How to use iTunes folder on external disk as F: when it was E:

I have my iTunes folder (organised) on an external drive, which has been E:. I am migrating to a new laptop, where D: is a virtual drive and E: is the DVD drive, so my external drive is F:. I can't change the letter for the DVD drive, so am stuck with F: I tried clicking on the .itl file, but as all the music is defined as being on E:, iTunes doesn't find it.
How can I get round this in the easiest way? The only way I can think of would be to change the location (with Keep Organised) on the old laptop to somewhere on c: (I should have enough space), then after closing iTunes, change the letter to F, then change the location again. However, I though I'd ask in case there's a better and easier method.

You should be able to change the drive letter of the DVD. I always change mine to Z:
If the library is in a self contained folder on the external drive then it will survive a change of drive letter. Note clickling on .itl file launches iTunes, but it doesn't change which library file gets opened. You need to hold down shift as iTunes starts to do that.
With a split library iTunes sometimes makes a good stab at relinking files if you correct the media folder location, attempt to play a file, track it down and then use the same location for other missing files. Alternatively I have a script called FindTracks which can help.

  • How to use iTunes with an external hard drive?

    Hi-
I'm pretty new to iTunes, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. I have about 15GB worth of music saved onto my laptop now and taking up a ton of space. So I got an 80GB external hard drive to move everything onto. What I don't understand, though, is what happens after I save my music onto the external hard drive and remove from my laptop hard drive. How do I play music in iTunes from the files stored on the external hard drive?
    Thanks in advance!!
HP Compaq NC6000 notebook   Windows 2000

Welcome to discussions! Even though this is the "using iTunes music store" forum, for questions & issues using the store, I can go ahead & offer a little advice. This link from MacMuse will explain about moving iTunes to a new drive. The most important point being is you must tell iTunes the location of the iTunes music folder on the EHD. Please post back if you have any questions.

  • My husband bought an imac for the first time.  We backed up our separate itunes libraries on external hard drive but when it was retrieved, the 2 libraries had merged and they only appear in my husbands area.  How do we split them back up again?

Really need some help here.  We got the guys at PC World to back up our old computer onto and external hard drive, but our libraries merged.  I've tried retrieving the whole thing from the external hard drive but can't seem to identify any files to retrieve.  If I could copy the whole thing into my area, we could both just erase the things from each others' libraries that we didn't want.  We are imac virgins, and need some advice!

if it's content purchased from the iTunes store we're talking about, the following script will help to tell the files apart:
    Track Down Purchases
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: "Steve Ballmer's Purchased Music". Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track's file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track.
for content you added manually (i.e. CD rips), i don't know of any easy way once the libraries were merged.

  • How to transfer itunes library to external drive and keep playlists and ratings

I don't have much space on my laptop. I have attached an external drive. I want to access my Itunes library from
the external drive.  All attempts to move the library now result in me losing my "playlists"  and even more importantly
    my ratings and genre information.
How can I move the library with all my associated data intact such as the playlists, ratings, genres?
I want this external drive to be the main location where I access my Itunes library.
Once that is done I will work on backing it up, as that will be the only place that the data exists.
Also, will my Apple TV be also be able to access my Itunes library with playlists. thus far I have not been able to do this.

Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Consolidating your library - Windows
Then copy the iTunes Folder to your external drive. Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
Disconnect your external drive and connect it to your new computer, copy the iTunes folder to the new pc. When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the default location on the new computer. On a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ (or C:\Username\Music\ in Vista). You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
Once you have copied everything over hold down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Navigate to where you placed the copy of the library file and open it up: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

How do I transfer my entire itunes library to a new pc via an external hard drive? I want to also keep the library on my old pc. Because my library is about 30gb I thought that getting an external hard drive would be the easiest way to do this. Are there any other options?

  • How to save iPhoto folders to external disk?

How to save iPhoto folders to external disk?

    You are not clear
In iPhoto folders go not hold photos - they are organizanially ielements and hold other folder or albums
are you talking aobt events by any chance? What do you want to do?
To move the photos form events to an external drive select them and export - see the user tip on exporting for details on the options available
to run iPhoto with your library on an EHD
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • ITunes won't locate iTunes folder on external hard drive....

My iMac crashed last week, and I picked it up this afternoon.
Prior to the crash, I had transferred my entire iTunes to an external hard drive. When I tried to connect the newly configured iMac, I opened iTunes, and followed the instructions as Apple recommended - at least I think that I did, but nothing happened.
Creating a new folder doesn't seem to be the way to go since all of my music is already on the external hard drive. I know that I'm missing a vital step; I'll appreciate some help.
    Thanks.

    Hi Ramón:
    You wrote:

Did you follow these steps: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748 They can be a little involved, but it should work. Try them again. Keep in mind that you're not really "creating" a new folder, so much as telling you iMac where to find the folder you've already created so it can locate your external drive and the music you have on it. And remember, as it says in the Kbase article: _Note: If you move your music library to an external hard drive, you will need to have that drive connected to access your files._
If you need a more detailed account of how best to proceed, take a look at this non Apple-produced article: http://www.tuaw.com/2006/09/19/how-to-keep-your-itunes-library-on-an-external-ha rd-drive/ A not very tech-savvy friend of mine used it to mover her itunes library to an external drive a few weeks back and said it helped her a lot. (Between you and me, the Apple ones worked did just fine for me, but whatever works, you know?)
If after following the linked instructions you still encounter problems, please post back and give us a better sense of what you did and what you mean by "nothing happened." ;- 0
    Good luck!

  • IPod crashed windows when I tried to use it as an external disk drive!

My 30g iPod says it can be used as an external disk drive, but when I tried, I got the blue screen of Death. I need a flash drive for school but can't afford one. How can I make the external disk feature of my iPod work?

I agree with Kappy.. passing files and especially via wireless is slow as slow.
Just need to be sure your TC is the new AC model??
And the OS on the computer is Lion?
Have you completed the setup of the TC via the utility? You do still need to get internet via the TC so it has to be plugged into the main router..
Give us the full picture of the network.
Then we can help you get into it.. whether you should put your files on it is another question.

  • My MACBOOK Pro turned out to be Snow Leopard, and later upgraded to LION. And update the EFI, I would like to replace the Snow Leopard, EFI can not boot, how do? How to use the Snow Leopard install disk to reduce EFI?

My MACBOOK Pro turned out to be Snow Leopard, and later upgraded toLION. And update the EFI, I would like to replace the Snow Leopard, EFIcan not boot, how do? How to use the Snow Leopard install disk to reduce EFI?

Do you mean some of your software does not work in Lion? Do you want to return to using Snow Leopard? If so, then do this:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

I'm sorry, but there is nothing that I can do to help you with this situation. I don't know why, but many people have problems when they try to buy gems in the Clash of Clans game. Personally, I wouldn't touch the game with a ten foot pole, but that's just my opinion.
You will have to contact iTunes Store Support and ask for their help. You can email them from here.

  • HT201303 how to use itune for my iphone?

    how to use itune ?

    Hi Rashid,
To use itunes for Ur iPhone click http://www.apple.com/itunes/how-to/#video-sync
    Setting up syncing
    Tutorial:
Before setting up syncing you should download and install the latest version of iTunes. Wi-Fi syncing requires iTunes 10.5 or later and iOS 5 or later. You can change your sync options at any time. Each time you sync, content is synced between your iOS device and computer to reflect new, updated, or deleted content.
    USB syncing
    Open iTunes.
Connect the iOS device to your computer using the included USB cable and select it in iTunes under Devices on the left-hand side:
Some tabs may not appear if you do not have corresponding content in your library. For example, if you do not have any podcasts in your library, the corresponding Podcast tab will not appear.
Click Apply, in the lower-right corner of the screen, to sync.
    Wi-Fi syncing
    Open iTunes
To set up Wi-Fi syncing, connect your iOS device to your computer with the included USB cable. Select your device under Devices on the left-hand side.
In the Summary tab, select "Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi".
Whenever the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it. The iOS device will sync automatically when all of the following are true:
The iOS device is plugged in to power
iTunes is open on the computer
The iOS device and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network
While the iOS device appears in the left-hand column of iTunes, you can select the content tabs and configure sync options.
Click Apply or Sync to sync the iOS device.
If the iOS device does not appear in the Devices section or you are unable to sync, please see this article for troubleshooting.
    What you can sync
    Applications
Audio content—music, podcasts, audiobooks, and iTunes U content
    Bookmarks
    Books
    Contacts
    Calendars
    Movies and TV shows
    Photos
    Notes
    Documents (File Sharing apps only)
    Ringtones
    Additional Information
The first time you sync the Info tab with your iOS device, you are asked if you want to merge data, replace data on the service, or replace the data on your computer from the following applications:
Mac: Address Book, iCal, Microsoft Entourage, or Microsoft Outlook 2011
PC: Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Addressbook (XP) and Windows Contacts (Vista and Windows 7)
For more information about syncing your device with your computer, see the user's guide or see this article.
