  • Where can i find a tutorial on how to use iMovie 2013 version?

I've been making some clips anywhere from 6 seconds to 15 seconds long, and I just wanted if there are any good links on how to use iMovie 2013 version. I've looked on youtube but everything on their are old clips or small clips on how to run the program. I'm not an advanced user but i've picked up some of the basics on iMovie. I just want to learn the basics and advance onto the harder setups with iMovie. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can anyone point me toward a tutorial/video/anything that will show me how to use iMovie '11?

The Apple video tutorial was just a commercial. Other info I found on Apple site was for the iPad. I have a MacBook Pro. I need to learn how to use iMovie '11 from the start. Very start. To borrow a line from a movie 'Talk to me like I'm a 5-year-old.' For example, what is the difference between a 'project' and an 'event'? Which one do I create first?  How do I adjust the exposure and color on my movies? Once I am done with my movie how do I tell computer/software to 'save' it because I am done. Then where is it? These are just examples.
I'd love to find any basic tutorial/video/help.
I got a book but it's way too advanced.
    Thank you.

  • How to use iMovie 08 imported footage on another computer in iMovie 09?

I had to import quite a lot of video from tape and had only firewire 400 cable so did it on a Mac running iMovie 08.
Now, how can I move the imported data to another computer using iMovie 09?
When I open iMovie 09, I can see the disk on the other computer (over the LAN) but how can I get iMovie 09 to recognise and use the data that iMovie 08 has imported?

You can use these files, but the first time you open them in iMovie 09, they will be upgraded so they will no longer work in iMOvie 08. New cache and thumbnails files will be created.
It is probably not working now because, for performance reasons, iMovie 09 will not work with a network drive. There are workarounds involving symbolic links. But you still have to deal with the performance issue.
So, do you want these files to still work in iMovie 08?
    *If no...*
Simple drag and drop these Event Folders to a locally attached external drive that is formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled). They should be placed in a folder called iMovie Events at the top level of the drive. Attach this drive to the computer with iMovie 09, and start iMovie 09.
Note: You could also move these files to your internal hard drive if you have plenty of room. In this case, they go in the Movies/iMovie Events folder.
    *if yes..*.
Attach a properly formatted external drive to the computer with iMovie 08. In the finder, copy (not move) the Event folders to folder named "iMovie Events" at the top level of the drive.
Also, if you have created projects from your imported footage (the events), and you want to port your projects to iMovie 09, it gets a little more complicated. Let me know.

  • How to use iMovie plugins?

I have recently started working with iMovie, and would like to use a special effects plugin to add "magic effects". I followed instructions to add the plugin i downloaded to the Plugin folder for iMovie, but how do i edit with the effects? I have a MacBook Air latest version and I would like to use the plugin in iMovie, because it is supposed to be comparable- and yes it works with the version I have. • How to use iMovie HD in Yosemite!

Thanks to Ziatron for discovering this.
One goes to the crossed out iMovie HD application, right click on it, open package contents, then macos, then right click on iMovie HD which opens in terminal. No worries, just leave the terminal window open, and use IMovie HD as you usually do.
It works. I put a mp4 into it from my panasonic fZ1000, and then exported a video to my desktop. Might be things that are a little wonky, but at least the application works.
Just remember to not close the terminal window until you are done with HD
I clicked on everything I could, and played with the code, but missed this solution.

Thanks to Ziatron for discovering this.
The credit really goes to the man below.
    jboolean
Find iMovie HD.app, control click on it and View Package Contents. Open Contents/MacOS/iMovie HD. That seems to bypass the check.
There are more details on this procedure below.
You can use iMovie HD for a bit longer...

  • How to use iMovie 08 with Drobo FS?  Drobo shows up in the Events Library but with the yellow triangle.

I have an iMac and a Drobo FS.  The iMac can access the Drobo FS but iMovie does not allow me to select it as a storage location.  The Drobo shows up in the Events Library but with the yellow triangle.  I am running iMovie 08.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

As far as I know you cannot use a Drobo FS with iMovie.
For iMovie events the storage drive needs to be formatted as "Mac OSX Extended - Journaled" this is the HFS+ file system.
The Drobo FS uses the EXT3 file system, and it cannot be changed.
Very annoyingly this means that iMovie can only be used with a drive that is using the HFS+ file system.
I have a Drobo FS that I use with both PC's and Macs - and I love it. Sadly I cannot use iMovie with it. So I purchased a seperate Hard Drive - A G-Tech 3 Tb - and this works fine with iMovie.
As far as I know the FS Drobo's are the only ones that cannot be formatted to HFS+.
I don't know why Apple designed iMovie like this, but I find it very frustrating.
If you want extra storage for iMovie, you will need to purchase a drive that can be HFS+ formatted.
Here is a link to the Drobo site with the various file systems that they support:

  • How to use iMovie with Aperture Library from an external drive?

    Hey,
    Some problems:
    1. My first video, I stored the project on my own laptop and used the library from the HD. This seems to give some problems, but I now figured out I have to consolidate the media etc. so now my files don't get missing after unplugging the harddrive. I figured it would be a better idea to make all new projects on the HD, so I have everything in place all the time. BUT. look at the picture: there seems to be something wrong with the way iMovie recognizes the aperture library: i'ts not listed in the events library under the HardDisk (named Passport) but under my own drive... ??? (+ I don't understand the idea of events when I have my aperture library: Do I need to make events for all projects I make? how is this possible when the library is not in the correct position?)
    2. I made a movie, but I'm unable to export a large/high quality version of this project. That's why I want to move my project to the HD and then open it on my partners Mac Book Pro to make a good export. Unfortunately, his macbook doesn't recognize the files and the files can't be opened in iMovie... (files stay gray and unclickable)
    To sum it all up:
I want the best way to work with this set-up: mac book air, external drive with all my files and iMovie.  And I want to be able to open the project on a different computer to make high quality exports.

First thing that comes up with videos in your 'picture' library is the videos are always under the full control of the picture library program. Which means Aperture is the keeper and master, and it decides what will be displayed in iMovie's Event Library. If Aperture is having difficulties sometimes it cannot or will not display the videos you are storing there.
Right now, I think the problem is your Aperture Library is on the internal Mac HD, not the external. You would have to move Aperture's Library to the external HD (along with all the pictures and videos). Then try to add the videos back into a project.
In extreme cases I have recommended moving the videos out of the picture library and re-importing them into iMovie Event folders to let iMovie manage it.

  • How to use iMovie HD with iMovie 08

    Ok silly question....
What is the purpose of iMovie HD if I already have iMovie 08?
    Can I use them together?
    If so, how?
    Thanks!

If you look at each programme, you will see they are very different. iMovie 08 is in no way an "upgrade" to iMovie HD6, I think you meant to say.
iMovie HD6 offers greater editing features with a more "pro" style timeline editing format which is superior to iMovie 08, in the eyes of a great many iMovie faithful. If you are a You Tuber, you will find 08 is designed to let you do quick, little movies. Apple was filling a new niche when they created 08, but realized that HD6 was still very popular, so they continue to offer it to purchasers of iLife 08. They can be used together.

  • How to use iMovie with an External Hard DIsk

This seems to be a common question for the obvious reason that Movie folders rapidly become too large for the main HD, especially on a laptop, or if you want to use the same Movies folder on two Macs (eg iMac and MBP). Searching Apple Support and the forum comes up with some rather complicated answers. I think I have found a very simple one, which seems to work. So I'm posting this as an answer rather than a question, but any comments/problems humbly accepted.
Copy your movies folder from your home folder to the external drive (and preferably, for back-up reasons, to another drive too), then delete the movies folder in your home folder.
Make an alias of the new Movies folder, and copy it back to your home folder. If you were now to try to open iMovie, it wouldn't work, so now comes the important bit that I discovered by trial and error. Quit iMovie (if open), and rename the alias from "Movies alias" to just "Movies". Re-open iMovie, and bingo, all your events and projects appear!
I've tried it and created a new project and it all seems to work.
One word of caution - if you are relying on Time Machine as your sole backup, I don't think TM will automatically back up the contents of the aliased folder, so you need to set it up to do so, or make other arrangements for backing up.
    Is it really this easy?

You can use an external by creating the exact folders called "iMovie Events" and "iMovie Projects". They must be on the top directory ( ie, WD500/iMovie Events/) in order for iMovie to find them.
Be warned. I believe Time Machine is messing with the source path names. If you use Time Machine, it may cause you to lose linkage to source clips.

  • How to use iMovie files in Powerpoint on PC

I have iMovie 11 and have created a movie that I would like to insert it into Powerpoint running on a PC (PP 2003 SP3).  I assume I need to do a file conversion but would like advice on the best way to do this.
    Thanks,
    Rick

Quicktime isn't generally supported on the PC's we're using so I tried the MPEG and h.264 option but PPT wouldn't insert the file with a statement "Powerpoint cannot insert a movie from the selected file."
I did finally get a version inserted using the AVI format but the quality isn't as good as it is in the original but I suppose that's something I'll have to live with.
    Thanks for your advice.

  • How to Use iMovie Projects in Final Cut Express

I just upgraded to Final Cut Express because of the feature of being able to start a project in iMovie and then finish it in FCE. The steps look simple in the manual File / Open / etc. But when I do it, it tells me File Error: Wrong Type. Is there something I am doing wrong or some other format for the iMovie projects to make them work?

FCE 4.0.1 is the current version of FCE. There is nothing newer.
A new version of Final Cut Studio was released last year; perhaps it can import iMovie11 projects. You would have to try it to find out. If there is an Apple store nearby, copy your Movies folder to a portable hard drive, take it with you, and ask to try it out with Final Cut Pro on one of the Macs in the store. Most stores will let you do this.
Be aware, however, that even if the import works, there are many limitations: Transitions become cross-dissolves. Cropping, Ken Burns effects, color adjustments, titles, green screen clips, PiP clips, voiceovers, sound effects & music tracks are not exported in the XML file.
