How to use iChat on the same home network?

If two people have iChat on their laptops and happen to be in the same house on the same router, do you need to set up some sort of account to use iChat to see and talk to each other or can they do it with whatever is already on their macs?
If they do need some sort of third party account, what's the easiest method to use?

Hi,
You do not "Need" any other Screen Name or other utility or app.
The Start Up Screens if you have not done that bit yet will prompt you for an AIM or Apple ID (Screen Name) in the Second Screen. It will also prefill your Name from the Address Book Info held at the My Card.
You can click through this Screen. The Next will ask you about setting up Jabber/Googletalk but you can click through that as well.
There is a Screen that allows you to Enable Bonjour as well. Tick the Box as this is what you will be using.
There follows a Video preview and the option to take a Pic as your Buddy pic.
Then a Screen with the Done Button.
This should then open iChat proper with just one Buddy List titled Bonjour.
It will use your name as in the Address Book as your Buddy name (this is what the other computers will see.
Alternatively you can click through all the start Up Screens then go the the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts and Enable the Bonjour listing in the Account Info tab > "Enable Bonjour" tick box
Double Clicking a Buddy's Line in the Buddy list will start a Text Chat
If they are showing a Camera icon, double clicking the icon will start a Video chat.
There are variations using the icons at the bottom of the Buddy List or the Buddies menu (even Right Clicking on a Buddy)

  • Is it possible to use several Apple TV in the same home network?

I´ve got the latest Apple TV (ver 2) and I´m impressed of it´s Airplay function. Is it possible to install an Apple TV in several different rooms of your home, each connected to a separate sound- and/or TV system of that room for playing the same or different music- or picture source from for example an iPhone, iPad or MacBookPro at the same time wireless in each room? Does your home network and Airplay system identify each connected Apple TV as an unique entity?

Yes, multiple Apple TV's in the same home work well (assuming your home network has enough bandwidth), you will need to give each one it's own name for identification (we have 6 Apple TV's here-3 new ones and 3 older versions)

  • Can I share Apps between Macs on the same Home Network?

I tried to do this today by trying to import an App that my wife bought for her Mac. the system went as far as importing the app, but then when I went to try and open it the machine told me that I didn't have the authorization permissions to use the app on my machine.
what I'm wondering is whether that message has to do with the security settings on our network or computers or whether it is coming from the Mac App Store itself. Does anybody know? Is it possible, in the first place, to share Mac Store apps between computers with different user IDs on the same homw network?

Funny thing was I did all that before trying to 'share' said app. That was why I was befuddled by the error message. I'm still not sure why I got it. Second time thru I added the Mac App Store to 'allowing incomming connections' under security preferences, then tried it again and it worked fine. I'm not convinced though that that had anything to do with why it worked on the second go round. I like to understand why these things work and why they sometimes don't, so I'm still a little mystified. But..... now it works. I installed Keynote, Pages, and a whole host of other apps off of my wife's Mac App Store page on my Mac with no hiccup at all. *Big Smile*
    Thanks for the reference article.

  • How can I resolve an issue where webpages take several minutes to download? Other computers working on the same home network take not time at all.

Firefox would not load webpage despite there being an active internet connection to the computer. I know this because firefox loaded on another home computer without any issues. I reset the ip address on the computer in question through cmd.exe and this helped the issue to an extent however it take several minutes to load webpages. I can also advise tha Internet Explorer suffered exactly the same issue and it gave me an error message early when unable to load webpages, that a remote firewall may be blocking the connection. It suggested to configure the firewall to allow connections thru TCP port 80.

    Hello ,
Can you please post your ADSL stats by following this direct link; http://192.168.1.254/index.cgi?active_page=9116 << it only works if you have a Home Hub 2.0+ and remember to type your password in.
Also we need a speedtest Use this link http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9354/c/346,4740,5520 as it will also help you diagnose and give you a list of solutions afterwards, it does incorporate the http://www.speedtester.bt.com one though as well.
It sounds to me that you have a low profile, with your stats we can see if you've been having disconnections which makes the exchange raise your Noise Margin to try and increase your stabibility, but at a cost of speed, it may have been that your sync speed has recovereed, but not your IP Profile.
Here are some helpful (I actually did find them helpful!) tips from BT: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/35079 up to you whether you want to read those tips, because I did actually find them helpful.
Can you comfirm that you have no noise on the line.  Really a test by dialling 17070 and pressing option 2 for the quiet line test should be completed in the Master Socket with no other devices connected to the line.  ANd also do you have a master socket with a split faceplate that you can unscrew the bottom half, if so behind there is a hidden 'test socket', it disconnects all your internal wiring so just to make sure its not a fault inside your premises.
    Regards Edd

  • I need to access my library on my new computer. My wife has her own itunes account, but we are on the same home network. I do not want her music and vice a versa. Will this happen using icloud??

can you pick what computer shares icloud or is it the entire network??

    From Here   http://support.apple.com/kb/HE37
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
You will not be able to Transfer anything from your Apple ID to her New Apple ID.
Anything Purchased / Downloaded using Your Apple ID remains Tied to your Apple ID.

  • HT3819 Why can't we transfer songs between computers on the same home network? None of the threads on the support page have worked!

My shared account will not allow me to transfer a song my wife purchased on our account. Yet every song that I purchased on our account from my computer transferred to her computer with no problem.

Why can't you move the files?  What happens when you try?

  • Two user accounts using the same home folder

This may sound like a silly or goofy question, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to use two different user accounts, but with each using the same home folder?
I was wondering because there are many different settings I would like to use for different settings. Kind of like a "Spaces on Steroids." When I'm at school, I'd like to use one Network Settings, one desktop and icons, one Dock, etc. And when at home, a different set of each, but still using the same home folder.
Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

    ZooCrewMan wrote:
So, I figured the easiest was would be seperate user accounts, "Home" "School" "Work" etc., and all have different settings, but still point to the same Home Folder.
The problem is, most of those settings are kept in the home folder.
You could probably do what Softwater suggests, with an AppleScript, or perhaps an Automator workflow, but it's not without some serious downsides.  You'd need one for each setup.
At least one complication would be, any change you wanted to make to each setup would have to be done to that script; you couldn't just drag something into (or out of) the Dock.
Another theoretical possiblility would be to have separate user accounts, but use the special Shared user folder for your data.  You'd have to select it as a souce or destination for each app you use, but many will remember that from use to use.
The complication would be permissions.  When you save a document there, the user that saved it is the owner, with read & write rights.  All other users have read-only rights, so could view and open them, but not update them.  You'd probably want to create one or more sub-folders in the Shared account (for various types of files), and you could probably set a Folder Action on each to grant read & write permissions to anything created in them.
Then you could set up the desired network location, Dock, and Desktop for each user account.

  • How can 2 people use itunes in the same household? we both have iphone 4 and separate id but the same itunes? pleasehelp

how can two people use itunes in the same household? i had a iphone before so alreday had an itunes account now me and my husband have upgraded and we now both have them. he has set up a username and i have mine yet when he logs in he seems to just get my account? please help

Decide which iPhone will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the one that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else save these to your camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.  If you are syncing Notes with iCloud, you'll also have to email your notes to yourself so they can be recreated in the new account as they cannot be migrated.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iPhone.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to un-merge the data you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa).

  • I'm a school tech coordinator. Many computers and many iPads. How many Apple IDs can I have per device, and how many devices can have the same Apple ID? To make my life easier, I'd like 200 devices to all use the same Apple ID.

I'm a school tech coordinator. I have many computers and many iPads. I apologize if there is a some place that has all the rules governing the use of Apple IDs. I looked, and I even tried to get the answers from multiple Apple rep's. I couldn't find the answers.
How many Apple IDs can I have per device?
I want to use the same computer to sync and backup many iOS devices. The iOS devices would be associated with different Apple IDs.
I may load apps under a school Apple ID and have users load their own apps under thier own ID.
How many devices can have the same Apple ID?
Can I use the same Apple ID on all the computers in a lab?
Can I use the same Apple ID on all iPads for a particular grade level?
Are the rules different for iOS devices and computers?
I know that there are limits on "authorize" and "de-authorize" and how frequently those things can be done.
Recently I heard that for the life of an iOS device, it can only be associated with five Apple IDs. That is not good for a school giving iPads to students in a 1:1
To make my life easier, I'd like 200 devices to all use the same Apple ID.

Would it be possible for me to download iTunes in Parallels and get the files into that and then onto my iPod?
Yes, you can download iTunes for Windows using Parallels. If planning on making purchases here and/or authorizing already purchased tracks (from your Mac iTunes library), you are permitted to authorize five (5) computers as per iTunes Store terms of use, regardless of computing platform. No need to create a separate new iTunes Store account.
However, judging from what you would like to do, your best bet would be to convert the WMAs to AAC/MP3 in iTunes-Windows (iTunes-Mac cannot import WMA files), and drag the files from the Parallels window to your desktop to add to the iTunes-Mac library. (as the iPod itself is currently linked to your iTunes-Mac library)
    Hope this helps,
    Steve

  • HT5177 How can two people edit the same FCPX file? One company, so both people/computers share the same license. Example: I work on revision A and my boss takes it and makes revision B and gives it back to me using two separate computers.

Have the project, events and media on one drive which is common to both macs.
You can download FCP X to both macs using the same Apple ID that it was purchased with.

  • HT3819 Hi there. If I use "home sharing" on the same wifi network, does it use internet data, or only sharing over a home network?

Hi there. If I use itunes over home sharing in my house on 2 pc's, does it use data from my internet, or does it work over local home network?

You'd need both computers to be connecting to the same wifi network in order to Home Share.

  • How does one use Sound sticks while using HDMI at the same time ??

How does one use Soundsticks while using HDMI at the same time ??

    Hi Caleb,
This isn't a precise answer but a possible workable solution. SoundSource puts a menu extra which allows you to switch input/output and has an option for Auto-Switch to Headphones. The auto-switch feature doesn't work with USB headphones but I believe it will with 'regular' headphone plugs such as you use.
