How to use old 2005 cinema display (20'') with MacBook Air (mid-2009)

My old 20'' cinema display (2005) has three ports coming out of its power box (single-port dvi, usb, firewire).  Is it possible to use this display with my newer MacBook Air (mid-2009) ? If so, what kind of connector do I need?  Thank you very much for your help.

To use my old Cinema display (2005) with my old PowerMac G5 (2005) I had to plug in all three ports (DVI, usb and firewire) into the desktop.  Can I really use the display just with the DVI output plugged into my MacBook Air mini-Display Port ?

  • Using old 20" Cinema Display on new Macbook Pro

    Hi all
I have a new Macbook Pro runing OS X 10.7. I want to connect it to my old 20" Cinema display (aluminium one that I bought with a G5 around 7 years ago). I've got got the Mini Display Port to DVI adaptor, but this doesn't seem to work - it won't detect the display. Any clues?
    Thanks in advance

Does your Displays system preference show an Arrangement tab? If not there there is something wrong with the connections or the display itself.  Nothing further can be done on your computer if the Displays preferences don't detect the presence of the display and that would be indicated by having the Arrangement tab showing both screens.
Check yiour connections, especially the mini-displayport connection.  Make sure it is firmly pushed in.  They can look like they are fully inserted but actually aren't.

Just plug it into the Thunderbolt port. That port directly supports mini-DisplayPort screens.

  • How to connect old Apple Cinema Display to new Mac Mini?

    Hello,
I'm considering replacing an old Mac Mini with the new model, but I intend to keep on using my old Apple Cinema Display 20" with it. But i'm having some trouble finding the right conversor (it seems there isn't any from Apple...)
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

If by "old" apple cinema the OP is referring to the aluminum displays of the later mac models, then yes, that's a no-brainer, the problem is that if the OP is referring to the "real" old apple cinema displays, which have a DVI-type connection with power included on the same cable, like the displays the former Mac G4 or G5 had, then he needs a ADP to DVI port, which in most cases it cost more than the actual monitor itself.. I guess the OP needs to specify what does it mean by old apple displays or throw in a link to an image..

What model (year) MacBook Pro?  Depending on the model, it may have DVI, mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or HDMI video connectors.
What model (yeasr) and size (17", 20". 22" ...) display.  Depending on the model, it may have ADC, singlre-link DVI, dual-link DVI, or Mini DisplayPort connectors.

  • Four monitor setup on 2013 mac pro using old 23" Cinema Displays

My current monitor setup on a 2009 mac pro is four monitors.  Three 23" Apple Cinema Displays (aluminum, mid 2000's) and one large Sony HDTV mounted to the wall as a fourth monitor.
I achieve this via 2 Geforce 120 video cards, each with a mini display port and a Dvi port each.
My question is, can I retain this same exact monitor setup on a new 2013 Mac pro cylinder?  If so, what adapters will be needed, and do they all plug into the thunderbolt ports?
Hearing all kinds of nightmares about multiple monitor problems with the new MP so want to be sure this will work before I drop big bucks.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the quick reply!
For the Tv I'm currently going VGA out of that to a Dvi adapter into the old Mac Pro.  The 3 Cinema Displays are all ether direct Dvi to the video card and two I have to use a Dvi to mini display port adapter.
So for the new Mac Pro, assuming I don't use the HDMI port, I would need Dvi to minidisplayport adapters for each of the 3 cinema displays and a VGA to minidisplayport for the TV?
EDIT: And the mini display ports may as well all be active I guess, and they need to plug into the usb bus for power?
    Thanks

  • How do I connect  Apple 20" Cinema Display to orignal MacBook Air which does not have a Fire-Wire port. Is this possible? Any advice would be appreciated. I have the Micro-DVI to DVI adapter. Norm

I Wish to connect my 6 year old Apple 20" Cinema Display to an orignal MacBook Air which does not have a Fire-Wire port. Is this possible? Any advice would be appreciated. I have the Micro-DVI to DVI adapter. Norm

The FireWire cable is just for the FireWire ports on the display.  The display will run without it.

  • How to use old "Apple Loops for Soundtrack" with Garageband

Since Soundtrack (was part of FinalCut Express HD) doesn't work anymore (since some ProKit framework update) and was not part of the FinalCut Express 4 upgrade I used Garageband for sound creation and editing. But I missed some good loops from the old Soundtrack.
The Apple Loops for Soundtrack were still sitting on my harddisk but Garageband didn't recognize them in the Loop-Browser. Looking at the structure I found the Search Index files (/Library/Audio/Apple Loop Index/). I have two there, one for Garageband and another for iLife Sound Effects. Both are interpreted by Garageband. But no third for the old Soundtrack Loops. So I had a look at the Sound Loops installer DVD from FinalCut HD and there I found a similar structur and copied the Index file to the location of the two indexes mentioned above. I left the Loops for Soundtrack where they are (also could edit the index file for new locations, but that's a 7.5MB text file) and now Garageband knows their location and also lists the loops at the right categories inside the Loop-Browser.
Maybe that helps someone, even if I didn't find a topic about it here.

Ah.. ok, then never mind. Just didn't find any information about how to use the old soundtrack loops with garageband and so I did some thinking on my own. And if it works that easy, the better it is

  • How to use an external hard drive on a MacBook Air?

    Hi there.
Recently I bought a portable USB external hard drive for my MacBook Air due to my full startup disk. I also bought multiple disks for the hard drive. I inserted the disk, hooked up the USB, and did everything properly. When I first hooked it up, I lost all internet files that I had saved. All images, videos and downloads (such as Minecraft and other gaming downloads) from the internet were gone and unable to find.
Now, I don't want to make the wrong move and lose all of my internet files again, so I am asking how to transfer files SAFELY to the USB without any files being deleted. I tranfered files before, but they were just short cuts to the original file, so I am also asking how to fix that as well. My Dad was a computer technician, although he didn't work for Apple, so he doesn't know how to use the USB.
I've tried everything to find my internet files, but nothing. If there is a way to get them back, I'd be glad if you shared that with me. My dock files aren't working due to this insanely full startup disk, so I'd appreciate it if you could tell me ASAP how to use the USB, how to SAFELY transfer files without them turning into shortcuts, and how to get my internet files back.
    Thank you very much.
P.s My OS X version is 10.8.3 (Not with Mountain Lion)

You cannot format a drive so that files will be automatically put on that drive when you run out of room on another drive. Transferring the files must be done specifically by you. You will need to learn how to manage free space on the SSD because 64 GBs is a bit small for much more than OS X.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • HT5140 How to use RTL when writing in Arabic on macbook air?

I cannot write from right to left on my macbook air? I have Word 2011 installed already.

I don't think so.  TextEdit and Open/LibreOffice are free.  Mellel light is $15.  Pages 5 is $20.  All much much cheaper than Word, which is really a defective app when it comes to languages.
Sometimes you can make Word for Mac work with Arabic if you import an arabic document created with Windows Word and then edit that.  But I don't think very many users find this workaround that useful in practice.

  • How to install Windows 8(8.1) on my MacBook Air (mid 2011)

When I try to install Windows 8 in EFI mode, install complete successfuly, but after Windows EFI boot, I haven't  Audio and have basic Video driver. I try to install  native (from BootCamp) drivers for this devices, but Windows don't want to install this drivers.
    Please, help me! Thanks!

The proper way to install Windows is thru BootCamp. Although Apple uses many standard components such as Intel's CPUs and Toshiba SSDs, it also uses proprietary components not available to the Wintel market. As such Apple is the only source for drivers and BootCamp is the environment within which they are installed.
If you want to use your MBA solely as a Windows computer you'll need to start over and create the maximum sized BootCamp partition with a minimal Mac partition. That may not be what you want but it is how every happy Windows user I know of has insulted their Mac.

Im using a mtech hiface usb device for audio on my Mac Air. If i disconnect it from its ac and disconnect the hiface from the usb then take the Mac Air to a new location to work then return it I have an awful lot of static. im assuming its static electricity from the move or something. ive tried to ground it with my body by touching the mac air while touching something grounded. The static stops at that point but starts all over when i move my hand away from the computer. Any suggestions, could it be a setting in the USB? Thanks.

  • How do I find out the Model # to my Macbook Air?

Hi all. Finding the serial # is easy, but I cannot figure out what model # this is. The laptop was purchased used with no box or manuals, etc.
Is there a way to find out this information? My wife wants to sell this and buy a Macbook Pro, but I do not want to list it in eBay or Craigslist without knowing exactly what to put down.
    Thanks so much.

    Matt,
    That a Model A1304.
    Here is some history:
Announced in October 2008 and shipped in November, the MacBook Air (Late 2008) was no faster than its predecessor, in terms of processor speed. It gained performance, however, from a faster 1066 MHz bus, a larger 6 MB on-chip L2 cache, and a faster graphics chipset. In addition, the micro-DVI port was replaced with the new Mini DisplayPort, which was capable of driving a larger external display (2560x1600). The MacBook Air (Late 2008) shipped in two configurations: 1.6 GHz/2GB RAM/120 GB HD/$1799 U.S. and 1.86 GHz/2 GB RAM/128 GB solid-state/$2499 U.S.
Edit: Actually the Mid 2009 also shows as MacBookAir 2,1
Introduced in June 2009, the MacBook Air (Mid 2009) represented both a speed-bump and a cost reduction of the MacBook Air (Late 2008). It shipped in two configurations: 1.86 GHz/2GB RAM/120 GB HD/$1499 U.S. and 2.13 GHz/2 GB RAM/128 GB solid-state/$1799 U.S.

My answer was based on it's not really that much harder to use than plugging it in.
but I think the follow up would be ---HOW
Follow the very. very simple instructions that came with the AppleTV.
    Plug AppleTV in
    Connect it to your TV.
    Turn on AppleTV.
Launch iTunes on your computer and enable Home Sharing.
Settings > Computers and turn on Home Sharing. Use the same  AppleID as you use in iTunes on your computer.

  • Mac Mini 2012 and I want to use a new 27" Lighting Display and my old 27" Cinema Display as a second Monitor

    Evening all,
I have a Mac Mini that I have been using a 27" Cinema Display on for a couple years - works GREAT, love the Mini and that display. The Cinema Display has Power for a Laptop, USB connector and a Mini Display Port connection on it.
I am a Guitarist / Songwriter and I use Pro Tools a lot. So I thought I would invest in the new Lightning Display for my Mac Mini. I would get the extra ports for Firewire, and USB, as well as now I could "Daisy Chain" my old Cinema Display off the new Lightning Display.
WHAT A PAIN IN THE BUTT THIS HAS TURNED INTO !!!!  I have honestly spent more than 6 hours trying to find adapters or ways to make these monitors BOTH work at the same time with the Mac Mini ( you know, a Dual Monitor Setup . . .)
    HELP !!!
1 - If I could find a HDMI MALE to Mini Display Port FEMALE adapter, I would run it on the HDMI interface - apparently no such adapter exists.
2 - You apparently can NOT daisy chaine the Cinema Display off the Thunderbolt Port on the new Monitor ( silly that that does not work, but it does not )
I am really stuck here - how do I get these monitors to work as "Dual Monitors" on the Mac Mini ???
    Thanks !

The HDMI port won't work for a 27" monitor, it maxes out at 1920*1200...
Supports dual simultaneous displays -- 1920x1200 on an HDMI display or a DVI display using the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter and 2560x1600 on a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort display or even a VGA display (with adapter). Thunderbolt is backwards-compatible with Mini DisplayPort-equipped displays as well as adapters that are compatible with Mini DisplayPort (DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI and HDMI).
