How to upgrade my Mac OSX 10.5.8 software

I've an ageing iMac version OSX 10.5.8
How can I upgrade the software and is it worth it? Am I better off just buying a new iMac?
Thanks all.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
             Model Identifier 5,1 or later
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The DVD should look like this
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

You need to purchase the 10.6 Operating Disks, as 10.6 is not downloadable.  You can purchase these disks from the on-line apple store - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard.
Also, make sure that your computer can in fact be upgraded to the newer OS version.  Check your computers model and year - - https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the Mac osx 10.5.11 dual 2.7 Speaking to the issues Such as Mac OS X 10.6

Is it possible to upgrade the Mac osx 10.5.11
    dual 2.7
    Speaking to the issues
Such as Mac OS X 10.6

There isn't a OSX 10.5.11.  It looks like you are asking about how to upgrade from OSX 10.4.11 (as suggested in your profile) to 10.6 (or was this another typographical error and you meant 10.5?) on something with a dual 2.7 processor.  If you are talking about a G5 or any G series Mac then you cannot upgrade further than OSX 10.5 Leopard (the forum in which you posted this question).  Only Intel Macs can run 10.6 and greater.
It would help to know exactly which computer you are using, which exact operating system version it is using, and which one to which you wish to upgrade.

  • How do I reinstall mac OSX 10.6.4?

how do I reinstall mac OSX 10.6.4?

    Reinstall 10.6.4? exactly?
Only if you have 10.6.4 on machine specific disks that came with your computer (or you can call Apple for the disks)
However if you Software Update, Apple will bring your machine up to 10.6.8 automatically, with all the security and bug fixes. No choice to stop at 10.6.4 exactly.
10.6 is the Snow Leoaprd operating system, 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 or 10.6.8 is the updates to 10.6 that also occur when you run Software Update under the Apple menu.
So if your machine originally came with 10.5.x something and you upgraded via the 10.6.3 white retail disk, if you Software Update, you can't get to 10.6.4, it will just bring you to 10.6.8.
So if you want to reinstall 10.6.4 specifically, it would have to be the machine specific disks if your Mac orignally came with 10.6.4, else you will be force upgraded to 10.6.8 from any 10.6 version.
Now there are two ways to resinstall OS X, one way is to write say 10.6.8 over with 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 via the disks, and only 10.6 is overwritten, not your third party programs (most) and not your files. However you will need to Software Update, because your Apple related support files have been changed.
See #8 Reinstall Just OS X for that then Software Update to 10.6.8
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to wipe the entire drive or boot partition, then install 10.6 from the disk, then you don't have too Software update to 10.6.8 to get all the bug/security fixes if you don't want too.
I don't know what you want exactly, but I'll give you the links.

This is both methods explained, but I haven't seen it in awhile.

Your Mac is definitely one of the supported models? http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/specs/
If so, what happens when you try to download? Is it a case of nothing happens? If so, take a look at the suggestions under 'Stalled Download' in this link:
    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/#slideid-23477 1
Also, some usrs have found that logging out of the Mac App Store and then back in again and starting over has kick-started the download. It seems that the 5+gb download can take a long time to give any feedback as to what's happening.

  • HT3606 please help me to upgrade my mac osx 10.5.8 to mountain lion

please help me to upgrade my mac osx 10.5.8 to mountain lion. i am not able to do it.becoz i am not having app store.

Before you buy anything, first make sure your Mac is compatible.
Minimum specs for Snow Leopard.  Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard -                 Read the Technical Specifications
Note.  You can no longer buy Snow Leopard from an Apple retail store, only as follows.
If you are in North America ... Last I read, you must call them (1-800-MY-APPLE). It is $29 plus tax for family pack and $19 plus tax for the individual use version.
In Europe or otherwise … call your National Apple Helpline … http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Once you have bought and upgraded you will need to apply the Combo updater for Snow Leopard.          Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
For Mountain Lion the minimum specs are … technical specifications.
But if your computer meets those specs you can upgrade to Mountain Lion without any intermediate steps.

Not sure which driver you mean when you say "the driver in the Mac's list". Apple does not provide a driver for this device, so if you mean one of the default printers that are included with 10.6, like the Generic Postscript or Generic PCL, then these will only work if the optional PS or PCL print kits were installed in the machine. Given your inability to print then it would seem that you have neither kit installed. So this would require you to install the Canon UFR2 driver, which you can obtain via this link.
With the UFR2 driver installed, you add the printer using IP > LPD. Enter the IP address of the iRC2380, leave the Queue name blank and change the Name to iRC2380. Leave the Location field blank and in the Print Using menu, browse to the "Canon iR C2380/2550 UFR II (UK)". Click OK and then Add to complete the queue creation. You should now be able to print. Please reply if it does not work.

If you have the old hard drive, buy an enclosure, boot your computer off the old hard drive, make a clone of your old hard drive and then copy the clone to the SDD. That will also give you the old hard drive for additional storeage. Other World Computing sells enclosures.

    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
