How to use iPhone, iPod, and single iTunes library

I have an iPhone, iPod and a single iTunes library. I wish to be able to plug either of them into the computer and take individual songs out of the library to play on each. How can this be achieved?

Create playlists for each iPod and sync only the playlists you want on each iPod.
Select the iPod in iTunes.
Clkick the Music tab across the top.
Tick *Sync music* then select *Selected playlists* in the drop down and tick the playlists you want on that iPod.
Do the same for the other.

  • How to use iphone 3gs to transfer itunes library to mac

I bought a macbook pro and i am trying to transfer my itunes library from a HP dv7 using my iphone 3gs. itunes version 10.2. the instructions that I am using are for ipod. cant find instructions for using iphone. thanks

Using an external drive is one option. What did you use to backup the important data on your Windows PC?
Maintaining a backup is important regardless the platform but even more important with Windoze due to constant virus, adware, and spyware concerns.
An Apple store can help you with this along with helping you with backup options for your Mac.

  • Help please i cant figure out how to use 2 ipods on one itunes library

ive just got a ipod mini and i already have a 20 gig ipod and i just want to put music on the mini from my itunes library already on my computer, so i looked at the info on this site and it makes no sense to me now my computer wont work for either ipod when i plug it in it says theres no ipod connected what did i do. also when i plug them in it says that there is a user already usin itunes and to have them log out but how do you log out ot itunes. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

iTunes can only be run in one Windows User account at a time. So yuo can disable fast user switching (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93395)
In order for your iPod Mini to be detected you will need to first update the software if it has yet to be done (http://apple.com/ipod/download). Once this is installed follow this article to restore your iPod (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983).
This should allow your iPod Mini to communicate with iTunes. Since the iPods arrive Mac compatible. If you plug your iPods in and neither say Do Not Disconnect simply reset the iPod holding Menu+Select.

    You can't do that.
And before you decide to store any music that you own on a computer at work, talk to your IT department. Many organizations do not permit it for legal reasons. Standard policies are that anything stored on company owned computers is the property of the company. It could not be legally stored on their machines unless you transfer the licenses and all copies, physical and digital, to the company, meaning you no longer own the music. If they were to be audited and could not prove that they own the music, they would be subject to copyright violation penalties. Just use your iPod when you're at the office if you want to listen to music.

  • HT1386 My ipod and my itunes library are significantly different with the itunes library being smaller.  If I say "synch", is my ipod going to look like my library ( which I do not want)

For some reason my IPOD and my Itunes account appear to be greatly out of synch.  However I am afraid to lose everything on my IPOD.  Should I synch?

Use the manual method of syncing. You then only sync the iTunes you check to sync to your iPod. For how see the manual method here:

  • How to sync iPhone to a different iTunes library without losing content on phone

I've been using iTunes on my Macbook Air mostly for podcasts, which I periodically clean up to conserve disk space. I had a separate iTunes library on an iMac that holds my complete music collection. My iPhone is synced to the library on the Macbook Air. I just recently purchased an external hard drive and moved my whole iTunes library to it, combined with the few albums that I imported from the MacAir library, where the whole shebang is now available via Airport Extreme to both the iMac and Macbook Air, i.e., both computers can now access the same complete iTunes library, and the podcast-only library has been deleted from the Air. But now my phone won't sync to the library on the external drive. I'm not getting the "Sync and Erase" message that I've read about, but I can't drag content onto my phone, either. How do I get the phone to recognize this new library, and will I have to erase all of the music on the phone to do it?

It would be cleaner to simply sync the phone with the new library.  You can manually add music to the phone but you will perpetually be having the problem you cannot do a proper sync.

  • Use iPhone 4 to play iTunes library from an external hard drive without computer

    Hello all-
I use iTunes for playback of my music library.  My library is too large to be stored locally on my MBP so I use an external hard drive.  I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to use / setup an iPhone 4 to be able to read the iTunes library files and access the music stored on the external hard disc for playback WITHOUT the use of my MBP or any other computer.  I may be asking too much but essentially it is just code that is written into iTunes that allows this to happen, between computer and external hard drive as well as iPod and it's hard disk.  Of course I would need to be able to connect my iPhone to the external hard drive.  I figure the dock to usb cable would suffice.
    Any help is appreciated!

thanks for the quick reply!  I was hoping to not only access the individual files, but use an actual user interface that could read the iTunes library files that I already have created via iTunes on my MBP, and provide me with an iTunes like playback experience, similar to how the Remote app works or the iPod app.  Thanks though, I might use NetPortal for other applications though.

  • How do 2 iphones share the same itunes library?

My partner & I initially had 1 ipod classic for home use with a massive library. We then had 2 smaller ipods for car & travel etc. So we have 1 apple ID where we both purchase music & just share it.
I then bought an iphone & happily used it. My partner then recently got an iphone. Now, some texts & photos get shared on both phones ( as we use the same apple ID) & they both get filled up with data as they share everything.
What is the easiest way of seperating them. If we now get another ID presumably we wont be able to share the itunes library we've built up (ie 30 years worth of Cds & last 6 years of downloads) and don't want to copy it.
V confused. Dont want to lose individual photos or numbers & we are v low tech!

  • Using Multiple iPods on Same iTunes Library

I'm using iTunes 5.0 with one library that I use to manually sync two iPods to. One iPod is a 40gb photo, and the other is 1st Gen. iPod (10gb)model. Not sure what is going on, but at for the longest time I was able to connect each iPod and manually sync to the library. I can now hook up my 40gb photo ipod and sync it, but when I hook up the 1st Gen. ipod, and try and drag and drop purchased music (from iTunes), it won't allow me to transfer the music. I've made sure the firmware is up to date. I'm running iTunes on my Windows pc running XP Home. Thanks for any help!

I just ran iPod updater and it's showing firmware version 1.4 (and that it's up to date). Is there a new updater with a more recent firmware version?

  • Can I use my iPod to restore iTunes library?

The hard drive on my MacBook Pro recently "died" and I am unable to recover any files from it. I had a new hard drive installed and want to know if there s there any way to use my iPod, which has all of my music and photos on it, to restore my iTunes library?
I am afraid to connect my iPod to my computer now, in case all of the files on my iPod disappear. Any instructions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Using iphone 3GS to transfer itunes library from old computer to new comp.

I am following all instructions provided at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329 but when I attempt to drag the itunes library into my iphone (which is listed under my computer) I am not able to. I have double checked and my itunes is set to "manually manage music". Is there another way to set my iphone so that it will accept the library folder? (I have already freed up enough space on my iphone to put my entire library).

I was actually in the apple store about 3 hours ago and the guy there confirmed that it is possible to do.
Possible, yes... but that doesn't mean it is the ideal way of doing it.
    vanessabowker wrote:
The iphone is capable of being used as a disc to move your library.
Sorry, no the iPhone is not capable of being used as a disk, it does not support disk mode.
You can sync all of your media to the iPhone, then using 3rd party software extract the media from your iPhone to the new computer. That will work, but it realistically does not make sense.
Either use a USB external drive to move your iTunes library or set up both computers on your network and transfer the iTunes library via the network.
Why do you want to make this more complicated and involved than it has to be?

  • How to use external hard drive as itunes library

Just bought a new external hard drive (passport) for mac and would like to know how to use it as my itunes library? thanks

Drag it there from the Music item of the Finder's sidebar, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and navigate to that instance of the library.

I have recently restored my Windows laptop to factory settings in a successful attempt to speed it up but this resulted in my laptop login account being deleted as well as my iTunes library that was linked with it so since I couldnt use that account I decided to make a new iTunes library on my new laptop login then when I tried to get the songs on my iPod on to my iTunes library I lost all of the songs on my iPod so I no longer have any of my songs anywhere that I can see but when I tried to redownload my songs from the iTunes store it just says purchased next to every album/song so I can't redownload anything so the only way that I can think of to retrieve them is downloading them from , it there anyway that I can retrieve my songs?

  • How to use 2 ipods on 1 itunes?

A question asked many times me thinks, but I have to ask. How do I go about having 2 ipods (1 touch and 1 5th gen) with different music/vids on them on 1 itunes?
If I connect my 5th gen to the mac I dont want all the stuff that is on my touch, I want some kind of different library, reason is because my touch is only 8 gig and my 5th gen is 30 gig and vice versa, I dont want itunes trying to cram 25 gig of music onto my touch.
