How to use airport express as wifi extender?

I have a gateway wifi router from AT&T and I want to extend the wifi range but having problem configuring it. First when I plugged the airport express my Mac's airport utility cannot locate it. Then I decide to hard wire it and my Mac recognized it but it asked for my password when this is my first setup. After resetting airport I managed to bypass the password but now it seems to be picking up another network near by. After changing it to my provider the light on my airport is still blinking and whenever I click on the airport icon on the airport utility it will indicate that the wifi network I have chosen cannot be found and that I should make sure that my main router is plugged. So does anyone who uses AT&T's gateway router has any success in connecting with the express as an extender?

The Amber light is now steady.
The light is green when a device is configured correctly.
The main elements for a roaming configuration are as follows:
o  The remote AirPort connects using Ethernet
o  Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
("Extend" is used only with Apple devices when they connnect using wireless only....not Ethernet)
o  Wireless network name on the AirPort is the same as the main router
o  Wireless Security setting ont the AirPort must match the main router
o  Wireless Password on the AirPort must match the main router
o  The AirPort must be configured to operate in Bridge Mode

  • Can I use AirPort Express as booster/extender to LinkSys router signal?

I have LinkSys N router (which I got free, else would've bought AirPort), its signal isn't strong enough in office room.  Can I use AirPort Express as a booster/extender?  Some sources say Express can only talk to another Express, others say it can communicate with the LinkSys.  Which is it?  I don't want to spend the money for two Expresses unless I have no choice (very limited budget nowadays).
I've been hassling with this for over a month, and I'm extremely frustrated.
Thanks to anybody who can help me with this.

Most likely no. That is because most non-Apple router's implementation of WDS is not compatible ... and this is true the other way around. It is true that some early Linksys models, mainly the WRT-54 series were compatible, but I have not seen anything since then that is.

  • How to use Airport Express as a sound output device

    Guys,
Is there a way that I can use Airport Express as a sound output device? So, I can play all the sound on my HIFI.
    thanks in advance

In order to listen to the non-iTunes audio streams through your Airport Express you will need to use the third party software Airfoil.

  • How to use Airport Express to extend range in conjunction with Belkin N Wireless Router

I would like to know how I can extend the range of my Belkin N1 Wireless Router using the the Apple Airport Express? I saw a similar post to this question but the results talk about using this in conjunction with time capsule - I only have a Belkin router and the Airport Express.
If so, can someone help me to find out which settings/configuration I need to set of my Router and Airport Express in order the extend the range of my network.
Thank you in advance for your support.

Thank you for your quick reply. Can you please expand upon how to set up the 'bridge' mode?
I tried connecting the AE via Ethernet from the Belkin router but was not successful in being able to get any additional coverage. I feel like I am missing a vital set of instructions with set-up/configuration details.
    Thanks again.

  • Using airport express as range extender?

I have a airport express that I use as my primary router.
I also have the direct plug in airport express that I'd like to use as a range extender. I'd like to make this one fully wireless so that I can connect in an another room. However, I'm not sure that's possible. Does anyone know how to go about using this as an extender ?

Temporarily, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the older A1264 AirPort Express
Power up the older Express for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the side of the Express for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac
Click on the Other Wi-Fi Devices button, then click on AirPort Express xxxxxxx
AirPort Setup will open up and take a minute to analyze the network and announce that the A1264 Express will be configured to extend the new AirPort Express network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the older Express and click Next
AirPort Setup will configure the older Express for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
Now you can disconnect the Ethernet cable that you used for the setup and move the older Express to a location that is about half way between the new Express and the general area that needs more wireless coverage. Power up the older Express and you should be all set.

  • Anyone know how to use airport express to bring internet to a powermac G5 model power PC G5 using airport express?

I bought an airport express and was told that I can configure it, and then move it to the G5 and connect it with the ethernet cable giving the G5 access to the network. But the laptop I first configure it to loses the connection once I remove the ethernet cable between the airport express and the modem. When I connect the G5 to the airport express nothing happens. Any ideas?

  • How to use airport express wired and wireless at the same time

    Hi,
I currently have FiOS with Verizon, they ran a coax cable to the Verizon router. I didn't ask them to switch to CAT6 cable since I have an airport extreme base station and an airport express base station (both are the newest generation). I ran a CAT6 cable from the Verizon FiOS router to my AEBS (extreme) to make it the default wireless router. The Verizon router and extreme are in one room. Now, the Airport express is in my living. I'd like to extend the wireless network from the extreme. However, I can't seem to find a way to use both wired and wireless from the airport express at the same time. It's now either via wired, or wiresless. So is there a way to get both work?

Can you tell us if you used Apple's instructions for a "roaming" network?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
Although the instructions picture a 2nd AirPort Extreme in the illustrations, the setup instructions would be exactly the same for an AirPort Express.

  • How to use AirPort Express over a dorm network

    Hi,
I used my AirPort Express at home to add wireless to my existing home network and it worked well.
However, I can't get it to work here so I'll give you every detail possible in order for you to explain me how to configure it. A million thanks in advance. (I'm giving you the specific address just to illustrate it better)
I can only use one IP address on the network which is 192.168.1.25
    The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
    The default getaway is 192.168.1.1
    The preferred DNS is: 195.235.113.3
    The alternate DNS is: 80.58.32.97
Do I have to put the AirPort Express IP address as 192.168.1.25? And can I use any range of DHCP IP addresses or I must use 192.168.1.x?
    Thanks for helping me guys

You need to use NAT in order to share the single IP address.
If you had two (one for the AX and one for your computer) then you wouldn't need to use NAT.
On the Internet Tab use the following.
    Connect using Ethernet
    Configure Manually
    IP address 192.168.1.25
    Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
    Router Address 192.168.1.1
    DNS 195.235.113.3
    80.58.32.97
    On the Network Tab
    Check Distribute IP addresses
Share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT
    I would use 10.0.1.x addressing
    On the Airport Tab
    Change Wireless Security
    Use WPA
    Use a password like this
    45fs6ue6v1d5fg7d55dsg555
You may need to add the DNS addresses to the clients in order to access the internet.
This may not work, and I would in fact advise talking to your campus network people instead.

  • Using Airport Express n to extend network

    Hi,
I have had an Airport Extreme n for a while and using it very happily, however I wanted to boost the signal to the back of my house and also use Airtunes so I bought an Airport express n. I have got the airtunes working but I am not convinced that it is extending my network.
Could someone please advise what settings I need on both the Extreme and Express for the Express to extend the network.
I am also having trouble administrating the AX, Airport Utility can see the AX but unable to enter setup unless I reset the AX with the reset pin. Any ideas anyone.

  • How to fix Airport Express slow wifi speeds

I have cable internet advertised as 20 - 30 Mbps, and a Surfboard SB6120 modem. When I plug directly into the modem, I get around 28 Mbps and am very happy with that. When I go into the Airport Express however, it slows to around 8 Mbps. The airport express is from 2009. I have tried changing it to only 802.11n (have trieed both 2.4 and 5 ghz options), and have tried changing the channel, but nothing seems to help. Is there a way to get it back up to around 28 Mbps, or do I need a new router? Thanks!

I tried the hard reset, but that didn't help. Here is what my network settings are:
The RSSI goes from -73 to -90 depending on when I check. I am about 20 feet from the router, with perfect line of sight.
Any other thoughts would be appriciated...

  • How to use Airport express via ethernet cabe/switch. iTunes does not detect

Can anyone help me help iTunes FIND my airport via ethernet?
My macbook is out of range wirelessly, but I have a jack that connects to the Airport (via a switch). How, please, can I get iTunes to "see" it?

    Yes. Thank you.
I see the "Enable iTunes Over Ethernet" option HOWEVER, it greyed out and unselectable! Now what? I think you are on the right track, but do you know why it would be greyed out? Thanks, in advance, you people at the forum are truly cool.

  • Airport Express as wifi card for Xbox Live, then connect to Extreme network

My son just got xbox Live and we're trying to use Airport Express as wifi card for xbox (connected to xbox via ethernet). We use Airport Extreme as router for the house.
We're having trouble setting up Xbox Live, keep getting stuck at getting the xbox to communicate/access the web. Error reads "can't obtain IP address from router... make sure DHCP is enabled and has a large enough address range for all devices on network.. also make sure MAC filtering allows your console's MAC address or is disabled... "
We dont' know what else to do. I'm at wit's end before giving Gates $100... Anyone know how to get connected?
    Thank you!

You can also perform a simple test to verify if you have an internet connection at the ethernet port on the AirPort Express.
Move a laptop near the Express, turn off the wireless on the laptop, and connect to the Express using an ethernet cable. See if you can open your browser and get a good solid internet connection.
If you can, the Express is setup correctly and you know that you have an internet connection reaching all the way to the Xbox.
If you can't then there is a configuration error somewhere and it will need to be identified and corrected.

  • How does one use airport express to extend a non-Apple wifi network?

Hello. The wifi signal reaching my room shows good on my macbook but weak on my ipod touch. Therefore I want to pick it up on my airport express and extend/boost it.
I have tried everything in the auto and manual methods of setup to do this, but the only thing I can manage to do is to join a wireless network wirelessly and then then connect to it through a ethernet cable from my airport express. I want to pick it up wirelessly and extend it wirelessly - is this possible? This is the reason why I bought it!
    thanks a lot, JJ

Thanks for that info. So, I have been trying to use my airport express n to extend an airport n network (for greater distance of coverage) and cannot get this to work either. I can join the other apple airport's network and then connect to the airport express by cable. I have tried all the help available here but that seems to be the only way to extend a network. But I cannot see any point in that! JJ

  • HT4259 Extend existing WiFi signal using airport express?

I have a Belkin Play Max Wireless Router Modem in my existing WiFi set up.
I want to extend its range, could I connect a Airport Express wirelessly to extend its range (as my house does not have ethernet lines built in)?
And how would I be able to do it?

Apple's "extend" setting is a proprietary feature that is designed to only work with other Apple routers. So, it would be extremely unlikely that it would work with your modem/router from Belkin.....or any other manufacturer, for that matter.
Your best bet for compatibilty is to always use wireless routers and extenders from the same manufacturer on your network. Check with Belkin to see if they have what you need.

  • How do I use airport express to extend my wireless network?

How vcan I extend the range of my wireless network using Airport Express?

It appears that you may have "join a wireless network" and "extend a wireless network" mixed up a bit.
The Express can "join" virtually any wireless network produced by any manufacturer's router if it is provided with the correct settings:
    name of the wireless network
    the correct wireless security settings
    and correct password.
"Join" is normally used for AirTunes or to connect a USB printer to the Express for remote printing.
But, the Express does not provide any additional wirless coverage when it "joins" another wireless network.
Apple's "Extend a wireless network" feature, which was introduced about 5 years ago, allows the Express to connect to another Apple "n" wireless router and then "repeat" or "extend" the wireless signal....providing more wireless coverage in the area where the Express is located.
This is a proprietary setting. Apple says it will not work with devices from other manufacturers. To our knowledge, this is correct.
Prior to 2007, Apple used a setting called WDS to allow the Express to be configured to provide more wireless coverage. Attempts were made by a number of manufacturers to standardize the WDS settings, but things were never finalized.
The result is that Apple's older "b/g" routers were sometimes compatible with WDS settings from another manufacturer. There were a handful of products....5 or 6, as I recall....that were said to work. Some did, some didn't. Linksys had a couple of models, Netgear had one, SMC another, etc.  Extremely limited.
Since WDS was never adopted as an industry standard, manufacturers developed their own WDS settings. Compatibility was extemely limited and unreliable. That continues to this day with WDS.
Bottom line....It is always best to stick with the same manufacturer throughout your network as far as routing is concerned.
If you have an newer "n" Apple router like an AirPort Extreme, the Express can extend the wireless as can along Extreme. If your Extreme is dual band, and you want to extend both bands, then you need another Extreme.
Another responder suggested to someone that they could connect the AirPort Express to a router via Ethernet.  What exactly would that achieve?
That is a completely different subject since this discussion is about extending a wireless network using wireless only.
