How to use Airport Extreme to create a second wireless network with different IP addresses behind an existing modem/router?

Hi,
I have an existing modem/router from my ISP that does DHCP and NAT with base IP 192.168.1.1 distributed in the wireless network. I use this wireless network for our private devices. I could turn off the DHCP server in this first router, but there isn't a separate setting to turn off NAT.
I want to connect my Airport Extreme (4th gen) to this existing router to create a separate wireless network for visiting guests, where IP addresses of 10.0.0.0 etc. are used. So I do not want to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode, as I would like to keep the devices on the first network 'invisible' for those on the second network. (P.S. when connected in bridge mode, the Airport works well and can distribute a network with a different name from the first. It's just that I would feel more comfortable about our privacy if the Airport were to distribute a different IP range. False security, maybe?)
I've tried doing this by 'Sharing a public IP address' in Airport Utility's Internet tab, leaving TCP/IP's setting to 'via DHCP', setting DHCP addresses to start with 10.0.0.2 up to 200 with all else blank, and not using a standard host nor NAT-PMP in the NAT tab.
When I do this the Airport complains of a 'double NAT issue'. Internet connectivity seems to be OK, but when switching between the two networks on my Mac I get complaints about my IP address being in use by another device intermittently.
Can anyone help in how to get the 'double NAT issue' resolved?

So if someone is connected to the modem/router network they will be able to see the HD I will have put in to the AirPort Extreme?
As I said above.....since the modem/router and AirPort are bridged, devices on the modem/router wireless will be able to "see" devices on the AirPort wireless, and vice versa.....

Yes, unless you plan to password protect the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.

The modem/router and AirPort Extreme are bridged. They are on the same network. All devices are on the same network when the modem/router and AirPort are bridged. Not sure how else that I can say this.
Also, because it is bridged, I shouldn't have any problems accessing the HD I will have connected to the AirPort Extreme from an external location?
Accessing devices from a remote location is never easy....and a topic for a different post/discussion. If you have a "static" Internet IP address from your provider, and have all the details on how to forward ports on your modem/router, you are off to a good start.
Apparently there is some addressing issues because devices can be seen as "Double IP" because the modem/router would have allocated IP's as well as the AirPort allocating IP's thus making connections slower until resolved
When you "bridge", all IP addresses are issued by one device. There will be no conflicts on the network, since they are bridged.
Once again, in very simple terms, you have two doors (access points) that open into the same room (network). One "door" is the modem/router and the other "door" is the AirPort Extreme. They are on the same network....("room") because they are bridged.

As we live in a rural area and our landline broadband speeds are awful, I have moved on to a 3G provider in the UK (EE/Orange) and set up the wireless modem which is working very well with an iMac. I have an Airport Extreme base station which was previously connected with an Ethernet cable to the landline router, and two Airport Express stations as Range Extenders. I would now like to use the Airport Extreme and the two Express stations to extend the range of the Alcatel WiFi device. I have tried automatic and manual set up with the Airport Utility but at the crucial step for selecting a network to extend, although the WiFi device is recognised, I get a message saying it cannot be extended.

This is a problem with a lot of cheap end wifi hotspot like devices.. sometimes you can just swap the sim out to a real 3G wireless router.. that is a better approach IMHO than wireless repeater ever will be.
In the meantime..
Have a go with the suggestion.. place the express as wireless bridge. With a computer connected to the wifi from alcatel unit.. (I am amazed Alcatel still are in domestic market.. I thought they sold out). Set the express to join the wifi.. you do this in the airport utility.. old one is easy.. but in v6 you have to trust to luck so to speak and hope the auto setup works.. tell us if you have trouble.
With the Express bridging.. you can then plug it by ethernet into the TC.. which will be in router bridge..

You can then run the connection from wireless or ethernet on the TC.. and it will relay back to the alcatel for internet.. all a bit dodgy but who knows.. it may give you what you need.
Wireless repeater is never particularly reliable in my experience. I would avoid it if possible.

Yes, if you link to the "main" wireless network on the first AirPort Extreme.

No, but you could "extend" the "main" wireless network to provide more coverage and also enable the Ethernet ports on the second AirPort Extreme.
If you connected yet another router to one of the Ethernet ports, you could configure it to create another wireless network with its own password.
But cients on the "main" network would be able to "see" devices on the other "private" network and vice versa.

TM does not work like that.
If you want files to use later.. do not use TM.
Or do not use TM to the same location. Plug a USB drive into the computer and use that as the target for the permanent backup.

Creating a seamless wireless network with 2 AExpress units

I have 2 Airport Express units in different parts of my house. I have struggled for YEARS trying to get them to create one seamless wireless network with the same name that I could float between. I have never been able to get that to work. anyone?
I know that some of the problems MAY have to do with the non-apple router settings, but I just have never gotten a clear response form anyone about weather it is doable, and/or worth doing. I would settle for 2 seperate wireless networks that didn't compete with each other and/or constantly need re-booting to stay active. I am generally the most tech savvy person I know and am consulted on IT by friends and colleageus regularly, but I just cannot figure this one out..
I am totally capable of setting this up, both in the router and the AE units, if someone can just tell me that;
1) yes it is possible and it will work, and
2) just set it up like this...

Thanks for the clarification. Check your AirPort Express devices one at a time, but other than different device names to avoid confusion.....AirPort Express 1, AirPort Express 2....for example, the settings should look this:
Open AirPort Utility , select one AirPort Express, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below th row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Your choice
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible) a good choice, but you can choose other combinations by holding down the option key on your Mac while you click on the selection box
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal an excellent choice if all of your devices are compatible with this setting
Wireless Password = Your wireless password
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings
Configure AirPort Express 2 exactly the same way and Update to save settings
Then, power down the entire network.....all devices....order is not important
Wait a moment, then start the modem/router first and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Start each AirPort Express the same way
Start each other network device one at a time about a minute apart
Check for proper network operation
IF....you did not have your AirPort Express devices in Bridge Mode before.....that is the reason why you are having issues now and also is the reason why the "roaming" network was not working.....assuming that there was a reasonable overlap in wireless coverage between the 2 Express devices, of course.
If you want to try the "roaming" setup again, assign the exact same wireless network name, security and password to both Express devices and confirm again that both are setup in Bridge Mode as the very last step before you click the Update button in AirPort Utility.
Power down the entire network and start up in sequence as well as in the example above.

I'm trying to use an Airport Extreme (1st Generation) as a wireless receiver for a Mac Pro but I can't figure out how. My main modem / wireless router (non-Apple) is upstairs. My Mac Pro is down stairs. I'm looking to get internet connection for that Mac Pro downstairs. Is it possible to use the Airport Extreme to connect the Mac Pro to the wireless internet provided by my wireless router?

Unfortunately, Apple designed their routers to work with other Apple routers. It would be extremely unilikely that the AirPort Exteme could be configured to work with a router from another manufacturer.
The AirPort Extreme would need to be configured to "Extend a wireless network", but an error message is almost surely to occur when you try this.
There are other alternatives, but they would involve more hardware. Post back if you are interested.

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only......Apple tells us that their "extend a wireless network" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers.
So, in order to use your AirPort Extreme as an extender, you would need to have another Apple router.....an AirPort Express, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Extreme as the main base station.
I haven't tested the specific Linksys model that you have, but have owned and worked with several other Linksys models, none of which were compatible with Apple for the purpose that you ask about....so I would have to say that it is extremely unlikely that your model would be compatible with the AirPort Extreme.

Fed up with Airport Extreme card errors connecting to wireless network

Since buying my black MacBook in June I have been 'enjoying' completely haphazard connection to my (encrypted) home wireless network, and been forced to sponge off some neighbour's open network half the time, as I keep getting the message 'there was an error connecting to the ... wirless network'.
I HAVE connected to my network successfully, and from time to time the ghost in my machine does let the MacBook connect to it all by itself, so there is no compatibility issue as such. I had hoped that downloading the most recent Airport Extreme Firmware Update would help, as it promised to 'improve reliability', but alas. I've tried downgrading to 10.4.9 as somebody suggested on these forums, but that didn't make any difference, so I'm now back on 10.4.10.
The whole thing is driving me completely bonkers, so if anyone has any suggestions (or would consider joining me for a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority about Apple's misleading advertisements promising that 'it just works'...) I would be most grateful.

Don't order an ethernet cable from the Apple Store, any geek worth his salt might have one in his back pocket or a few in his bag (probably calls it a "patch cord".) Even Target sells them for $7-8 but anyone in IT buys them in bulk for $1-2 or makes their own for even less (materials cost, anyway, but they do take a bit of time and skill to put the ends on correctly).
As for the wireless, I moved from a Powerbook G4 to a MBP 17" to a new MBP 15," and I have been very disappointed in how less stable the MBP wireless connection is than my old PB G4 or even my wife's four year old iBook as she sits on the couch near me merrily surfing away while I grumble. However, I have a cheapy SMC wireless router - I don't have the problem at work where we have Airport base stations or at many other places with different brand routers - it's tough to nail down, and it's **** aggravating, especially when working on a deadline.

Can't create a working wireless network (with AEBS N station)

I have a new Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n), firmware 7.2.1 and a PowerMac G4 running Leopard, with the built-in Ethernet port dead, fried by a storm.
I installed a PCI Gigabit network card which works great. I have a static IP, and no more DSL modem. I am connected directly (via fiber) to my ISP. I purchased the AEBS N to create a wireless network for my iPhone and my laptop(soon to come). But after "successfully" setting up the base station with my IP settings I cannot connect to Internet. I believe that the base station or the actual firmware is not "smart" enough to "look" to anything else but the built-in Ethernet port. It simply tells me that there is nothing connected to the WAN port (even-though I was able to upload all the settings to the AEBS)
AEBS Settings: Create a wireless network,Share an IP address, router mode and Mac connected via DHCP. The wireless network is visible by clients , but they also can't connect to the Internet.
What is wrong? Should I set AEBS in BRIDGE mode? Can someone, please help?

I used to be connected via a DSL modem, but now, my ISP removed the modem saying is no longer needed and I am connected only to a wire.(so that means I am part of a LAN I guess) They say is fiber optic up to my block of flats. They have a box on the staircase from where multiple wires goes to apartments! I believe lies a switch in there...!All I know for sure is that I have a static IP and all these numbers I uploaded to the base station! All I have is the amber flashing light and the "nothing connected to the WAN port" msg.
I tried to set the device in bridge mode, but no luck! No Internet!When I connect directly to my mac everything is fine!
They said no problem if I want to put a wirless router in the house!Should I ask them for any specific settings?
Repeat: The Ethernet port I use is from a PCI card. The built in Ethernet is dead! Can this be a reason?

How do I use Airport Extreme to create wired access point on wireless network?

Bit of an odd situation. I just went from cable to DSL at home and the modem moved from right by my computer to upstairs.
Trouble is, there's no real easy way to get a cable from the modem upstairs to my X-box (sans wireless connector) downstairs.
I could buy the wireless adaptor for the X-Box, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend any more money.
I have my airport extreme, and I was hoping I could use it to create a wired access point on the network, recieving the signal from the wireless modem upstairs and allowing me to plug in the X-Box.
Is this possible? If so, how? I've been through the config panel about a dozen times, but can't figure out what combination to set up.

Will it work if I use the express to create the network?
Yes, providing that you have an 802.11n version of the AirPort Express and the Express has been configured to "Allow this network to be extended".
Then, the AirPort Extreme can be configured to "extend" the Express network. When you do this, the AirPort Extreme will provide more wireless coverage and the LAN Ethernet ports are enabled, so you can connect an Ethernet device.
This will not be a "normal" Ethernet connection. It will only work as well as the wireless "hop" between the Express and Extreme allow.
For best results and performance, a wired connection through the hole in the wall is always best. If you decide to do this, you will need the "new" AirPort Express with both a WAN and LAN port on the device. But, you could try wireless first to see if it will meet your goals before you reach for the tools.

How to use Airport Extreme as a wireless hub

I just switched ISPs and decided to move the location of the modem. Bought a new Airport Extreme and set it up next to the modem. I get good WiFi through out the house (30-50Mbps). However, I have a location (in the entertainment center on opposite side of the house) that needs wired connections. Running wires to this location is not an option. I thought I could repurpose an older (~5yrs) Airport Extreme for this purpose. I reset the old Airport Extreme and then set it up using the Airport Utility to "Extend" existing network. Setup goes fine but then network performance drops to almost nothing (download speeds of <1Mbps). I suspect the two routers are interfering with one another. Not sure what to do. Is there an option to wireless connect the Old Airport to the New Airport, but not extend the wireless network, while keeping the ethernet ports on the back active?

Running wires to this location is not an option.
If the area has poor wireless connection.. when you locate the airport there it will not get much signal and so will give very poor signal.
What you are asking to do.. will not help.

No, there is no such option and it would not help anyway. The problem is the location of the airport is just very poor.
What about trying Ethernet over Power adapters.. called homeplug in some areas. They do not always work but when they do, will usually work better than wireless.
Otherwise you have to do some longer cords and move the old airport nearer to the new one or into a better location.. eg up higher in the room.

You can sometimes improve things if you move the wireless link from 2.4ghz to 5ghz .. I use a similar setup and strangely discovered that although signal is better at 2.4ghz the speed is very poor.. by forcing the connection to 5ghz I actually get so much better speed.
I would also note it is extremely hard to get any useful info out of the current airport utility.. If you have a machine running older OS or even windows so you can run 5.6 utility it will show you the link speed with signal strength.. and you can use that to locate the airport in the best location.. small changes can make huge differences.. because the material it has to travel through changes.

I've started to share an internet connection with a cousin of mine that lives in my apartment building. The connection is in her apartment and as far as I can tell the wireless signal is coming from the modem she has, there is no stand alone router/ base station. So far I've just been connecting using my iBook with the aiport card in it. No problems. I just had to get the ip number and password from her and I was hooked right up.
Here's my real question:
I also have a G4 Mini with no wireless card in it at all and an Airport Extreme base station from before we started sharing a connection. In the time that we've been sharing I haven't connected to the internet at all using the Mini. Now I'm wondering if there is a way I can hook the Airport Extreme to the Mini and somehow use it as a replacement for a wireless card in the Mini. Thus using the Mini connected to the Airport to connect just the Mini to the internet.
I'm not worried about the iBook and do not wish to reconfigure the way I'm using/ connecting with it. Everything is peachy with that.
If this is possible, how can I do it?

I get my internet through an ATT DSL wireless router positioned up in my attic. I have a studio in my basement with 2 computers, a plotter, a laser printer and a fax/scanner/photo printer. I've run an ethernet cable down from the attic in to a central location in my basement. I've run ethernet cable from the three printers to that same location. I want to set up an unused Airport extreme base station in my studio to connect the plotter and two printers to my wireless network. One snag is that one of my computers has a bad airport card slot and needs to be connected to the network with an ethernet cable.
Can you help me solve this?

Got er done this weekend and I have extended the network to my studio. One problem though, My main computer keeps dropping off the wireless network. It connects for a second and then gone. I have solved this for the moment by disconnecting my scanner from the AEBS and connecting my main computer to the AEBS. I still have not connected my laser printer to the network, but will use its USB connection to connect it to the AEBS. I just need to go buy a longer cord.
Things work for now and I can work on some jobs this week. I plan to search the boards to solve the dropping off problem soon.
