How to Upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5

I had been using CS 2 since 2005 and though it is still a very good application I have been frustrated by the need to frequently renew the activation. So removed it from my system early this year ( 20100 and used another application. However having tried CS5 on a friends PC I was  impressed and decided to purchase the upgrade from CS2 to CS5. I would like to kow if I have to reinstall CS2 or can clean install CS5 which I would prefer.?

Thanks for the help your answer was the best.
As a follow up I would like to ask how to avoid having to frequently reactivate CS5 which was my big problem in CS2/ My system is mission critical it has four bootable system disks and one non-bootable common disk (for temp, Internet cache and installation files. Using a "CasperSDB3" I backs up the active drive every night to an identical drive, which as just previously backed up to an external SATA drive. So in this way I have a highly secure grandfather son grandson set of bootable drives. The trouble with APS CS2 was that after having to recover about four times in five years the CS2 application when loaded would say that the serial number was not recognized and I had to have a lengthy phone call to Adobe support.
Is there a way to avoid this in CS 5?

  • Cannot direct upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5 Extended

Despite the information in various spots on Adobe's website, it appears that it's not possible to simply upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5 Extended. After entering the CS5 serial number, the installer asks for the serial number of a "qualifying product". This includes a dropdown list that only has
    Photoshop CS5
    Photoshop CS4 Extended
    Photoshop CS3 Extended
    Here's the view:
Entering the CS2 serial number == fail.
A call to Adobe support get past this issue, basically reading out a challenge/response from the installer to the guy on the phone. But this seems remarkably stupid to me. Was it really more effective to force me (and anyone else following this upgrade path) to call tech support just to install the software I just past $350 for? And if this was the plan, why not SAY SO ON THE ADOBE WEBSITE?!?
Has anyone else run into this issue? If so, was calling tech support the only way out?

You are correct in wishing Adobe made it clear that you do need to go through Customer Service to accomplish this.
Most users make the purchase through Adobe and straighten this out before installing.

  • Can I upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5 after installing Lion?

Can I upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5 after installing Lion?   Or should I have done it before installing Lion?

I think you are missing my point.
For the last many editions of the creative suite they have each been completely independent. There is no "going over a previous version. Each version stands on its own and is a clean install — as long as you haven't installed that specific version before.
And "obsolete" is a pretty relative term. With products as complex as the creative suite there are often features (or even whole applications) that change between versions. Many people I know keep earlier versions around, just for that very reason.

  • Problem upgrading from Photoshop CS2 to CS4 Extended

I purchased the retail box Photoshop CS4 Extended Upgrade (Windows) from a retail store ($349.99 + tax). I am upgrading from Photoshop CS2 and this is the version that the Adobe website says to purchase for this upgrade path. The problem is that CS4 doesn't see my installed, working, activated, and registered CS2 installation so it brings up the next screen offering to allow me to install it as a trial version OR list my qualifying product and serial number. The way that it offers to let me enter my qualifying product is via a drop down box with a single entry of CS3 Extended. No way of entering my CS2 there and it doesn't like my CS2 serial number entered with a CS3 product being shown there (says it isn't a valid CS3 serial number...of course it isn't). Does anyone know how to get this thing to install? Adobe tech support is gone until Monday and then I'll be at work, unable to try anything they might suggest.
Why does Adobe make upgrades so painful? I remember CS2 was a PITA and took Adobe tech support a week to figure out how to get it to install.

No, this shouldn't be extended to extended (I wouldn't expect to shell out $350 twice for extended). This is Adobe P/N 65015396 which their website says is for PhotoShop CS, CS2, CS3, and CS3 upgrades and retails for $350. The face of the box is identified as Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended Windows and the side of the box only says that I must have an "eligible older version of Adobe or Macromedia software." It also says to check the website, which says this P/N is what to buy for my upgrade path. A mess? YES!!!

  • Upgrading from photoshop CS to CS5

Is this possible?, Or do I have to pay the full upgrade cost?  or possibly upgrade to CS4 first the CS5 this would save about £280.00 over the full upgrade.
    Best regards

From what I've read, if you upgrade to CS4 from CS, you've used your upgrade option for your license and you WILL have to pay the full price for CS5 as a new licensing will be required.
There is absolutely no truth in that statement.  If you upgrade from CS to CS4 now, you will then be able to update from CS4 to CS5, and from CS5 to CS6, from CS6 to CS7 and so on and on.  You might even get a free upgrade to CS5 if you buy CS4 now, not 100% sure of that.
The trick is to do so right now, before CS4 ceases to be sold in about a few weeks.
I haven't bought a full version of Photoshop since Photoshop 6, then upgraded to 7, 8 (CS), 9 (CS2), 10 (CS3) and finally 11 (CS4).  I'm still eligible to upgrade to CS5, except that I won't be doing so for financial reasons, as it would require a hardware upgrade for me too.

  • I can't figure out how to upgrade from Photoshop CS4 to CS6.

Apparently CS4 refuses to read Canon 6D RAW files so I need to upgrade.
I am using a Mac running OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks.
How do I go about upgrading from CS4 to CS6?? I can't seem to find a link that allows me to do this.
    Thanks!

you can upgrade from cs5 to cs6, but not from cs4 to cs6.
you can join cc to access ps cs6 and ps cc:  http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/buying-guide.html

  • Upgrading from Photoshop CS2 to CS4

Due to having PowerPC machines we're unable to use Photoshop CS5 so we want to upgrade as far as we can, which is CS4. The Adobe store doesn't seem to sell CS4 any more, so we're looking at buying through a third-party vendor. Vendors sell both CS4 Full Versions and Upgrades; would we be able to use an Upgrade version with a CS2 serial number? Thanks!

An upgrade should work for you, because you are less than three versions behind CS4, which is Adobe's usual limitation rule.
Just be sure you get it from an authorized reseller - there is a lot of fake and damaging software out there...

  • Upgrading from Photoshop CS

I need to upgrade my Photoshop, my current version is plain CS. My options in the upgrade menu are Photoshop CS2 and above, or Photoshop Elements 8 and below.
I'm not sure what to choose? Or does it matter? I'd hate to pick the wrong one and buy an upgrade I can't use or something. Any suggestions would be appreciated

It was smart of you to ask, though it's unfortunate that there are no longer discounted upgrades available to users of Photoshop CS and earlier.
Now, you might be thinking you'll want to find some new old stock CS4 package to try to get upgrade pricing, and that may actually be possible, but something to keep in mind is this:
There's a policy change in the works:  While you can upgrade from Photoshop CS2 and newer to Photoshop CS5.1 today, when they release Photoshop CS6 (presumably in the coming year) you will only be allowed a discounted upgrade from Photoshop CS5 and newer.

  • How can I upgrade from Photoshop CS4 to Cs 5 or 6 without buying the creative cloud?

How can I upgrade from Photoshop CS4 to Cs 5 or 6 without buying the creative cloud?

    Well CS5's ship has sailed.
CS6 can still be purchased on Perpetual License but it's not going to have all the bells & whistles that the current versions have.  Just as long as you understand what you're getting.

  • Hello - I upgraded from photoshop cc to cc 2014 and lost my plug ins.  How can I move them into cc 2014? Thanks

Hello - I upgraded from photoshop cc to cc 2014 and lost my plug ins.  How can I move them into cc 2014? Thanks

The install of 2014 doesn't move or copy anything from a previous version, with the exception of settings. You can go into your Photoshop CC installation folder, navigate to your plugins folder and then just copy all the plugins you've installed from that folder and into the Photoshop CC 2014 plugins folder. The plugins should then be available in 2014 the next time you launch Photoshop.
The only thing that may prevent this from working is if you're using the 32bit version of Photoshop CC. Photoshop CC 2014 is 64bit only so 32bit plugins don't work. If this is the case for you, check out the manufacturer of the plugins and see if they have 64bit versions available.

  • I want to upgrade from Photoshop Extended CS5 to PS Extended CS6 (I do NOT want CC) but have been unable to find this at a sensible price (or sometimes at all). Help, anyone please?

I want to upgrade from Photoshop Extended CS5 to PS Extended CS6 Mac (I do NOT want CC) but have been unable to find this at a sensible price (or sometimes at all). Help, anyone please? This is in UK, btw!

What do you consider a sensible price?  PS CS6 extended is available only when you purchase the CS6 Suite, which is around $1000 for the upgrade from CS5.  PS 6, which is not extended, is about $200, but I'm not sure about upgrading to a single app from a suite.  Adobe used to allow it, but I'm not sure about now.  PS CC and Lightroom 5 combo is $9.99 a month or PS CC alone for $19.99 or the whole CC suite for $29 a month.  The latest CC apps are "extended."

I would advise you to buy the bundle package of Premiere and Photoshop Elements 13 which cost 149 $ but due to online promotions the price right now is 119 $.

How do I upgrade from Photoshop Elements 11 to PSE 12 (student edition)

I believe you just need to purchase the upgrade.  I don't think there is any additional discount with upgrade pricing, meaning you don't also get a student version discount with an already discounted upgrade purchase.  As far as versions go, there is no difference between a regular and a student version... the difference is in the licensing.
