver 7.2 CE for using NWBC 3.0. You just need netweaver 7.02.
