How to Upgrade Qosmio F50 with SSD-drive

I want to upgrade my Toshiba F-50 with an SSD-Drive 80 GB (Intel).
Can anyone recommend an SSD drive, I would like to use Intel 80 GB.
Do I need any Firmware Upgrade or Upgrade for VISTA ?
Thanks for help

Hi
Since Qosmio F50 support an SATA HDD controller you should use an SSD drive which supports an SATA interface
But the SSD drive is not many different from a common HDD and therefore it should not be needed to update any firmware.
Usually you would need to install just an SATA driver in order to recognize the SSD drive.

The Hard disc in this model is same size as SSD 2.5" drive?

    Hi
As mentioned above: the SATA controller is supported so you will need to use a SATA SSD drive usually it should not be a big problem to upgrade the notebook with an SSD drive in some cases it could be possible that the SSD firmware needs to be updated but this depends on the SSD drive manufacturer
However, the SSD drive is much faster than a common HDD. Therefore you should notice a faster performance

With all due respect, I would not blame the SSD drives, as much as I would question your network.
Is your DHCP server just slow and/or overwhelmed? What about PortFast?
Get your network guys to document the latency of DHCP request for your location. If necessary, have them do a trace.

  • Upgraded my 2009 iMac with ssd drive

    Hello
I wanted to share my experience with upgrading my late 2009 iMac replacing the DVD drive with a 240GB SSD drive and upgrading the hard drive to a 3TB hard drive. Back a year ago I upgraded the factory 1TB with a seagate 2TB which was the main internal drive holding the osx. With needing more room I discovered the seagate 3TB also had the necessary heat sensor connector, so I knew that 3TB drive would work. Adding the 240GB SSD was a last minute decision. Plus, I seldom use the factory standard DVD drive and discovered that my LG brand USB dvd drive actually works when attached to the iMac. Operates just like the factory DVD drive.
So having done an upgrade before on this machine, I was not too concerned, but have to add that all did not go well this time.
Alter removing the screen and all the screws, then while carefully unplugging all the wires attached to the monitor, that one plug labeled LCD TEMP, that tiny little plug, broke at the circuit board. I was not using too much pressure and suspect the stress on these delicate connections had reached the limit. Both from the previous upgrade, and now another. The plug was simply stressed and ready to give way.
Maybe this plug was defective, I don't know, but the snap-in plug pulled the top of the black plastic circuit board connector off, exposing the two copper connector prongs. Not only that, but the two copper prongs that were now exposed were curled upward. Making re-attachment of the plug near impossible. So I figured maybe i could re-attach the tiny LCD TEMP plug back onto the exposed prongs and then electrical tape over to hold in-place. But first I had to somehow get the curl out of the two copper connector prongs for the plug to connect.
Well, while using a small screw driver to try to flatten out the curled copper prongs, one copper prong exceeded its stress level and broke off. Could not take the stress of being bent and messed with. Everything inside these machines are extremely delicate, as everyone knows only too well that has ever opened up their imac.
And now, a broken LCD TEMP circuit board connector. What to do, what to do?
Kill two birds with one stone.....
But first I wondered if this LCD TEMP sensor would keep the system from operating, so I put the machine back together, half way together, and powered it up.
The machine came to life, however, the CPU fan was running crazy fast 3800 and noisy as ****.
Googling this, I came across another person that had the same LCD TEMP cable break, and saying their CPU fan went crazy in the same way.
So I realized somehow the system needed this LCD TEMP connector, connected.
What to do, what to do?
I ran over to radio shack and bought the lowest wattage soldering iron they sold.
Now, this killing two birds with one stone part...
I had to somehow solder two new wires onto the spot where this LCD TEMP board connector attached to the circut board.
No easy task since there was only a hair-lines space between the two circuit board connectors. I had to somehow achieve the impossible.
And while at it, killing off the second bird, I could replace this LCD TEMP wire itself with new much longer wire set, making this disassemble - reassemble thing much easier.
    Well I pulled it off.
I was able to solder two new wires to the spots on the circuit board where this LCD TEMP connector sits.
Without bleeding solder onto the partner connector just a hairs-line spaced between.
Then I patched in this new and longer pair of wires from the circuit board LCD TEMP to the monitor LCD TEMP sensor.
And finally, replaced the DVD drive with the new 240GB SSD drive, slapped the machine back together half way just enough to power it up, cloned the osx hard drive to the SSD drive, "option-restart" the machine and booted from the new SSD drive, everything working as it should.
I even dismounted the orginal internal hard drive holding the osx, and ran the system to ensure everything worked, which it did.
Next, tore the iMac back down, replaced the 2TB hard drive with a new 3TB hard drive, and for a final time slapped the system back together.
    Everything is operating perfect,
Naturally, had to format the new 3TB hard drive, and will move all my iTunes media back to that new drive I had temporally stored on an external USB drive.
Fans are all running at normal speeds.
System is once again silent when running.
And this is the last and final time I will ever upgrade this particular machine sober.
Just some advice, this is some of the unforeseen mishaps that can occur when upgrading any iMac.
And this could have ended in disaster.
Luckily however, I had just enough luck and experience to get thru the hurdles, now I have a better, bigger, faster iMac.
Like they say, this self upgrading is not for the faint of heart.
For awhile I seen myself listing this on eBay as a dead 27" late 2009 iMac for sale for parts.
Not the case, well at least not the case this time....

Congratulations on not panicing and stating it like it is. Clearly upgrading the internals of an iMac is not for the faint of heart, I plan on keeping your post if for no other reason to show others why a do-it-yourself on an iMac is a pretty foolish thing to undertake.

  • How to upgrade to m.2 ssd as boot drive in Ideapad U430 touch?

I would like to install a 128 gb m.2 SSD (NGFF) as the boot drive for this system while leaving the 500 gb hybrid drive for file storage and applications.  Can you recommend a step-by-step process to accomplish this?  I haven't seen other forum posts where the m.2 drive would be the boot drive.  The O/S is Win 8.1 and the only system backup I have made to this point is on the main drive. (Specific model number is 20270; part number 59399722 if that helps!)  Any help or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

    Is this a good idea?
I assume moving the os to the m.2 ssd drive?
    How to do this step-by-step?

Hi and welcome to lenovo forum...
unfortunatly , even when you found a minipci-e SSD ... there is no option to boot from minipci-e ...
and only a few minipci-e cards will work at all ...if its not on the whitelist they wont work...
and SSD in 2,5" Sata-HDD form is faster, "cheeper" yes it is  and could replaced the HDD without  trouble like above..

  • How to upgrade retina samsung oem ssd firmware

    Hi Guys
A friend of mine has given me their ssd drive from their 2012 retina,as they are upgrading.
I will be putting it in a windows laptop via a normal sata adaptor.
How can I update the firmware for it, also where can I get it from?
    Will the magician softwae work?
I know normally an update would be done from the mac app store but I do not have acess to an apple.
    any help appreciated.

    Hi-
It isn't necessary to upgrade the firmware for an ATI card. Most available upgrade options will work fine in Leopard.
The ATI 9800 Pro Mac works very well with Leopard, and supports Core Image, which Leopard uses more so than Tiger.
Personally, with two different versions of the 9800 (one 256mb, and one 128mb) there have been no issues with firmware.
With a flashed (converted PC) graphics card, most all people are using the latest ROM version. Beyond this, nothing else is necessary.

  • How to upgrade Sata Hdd to SSD on Mac Book Pro 13"?

I have a Mac book Pro 13" and I want to upgrade my Harddrive to SSD. Also want to know how to do cloning, so that no data loss will be there.
    Regards
    Sid J

what you do is first put the the SSD in an external enclosure and hook it up to your mac.  Then, open disc utility in your utilities folder.  Erase the new SSD and reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Then, run the cloning program and it will make a mirror image of the HDD currently inside your mac to the new SSD in the external enclosure.  Then, remove the SSD from the external enclosure and put in it your mac.  All done!  .  If you are unfamiliar with an external enclosure, they are very inexpensive..here is one I own: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817106115. Any further questions you my have either now or during the process, don't hesitate to ask, I have done this process a handful of times and it is very easy even for the non-techie.

and wich could be the best ssd unit ( Crucial 256 GB m4 2.5-Inch or OCZ Technology 256GB Vertex 4 Series 2.5-Inch)

    Hi,
Your laptop supports only SATA II connection so it's a bit pointless to buy any SATA III SSD as they will work as SATA II drives. The service manual says that DM4 laptops support 160GB solid state drives so any SSD should work as I don't think that the capacity is a limit. OCZ, Intel, Corsair and some others have good drives so pick one of the SATA II series of these manufacturers. I have seen some cases that a SATA III SSD didn't work but a SATA II one did on older laptops. Perhaps the newest SATA controllers and older BIOSes might cause some compatibility issues..

  • Can't resize partition after upgrading to Yosemite (using SSD drive)

I upgraded to 10.10 and using SSD drive now. When I was using OS X 10.8.5, I could freely resize partition but not anymore. I guess because of the SSD drive and the new version of OS X, and Logical Volume Group could be involved. I don't want to waste 80 GB of SSD drive so really looking for a solution now. Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I had to go back to my old snow leopard install DVD, use the disk utility on that to repartition the drive. I made 2 partitions, installed Snow Leopard on one, used that to install Yosemite on the other partition and trashed the snow leopard install.
I haven't yet tried the Yosemite USB install method which would have probably been faster as I could have avoided installing SL.

  • How do I copy the removed SSD drive from a water-damaged MB Pro to another Mac?

My son's MacBook Pro (early 2012) was ruined by a pint of water. The insurance company kept the laptop but returned its 256GB SSD drive. I've looked everywhere online – Apple's telephone support is as good as useless given they want a serial number and want to charge me £35 – for a caddy or SATA adaptor of some sort to copy files from the Sandisk SSD drive. I basically need something I can plug the SSD drive into that has a USB lead to plug it into another Mac so I can copy photos, word docs and MP3s. I can't believe it could be so difficult - it's just a hard drive, after all. Your help greatly appreciated.

This should do the trick, and will work with laptop and desktop drives too. And it doesn't rely on power from the USB port to make the drive work, which can sometimes be an issue.

Turn the Mac on (or reboot it) and press command-option-R as soon as you hear the startup chime. Hold the keys down until you see a globe, then release. When the Recovery Menu appears you choose Disk Utility and format the SSD for use in a Mac (Erase>Set Format to MacOS Extended (Journaled), then exit Disk Utility and choose Install OSX
You will need to be connected to the Internet and your Mac should detect your network and ask for a password automatically when Recovery Starts.

  • New Mac Pro - won't boot up with SSD drives attached

I have a new Mac Pro. It came with the stock 1TB HD. I installed two OWC SSD drives in the two optical drive bays. I booted up and the MacPro saw the two new drives. I set up the two new drives into a RAID0 setup with Disk Utility which worked fine. Then I cloned the 'Macintosh HD' drive so that I could use the two new SSDs as my boot drive.
When I removed the stock 1TB drive the machine will not boot up. I am stuck on the gray startup screen and it never even makes it to the Apple logo.
Even worse, when I reconnect the stock 1TB drive the machine will still not boot up if either or both of the SSD drives are connected. When I remove the SSD drives the machine boots fine.
Very weird - must be some weird RAID stuff going on.
    Any ideas?
    David

    Hi dschamis
Just out of interest, what application did you use to clone from your HDD to the OWC SSD?
I had the same problem, but I was using only one SSD, when I cloned from a VelociRaptor 300GB HDD to an OCZ Agility EX SSD in December 2009.
The SSD "bricked", and when I contacted OCZ they told me that they did not recommend cloning from a HDD to a SSD. In fact they definitely advised against doing so.
I had used SuperDuper to clone from the HDD to the SSD.
When I received the replacement SSD ( OCZ sent me their top of their range Vertex EX), I didn't take any chances, and I did a clean install of the Mac OS and all my applications.
Everything was 100% OK, and I have not had a single problem with the SSD since then, but I never clone to it or from it. I just use Time Machine to back up to a WD My Book SE II 2T external drive, but I do have the original 640GB Apple (WD) HDD as a backup/emergency system boot drive in an external enclosure.
I have just ordered, and received, an OWC MercuryExtreme Pro RE SSD, which I will be using as my system boot drive solely for my photography related applications, and I will use the Vertex EX for the remainder of my applications.
However, I am not even going to risk using SuperDuper to clone the OS or any of the applications from the Vertex EX to the OWC SSD, although OCZ said it was OK to clone from SSD to SSD, and I will do a clean install of the Mac OS and the photography related applications on the Mercury Extreme Pro RE SSD.
Hope all goes well when you receive your replacement SSD.
If in doubt do a clean install of the Mac OS!
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Should i use "HDD protection utility" in connection with SSD drive?

I've replaced HDD with SSD and reinstalled my Windows. Accidentally I've installed "HDD protection utility"? Is it absolutely useless in system with SSD? Should I uninstall this utility?
    Thank you.

Since one month I use SSD with my Satellite Notebook. I have installed original recovery image that includes HDD protection utility. I can start it but it is inactive.
Strange thing is that with HDD it was inactive too. To be honest I dont care about that. It is preinstalled but I have disabled it from automatic start-up.
In my opinion you can remove it from the system.
