How to use itunes with music all on external drive?

I have a PC laptop - with Itunes installed. I have a LOT of music all organized neatly on an external drive.
Itunes folders obviously live on the internal drive, but music is all on external (not enough room on internal).
I can dump the folder from the external drive onto itunes, and all the music is there - great.
But I dont ALWAYS have that drive connected - and sometimes I open itunes when its not - for my phone sync or to buy something
from the itunes store.
I have done this for years, and only in more recent years has this become a problem - when I connect the drive, it has lost all the links to the
music on it. I go into "preferences/advanced" - and tell it to look at the folder on the external drive - and it looks like its re-establishing the links - but it still does not. This only used to happen rarely - and I would have to clear itunes, then drop the folder again - but now it does it every time that I re-attach the drive after I have used itunes when it was NOT attached.
I have to clear all my musis and then drop the folder again - which takes a while - I have tens of thousands of songs.
please help!
Thanks!

Try to use instructions for consolidating library from here, see if that helps. At some point I have noticed, especially with huge library it gets hard for itunes to keep information about different locations, unless you have external drive plugged permanently.

  • How do I direct iTunes to music on an external drive

I have my music in a folder on an external hard drive.  I purchased a new computer and have downloaded iTunes 10 but don't know how direct it to the music on the external drive

If still have your old computer and it has a split library, with the library files on the internal drive, and the media on the external, then copy the library files to the external drive, move the drive to the new computer, copy the library files into the new profile and make sure that the external drive has the same letter on the new system as the old...
If you don't have access to the old library folders you will have to import the media into a new library, in which case, if you have any Apple devices, you might want to take a look at Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Automatically syncing with music stored on external drive?

I most of my music on an external drive. The drive isn't always connected to the PC. Prior to iTunes 9.1 I could have iTunes automatically sync the music to my iPhone. If the external drive was disconnected iTunes would simply ignore the missing files and leave them on the phone.
With iTunes 9.1 (and 9.2) I now check the "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 Kbps AAC" option. When I first used this I found that if I synced my phone with the external drive disconnected, it would remove all the music files from the phone that were stored on the external drive and had been converted to 128 Kbps. That was extremely annoying to say the least so I set iTunes to sync manually to prevent that from happening. I read there was a bug in the original iTunes 9.1 that caused iTunes to always try and sync 128 Kbps converted files every time which could explain why they were being deleted, but I never tried again after upgrading.
Yesterday I clicked to sync books to my iPhone, not realizing that it would wipe out all music, movies and TV from my iPhone. Again very annoying. I went to manually sync them back and noticed my Genius mixes won't sync and I read that they only sync if auto-sync is enabled.
My question is, is there an easy way to keep my music files on an external drive, automatically, sync and have them covert to 128 Kbps without having to worry about all my music being wiped off the phone if the drive is disconnected at the time iPhone syncs?

I don't believe you can do that. The convert to 128 bit only converts the songs being written to the iPod. Every time you play a song it changes (the play count goes up) so iTunes is going to go try to find those and update them every time it syncs.
I am able to disconnect my external that holds my movies and the movies remain but those are not being converted. I think that is where the problem is.
    Good luck!

  • How to use iTunes with an external hard drive?

    Hi-
I'm pretty new to iTunes, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. I have about 15GB worth of music saved onto my laptop now and taking up a ton of space. So I got an 80GB external hard drive to move everything onto. What I don't understand, though, is what happens after I save my music onto the external hard drive and remove from my laptop hard drive. How do I play music in iTunes from the files stored on the external hard drive?
    Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to discussions! Even though this is the "using iTunes music store" forum, for questions & issues using the store, I can go ahead & offer a little advice. This link from MacMuse will explain about moving iTunes to a new drive. The most important point being is you must tell iTunes the location of the iTunes music folder on the EHD. Please post back if you have any questions.

  • How to use Count with other all fields

Hello guys. Sorry about my question because it s syntax but i didnt find in google.
How can i use count combined with other all fields.
Like SELECT count(*) 'other all fields like * '  FROM VBAK .
    Thank you very much.

Don't sure to understand your requirement (count would always be 1, aggregates are only defined with grouping)
So either use two SELECT (or replace count(*) counting Nr of records selected) if no relation between count and field values....
Or use a dynamic SELECT syntax. Use FM DDIF_FIELDINFO_GET to  get field list, then create fieldlist with every field name and count(*), create grouplist with every field name
    SELECT (fieldlist)
           INTO ...
           FROM table
           GROUP BY (grouplist).

  • How to route iTunes to music folders on external hard drive?

Here's my story: Three years ago, I successfully rerouted iTunes so that the program would find my music library on external hard drive. Two days ago, my Apple MacBook computer was updated to the Lion operating system. iTunes was also updated.
Now I have to go back into iTunes and give the program new instruction to go find the music files on external hard drive.
    Details:
My folder on external hard drive, called "iTunes Music," contains various music files and also, I notice, a folder called "iTunes."
Within that "iTunes" folder, the following folders or files are located:
    FOLDER: Album Artwork
    FOLDER: Automatically Add to iTunes
    FILE: iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    FILE: iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    FILE: iTunes Library.itl
    FILE: iTunes Linrary.xml
    FOLDER: iTunes Media
None of this makes any sense to me!
Meanwhile, on the computer's hard drive, following this routing, in the folder called "iTunes," the following folders and files are located:
Users -- Hard Drive -- Music -- iTunes
    FOLDER: Album Artwork
    FOLDER: Album Artwork 6.29.26 PM
    FOLDER: Automatically Add to iTunes
    FILE: iTunes Library 6.29.26 PM
    FILE: iTunes Library Extras.itdb
FILE: iTunes Library Extras.itdb 6.29.26 PM
    FILE: iTunes Library Genius.itdb
FILE: iTunes Library Genius.itdb 6.29.26 PM
    FILE: iTunes Library.itl
    FOLDER: iTunes Media
    FOLDER: iTunes Media 6.29.26 PM
FILE: iTunes Music Library 6.29.26 PM.xml
    FILE: iTunes Music Library.xml
I do not understand any of this. I do not understand WHICH FILE OR FOLDER I should instruct iTunes to go to in order to find the desired music files.
Once the desired files are found, they should appear in the iTunes window on screen. This is not happening.
I have tried holding down the Option key while starting iTunes, which yields a window that asks for me to CHOOSE LIBRARY. I choose the iTunes library file ( iTunes Library.itl) that is located on external hard drive. However, NOTHING HAPPENS. iTunes does not do anything. When the program opens, nothing is visible in the iTunes window, where normally songs are listed. No playlists on the lefthand side. NOTHING.
Thanks for your attention and for any insight you might be able to share.

Just so people know, there's already been several posts on this in this forum:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/18642460

  • Using iTunes on two computers from external drive

I have my itunes on an external drive and would like to use it on both my laptop and my home PC (both are Windows XP). My laptop is what I have used consistently in the past without issue, but am having trouble opening it on my PC. Thoughts?

That might be a problem coz the library saves the full path of the files, so unless the drive is seen on the 2 computers by the same drive letter, that might not be possible UNLESS u have 2 libraries for each windows.
U could share the library on ur network at home, just enable library sharing in ur prefrences, connect it to one & play it on both at the same time
    I hope that helps

  • How to resynch iTunes with music files

I have a large collection of songs. Sometimes, like now, I try to play a song and get this message:
"The song "Blah blah blah" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it now?"
I am talking a hundred or so songs would need to be found. Why does this happen, and is there an easy way to force the iTunes program to re-sync?
    Thanks!
    Dell

    Hi, IggyChimp!
    Why does this happen ...
This happens when iTunes loses track of where the songs are located, usually either the result of the files being moved or renamed with Windows Explorer.
iTunes continues to look for the files at their old location or under their old name and can't find them.
... and is there an easy way to force the iTunes program to re-sync?
    Not really.
You can go through the songs one by one and tell iTunes how to find the files or you can delete the dead-linked songs from the iTunes Library (Ctrl-clicking will make this a little bit easier) and then add them back . The drawback to this second method is you will lose Playlist Information, Ratings, Play Counts, Dates Last Played, Dates Added, Dates Modified and Equalizer and Volume Adjustment Settings you had for the earlier entries.

iTunes only backs up what is on the iPhone. You mean it installs all apps on both devices.
Select the tabs across the top and select what you want to sync to each device.

  • ITunes installed on a new drive with music on an old drive: how to keep the music data?

I had iTunes installed on my old HDD with all my music on it. It was the drive C:\
I just installed a new SSD (now the C:\ drive) in my computer. I also installed iTunes on it. I want to leave my music on my old HDD (now the G:\ drive). I can scan with iTunes for my music on my old G:\ drive, but that means I won't have the star ratings nor the play count...
I tried to copy and paste the iTunes Library.xml from my old G:\ to my new C:\. When I opened iTunes, it had all my music and the data, but I had to locate manually every single song (in a 7000+ songs library, this is a bit of a problem).
Is there a way to edit the iTunes_library.xml file to change the path of every song in it (from C:\ to G:\) since this seems to be the issue? Or how could I keep my music on my G:\ drive and itunes on my C:\ drive while keeping my music data?
    Thank you!

    Hello papapavvv,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have your iTunes Library on your G:\ drive, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.  Follow these steps to point iTunes to your G:\ drive:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.

i have an ipod 4 can i connect to pc and, using itunes match, store all music off ipod and then transfer to a new ipod 5?

    hI, bella
I also met this issue a few days ago and I finally find out how to transfer music from iPod to computer:
    1. Plug your iPod in and wait for the computer to recognize it.
    2. Open up 'My Computer' and under 'Devices With Removable Storage', double click and open apple iPod.
    3. Click on 'Tools' at the top of the window and drag down to 'Folder Options'.
    4. Under the 'View' tab, find the subfolder called 'Hidden files and folders'.
    5. Select the option 'Show hidden files and folders'.
    6. Click 'OK'.

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • My macbook pro logic board died. I had all my music on an external drive. How do I get my iTunes library, playlists etc. from my dead computer onto my new one?

My logic board died on my old macbook pro. I have a new one, but I want to get my iTunes library off my old hard drive and put it on my new one. I had set up my old MBP to store all my iTunes music on an external drive, so I have the music. The iTunes program was on the old MBP hard drive. How do I essentially recreate my previous iTunes library, playlists, etc on my new laptop?

You will need the iTunes Library.itl file which generally lives in ~/Music/iTunes/. You can recover this from the backups you were making before the HDD died. Otherwise, you cannot recreate the library.
