Probably better to use Blend modes rather than a layer mask. Try setting the blend mode of the line art layer to Darken for instance. If you do want to use a mask, take a look at individual channels, and copy the channel with the best contrast. Then load the selection of that copied channel, select the line art layer, and add the layer mask. You will probably need to invert the mask. You will probably find that the line art is a greyscale image, and need to go to Image > Mode > RGB before you can use Channels.

Separate black linework from white background

I have images that are black drawing outlines over a white background, but I want to have the black outlines on their own layer so that I can draw under them. So basically I want to make all the white transparent.
But the linework also has grey pixels and I dont want these to stay grey. For example, if I have a pixel that is 50% black and 50% white, I want it to become 50% black and 50% transparent.

Create empty layer above yours. Fill it with black. Turn it`s visibility off. Go to channel panel. Press "Ctrl" and Click to the RGB channel. Return to Layers panel. Preess "Alt" and click "Create Mask" button in the bottom of the panel. Turn visibility of black layer on. Original layer turn off. Then you can "appy mask" if you want.

Why use layer masks and adjustment layers?

I've been using PSE and CS successfully for years.
One thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that? It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer. If I like the changes, I can keep them. I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer. I can do any type of blend or combination I desire. I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part. I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; can anyone explain (preferably in 50 words or less) how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer? What can be done with them that can't be done simply using copies of the Background layer?

Here's a very basic example of the advantage of using a layer mask.
I have this picture of a sunflower and I want to convert the background to black & white, leaving just the flower in color. I duplicated the Background layer, converted it to B&W and proceeded to use the Eraser to uncover the flower color. But I made a mistake and erased outside the flower. There is no way to correct this other than deleting the layer and starting again.
Now let's use a layer mask on the B&W layer. Set the Foreground/Background colors to the defaults black/white. Using the Brush tool paint on the mask with black to reveal the color. Here I painted too far, revealing a green leaf in the background. No need to start over. Simply switch to white and paint the excess to convert back to the B&W.
Tip: while painting you can type "X" to toggle between black and white.
You could also select the flower using the various selection tools and then fill the selection with black. If it turns out the selection was not 100% accurate you can then fine-tune the result by painting on the mask with black or white as necessary.

I don't think there's enough information here to give an answer. Is this a Plug-in that you're writing or intend to write? If so, what type of Plug-in is it?
If you are writing your own plug-in, the header files included in the Photoshop SDK/API have a bunch of defines for the proper codes to use.
PITerminology.h has a large amount of keys that can be used to query for information. PIUGetInfo is probably the function that you want to call to determine what you need to know.
If you're looking for information about a specific layer, you will want to make a new PIActionDescriptor, call sPSActionDescriptor->Make(*PIActionDescriptor), and then call GetLayerInfo on the layer that you're querying information about.
You can then call sPSActionDescriptor->Get<datatype> on the layer while passing in the key of the data that you want.

Elements 11 - Brush tool not working when using layer mask

My brush tool won't work when using layer mask in PS Elements 11. I also have Elements version 10 installed and there it works fine. If I do the exact same proces in version 11 nothing happens.
Is this a bug or has something changed in the proces?

For example, if I am downloading a paper by smith called "Surgery" that was published in 2002, it will automatically set the file name in the download to smith- surgery 2002. I have heard pages is smart enough to do this.

Pages can export only its own documents. They may be exported as PDF, MS Word, RTF or Text files.
Pages can import (ie. Open a file as, or Insert a file into, a Pages document) documents in several formats, but won't rename the document as you describe. Documents that can be Opened (eg. Text, AppleWorks 6 WP, MS Word files) are converted to Pages documents, and retain their original names, with .pages replacing the original file extension. Files that can be Inserted (generally .jpg, .pdf and other image files) become part of the existing Pages file and lose their names.
It may be possible, using AppleScript, to extract the text you want and to Save a Pages file using that text as the filename, but that would depend in part on being able to identify which text is wanted and which is not.
How will the script determine where the author's name begins and where it ends?
How will the script recognize the beginning and of the title, an decide how much of the title to use in the filename?
How will the script recognize the year of publication?
For papers published in a specific journal, with a strict format for placing each of these pieces on information, or containing the needed information as searchable meta data in the file, this might be possible. But it would require knowledge of the structure of these files, and would probably handle only papers published in a specific journal or set of journals.
Outside my field of knowledge, but there are some talented scripters around here who might want to take a closer look.

How do you transfer line art from Illustrator to Photoshop?

I created a set of icons in illustrator and would like to move them to photoshop as shape layers. The icons are created from the strokes of shapes, and when I paste them into photoshop, the shape fills in and I lose the stroke. I could add a stroke in photoshop, but it misses any internal strokes that I have drawn. I could plate them as smart objects, but I would prefer them to be shape layers. How can I get these icons into photoshop?

Dear vbach: If by "Line art" you mean Line art in the original sense, i.e., black lines on a white background, I've been doing it for twenty-odd years, copying from AI to PS. It's gotten better lately with the shaped lines now available in AI. I don't have to outline anything. Select lines in Illustrator, copy, switch to PS, and paste into a new or existing file. See attached half-size jpeg. Is this what you mean?

SoundBlaster Omni - How to separate Line In from Mic Array in Win 8.1?

In Windows 8.1, in Control Panel, under Sounds, the Line In is disabled when the Mic Array/Mic In is enabled. So, apparently, for some strange reason, I can't have the mic work and play things from the Line in. If you look at the Omni Utility in the system tray and go to the Mixer, the Mixer combines Line in/Mic In/Mic Array with no option to separate them out. THIS means I can't use the Line In without it also playing everything heard from the mic. Directions say to listen to your line-in by changing settings via the mixer, but the directions are WRONG, because there is no way to separate out the Mic.
What I am trying to do, which I've done successfully using the on-board crappy Realtek sound from the motherboards of various PCs over the past dozen or more years, is have sound from my SECOND PC go to the Line IN on my MAIN PC, so I can have sound from both PCs play out of my main system's speakers or headphones - and still use my Mic (I play WoW/Use Ventrilo and Mumble).
Color me surprised that this is apparently something that I cannot do with an $80 SoundBlaster Omni USB sound card. Then, when I DO set it to just the Line in (which won't work for me when I need to use Ventrilo or Mumble), the sound quality is utter garbage compared to using the Realtek sound on my main PC. Really? How does this USB sound card offer LESS functionality with WORSE sound than the on-board sound from PCs I've owned?
Is there some magic workaround for this, because otherwise, it's going back to the store and I doubt I'll ever trust another Creative product.

Need help using layer masks

I have tried to use the quick selection tool to select areas of a photo in an adjustment layer but it does not seem to make them available to the adjustment. The selection occurs on the photo but not in the adjustment layer box, as the selection brush does. I find that the selection brush is rather hard to use as you can not see exactly what you are selecting as it indicates only on the layer box not on the photo itself.
I am sure there is a better way to do this but I can't find it.
Can someone give me a hint or clue, please?
It sure would be handy to be able to use the quick selection tool, or one of the other selection tools to isolate parts of images for either extra work, or to keep separate from work on the rest of the image.
I know I am misunderstanding something in Barbara's instructions in Elements 8 page 129+.

You could use "select >"save selection", then reload it when you have the layer you want to work on active.
Keep in mind all you need to do is double click on a layer mask to activate for painting.
Creating an adjustment layer automatically gives you an attendant layer mask, you locally diminish its effectiveness locally by painting (Brush Tool) with black, and varying the brush opacity as needed.

Using Reader XI (eleven). Line art in download file has turned black. How do I get line art back?

I am using Reader XI (eleven). I have downloaded my Nikon S9700 camera resource manual (pdf) and now all the line art appears as black images. How do I restore the line art? Document was created in Adobe 5.X. I have downloaded most recent version of camera manual and same condition exists.

Answered my own question: Under Preferences> Accessibility> Document Color Options I had selected "Replace Document Colors". Don't you love it when things work out?

How to display a string in separate line in a jsf page?

Hi,
my view bean returns a string say, " Java Server Faces" .I just want to display all the three in a separate line like
Java
Server
Faces
If i go for concatenation or append method it is displaying in a way as before in java console.But when i display the same in a JSF page it is displayed as a single word.Can anyone help me in this?

But am passing a single string value but appended as "Java"+"\n"+"Server"+"\n"+"Faces".
In JSF page am just calling the method so, it should return the values in 3 separate lines.

How to use magic move with connection lines?

When I use magic move with connection lines, they disappear and reappear in the next slide. It seems like magic move doesn't recognize the connection lines (or can't match them), so it just redraws them, instead of leaving them there.
I'm trying to use magic move to make a nice presentation that includes connection lines. How can I make without the lines disappearing every time something moves?

Group the shapes and connection line together:
select the objects then Arrange > Group (alt Command G)

I have a tax code where there is ED, Cess,Secess & CST(Which is inventorised). Now the CST is getting added to material cost during GRN. There is no separate line item for CST. But my client wants the CST will be inventorised but it should be posted to a different GL in MIGO.

The other way is to go to System Preferences, Sharing, and then check the box next to Screen Sharing. You may have to adjust some of the settings in there, but give that a shot.
