How to use iPod as a DICTATION MACHINE?

I am about to purchase an Ipod, probably the 80 GB, and would like to know how I can use an iPod as a dictating machine, with the ability to start, stop, fast forward and fast rewind. Is there hardwware and software to that effect? Thank you very much for any help you can give me.
Peter Aldin.

Thank you very much for your interest.
I would like to use the ipod to listen to music. I would also like to use it as a dictating machine such as a dictaphone. This would entail the use of a microphone which can can start and stop, at which point the recording process would start or stop. It would also entail the ability to fast forward and rewind the dictation, as one would fast forward or rewind a tape.
Thank you again,
Peter Aldin ([email protected] if you prefer to email).

  • How to use ipod w/ more than one computer

I am new to ipod. I set it up on my laptop, and have all uploaded my cds to my ipod from there. I do nat have internet at home, so tried using my parents computer. How do you use the ipod with another computer that doesn't have all your songs on it? When I go to sync it, it ask if i want to delete all my ipod songa and replace with the ones on the other computer. I am trying to get album artwork. What am I not doing right?

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library. Even when manually managing an iPhone, you can only add content from one iTunes library.

Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.

  • Computer crash - how to use ipod to transfer songs to new computer?

DD's computer crashed last week - now has a new computer. We need to get songs from 20 G color/photo ipod onto new computer. Apple help pages only seem to give you options using your old computer to set ipod to transfer music. Can anyone direct us to information on getting ipod linked to new computer and transfering music over?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • How to use ipod touch when I already own an iphone on one computer?

I have a dilemma. when I try to setup my brand new ipod touch I got for xmas, it says i must setup it up as new device or restore from backup. the problem is I use this computer to sync to my iphone 3gs.
itunes wont let me sync to an ipod touch and an iphone on the same computer, its one or the other.
if i choose to setup as new device, then when I sync my iphone it says itunes is synced to another device and must wipe my iphone clean or restore from backup???
how do i use itunes so I can put movies n music on my ipod touch without it affecting my iphone?

"Note: iTunes for Windows does not support syncing multiple iPod devices at the same time."
exactly what do they mean when they say at same time? like i can not connect one device, sync it then connect another device and sync that one??
hence my dilemma. this is from that link i read.
i tried this and itunes fails
    what a terrible dilemma, sigh
i connect the ipod touch and tell it to setup as new device.
i sync some movies and playlists.
    easy enough
then i connect my iphone...guess what? it says this is a new device, would you like to setup as new or restore from backup!!!
if i restore from backup it puts the ipod touch playlists and all my contacts are gone
it seems the only way to do this is, from reading that link, to create a new user in windows, and use this new user profile to manage ipod touch.
so now i'm gonna have to siwtch back and forth between 2 windows accounts.
what a royal pain in the butt
why can't itunes just let me sync what i want to the device and not care what it has, so i can just add regardless if new or not.
    god i hate itunes.

  • How to use ipod on multiple computers

How can I download/sychronize my itunes library with my ipod from more than one computer.  I have several computers.

You must maintain identical copies of your /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder on every computer, configure every computer for the same Apple ID and password.
iDevices are not intended to be used with more than one computer. Doing so means that every computer must be configured identically as far as using iTunes is concerned. Or you only sync with one computer, which is the intended usage.

  • Ultrabeat - how to use it as a drum machine ... any ideas / help

i want to use logic's ultrabeat as a drum machine/sequencer ... are there any manuals online or can anyone offer help?
    thanks

I humbly recommend reading the fine manual that came with LE. I found there a vast supply of information regarding Ultrabeat.
The most important thing of course ist the step sequencer and it's pattern library. you can find it to the lower left of the UB Interface. These preset patterns can be replaced by your own, so quick composing of an UB Drum Sequence is possible. Simply select and draw them to a MIDI region to insert them into your song.
For this, UB works much the same than most step sequencer drum machines.
You can also trigger certain patterns with a MIDI Event. Say, you use the lowermost octave of your MIDI Keyboard to trigger the patterns, you can use UB as a live performance drum machine. There are many ways to do this - just look into the manual (can't remember it all).
The next thing ist: UB lets you synthesize your own drum sounds. It's a comlete Synth with different LFO / Filters and so on. Lots of technical stuff - one **** of a machine for those who know how to tweak. And you can also load your own drum samples into it.
So much for the moment. Sorry for the RTFM, but i think UB with its complexity needs you to do this.
    Cheers + grooves,
    Fox

  • Using iPod Classic for Time Machine or Startup Disc

I have enabled my iPod to be used as external disc on iTunes. iPod icon does show up on desktop, but is not one of my options as backup volume for Time Machine, nor as an option for startup disc. Any ideas?

It can't be used as an ext drive for Time Machine.
Also, unless you are using an Intel Mac, you cannot use it as a bootable drive via USB. Only Firewire drives can be used as bootable drive on non Intel Macs and of course the iPod Classic is not a Firewire drive.

  • Here is how to use Airport AirDisk with Time Machine

I haven't tried this myself yet (I will give it a go this weekend), but since a lot of people are complaining about this, here is a link with instructions on how to do it.
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071026075201634
for your convenience, here is an abstract of the instructions:
First connect your AirPort disk directly to your Mac, and set up Time Machine to use it. If you want to let it back up now, that's fine. Alternatively, you can stop it and let it back up when it's plugged back into the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
Time Machine creates a file in the root directory of the disk called .1234abc5678 -- the exact name will differ on your Mac. It appears this file has to be in the root of the network shared directory. In my case, I use user accounts to manage my AirPort disk, so the directory that it actually shares out is called /Shared on my disk. So I simply move the hidden .1234abc5678 file, or whatever it may be called, to the /Shared directory. If you let Time Machine back up while plugged in locally, you will also have to move the .sparsebundle file to the /Shared directory.
Eject the disk and plug it back into the AEBS and mount it via AFP, and Time Machine should pick it right up. This method should work for any AFP share, not just AirPort disks.

I assume that this is a new AirPort Express and you have not tried to configure it previously.
Locate the AirPort Express in the general area where you would like to have more wireless signal coverage.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the back of the AirPort Express
Power up the AirPort Express and let it run a few minutes. The amber light will be blinking slowly at this point.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of your Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically on your Mac, take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything for you. When you see the indication of Setup Complete, click Done.
    You should be all set.

    I don't know. I've never tried.
Look at the manual (7210midpSimGuide.pdf in the docs directory). Maybe there is something in there. In the command line options there are a bunch of tracing options that you can specify, like tracing allocations, garbage collections, stackmaps, etc.
