How to Use iPhone 3G as iTouch?

I upgraded to the 3GS and very happy with it. Now, not wanting to throw away the ol 3G, I would like to use my old 3G as an iTouch... Don't need the ATT phone service, just the wifi.
But the last time I sync'd the old 3G with the PC, it shut down, and it demanded I install a sim card. What do I do?

There is zero need for that. An old iPhone with valid sim card in it but unactivated (no contract) is perfectly fine to use an old iPhone as a Touch. My daughter is using my old one like this as I type. If I had the link, there is even a support document posted about this from Apple.
There is no magic to it (as long as you didn't mess with the SIM cards with your new and old phone as there was no need to).

I'm from the US, and there has been no alternative because Apple doesn't want people to be able to tether on the iPhone just yet. Apparently they will be releasing tethering to iPhone users here soon, but Apple took Netshare down because of that fact.
Now I don't know if there is anything else available in Paris, but you might want to contact Apple or your cell carrier and ask them, they would have a better idea about it.

Then when in India, I know there are no MicroSIM available so I need to use a simcutter - would that work? Which carrier is the best to go with? Pre-Paid? How much should I spend (Europe or India)? Is that all? Will data work? Please advise. Thank you for your help and time!

Well first we cannot help you with jailbreaking options as that topic is against the TOS of this site.
Think it would just be easier to get a Pay as You go phone when you get there and use iPhone in WiFi only mode. Can usually find one right at the airport after landing.

When my AT&T contract expires (June 2009) can I just use my iPhone like an iTouch? I have another cell phone so I would like to use the iPhone just as a WiFi internet surfer, etc.

Unless you cancel your contract, the standard ATT contract goes to a month to month contract. An iPhone without service can be used as a wifi device and iPod. Applying updates will disable all features of the phone until it is reactivated.

Hello, I was wondering if there's any app/workaround on how to make iPhone act like a regular USB Flash Disk... just like Blackberry which allows itself as Data Storage...
It would be very useful as I often need to transfer my photos on iPhone to my photo printer (Fuji/Adorama etc) in town. Or is there any other convenient way because the photo printer guys are ONLY so used to USB transfer or through Bluetooth when dealing with other customers.

Using an external drive is one option. What did you use to backup the important data on your Windows PC?
Maintaining a backup is important regardless the platform but even more important with Windoze due to constant virus, adware, and spyware concerns.
An Apple store can help you with this along with helping you with backup options for your Mac.

I received a new iPhone 3G S 8GB from a friend in US. The problem is the phone is configured with A T & T. I have recharged the battery upon receving it but it failed to display the phone menu. It only displays emergency call and the iTunes and USB cable sign on the screen. I have inserted a new sim it also does not change. It displays the IMEI number and th ICCID number when pressing the 'i' sign. After removing the sim it says 'No Sim Card Installed, Insert a valid SIM with no Pin lock to activate iPhone. How to use iPhone USB tethering / Personal Hotspot without iTunes

I have a corporate laptop so didn't want to install the whole of iTunes to enable USB tethering / Personal Hotspot.
Here's how you can enable USB tethering / Personal Hotspot without installing iTunes.
1. Download iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
2. Extract the contents of the downloaded file using winRAR or 7zip. In particular you want the following files:
For 32 bit systems:
- AppleApplicationSupport.msi
- AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi
For 64 bit systems:
- AppleApplicationSupport64.msi
- AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi
Note: If you don't have either winRAR or 7zip you can do the following instead:
Start the iTunes installation, then on reaching the first screen, the required files will be extracted to your machine, perform a search for one of the files above on your C drive whilst the iTunes installation window is open, it should find them in a temp folder somewhere, you can then copy and paste them somewhere and close the iTunes installation.
3. Before continuing, ensure your iphone is not connected to the computer. Then, install AppleApplicationSupport.msi (or AppleApplicationSupport64.msi for 64 bit machine)
4. Install AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDevice6464.msi)
5. Restart your computer
6. After your computer has restarted, enable Personal Hotspot on your iPhone (select USB only option) and plug in your iPhone using the USB cable. Some device drivers will install and then your computer should automatically connect to the iPhone internet connection.
