How to upgrade standby doubt

hello,
I read various Oracle documents, guides and metalink notes but I still have some doubts. Perhaps I missed something.
starting env: dataguard (manual config, without broker) env with primary and physical standby in 11.2.0.1 on Linux x86_64
I don't want to go with rolling upgrades or similar; I'm on a test environment and also for production I can tolerate some downtime during the week end.
My upgrade scenario is to install sw in new oracle_home as recommended.
One note: the link provided in note 884522.1 gives a file for preupgrade (utlu112i.sql) that is not current ... I had to make a clean install of 11.2.0.2 and get the file provided inside rdbms/adin directory....
I start runInstaller with primary DB open and physical in mount with managed recovery and in sync
I install new binaries and then complete the dbua step (100% without errors)
I only had to change my log_archive_dest_2 that was
service=TESDB1DR ASYNC DB_UNIQUE_NAME=TESDB1DR VALID_FOR=(primary_role, online_logfile) COMPRESSION=ENABLE
and worked in 11.2.01. but dbua complained about syntax and so I had to change in:
service=TESDB1DR ASYNC DB_UNIQUE_NAME=TESDB1DR VALID_FOR=(online_logfiles,primary_role) COMPRESSION=ENABLE
Now I have my primary db in new version.
dbua didn't update the tnsnames.ora, so I get this on primary alert.log
Thu Nov 04 15:25:33 2010
Error 12154 received logging on to the standby
PING[ARC2]: Heartbeat failed to connect to standby 'TESDB1DR'. Error is 12154.
while at the end of upgrade, on standby alert.log I got:
TNS-00507: Connection closed
nt secondary err code: 0
nt OS err code: 0
Error 12537 received logging on to the standby
FAL[client, USER]: Error 12537 connecting to TESDB1 for fetching gap sequence

What are the steps to do at standby? The same as in primary:
1) install binaries for 11.2.0.2
2) upgrade db
and only at the end
3) modify parameters on both instances tnsnames.ora so that they are able again to communicate
Can the standby db stay in mount + recovery mode while upgrading?
I hope I have not to refresh the whole standby....
Thanks for suggestions,
Gianluca

What do you mean by "Do I have to manually update my .ora files?" and where Primary or Standby? When on standby I select install software only, I get a new $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin that is empty
So I presume I have to copy my 11.2.0.1 tnsnames.ora and listener.ora to the new path
And to change inside my listener.ora the line
(ORACLE_HOME = /app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1)
matching now
(ORACLE_HOME = /app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_2)
at least for the instances I want to upgrade (if more than one)
Also, I noticed that upgrading the primary with dbua, it got as a result this kind of "strange" tnsnames.ora:
# tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: /app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_2/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
TESDB1 =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = primary_server_name)(PORT = 1522))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = TESDB1)
LISTENER_TESDB1 =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = primary_server_name)(PORT = 1522))
And this listener.ora
# listener.ora Network Configuration File: /app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_2/network/admin/listener.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION_LIST =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1522))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = primary_server_name)(PORT = 1522))
ADR_BASE_LISTENER = /app/oracle
So it seems it didn't update the network config. It has no knowledge of my standby TESDB1DR
I presume I can copy listener.ora and tnsnames.ora as configured in 11.2.0.1...
From 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2 I don't think about major changes in these files... am I correct?
Thanks for your time.
Gianluca

  • Does anyone know how to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.3 ios?

After being tricked by the fast talking smoothy helper at Apple store in London to buy a micky mouse ipodtouch (fourth generation) two years ago I am stuck at ios 4.1 and find that all the useful applications need 4.3 or more. So I went to the trouble of letting the macbook stay open all night to load yet another micky mouse version of itunes so that I can upload the more recent version of ios and now (since I don't want to continually have a lot of rubbish on the ipod I disabled the automatic sync "feature") I can only go round in circles  whereby the only real possibility left is to turn on the autosync feature. I have had messages like "your ipod will be completely erased if you proceed" and "do you wish to fiddle another few days with this nasty system, then click on continue" and so on.
Does anyone know how to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.3 ios?
That would be great (maybe) because otherwise I will toss this children's waste product on the floor and set up my HD camera to show how easy it is to smash the brightly lit screen into pieces and relieve myself of trash which Apple sell to unsuspecting gullible humans who believe that they are not being tricked by such a nice company who produce shiny colourful gadgets which only work for a month or two before becoming 100% obsolete.
Great to hear from those who have wasted many months of their lives and discovered how to trick the system into doing a simple update operation!
I am insulted by the tricks that fool many and that apple pretend are "necessary".

Illaass, your help is amazing - miles better than anyone working in this part of the world who is paid - and you do this for free - because, like me, you LOVE to help people!
BUT, as I said above -
    1. There is nothing "mobile" under Application Support. For whatever reason.
    2. Devious - that Apple has set up iPod to not show in Finder - a red herring and sign that corruption is visible.
I will try iFunBox next and it sounds like they provide this for the more serious users but use a trivial name to excuse further strangeness.

There are purchased items on the iPod that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating the iPod. Are you sure you want to continue?
    I get

Please do not interrupt the update, which may take an hour or longer to complete.
    Cancel          Update
And then I wait for hours to arrive at the above mentioned

    and then as above
An error occurred while backing up this iPod (0xE8000084). Would you like to continue to update this iPod?
Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPod.
    Cancel                Continue
and so we are back to where we always land - the user is left in the Apple designed sabotage situation which annoyed me so much initially.
"Most users will give up at this point, loose all the data or buy yet another disposable from Apple. Less than 3% will work their way to this site and 90% of the 3% will leave the iPod to gather dust in the hope that someone will help later. In all, Apple gains, since people blame themselves for "mistakes" which Apple programmed to throw out users who do not take the 100% Apple path. But Illaass and myself still play the game of "trying to fix" something which Apple don't allow."  was the comment which I was going to write but decided against it, adding no value to the conversation other than explaining one reality which we all hoped could be wrong but which I thought to have a very high chance of being closer to the truth.
Apologies for my doubts towards the integrity of the creators.

Recheck: Under Application Support "mobilesync" folder has appeared (MobileMeSyncClient has also appeared [while again trying to update iPod] with zero size) - Good news, a Backup file is there, but it is only 3GB while my iPod has 32GB and is close to full (800MB free space).

The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9).

So it looks like I may have lost all the important pictures documenting various items all around Europe for the last two years - luckily I moved a year ago from the iPod toy camera to a Panasonic real camera with SD card which can be read on any computer. Hence important items lost may only be older than one year rather than the most recent items.
Glad I have changed to Panasonic since they don't try to screw you when you don't use their system.
I will now check the "more information" rather than just click on "OK" since I am of the 3% who "don't accept cr*p".
For full information I quote that the iPod now shows a screen with a USB ikon, an upward arrow and an iTunes ikon (all micky mouse language which reduces transparant, clear and technical discussion and thus covers the trail of "where things went wrong").
The iPod is still attached to the computer but the above MMTALK may mean that the iPod should be attached via USB to the mac. I record much of this activity on Video to be able to later prove EXACTLY what occurred, rather than having to rely on screenshots and opinions. We are after all dealing with important items which may later be required to be shown in court, as evidence against fraudsters.
The "More Information" link leads to
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes

    ok
it has appeared now at least six times interferring with anything else I do. Each time I try to write, this message appears and blocks, but only when I write. I tried to do a carriage return and the message appeared taking the carriage return as acceptance of the OK in the

    ok
Message. But since I have not removed the USB and keep returning to this message I am able to write for a few seconds (now 30 seconds or more) and the message remains on the screen but not blocking this conversation. It appears to be random but in fact as you can later see from the video, it is not reappearing each periodic number of seconds but as I reach a new comment.
I will try to close iTunes so that this can be stopped (I clicked on OK and it appeared another few times, each time I clicked on ok and now it has left me in peace to write here although iTunes is still not yet closed).
Difficult to log down all the strange behaviour but I think you can get the gist of what is going on.

Should I remove the iPod and stop iTunes? I have a nasty feeling turning to indifference since I have video footage which will verify all the above in a court of law if later required. The truth must always win over any devious attempts at forcing people to do things they don't want to ;-)

  • How to Upgrade (legacy setup) 5508 wlc in HA

How to Upgrade 5508 wlc in HA (both the WLC with permanant AP license only, i.e, without HA license).
    As per
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/7-5/High_Availability_DG.pdf
Both the WLCs have a valid AP Count license
    • The CLI should be used to configure one WLC as the Standby WLC (as mentioned in the
configuration section) provided it satisfies the requirement of minimum permanent license count.
This condition is only valid for the 5500 WLC, where a minimum of 50 AP Permanent licenses are
needed to be converted to Standby. There is no restriction for other WLCs such as the WiSM2, 7500,
    and 8500.
    • AP-count license information will be pushed from Active to Standby.
    • In the event of a switchover, the new Active WLC will operate with the license count of the previous
Active WLC and will start the 90-day countdown.
    • The WLC configured as Secondary will not use its own installed license, and only the inherited
license from the active will be utilized.
    • After 90-days, it starts nagging messages. It will not disconnect connected APs.
    • With the new WLC coming up, HA SKU at the time of paring will get the AP Count:
    – If the new WLC has a higher AP count than the previous, the 90-day counter is reset.
    – If the new WLC has a lower AP count than the previous, the 90-day counter is not reset.
    – After switchover to a lower AP count, the WLC offset timer will continue and nagging messages
will be displayed after time expiry.
    My query is:
How can we upgrade the WLC version in this scenatio (where both the WLC have only permanent
AP License and not the HA license), Is it the same as done with HA controller or some othe procedure?
    Pls comment.

    Thanks Freerk for the comments,
But my query is, What would be the procedure for image upgradation after configuring HA between both the controllers (Primary-Secondary).
Will it be same as with the Primary-HA controller, or do i've to upgrade them individually and
    re-configure HA again.

  • Upgrading Standby Database

    Hello Expert !!
Once again I need you expert advice. We have a production database on 9.2.0.5, which we would like to upgrade to 10.2.0.3. A Physical Data Guard configuration is present for this database. The size of the database is more than 1 TB.
Upgrading Primary database is straight forward but how do I upgrade the standby database and continue the Data Guard configuration.
While upgrading the primary we would startup database with upgrade option and then startup-shutdown database couple of times. While upgrading standby how do I startup-shutdown it? (I mean normally we would normally mount the database and then open it as standby database and then place it in recovery mode).
Thanks for sharing your expertise !!!

I dont want you to walk-in and perform the upgrade for me.

  • Hello, can someone tell me where i can find a document how to upgrade a cisco 6880 running vss

I copied the ios to bootdisk, but when I change the boot system and reload my standby peer de standby peer starts up in rommon mode. I need the correct parameters for the boot command for a 6880. On the cisco site I can only find how to upgrade  a 6500 with vss,but I need the documentation how to upgrade a cisco 6880. Can someone please help me to find this . Thank you.

There are several methods.  Both methods has downtime.  One method is FSU/eFSU, which I will NOT go into, is an "automated" method of upgrade.  The automation, if it works, include booting each chassis one at a time.
The second method works well for me.  Before I begin, it is very, very important that you check the MD5 hash value of the IOS file you've downloaded against the MD5 hash value found in the Cisco website.
    1.  Copy the IOS to the sup-bootdisk:.
    2.  Copy the  IOS to the slavesup-bootdisk:
    3.  Change the boot variable string to point to the IOS of your choice.  Additionally, you can specify a second boot variable string to point to your OLD IOS.  This is very handy/important if your chassis attempts to boot the new IOS you've copied and failed.   It is important to remove the old boot variable string before changing.
    4.  Ensure your config-registry is 0x2102.
    5.  Save the config first and copy the startup-config to an external media:  CF or TFTP
    6.  Reboot the chassis.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to upgrade First Generation Touch to use Remote for Apple TV

    Hello and thanks in advance.
Can anyone tell me how to upgrade the OS for a 1st Generation iPod Touch so that it can use the Remote App from I tunes to control the Apple TV device. It needs to be the 3.1.2 version, but Apple seems to offer only 3.1    I found the 3.1.2 version on a non-apple site and attempted to download and install it but it didn't work out. (Error 14). I was expecting to control the TV with my 1G Touch and am a little disappointed with Apple that the older Touch units seemingly cannot do this.  Any help appreciated.

You can buy 3.1 thru iTunes then use it to upgrade to 3.1.3.

    Dear Doron
Solution Manager system will never physically participate in the upgrade of a Netweaver Server. It will only help you to find the right files via the maintenance optimizer. Also if you want to develop / use a Project for your upgrade you could use the upgrade roadmap and then use Solution Manager as a Project Management tool for the upgrade.
Besides this there will be no guide available for "upgrading" a system, since the upgrade roadmap is generic and the maintenance optimizer feature is isolated from the roadmap. You will have to follow the upgrade guides available on
    http://service.sap.com/instguides.
Hope that this answers your query.
