How to upgrade system disk without reinstalling?

Here's what I want to do: Buy a nice large new HD, copy my current system disk onto the new one, and then use the new one instead. I don't want to reinstall -- just do an image copy. However, I want the new disk to be larger. What is the most foolproof way of doing this?
Can I boot off a CD, mount the system disk read-only, use disk copy to copy the system disk over to the new disk (even though the new disk is larger)?
I'm sure the answer to this question is on this forum somewhere, but I looked and could not find it.
Thanks much for suggestions.

There's a couple of ways to do this. Assuming you want to add the HD to an internal slot, hook it up, following the instructions in your Setting up Manual (find it at http://search.info.apple.com/?search=Go&lr=lang_en&kword=&type=kmanual&newstype= &q=g5%20setting%20up), launch Disk Utility, select the HD, erase and format it for Mac OS Extended, selecting Options->zero out data, and quit Disk Utility. Once the HD's erased and formatted, do one of these:
1. Launch Disk Utility, click on the restore tab, drag the current disk into the source window, the new HD into the destination window, and click Restore. This requires that the new HD is physically larger than the old HD.
2. Use Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. and make a bootable clone/backup of the current HD onto the new HD. This requires that the new HD is larger than the Used size of the old HD.

  • How to upgrade hard drive without resinstalling Mac OS X

Hello everyone. I have a MacBook Pro 17'' with the original 160GB HD but now I want to upgrade my hard drive to a Seagate 500GB. My question is, how can I upgrade the HD without reinstalling and setting up all my stuff again?
Can this be done with TimeMachine and a Time Capsule? Any other option?
    Thanks in advance.
    David

yes, this can be done with Time machine. you'll need an external drive (could be a Time capsule or a directly attached drive). make backup of your current system. then replace the hard drive. then boot from the leopard install DVD and use the system restore utility in the utilities menu at the top to restore your old system from the backup onto the new hard drive. note that the new drive should be properly formatted: Mac os extended journaled format with GUID partition scheme. you'll most have to reformat the drive using disk utility first before using the restore utility.
another option is to put your old hard drive into an external hard drive enclosure (USB or firewire), install the new hard drive in the MB, then boot from the external drive and clone it to the new internal. you can use CCCloner or Superduper for cloning. again, reformat the new internal first. or you can clone your internal to an external (if you have a regular external drive but don't have an enclosure), then replace the internal drive, boot from the external and clone it back to the internal.

  • Is it possible to reinstall the System Preferences without reinstalling Lion?

My System Preferences application works fine, except for the Network panel.  When I try to start Network the system essentially hangs, i.e., I get the spinning color wheel and I can do very little else without large delays.  All other panels work as expected.  I have tried this many times through numerous reboots and power cycles.  the problem first appeared last Saturday when I plugged in an ethernet cable for the first time in several months; ethernet had previously work fine.  So, can I reinstall System Preferences without reinstalling Lion in its entirety?  I have a 2007 Macbook (white) that cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion.

Yes, I did too the first time. These improvements creep up on us.
Stephanie, I just responded to another posting of yours with a Time Machine question. Multiple postings divert resources and you may end up with contradictory information.
An install from the (grey) 10.6 disk will not erase your data. However, if you are using a TM backup that will write over everything and current data will be lost.
As I understand your two posts, I suggest install the operating system from the 10.6 disk.
Copy what data you can to your external hard disk.
    Restore from the TM backup.
A restore from the Time Machine backup as I say will delete everything you have and replace it with the backup you select (depends on date). You can then transfer any files you copied to the hard disk if these are needed.

My Windows 7 Professional desktop system hard disk got corrupted and I took the opportunity to install an SSD for a new system disk and reinstall Windows.  The system is up and running on the SSD, with my old system disk now used for storage as it is still readable.  The only Adobe product I have reinstalled so far is Reader XI but I would like to reinstall Elements 8 and Acrobat 9 without taking up more licences as both are also installed on my laptop.  Can you point me to the best way to do this?  - Thanks

  • How to upgrade system from serial communication to parallel communication

    Hi,
I am working on Lab VIEW 8.5.In my project I am using ADAM cards(7) for analog/digital inputs/outputs. Communication is done via RS 232 serial cable. Right now my system is working fine, but if i want to make it more fast i will need to use parallel communication right? Because Simultaneous inputs and outputs are processed. How much my communication file will change? Which card i should use?
How to upgrade system? On which factors it depends or it affects? I need guide lines.
    Thank you

    Hi
In your setup you have a ADAM 4250 RS232/485 repeater talking with 7 instruments in a network. Each instrument have a unique address, and you can only address 1 instrument at a time. If you need more speed you have to insert more ADAM 4250 units in your system and more RS232 ports on the PC. Identical ADAM instruments may receive commands over the same communication line, but transmit data on a unique communication line. You can not use the parallel port in your setup at all. This is not a Labview problem but a hardware problem. If speed is critical maybe the Ethernet I/O Modules: ADAM-6000 series are better for your setup
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

  • Upgrading System Disk

I currently have a 40GB System Disk and a 120GB 2nd Disk in my G4 Powermac. I've purchased a second 120GB Disk because I want to replace the 40GB one. My question is do I need to do a fresh system install on the new disk or is there a way of copying everything, including the operating system from the old one to the new?
    Many thanks

    Hi-
    Yes, there is a way.
Temporarily remove the current 120GB drive. Install the new drive.
Boot normally, and use Disk Utility to format the new drive.
    Then, download SuperDuper!.
Use SD! to clone the 40GB drive to the new drive.
This will give you an exact duplicate of you current system drive, with all files, settings, etc., as they are now.
When done with the clone, set the newly cloned 120GB drive as startup drive in System Preferences, and restart.
Test the new system drive, to make sure all applications function, mail works, data is present, etc.
When all has checked out, remove the 40GB drive, and reinstall the old 120GB drive.
    All done.

  • How to Upgrade System HDD on a T43?

Hi everybody.  I'm new here, so forgive me if this has been asked and answered already.  I've searched the forums and the KB, and haven't found quite the answer I'm looking for.
Is there a good, step-by-step guide for upgrading the system hard drive on a T43?  I've seen a lot of valuable discussion about avoiding the dreaded 2010 error, which I'll take to heart in selecting a new drive; but I haven't seen a guide that tells me, for instance, how to clone an image of my old C: drive onto the new one, so that my OS and applications will work.  I understand how to do that on a desktop machine (i.e., I don't know how, but the instructions I've found on the web make sense to me); only I don't know to what extent I can use those instructions on the T43.  I don't have the system installation disk (bought the computer used), so I'd like to avoid having to reinstall the system.  I also don't have an Ultra Bay HDD, but I do have a CD burner.
Getting back to choice of new drives, and that pesky 2010 error, most of the discussion of those topics on these boards seems to be a few years old.  Has anything changed since 2008?  Is there a current list of replacement drives that will run (with or without monkeying with the BIOS) in a T43? (The list I found here seems to date back to 2009 at the latest.)
I realize I'm dealing with an outdated computer to begin with, and I have a more modern one.  I just want this one for basic word-processing, email, and web-surfing when I'm on the road; but the slow speed and limited storage of the 40GB HDD are inconvenient, and I'd like to do what I can to supe it up a little.
    Thanks for any advice!

Any drive that you buy new today will throw the "2010 error".
Samsung HM160HC would be my preferred choice.

That being said, I've been running non-approved drives in T43/p units for years with no ill effects. YMMV.

  • How to Upgrade Hard Disk on Lenovo 3000V100. Copying the IBM_Service hidden partition - solution

For anyone else who wants to upgrade their hard drive I offer the following solution.
The problem is that simply copying the C: drive over to the new hard drive doesn't work.  The new drive hangs when booting.  It turns out that Lenovo in its wisdom(?) requires that a hidden partition must be copied as well, the IBM_Service partition of 5.1G.  I tried multiple ways of copying the drive that did not work
    - Apricorn EZ copy didn't see my new drive at all - that may well be because I was working with a 2004 version - they haven't responded to my email questioning that.
    - DriveImage XML copied the C: drive with no problem, but couldn't see the hidden partition in copying mode.
    What worked?
I used my copy of Acronis True Image 11 to do the copying, making sure to keep the hidden partition the exact same size since I'd had indications in a Lenovo forum that was important.
Just boot from the CD.  You'll have to use the manual mode.
The interface is a bit unnerving because you keep having to go "back" to really go to the next step in making the partitions the size you want.  Other than that it works very well.
This worked flawlessly. The machine booted with no problems. I now have three times the disk space.

  • How to repair a disk without installation CD

    Hey everyone,
My macbook has been acting up and has been spitting out CDs/DVDs lately... I checked my disk and it said:
This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with anpther disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
Only there's one problem... I don't know where my installation CD is. I also have Snow Leopard if that helps.
Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

Does single user mode work?  (cmd-s at startup)
If it will boot that far, try:  fsck -fy
You really need that installation CD... just in case you need to reinstall. : )
