How to use airport time machine

i am from germany an i dont know how i have to install the time machine

I presume you are talking about Time Capsule (TC) since this discussion area is the hardware Time Capsule.
Time Machine  (TM) is the backup software on your computer. The two are not actually related.. TC is a target backup location for TM.
Read the setup guide.
http://support.apple.com/manuals/%23airport
The airport utility is supposedly automatic now.. I never believe in automatic because there will always be 10% of cases it gets wrong at least.
Reset the TC to factory if it doesn't show up and start over.
You must be using wireless in your MBP and please remember to set ipv6 in wireless section of network preference to link-local.
Let the airport utility make the choices for you.. they are generally correct.. start with the TC plugged into your main router by ethernet.. WAN TC to LAN modem/router.
If you cannot figure out how to setup the TC after that normal routine, tell us exactly what you are using for modem router and where you get to in the setup so we can help you with manual settings.

TM does not work like that.
If you want files to use later.. do not use TM.
Or do not use TM to the same location. Plug a USB drive into the computer and use that as the target for the permanent backup.

  • How to use the time machine?

how to use the time machine? because i don't know where to find the back up. can you please help me.. thankyou.

Time machine is a backup application and service that come with Leopard. When you plug in an external drive you can use it as a backup source. All you do is select the drive in the Time Machine control panel and start the backup. It will back up your whole drive and if you lose a file, go to the location on your drive where that file should be and open the Time Machine application. From there you will be able to migrate to all the points in "time" when the file was changed, and select the version of the file that you want. Then select "restore" and the file will be restored to the location where it last was on your drive.

  • How to use airport time capsule with multiple computers?

I'm sure there are some thread about this but i couldn't find it... so sorry for that but hear me out! =)
I bought the AirPort Time Capsule to back up my MBP
    And so i did.
then i thought "let give this one a fresh start" so i erased all of it with the disk utility and re-installed the MBP from the recovery disk.
I dont want all of the stuff i backed up just a few files and some pictures so i brought that back.. so far so good.
Now i want to do a new back up of my MBP so i open time machine settings, pick the drive on the time capsule and then "Choose" i wait for the beck up to begin, and then it fails.  It says (sorry for my bad english, im swedish haha) "the mount /Volume/Data-1/StiflersMBP.sparsebundle is already in use for back up.
    this is what i want:
i want the "StiflersMBP.sparsebundle" to just be so i can get some stuf when i need them. it's never to be erased.
i want to make a new back up of my MBP as if it's a second computer...
so guys and girls, what is the easiest and best solution?
    Best regards!

  • How to use Airport Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive?

I have purchased the Airport Time Capsule 3TB but I really don't need a backup disk, so I want to use it as a wireless hard disk to be used in my network, how can I do this?  Can someone give me a clear step by step guide of how I can do this?
I appreciate your help and support.

There is no difference between using the TC as a backup or as a network disk.
    Mount the disk in finder.
Copy files to it and from it.. in exactly the same way you copy files between disks in a Mac.
As a file store the TC is not good.
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • HT201250 How to Use One Time Machine External Drive to Back Up Two Macs

How do I set up two computers -- an iMac and a MacBook, both running Mountain Lion -- to use a single external hard drive for Time Machine backups?

    Yes, it does.

  • How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to  connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac.  Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

  • Help with Use of Time Machine

    Hi All.
I am not having fun trying to recover mission critical data with Time Machine and I am wondering if I ever understood how this works.
I can only apparently go back by hitting the <- and -> arrows to "Today at 11:50 AM"??
I /can/ see the little sidebar lines go back to July 2011 but when the line gets fat clicking on it does not do anything.
I back up a 1 TB MacPro and a 250 GB MBP to a 2TB TC and I am wondering if I need to download some software - similar in ease of use to Omni Disk Sweeper - in order for me to get a handle on what is going on.
These files go back before Today at Noon and I am thinking it is a very good time for me to figure out if I actually know how to use this Time Machine/Capsule.
Thanks for any help and I have read Pondini's great stuff but if anyone can just verbally walk me through this a little I'd be greatful.
    Thanks.

By <- and -> arrows, do you mean the oblique arrows between the Time Machine Finder window the the time line on the right?  It can take a long time for Time Machine to respond to clicks on those arrorws, particularly if you're connected to your Time Capsule via Wi-Fi.  Try giving it several minutes.
If that doesn't help, check back.  There's another way to retrieve files (as opposed to things like Mail messages) from Time Machine.
In the future, since your problem involves Time Machine, a message of this sort would be better posted in the section for your Mac OS X version.
By the way, you don't seem to have declared any of your system details in your profile.  Those can help people give you correct advice.  To update that, click on "My Stuff" near the top of a window on these discussion groups, then on "Profile".  Scroll down to "My Products" and either edit an existing one or add a new one.

  • How to see all back ups on Airport Time Machine?

I have lots of backups on an external HD.
Looking for a folder/file is easy because I can see all backuped folders and files in the folder set up I have decided upon.
I would like to see all my folders and files as these have backed up on Airport Time Machine. I just want to see these folders and files like this is the case on my external HD.
They must be placed somewhere on Time Machine.
    How can I see these?
I am not really interested in going into Time Machine Backups on a date related basis, but on a folder related basis.

I am not really interested in going into Time Machine Backups on a date related basis, but on a folder related basis.
Unfortunately, Time Machine is not really interested in working this way.  Apple takes the word "Time" in Time Machine seriously.
The best that you will be able to do is navigate to find a folder that you want on your Mac
Then, open Time Machine and use the timeline to see different versions of that folder

  • Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, my library is not listed or available. How can I find it? Can I use the time machine to restore it?

Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, when I open the program, I am now asked what library i wish to use and none are listed. I can not find my photos. How can I find and restore my photos. Can I use the Time Machine to do this?

You may be launching an older version of iPhoto from your Dock. Try to launch iPhoto directly from the Applications folder. Does that find a library to open?
If not, search with Find Any File for traces of your iPhoto library, as described by Old Toad in this post:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.
If that does not work, try to restore from your backup:
The photos were stored on the iMac hard drive. I do have the Time machine with backup on my Airport WIFI.
To restore from Time Machine, you need to open the folder, where your iPhoto library should be, before you enter Time Machine. Then go back in time along the timeline to the right of the TimeTunnel window.

  • Hi, I am trying to connect a WD Mybook for Mac to my airport/time machine device.  On the AirPort Utility it listed under Disks at 0 Mb.  I enabled file sharing.  But nothing happens.  If I plug it directly into my MacBook it works fine.  How do I fix it?

I am trying to connect a WD Mybook for Mac to my airport/time machine device.  On the AirPort Utility it listed under Disks at 0 Mb.  I enabled file sharing.  And also followed all the steps - "secured disk access: with a disk passord", "Airport disk guest access: read and write", "Share disks over WAN". But nothing happens.  If I plug it directly into my MacBook it works fine.  How do I fix it?  Also, its connected via a powered usb hub.

I assume that you are using  Mac operating system 10.4.11, as your profile indicates.
The instructions that you referenced are for use with AirPort Utility....not AirPort Admin Utility.
Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Mac , which will run on 10.4.11.
Also noticed that the instructions do not tell you that the hard drive should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with the AirPort Extreme, but they should.

  • I'm running Pages version 5.2 on a Desktop Mac version 10.9.2. with the Pages app open how do I use the Time Machine to go back five hours to see the work?

I'm running Pages version 5.2 on a Desktop Mac version 10.9.2. With the Pages app open how do I use the Time Machine to go back five hours to see my page? Can I access Time Machine within an app like Pages? How do I enter Time Machine within the application? It always takes me to the Finder. I apolgise for the mumbo jumbo. I simply do not know how to use Time Machine. It makes sense when I follow the Tutorial but then I lose it.

OK. You've kind of skipped over the reason why you want to go back five hours, but my assumption would be that you've made changes to a Pages file that you want to revert.
There are two ways to tackle this. From Pages itself, open the current version of your document, and from the File menu, click Revert To, and Browse All Versions. You'll then be in the Time Machine interface for that file, and can browse back to the version you want.
Or, outside of Pages, you can select the file (or the folder it was originally in, if you've since deleted it) and enter Time Machine from the TM menu (it sounds like you've already tried this?)

  • On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

  • How can I use the Time Machine Backups from my Old Computer?

I have two months of Time Machine backups made using my old Macintosh computer which died and I no longer have. I have now purchased a new computer and am trying to use the Time Machine back ups from the original computer, but it will not recognise them. How can I get my new MacBook Pro to use the Time Machine Backups from my old Computer? I phoned the Apple help line and they said I cannot use them and would have to delete them. This sounds crazy if you can only use the Time Machine back up file with one computer and have to delete it when you buy a new Mac. Surely there must be some way to transfer ownership (not files) from an old to the new Mac?
    Thanks

Thanks Kevin for the suggestion posted on MacOSXHints how to "Repair Time Machine after logic board changes".
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It seems as though I am not alone with my frustration with the way Time Machine uses the MAC address of a computer to tell one system from another. This means that if you have your Mac repaired with a new logic board, or replace your system with a new one, you can't resume backups where you left off. Reading through the readers who used the fix using Terminal, it appears that the fix does not always work. I contacted Apple again, but they were no help. Surely Apple should come out with a solution as more and more people use Time Machine/Time Capsule.
It is CRAZY that after a change computers or a switch in the computer logic board that you cannot resume your Time Machine back ups.

  • Can I use my Time Machine as an airport to print from my Ipad?

I want to use the airprint, but my printer does not have that utility. I read in another apple support, that I could use a computer as an airport.
Can I use my Time Machine as an airport for the airprint, between my Ipad and my printer?

No. Time Machine is just backup software. If you have a networkable printer that you can connect to the computer then you could possibly print to it wirelessly via your network if you enable printer sharing in your router.
