How to Use Apple Software Update w/ ARD 2.2

There must be a way - but I haven't figured it out yet - to use ARD 2.2 to control Apple Software Update on client computers. Is it simply to take control of each computer one at a time and run Software Update? If so, that doesn't simplify things much over actually going to each computer in my lab. I'm hoping there's a more automated, streamlined way to do it. Please let me know the secret - if there is one!
Thanks!

Send the UNIX command "softwareupdate" (Send Command As root). Here's the usage:
softwareupdate <mode> [<args> ...]
-l | --list List all appropriate updates
-d | --download Download Only
-i | --install Install
<label> ... specific updates
-a | --all all appropriate updates
-r | --recommended only recommended updates
-u | --url <url> ... from signed package URLs
Per-user preferences:
--ignore <label> ... Ignore specific updates
--reset-ignored Clear all ignored updates
--schedule (on | off) Set automatic checking
-h | --help Print this help

  • Re: HP Product Support using Apple Software Updates for new OS X 10.9 Mavericks

I have a similar problem on my macbook pro. I had to call tech support for my extended warranty the last 2 times a new firmware update was released after installing. I always update from the apple updates on my laptop and am using the HPOfficeJet Pro 8600 plus. Its the best printer I ever had but there appears to be issues when using the airplay wireless connection.

    Hi @Obiwon4luke,
I not certain I understand, I did go back and read some of your older posts though to try to better understand the issue. It sounds like you are experiencing an intermittent connection with your 8600 Plus, is this correct? I see you have contacted phone support several times and have been able to get a temporary solution each time. What sorts of things have they tried? Knowing what you have done up to this point may help me identify the root cause and work towards a more permanent solution.

Taken at face value, you're having trouble with a Windows Operating System file associated with your DirectX.
Perhaps try an sfc /scannow. For instructions, see the following Microsoft document:

  • Will Apple Software Update update a 64 bit version of iTunes

On 64 bit Windows 7, will Apple Software Update update a 64 bit installation of iTunes, Bonjour, and Apple Mobile Support to a new 64 bit version of the software when a new version comes out or will it try to install pure 32 bit versions of the software when I use Apple Software Update.
Basically, is Apple Software Update smart enough to realize that the version of Windows 7 I am using is 64 bit and that I used the 64 bit package to install iTunes, Bonjour, and Apple Mobile Support, etc originally. I know that the software is not entirely 64 bit, but I would like to keep the parts that are.
    Thanks.

The answer is "yes, ASU does download the 64-bit stuff on a 64-bit PC".
I uninstalled iTunes, BonJour and Apple Mobile Device Support (all of which have at least some 64-bit componentry) on the 64-bit Vista system. Did an "iTunes + QuickTime 9.0.3" install via ASU. The 64-bit pieces were all in place after the ASU update. (AMDS program files, iTunes miniplayer stuff, iPod Service Module, 64-bit BonJour namespace provider, and so forth.)

  • Running 10.4.11 I can not find the outdated plugins that Firefox keeps telling me I need. Apple Software Update doesn't help with this

I'm running 10.4.11 and am unable to find the plugin updates that Firefox keeps telling me I need on an annoying little popup window that keeps coming up whenever I download a page using Firefox. The pluin updates I need are for Quicktime, Java  to name a few. Is Apple not supplying any more plugin update because I'm using an old version of Mac OSX? The firefox plugin page tells me that Apple supppies their own plugins but I don't see any when I use Apple Software Update. Any suggestions?

Do what others do and get TenFourFox - the equivalent of the latest Firefox but built especially for PPC: http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
    To enable plug-ins:
Put about:config in TenFourFox's address bar and hit return
Put tenfourfox.plugins in the search box and hit return
Click tenfourfox.plugins.enabled to set it to true
    Restart TenFourFox
TenFourFox will now use the Safari Flash plug-in

Okay. Rather than using Apple Software Update, let's try updating your iTunes using an installer downloaded from the following location:
    Latest iTunes Installer
Does the install using the iTunesSetup.exe from there go through any better? If not, what error message do you get from that?

  • How to push software update thru ARD

How can I push software update to the client macs thru the ARD? Please help.

    Hi
You don't really need ARD to push Apple specific Software Updates to mac clients. You could utilize the Software Update Service instead:
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/SystemImaging_and_SW_Update_Adminv10.5.pdf
More of the same from here:
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/
If by Software Updates you mean 3rd-Party applications such as Adobe's suite of products then unless they are .pkgs or .mpkgs you won't be able to. However even for these you could utilize PackageMaker:
    http://oreilly.com/pub/a/mac/2003/09/16/packagemaker.html?page=last&x-maxdepth=0
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=91068
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Porting/Conceptual/PortingUnix/distribu ting/chapter9_section_3.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40002855-TPXREF102
and build a .pkg for non-pkg applications and push those out using ARD. Another way of doing this is via the command line man softwareupdate - which can be also be done using ARD.

  • How can I delete old Apple Software Updates from 10.6 server?

    Hi guys!!
First of all, please, excuse my english......i know it's the worst possible and will try to develop it.
    My question is the following.
The hard disk of my xServe is almost full and I need to delete the old Apple Software Udates that it contains (some of them are from 2005!!)
And I don´t know how to make it!!
I`ve uncheck the "automatically enable copied updates" option in Server Admin and I´ve check-in the "Purge unused/legacy software", but i don´t know how to delete the oldest Apple Software Updates because I don´t know where the **** are they!!
    Thank's in advance from Spain.
Any help will be very wellcome
    J.

    You could try what
s in <http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9289958#9289958>, or, as this is a new setup which isn't in use, you could just nuke the system and reinstall and this time use the correct DNS name.

  • Im trying to download the newest version of itunes but it keeps saying "The older version of apple software update cannot be removed." and wont let me finish the download, how can I fix this?

It keeps doing it over and over again, how can I fix this?

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

App. store is not installed, how do I do it for each other?
I have my apple software update.
App.store app but after my update is not in the dock and system.

    Hi Kees ...
Your profile indicates you are running Leopard v10.5.8
You need to upgrade to Snow Leopard V10.6 in order to use the App Store. This is an "upgrade", not an "update".
Make sure your Mac meets Snow Leopard's requirements here.
You must have the minimum of v10.6.6 installed in order to access the App Store.
You can purchase Snow Leopard here > Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store

In My Programs, I have a folder called Apple Software Updater, to which I can browse, but within which I cannot trigger any action.
