How to use mac cd/dvd drive to install software on pc

My PC's dvd drive went bad. I need to install software from a dvd, is there a way to use my Macbook Pro dvd drive to install the software on the windows laptop?

If your PC is a desktop, and you intend to still use the PC for a while ...
I would do this ...
Use it as an excuse to get a BluRayread/DVDRW/DL.  Lets you play BluRay and extends the "useful life" of the PC.
Or make it an external USB BluRay ...
eww ...
What are the rumblings about MBP using external BluRay?
For the record, iLS6, this is "turning lemons into lemonade"

  • How to use protable external Hard Drive to install software?

    Hello,
I have 250 GB External Portable Hard Drive. When i install any software,in installation window it only show macintosh HD..Please tell me how to install software in External HDD.

Some developers write software installers that will only install the software on the running boot volume. You could try installing it on the running boot volume and then moving the installed app to the external drive with Finder. It may or it may not work.

  • Use a windows dvd drive to install bootcamp windows

    Hi!
I know it is possible, I looked up google about it but it's pretty difficult to find...
My macbook's dvd drive is broken and I don't have enough money to buy another one nor another external dvd drive. So I would like to use my girlfriend's laptop dvd drive to boot up windows install on my macbook.
How do you think I could do it???
    Thanks a lot!

    Tom:
Unfortunately it is impossible with the current procedure of boot camp installation of Windows. This is because the drivers for the ports (USB/Firewire) are not installed until Windows is completely installed first on an intel Mac.
Now, if you are planning on installing windows as virtual machine via Parallels or VMWare Fusion then there may be a way to do so by using the windows pc over the network by OSx.

  • Can I use an external dvd drive to install windows?

Basically I have a licensed version of Windows Vista Business laying around, but it is on 5 CDs, and I can't seem to find a legal source to redownload it so I can burn it on a dvd to use my legal key. And I know in the bootcamp instructions it says it must be on one disk, due to newer macs not having an analog eject method, and the mac keyboard's eject button not working since this is before you can install the drivers.
One work around I have read is that you can run an eject.exe program from a flash drive via command prompt while installing, and this would eject the disk so you can put in the next one, but if it can read from a USB flash drive during the install process can it not also read from a USB dvd drive?

vLite http://www.vlite.net/about.html can merge the CDs to one DVD.
But it has to be done on a Windows PC.
Plus, be aware that with the newer 2011-released Macs Apple has abandoned XP and Vista support, so that Windows 7 is the only one supported.

  • HT204150 using iMac dvd drive to install software in macbook air

    How do I do it?
Where will answer be poster. Please email at [email protected]

iCloud doesn't come into it. You can share the DVD drive on one Mac with another Mac which doesn't have one, for certain types of optical disks (for example you can't do this with movie DVDs or install disks for an operating system). You can probably do this with the PE installed, though I've never tried this.

  • How can I use a remote CD/DVD drive to install MacOS 10.4?

    Hello,
My old iBook G3 needs to be updated to MacOS 10.4 however its CD drive doesn't work. I have an retail copy of Tiger and have put it in my iBook G4 but when I open the installer it doesn't allow me to choose my mounted iBook G3 (which I have connected through a wireless network). How can I use my iBook G4's CD/DVD drive to install MacOS 10.4 on my iBook G3?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

'Making matters worse' seems a bit excessive, since it isn't that uncommon for an optical drive to die in an otherwise perfectly good machine. (Ask parents with inquisitive kids, for example!
Plus, this is an iBook, & I don't believe OWC sells replacement internal drives for them, only for PowerBooks, so it doesn't seem that unreasonable to suggest that he first try something that has a good chance of doing what he wants to do, which is install Tiger on the iBook, rather than suggest anything that may or may not be appropriate for his situation.
Since he already has purchased the DVD, the most he is risking with the TDM approach is the cost of a 6 pin to 6 pin FW cable, which he still should find useful no matter what else he decides to do. If nothing else, it shouldn't cost anymore than the exchange of the DVD for CD's, right?

  • Using a Mac's DVD drive to load a DVD on Windows XP

I have a Windows XP machine which does not have a DVD drive, and a Mac laptop running Tiger which does - and some ethernet cable!
Is it possible to network the two computers together and use the Mac's DVD drive to access and run the DVD on the Windows computer? If so, how would I go about doing this? I have no experience of file sharing over Windows.
    Thanks for the help

    Hi Thomas,
I don't think you can, but it won't hurt to try... well, it won't hurt the Mac anyway.
If all else fails, you could try making a bootable image of it, there are several XP utilities for that, and this NetBoot might work...

  • Do macs use the worst dvd drives???

this is just a question because i have noticed that a lot of DVDs that i burn on my mac play in my home DVD player, through my lacie external DVD drive and/or my friends PC work perfectly but they wont play in my iMac G5 or my MacBook Pro DVD player.
PS. the DVDs that i use are verbatim 99% of the time. and a lot of the problems are with dual layer DVDs.
PSS. please dont confuse my question with "macs DO use the worst DVD drives" as a statement. i do not mean it that way at all. thank you.

    Hi,
It's a bit long story, page #39 of the following document shows you all:

  • Problems Installing Win7 using External, USB DVD Drive

I have a mid 2010 15" i7 MBP which I upgraded to from 4GB to 8GB RAM courtesy of OWC.  I recently upgraded the 500GB 7200RPM HD with a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 and using an OWC Data Doubler, I replaced the DVD SuperDrive with the 500GB Hard Drive.
I used an External USB DVD Drive to install OS X SL On the SSD without issues. Also, I got all my updates and software installed and working without any problems.
I've been running great for about 2 weeks now, so I decided to install Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I ran Boot Camp Assistant and partitioned the 240GB SSD in half 120/120. Everything went fine with creating the partition. I selected to Install from the Win 7 DVD media in the USB DVD drive and rebooted.  I got a grey screen.  I turned the computer off and turned it back on.  Holding down Option, I selected the Install DVD from the Boot Menu.  I then got a screen with the Apple Logo flashing intermittently with a Circle/Cross Hatch.  So I can't get the Windows Install to start to save my life.  I know the External, USB DVD works since I used it to install OS X and I have no problems using it in OS X.  I Know the media works because I tried a test install, without activation in a VMWare Fusion VM.
    Any suggestions are appreciated?

So here is the answer.  The Firmware on the MacBook Pro only supports installation of OS X from External Media and will not install operating systems from 3rd Parties.  I tried to install Windows XP, Win7 Ultimate  32 & 64bit, and Ubuntu 11.04 but no success.
Supposedly, the MacBook Air does support installation of 3rd party operating systems from external media, but I have no way to confirm this.
I ended up reinstalling the internal DVD drive installing Win 7 and Ubuntu on the SSD.  Using rEFI, I'm able to triple boot all 3 operating systems.  Then removed the drive again and reinstalled the 2nd HD. Everything seems to be working fine.
I'm looking for someone who has experience in Mac EFI Hacking to see if there is a way to enable booting 3rd Party OSes from external media.  I'm guessing someone could examine the MBA firmware and figure out how to hack that capability into the MBP.

  • Starting up an emac using an external dvd drive?

My emac has frozen. I was installing the software update to system 10.4.6 when the machine crashed (not enough HD space? don't know.)
Now, it won't get past the Starting Mac OS X screen.
I figure I need to do a clean install or something drastic, just to rebuilt the system software. I think that will work, but I have a problem:
The 10.4 disks I bought only came in DVDs. My emac only has a CD drive, so I installed the software using an external DVD burner.
I have tried to restart holding down the C key, but it's not starting off the external drive.
I have no idea where the ancient OSX disks (CDs) are that came with the computer, and don't know if it's a good idea to go backwards anyhow.
I know the actual hard drive on the emac is functional, because I was able to make it a target disk to back up the files today.
Any clue how to start up using the external DVD drive and the 10.4 DVD?

    Edward Rosenstein,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Had you used patchburn on the external DVD drive?
Does the drive appear as an option using the option key to bring up Startup Manager?
You mention backing up the eMac's hard drive in Firewire Target Disk Mode. The host computer you used for that should show you how much free space there is on the eMac hard drive; you'll need at least 5 to 8 GB free.
If the host computer you used for the Firewire Target Disk Mode backup has a DVD drive, you can use that to install 10.4 onto the eMac while the eMac is connected in target disk mode. If the host computer doesn't have a DVD drive, try moving the external DVD drive to the host, run Patchburn if it's not recognized, and you should be able to install onto the eMac that way.

Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
    DVD movies.
    Audio CDs.
Copy protected discs such as game discs.
Install discs for an operating system such as Microsoft Windows (for use with Boot Camp), or Mac OS X.
    Burn a CD or DVD

  • How to use ssd as boot drive and hdd as storage on a macbook pro 13

Does anyone know how to use SSD as boot drive and have HDD in optical bay as storage on a Macbook pro 13. I mean in that both drives work as one . by formatting using mac software . I would like to run all programs and OS but would love to have my downloads and useless data on run on my 1tb 5400rpm hdd without me have to manual send it there..

Does anyone know how to use SSD as boot drive and have HDD in optical bay as storage on a Macbook pro 13. I mean in that both drives work as one
Each drive mounts as a separate volume. There is no convenient way to make them look like one contiguous volume.*
Franky, with an hdd and a ssd I would recommend you put your home dir on the hdd and leave the ssd for the OS and your key applications.  It's relatively easy to do and I think better than moving only portions of your stuff.

  • Can I install Tiger using an external DVD drive?

My PowerBook is being repaired and I have to use an older G4/733 tower (OS 9.2; CD/zip drives only) from 2001 ASAP. I purchased Tiger and now need to load it, along with the new software. Rather than purchasing an internal dvd drive, can I buy and external dvd drive to install Tiger/new software? I've seen some posts that say "no" and others that say yes, as long as its firewire, not USB. In looking at external drives, I've seen some compatibility requirements that say OS X as the minimum. Some places like CDW and the Apple store don't seem to have an answer for me. Does anybody here know? thanks!
    Bob
    PowerPC G4   Mac OS 9.2.x

Internal drives are much cheaper; you can get a DVD burner for under $40 online, vs. well over a $100 for an external, which may or may not boot your specific system.
The NEC ND-3550A or Pioneer DVR-110D will both boot the OS installer DVD when using the "C" Key, or from Startup Disc...
In a QS, you just have to remove the drive tray faceplate before installing the drive; This Apple Article has clear diagrams of the replacement process.

  • How to make the CD/DVD drive compatible on Satellite 5000-204

    Hi all,
I see a thread on replacing CD/DVD drive on this notebook, but it was closed, so i write this post.
The most of recent unit is "cable select" type and will not be recognized from many Toshiba notebook.
To solve that you must search a drive for which you can found a firmware update that change it to be "reverse cable select" type, as Nec or Optiarc
If you buy a drive that can't be recognize (like me) read below.
I succesfully replaced the DVD-ROM/CD-RW unit with a Pioneer DVR-KD08 DVD writer.
This unit is a "cable select" type (as most other recent unit) so it can't be recognise by this notebook (and many other Toshiba models). The solution is to connect pin 45 and 47 together on the drive or on the connector adapter (this second solution is simpler).
If you watch the drive from behind these pins are the second and third from the left on the upper row of pin of the connector.
In the connector adapter it's simpler to connect these pin (with care) with a solder iron directly on the circuit board.
Obviously on the circuit board the pins are the second and third from the right.
After this the unit will recognize ok.

    Hi buddy
First of all thank you for participation in the forum its always nice to have users who shares the own experience and knowledge.
Thanks you also for this info how to make the CD/DVD drive compatible.
But to be honest Im a little bit skeptical because there is a chance that the drive could be damage during this procedure.
So everyone could do this but only at the own risk!!!
Usually the compatible drives can be found in the user manual and it would be useful taking a look into the user manual before buying an NOT compatible drive ;)
    Cheers mate
