How to upgrade hard drive without resinstalling Mac OS X
Hello everyone. I have a MacBook Pro 17'' with the original 160GB HD but now I want to upgrade my hard drive to a Seagate 500GB. My question is, how can I upgrade the HD without reinstalling and setting up all my stuff again?
Can this be done with TimeMachine and a Time Capsule? Any other option?
Thanks in advance.
David
yes, this can be done with Time machine. you'll need an external drive (could be a Time capsule or a directly attached drive). make backup of your current system. then replace the hard drive. then boot from the leopard install DVD and use the system restore utility in the utilities menu at the top to restore your old system from the backup onto the new hard drive. note that the new drive should be properly formatted: Mac os extended journaled format with GUID partition scheme. you'll most have to reformat the drive using disk utility first before using the restore utility.
another option is to put your old hard drive into an external hard drive enclosure (USB or firewire), install the new hard drive in the MB, then boot from the external drive and clone it to the new internal. you can use CCCloner or Superduper for cloning. again, reformat the new internal first. or you can clone your internal to an external (if you have a regular external drive but don't have an enclosure), then replace the internal drive, boot from the external and clone it back to the internal.

How to merge hard drives without using Disk Utility?
Hi,
Disk Utility has no visible 'Partition' tab when I click on a hard drive, so I am wondering if there is a way to merge my hard drives without using it?
A possible reason for the Partition tab not being visible is that my MacBook was set up by adminstrators at my school, and perhaps they have locked the hard drive so I cannot merge them.
Is there any way to get around that?
Thanks!Yes, you cannot Partition a Partition, even if it's just one Partition, you must Partition the whole disk, which may erase all your data... I forget which version of OSX it changed to allow resizing Partitions.

How to Upgrade Hard Drive in MacBook Pro?
I made the mistake of getting only the 90G HD is a MBP purchased in Feb 2008. The manual does not have info on upgrading the HD and I suspect doing so myself may void the Apple Care warranty.
Will the Apple Store do this upgrade for me and in a manner that would not void the warranty?
Thanks,
MarcantonioTHe MacBook Pro you are speaking of has a hard drive that is not user replaceable. Meaning, it would void the AppleCare. With that said, any Apple Certified Support Center can service your MacBook Pro without voiding the warranty, this includes retail Apple Stores.

I am running Solaris 8 using a 4gb IDE hard drive. I am running out of space on my root partition. I would like to upgrade the hard drive to a 8gb SCSI drive. Is there any way to do this without reinstalling the OS. Or if not is there anyway to run a system backup to file on an NFS volume and then restore this after a reinstall. I am a solaris newbe but do have extensive hardware/software experience with windows and some experience with linux.
We can copy a file system from one hard disk to multiple hard disks through NFS file system and dd command. If you want copy the entire packages or applications or databases to the network hard disks drives please follow these steps:
Step 1
Share a fil system and edit the /etc/dfs/dfstab file in a Solaris server.
The commands in the /etc/dfs/dfstab file are run when
1. The system enters run level 3
2. The shareall command is run by the root user
3. The /etc/init.d/nfs.server script is run by the root user with the start option.
Example:
share -F nfs /apps
Step 2
Start the NFS service and NFS daemons using this script.
# /etc/init/nfs.server start
Step 3
Use the dfshares command to verify that the resource is available.
# dfshares
Example:
# dfshares
RESOURCE SERVER ACCESS TRANSPORT
server1:/apps server1 -
Step 4
In Client side, mount the nfs file system.
# mount -F nfs server1:/apps /mnt
Step 5
Copy the entire content to client hard disk using dd command
Example:
# dd if=/mnt of=/dev/dsk/c0d0t0s5 or # dd if=/mnt of=/apps
Step 6
Edit vfstab file for this entry.
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s5 /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s5 /apps ufs 2 yes -
Hope it helps.

Can I upgrade hard drive on 2007 mac book
I have a white mac book from 2007. Is it possible to upgrade the hard drive to increase storage for my thousands of photos?
Yes, but not easy. Visit OWC for replacement drives and video tutorials for disassembly and toolkits.

I've been through the commuity and on-line retailer pages and I'm confused by the variety of answers here. I know the max thickness must be 2.5." But some say 5400 RPM; others say 7200. Some say 1TB but show only 750GB.
Is iTB safe in this box? Overheating issues?
I've seen a Seagate Momentus 1TB from one retailer but can't find any trace of it at others or on the Seagate site.Hello,
The most important thing is that it be Serial ATA (1.5 Gb/s) compatible, there is no practical limit other than manufactured size in that form & speed.

The 750 GB WD I checked was SATA 3 Gb/s. -
How to upgrade hard drive on a compaq f700
I have a compaq presario f700 with a 80gig hd and i am try ing to upgrade to a 250 hd. I have tried several method, copying, cloning the drive, and reinstalling vista on new drive, but none work. is there a size limit for this system, has any one had sucess doing this?
mxdxpx wrote:
This is a compaq f700 what do you know about them?
Not much but because the original hdd was an 80GB one the lappy is a bit old (I had a lappy with a 40GB as a PATA hdd). If the 250GB fits in it means a SATA hdd but only 80GB so most likely the first SATA connection. SATA II drives have more capacity than 80GB (250GB for example). HP laptops are designed for the current standard components (BIOS settings). It means that you can't simply use a component incompatible (manufactured later in old laptops) with the BIOS settings (whitelist). These are listed in the service manuals. Have a look in the manual for a compatible drive and get one. This is the best solution you can get because the hdd has been tested in a laptop from that series..

Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says

Does any one know how I can fix this without a recovery disc? ThanksI just want to add to this, in case someone else searches for this error on Apple Support (google doesnt cover apple support.. how clever is that?)
I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
It was Ram for me.. -
I am trying to upgrad the hard drive in my mac book pro using the disk utility in an attempt to clone my old hard drive. I can only get so far throughj the process where its about to start cloing when I get a message " error 254". Any idea what that means and how do I get around this issue so I can use my new hard drive? Thanks for your input.
VinceConnect the HDD to your MBP. Open Disk Utility>Erase and drag the HDD icon inrt the Name field. The format should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click on the Erase button.
Then try the clone process again. You may use Disk Utility>Restore or a third party cloning application such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.

How do I partition my external hard drive without losing data?
How do I partition my external hard drive without losing the data already on it? I've been using it with Time Machine on my old computer, but want to use it as a regular drag-and-drop type back up on my new computer. Is there any way to basically split the hard drive so I can still access the Time Machine backups on my old computer, but also be able to use it with my new mac? Thanks!
If you reformat the drive all data is lost.
The only way to save the data is to copy it somewhere else during the reformat.
Drag & drop will not backup things correctly.
I suggest you set up partition for each Mac and then point Time Machine to each of the partition for each of the Macs. -
working in adobe illustrator - computer crashed - will not soft boot or reset PRAM - should i reinstall from CD snow leopard 10.6.3? I have an extra hard drive in my MAC with time machine on it set to do auto back ups. How do i recover ?
Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.
Your post is very vague on what occured, and there are many types of "crashes" it really depends upon what see on the screen and what the hardware does, we can't see it to tell you, so you have to tell us.
I suggest you run through these user tips and provide more information about your hardware.

If this is going way over your head, there are local PC/Mac techs that will assist you for a fee, Apple only does hardware repairs and is advised to use them if you discover it is, especially if under warranty/AppleCare.
Hard drive and RAM upgrades can be handled yourself or by a outside tech in many older models of Mac, but don't expect Apple to cover the new parts.

How to install a new hard drive without bootable disc/usb
Hi- my hard drive has totally failed and although I can get into disk utility it won't let me create images and keeps coming up with input/output errors when I try.
I don't have another mac to work from and have no discs whatsoever even for older OS versions
I've ordered a new hard drive(a seagate 750GB 7400rpm one) but how do I get mountain lion on the new hard drive without any discs? If I just put in my new hard drive will it come up with an option? I have a mid 2009 MBP if that helpsI have a mid 2009 MBP if that helps
Here is how it helps:
You need the Utilities from Recovery_HD. Your broken Mac can boot from a Thumb drive.
Use this article to download this Utility to copy the Recovery_HD from your older, working Mac to a minimum 1GB USB thumb drive:
OS X: About Recovery Disk Assistant
Then boot the new mac with the thumb drive by holding down Alt/Option, wait wait wait while it draws an Icon for each bootable Volume, choose the Recovery_HD, choose proceed arrow, and use Disk Utility to erase the drive and create GUID partition Map, 1 partition, Mac OS X Extended (journaled). Then install Mac OS X by download. -
I'm about to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one and will need to reinstall my CS6 Web/Design Suite... I've seen many people having issues with activation and licensing after they reformat their computers or buy a new one and try to install the programs on the new "system". How should I go about preparing my Adobe software on the current hard drive so I won't have any issues resintalling on the new hard drive? I will be installing CS6 Student/Teacher version on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit...
Thanks for the help!Thanks!
I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)
