How to use iPhone 5 earbuds with MacBook Air 13"

As far as I know it is possible to use the latest iPhone 5 earbuds for not only audio output, but also as a microphone, if the usage concerns the actual phone. I want to use it for my MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012, but they do not seem to work. I have checked the System Preferences > Sound > Input and the Input level only rises, if I actually click on the center of the earbud controls. Afterwards, while holding or releasing, the Input level goes down again and there is no input at all.
I am not keen on other people listening to my conversations (apart from my voice, which is inevitable), hence I am trying to get this to work, but I haven't found any solution.

I got the splitter, (see link below), but the mic does not seem to work. Apparently, there's a difference between a mic port and a line-in port. Mic ports are powered by the computer, line-in ports are not. They expect a powered signal to come from the input device. The iMac has a line-in port.
I downloaded an app called Line-in that is supposed to give back the ability to use unpowered mics with Macs that lost the abiliy after a system update. It did not work for me. I guess my iMac never had the ability to use unpowered mics.
So I ordered the USB Stereo Audio Adapter below. It's basically a sound card that plugs into a USB port and will work with an unpowered mic. It has not arrived yet. I'll let you know how it goes.

I cannot charge my iphone 5 with a macbook air over USB lightning cable. The macbook air says that too much current is drawn and the USB is shut down.
Is there any way to get the iphone charged at macbook air?

I tried both ports with no success. The MacBook Air is connected to the power supply and 100% full.

Can I use iphone earbuds with a mac pro tower? And with an extension cord?

I also need to use an extension cable because of my standing desk (tower is on the floor). I get confused with the 2-band jack, the 3-band jack, etc. I haven't been successful using a regular, radio shack type of headphone extension cord. Salesmen give me a blank stare when I try to explain that I have iphone earbuds with a 3-band jack and that it doesn't work with a regular extension cord. It's like I'm speaking Swahili.

You can't using 4-band iPhone earphone with Mac Pro.
You need to get 3-band earphone and extension cable.

I found it! ;-) On the Mac it is Messages and is an app. Go to the app page, scroll dwoun until you find Messages, click it and follow directions.

This is called tethering and is not currently supported.
AT&T has indicated they may support tethering with the iPhone sometime this year and if so, probably sometime after firmware update 3.0 is released this summer. Hi, I just bought a my first Mac ever, it the brand new MacBook 13" and so far I'm loving the whole Mac experience. I have a question though. However, with the iPhone I don't want to lose the contacts and the saved SMSs. Can anyone tell me how to sync the iPhone to my Mac easily without losing anything? btw, I have no songs in the iPhone, just one free app (midomi). I heard that I can automatically get the app in any other computer as long as I use the same iTunes account so the server remembers that I "bought" it.

Nah, just sync it with the Windows machine before you begin. Odds on you won't need it, but if you do, then at least it is there.
