How to upgrade ios 5.0.1 on ipad 2

Hello,
I have not upgraded ios on my iPad 2 since months.I am still using IOS 5.0.1 but most of apps need an upgraded version. Could I directly download and install the 7.1.2 version?

when you connect your phone with your computer and use itunes you can click on the phone
and click on an update button
about facebook games then think they are all flash based and iphones cant do flash so thats not possible

Not sure whether you want to upgrade to iOS 5 or you have iOS 5 and want to upgrade from it, but you can only update to the highest iOS 6 version that a device supports, which for an iPad 2 is 6.1.3. If you already have iOS 5+ then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update option on it for direct update update on it, otherwise you can only update via your computer's iTunes.
To update via your computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes and selecting 'Backup' (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC)
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

Iif the above doesn't work, force iPad into Recovery Mode.
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.

6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.

How to upgrade iOS on iPhone when disk iTunes is installed on is virtually full

I'm trying to upgrade iOS on my iPhone. The PC that I run iTunes on is old and as such the C: has only a 40GB capacity and us virtually full. I have a symlink set up which points the default iTunes backup folder at a secondary, larger internal hard drive and I can back up my iPhone without any issue and not rake up space on C: (thanks to the symlink). However, when I try to upgrade from iOS 4.3 to the latest, iTunes complains that I have no free space and the I should free up 5GB which I can't do! I've got 1TB of available space on my network but iTunes only looks at the local disk when upgradin, giving me a scary "you'll lose all you data" type message when I try to progress. What are my options here? Uninstall iTunes and reinstall it somewhere with more space? Back up my iPhone, let iTunes wipe my data then restore from backup? Get Apple to fix iTunes? Sell everything and go and live in a commune with no electricity? Anyone got any idea? Thx

OK, I took your advice and tried to delete some of the 'crap', uninstalled a bunch of things, got Windows to 'Compress old files' and woohoo I now have 8.3GB free.
Tried the upgrade again and there's no diskspace warning, however, iTunes throws a 1303 error when trying to backup and gives a 'Continue and you'll lose everything' message.
I can backup without a problem using the Backup Now button in iTunes, but when it tries to do it as part of the upgrade it fails.
So I'm back to square 1 really after hours of harddrive 'optimisation'. Any idea how I celar the 1303?

Let me give brief description about my problem -
My iPod Touch details

Generation                - 2nd generation
Current iOS Version - 2.2.1(5H11)
Model                       - MA627LL
Year of Purchase      - 2008-09
Problem / Issue
Initially when i brought this ipod touch , i was happily enjoying the fun from "itune-store" like downloading various apps/games/music so on...
But now i'm NOT able to download anything from itune-store to my ipod, and it throws an error while sync'ing like my iPod touch was NOT compatible with current iOS version.
So i think need you upgrade iOS newer version.

3) Do i need to purchase , or can i get it for FREE as it says in the APPLE site ?
Ways that i tried already -
I tried like connecting to itune-store , and by clicking on "check updates" - it shows as my iPod tocuh was update-to-date.
So how do i upgrade to new version now?
Any help please?

Googling shows that a MA627LL iPod is a 1G iPod that can only go to 3.1.3 using this link:

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

Edited: Please be aware that several recent releases of the 4500 code ignores the startup config and goes to ROMMON once you have upgraded, fix this by sorting the configreg.
