How to use my second hard drive on my desktop pro

I have a 12 core desktop pro with 2 HD's installed. How can I use my second hard drive independently? To use it as a second computer unto itself without all the
extra add on's I have on drive one.

how long ago did you ask this question?

  • Re: How to use the second hard drive in Satellite A300?

I have been given a second hand Satellite A300 that was being thrown out due to a faulty DVD.
I fixed the DVD and have a perfect working system.
On opening the case I discovered it has 2 x 250GB hard drives. I checked CMOS and the 2 drives show. Yet, Vista only shows the one drive.
Excuse my ignorance but how do I access the second drive?

I have Satellite A300 with two hard drives and each HDD has other operating system. Both HDDs are recognized properly.
I dont know what is wrong there but both HDDs should be recognized automatically.
Try to set BIOS to default settings and check it again.
Try to start bootable Microsoft installation disc and check if both HDDs are shown in setup.
I just hope there is no some hardware problem.

  • Using the second hard drive in my G5

I bought my Mac about 14 months ago with twin 250GB hard drives fitted. I wanted to use the second hard drive to store my CD collection through itunes.
I have tried to install itunes on the second hard drive but the software installer says it has to go on the startup volume. I have also tried copying my itunes folder and pasting it to the second hard drive as a backup but it won't allow this either. It says that the drive cannot be modified.
How do I use the second hard drive as intended? I upgraded to Tiger so do I need to install that on the second hard drive?
    Thank you.

    Hi Mike;
I have a 250 GB and a 160 GB hard drive in my Quad. A long time ago when I had much smaller drives, I did move Users to another disk because I was running out of space on my system drive. One of the problems I ran into with this was when my second drive with Users on it didn't start quickly enough for OS X. OS X created a new Users for me with nothing in it. It was a royal pain getting my system pointed back to the Users on the second drive.
What I do now is leave Users where OS X installs. I now move just my project files, music, photos and web pages. I find that this is largest part of Users. It is also the part of Users that I am the most concerned about. With all of my project files on another drive, the system is able to access data from both drives very quickly. It also makes backup simpler.

    Hi,
the BootCamp support site http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ and the BootCamp Installation Guide to be found there.
Read the Guide carefully and make sure to have/make a backup of your OSX before starting.

  • How do I use my second hard drive for storage, not back up?

Hi, I bought a second hard drive to store files (not back-up for my system), but when I moved some files over to drive two and then deleted the same files from drive one, they also deleted from the 2nd drive! Fortunately I could reverse the process and there was no loss, but what now? How do I disconnect the two so I can use the second as storage?
Thanks and happy Easter for those of you who celebrate it. Kate (Porter)

Whilst I normally drag files around, a copy and paste still should have created a replica on the destination drive.
That the second is mounted internally makes my describing it as an external drive inaccurate, but wouldn't cause the problem.
So that still leaves the scant possibility that the original source is itself an alias.
Was the copy and paste done in a Finder window or was it done via some other application's window?
I look forward to an update on this unusual event.

  • How to tell if second hard drive is going bad

Back in November added second hard drive to my G4 and installed Leopard on it. In last month incredible amount of app crashes, hangs, "force quit," etc. and the occasional kernel panic.
Did an erase and install and now seems like more of the same.
When I run old 10.3 on the original hard drive, life is just fine. To that end, I'm beginning to suspect the hardware. However, when I put the original Apple Hardware Test CD in and tried to use it (never done that before), it said it wouldn't run on this machine.
Is there a Plan B? Is there something wrong with the CD?
Thanks in advance for the help.

SMART - look at the bottom of the screen in DU when you click on the drive.
Lepard may be uncovering faulty or marginal memory. Each OS upgrade has put memory to use more so than previously.
Memtest is your best bet there. Or Rember which people like for GUI.
I tended in the past to wipe a drive with zeroes.
If you aren't using Disk Warrior (or TTPro) then you really don't know if your drive has directory or file errors, sadly, 3rd party is pretty much a given and must.
Intech Speedtools is another. Can do a thorough SMART test (45 minutes), test media, scan and reassign bad blocks, and stress a drive.
Disk Warrior manual hardware test will tell you one thing that helps: whether a drive has used spare blocks and how many left, meaning it might be time to zero a drive. Drives tend to fail early if they will, sometimes off the assembly line. Or down the road.
It would be nice if we could run Memtest from Apple Hardware Test. AHT does spot real obvious problems with memory, but sometimes iTunes seems to do a better job.

  • What kind and how to add a second hard drive to my dv7-6157cl?

I want to add a second hard drive, which can be done on this laptop.  What type of hdd would I purchase?
Can I add a solid state drive?
Are there instructions on how to do this on this particular model?
    Thank you

I would not use a SSD for a second drive, there is really no benefit to this, an SSD would be much better for the primary hard drive where the OS runs from.
Any standard laptop Sata hard drive will work
You would need a hard drive hardware kit, includes bracket, shield, screws, and data cable.
I would contact HP parts to be sure you get the correct part(s) for your specific model
Here is your service manual which has instructions on how to replace hard drives in that model

  • How to exculde the second hard drive backup from time machine of lion os

My Mac Pro 2010 mid version is using Mac Lion OS, and I have installed three internal hard drives (two 3T hard drives for storage one 2T hard drive for time machine hard drive). When I start to run the time machine to backup the system hard drive, the time machine will include those internal hard drives automatically, and it stop backup and claim time machine is lack of storage space. Of course I know it is not big enough to backup those extra hard drive. However, I just only need to backup the system drive only, but I cannot locate any setting related how to exclude other internal hard drive in time machine. So I still cannot backup my system drive yet.

  • How to add a second hard drive in a T42

I have a T42 with a DVD/CD R/W. My current hard drive is only 40GB and it is running Windows XP Service Pack 3. I would like to install a second hard drive for extra storage capacity. What do you recommend for an extra hard drive and can it be installed in place of the removable DVD/CD drive? Since the currently installed DVD drive is using the UltraBay, I would think that just removing it and installing the additional hard drive in the UltraBay should be possible. Please advise. Thank you in advance.

  • How to add a second hard drive

I want to add a second hard drive, mainly because my server hosts a photo gallery and I would like to store those photos on a separate drive.  What is entailed in adding this second drive?
    -Thanks

Firstly, find if you want SATA or IDE.  Then make sure you have a free hole on the mobo for the drive, and spare in the case for it.  Then make sure your PSU can power it.  Then decide how much space you want and how much you want to pay.  Then buy, screw it in, and connect the ribbon cable and power cable.  Then boot, and it should come up in /dev.  Then partition, and make a filesystem, then mount.  Easy

  • How to use an external hard drive for your music storage

How do I use my external hard drive as my storage for music? I have already saved my music on my external and I have my iTunes program on the computer just wondering what is the next step is? Also I want to make sure I do not use my computer's hard drive for any sizable storage.

sorry to butt in, but this appears to be the best thread to pose my question/problem.
i have successfully migrated my iTunes Library to my external hard drive. the last part of the instructions tell me to delete the iTunes music folder from my hard drive to free up space.
however, i've not done this because i would like to keep a reduced number of music files on my MacBook so that i can listen to music when i'm away from my external hard drive.
i've managed to delete the files i don't want stored on my hard drive, and when i open iTunes without the external hard drive, it defaults to the original location. i'm sure this is not good practise, because whilst i can now play music, the information in iTunes is not right.
what is the best way of storing and playing some of my iTunes library on my hard drive, whilst using the external drive as a 'master'? can it be done?

  • Best way to format a second hard drive in a MacBook Pro?

I put a SSD in my MacBook Pro and I am wondering what is the best way to format the hard drive that i am putting in the place of the optical drive. I could set it put in raid configuration but I'm pretty sure that it takes the speed from the slower drive. Making my upgrade pointless. Should I put the hard drive in and format it to Mac OS extended (journaled). Is this my best option. Will i only be able to put applications on the second hard drive or will i only be able to put on files such as media, word docs ect.?

    Hello,
I read some of your responces to other computer issues. Do you have any thoughts that may help my situation. I posted this earlier. I try to use my OS X HD to reinstall but I only get so far and I am told install can't go any further.
    Detailed Discription;
    Everything is running-phizz-black screen
Start button-enter password-gray bar at bottom of screen-
Gray bar fills 1/4 - computer shuts off
So I looked around on wifes computer and find a few sequences to try and fix.
    didn't work.
So I am here now after accessing reinstall  from my os x disc and a couple other discs to choose from.
    Nothing is working-need help
    Past history;
from the begining my mac never carried a charge. Then it stopped charging completely.
I just lived with it-but now this-christ man it ticks me off.
Anyways I would appreciate all the hel I could get, thanks
    Thank You

You could put your install disc on a USB Flash drive with Disk Utility. Also, here is the USB optical drive enclosure I bought. He raised the price a few bucks. Mine ran $10.00 with the shipping.

  • How do i transfer external hard drive content to macbook pro?

How do i transfer external hard drive content back to my macbook pro?
I do not see the hard drive icon or a back up icon, where should it be?

What kind of drive is it - a large drive with a power cord, or a portable drive? Can you tell if the drive itself is actually on? (Is there a light, or a power switch, etc, can you hear it?)
How is it attached to the Mac?
On your Mac, click on the desktop, then go to the Finder menu (top left), click Preferences, then under the General tab, make sure that everything is ticked.
If that works, you should then get the external HD icon appearing on your desktop.
    Hope that helps.
