How to use old Time Capsule als external disk

I just bought a new 3TB TC. I want to use the old one as an external disk and I also have some files on there I want to use. the new 3TBTC connected nicely, but the old TC on ethernet cable is not recognized by Mac Pro.
How do i connect the old TC to Mac Pro to use as occasional external disk?
thanx
Frank

Factory reset the old TC.. plug it by ethernet into the network.. straight into the new TC is the obvious place.
The Mac should then be able to find it.. if not I can suggest how to do it manually in full isolation from the network.

TM does not work like that.
If you want files to use later.. do not use TM.
Or do not use TM to the same location. Plug a USB drive into the computer and use that as the target for the permanent backup.

  • How to use my time capsule on my new macbook pro retina (time machine error)

    Hello all,
I've been using my old mac for a while with my time capsule, but recently I bought the new macbook pro retina and I wanted to use the time capsule as the backup disk on the new one. However, whenever I try to run the backup, a message appears "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/XXX’s MacBook.sparsebundle” is already in use."
I wanted to override the settings so that the new macbook will use the time capsule for its backup disk instead of the old one, as I will no longer be using it.
I was wondering if anyone had this problem before and if anyone know how I can solve it?
    Thank you

You could delete the old backup from your old laptop? If you need to keep it then you need to rename that folder so that your new macbook can creatie its own file in the same name.

    Ryan

  • How to backup from Time Capsule to external HD?

How to set up files backup from Time Capsule to external HD?
Here is configuration: MacBook + MacAir + Time Capsule (which I use as a storage) + 2Tb WD MyPassport (USB connected to TimeCapsule)
I keep files like photos on TimeCapsule to be available by WiFi and I want to set up my Time Machine to backup picture folder from TimeCapsule to MyPassport HD.

Time Machine can't back up a network volume. You'll have to use third-party software. I don't have a specific recommendation. There is no efficient way at all to back up a Time Capsule, which is why it should only be used as a backup destination, not as a general-purpose file server.

  • Old Time capsule as external hard drive and hub?

I am thinking about purchasing a new AirPort Extreme.  I have an old Time Capsule that I would like to repurpose as an external hard drive attached to the new AirPort Extreme.  Would I still be able to use the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule as a router to provide Internet access to a computer or printer? I am currently using all the ports on the Time Machine (Ethernet and USB) and wonder if I need a hub (Ethernet or USB) to now connect the Time Machine to an Airport Express and still handle all the existing connections or if the Time Machine can act as the hub.

You can just plug the TC in bridge mode into your new Extreme or express.. you swapped terms freely.. Express however has only one LAN port.. and the TC will still need to use one port to connect leaving you 3 WAN ports.
If you buy the Extreme it has 3 LAN ports.. one of which will be used for the connection and so you will add 2 LAN ports for usage on the network.. if that is not enough simply buy a gigabit switch.
BTW if you buy an express it has 100mbit ports not gigabit.. so I do not recommend the express.. you will slow everything down 10x.
You will gain a USB so if 2 is enough you will not need a USB hub.

  • How to use my Time Capsule with my Router?

My Time Warner Cable HS connection uses a specific modem, the Motorola Surfband SBG6580.
I was currently using my Tiem Capsule as my router and just a Cable Modem from Time warner, but this particular service uses this wireless router. I need to get my Apple Time Capsule back into my netowrk.
I would either like to understand how to use the Motorola as a switch or just as a modem so I can use the Time Capsule as my router or vica versa, use my Time Capsule as just a back up drive and leave the Motorola as my rwireless router. The onyly thing about this second configuration is that I need to connect to the Time Capsule wirelessly with one of my computers for back up, the other two are both on an ethernet port hard wired.
So this is what I have to put in place:
    Motorola Wireless Cable Modem
    Time Capsule
    5 Port EasyNet Switch
    iMac Desktop (Ethernet hardwired)
    Macbook (Ethernet hardwired)
MacBook (wirelessly connected to the network)
    Any thoughts great appreciated.
    Henry

It's likely that your ISP will require that the Cable Modem is the first device in the chain. You do need to set the Time Capsule to Bridge mode, disabling the DHCP. Now, the Cable Modem is providing DHCP to devices that connect to it, and devices that connect to the Time Capsule.
You will be able to wirelessly connect to the Time Capsule and network.

  • How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to  connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac.  Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

  • How to use Airport Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive?

I have purchased the Airport Time Capsule 3TB but I really don't need a backup disk, so I want to use it as a wireless hard disk to be used in my network, how can I do this?  Can someone give me a clear step by step guide of how I can do this?
I appreciate your help and support.

There is no difference between using the TC as a backup or as a network disk.
    Mount the disk in finder.
Copy files to it and from it.. in exactly the same way you copy files between disks in a Mac.
As a file store the TC is not good.
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • How do I move time machine backup on filled time capsule to  external disk

TIme machine backups from imac and mbp are currently on 1TB time capsule running out of space.
I want to split the time capsule and move just the imac backups to a new external drive which I want to share with a new macbook air.
The new external drive has been set up with mac OS extended with a GUID partition.
THe instructions  on MAC 101: time machine Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your backups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive tell me to drag "backups.backupdb" to a new drive but I can't find it. I have just upgraded to Lion thinking I would find it now but it is still not there. Is this becaue I have both imac and mbp backups on the TIme capsule?  Here is a screen image of my DATA folder. Desktop  seems to be empty. A search for "backups" finds nothing.
EVen if I found backups.backupdb I am not sure whether I should have the external drive connected to the time capsule or the imac to move this file. It will be kept as an external drive connected to the time capsule so I can use it for both the imac and the macbook air.
And I am not sure whether I first need to set up the new drive as the time machine backup drive on the new macbook air or do it after I move the file.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

oops, I just found how to find backups.backupdb by myself, or at least with help from:

  • How to use airport time capsule with multiple computers?

I'm sure there are some thread about this but i couldn't find it... so sorry for that but hear me out! =)
I bought the AirPort Time Capsule to back up my MBP
    And so i did.
then i thought "let give this one a fresh start" so i erased all of it with the disk utility and re-installed the MBP from the recovery disk.
I dont want all of the stuff i backed up just a few files and some pictures so i brought that back.. so far so good.
Now i want to do a new back up of my MBP so i open time machine settings, pick the drive on the time capsule and then "Choose" i wait for the beck up to begin, and then it fails.  It says (sorry for my bad english, im swedish haha) "the mount /Volume/Data-1/StiflersMBP.sparsebundle is already in use for back up.
    this is what i want:
i want the "StiflersMBP.sparsebundle" to just be so i can get some stuf when i need them. it's never to be erased.
i want to make a new back up of my MBP as if it's a second computer...
so guys and girls, what is the easiest and best solution?
    Best regards!

  • How to use my Time Capsule to share pictures on between Macs

    Hi,
We have two MacBooks at home and a wireless network w. a Time Capsule. We would like to be able to share photos via the Time Capsule. Is this possible and if so how?
    Best wishes,
    Søren

Are you are talking about sharing the photos stored on one MacBook and being viewed by the other MacBook or are you considering storing your photos on the TC HDD. I would not recommend the latter as Time Machine would not be backing up files stored on the TC HDD. This is assuming you are using your TC HDD to store TM backups. If the former, Smokerz recommendation should work fine.

  • How to use my time capsule with windows vista

i have a 2tb time capsule iphone 3gs appple tv and a ipad 2 the wife and kids have iphone 3gs and 4 and id like to set up a home network for us all to use and share music and photos is this possible

Sorry the title never gets into detail at any point.. no vista computer is listed.
Access the vista computer to TC turn on the guest network and allow full read write access. Make sure you have the workgroup set correctly. There are issues sometimes on the windows side but try that.
As for using the TC as a file store.. well it isn't a good idea. It is a backup device.. which has no ability to back up itself. There is no mirrored disks and one day it will die and you can say bye bye to your precious photos and music. You can work your way around the issue.. sure.. in the end you will need an alternative backup on a computer.. that alternative backup will then be backed up to where??
If you must run your itunes and iphoto library on the TC just read about how to set up the libraries in network location. Google will find the posts.

You perhaps should read all the other posts about why not.. as well as how to.

  • How to use the time capsule with my existing router?

Here is my situation. I have Alltel PCD UM185 USB modem for their mobile broadband internet. I have a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router which I plug the usb modem into to share the internet through a wireless network which has WPA security on it. I want to use my 1TB time capsule to backup the computers in my house wirelessly and not as a router. What connection do I need to make and how to do I setup the time capsule this way? I can't figure it out. Thanks for any help in advance. If you need more information just ask.
    Thanks,
    John

Steven's solution will work just fine if you want to connect the Time Capsule using ethernet.
You might also consider configuring the the Time Capsule to "Join" the wireless network. In this type of configuration, backups would occur only over wireless and you could locate the Time Capsule virtually anywhere it can receive a good, strong wireless connection. Important Note...the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled in this type of configuration, so you will not be able to connect using ethernet.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue
Then select the option to "Join a wireless network" and follow the prompts

  • How to use 2 Time Capsules

I currently have 1 TC 1 TB. would like to add a second 2TB. How do i set these up so they don't conflict and my wifi access just one?

OK, thanks. So, we'll need to turn off the wireless on the second Time Capsule (TC) to avoid wireless interference between them.
You'll need 2 ethernet cables to set things up. One of these will be used temporarily just during the setup.
Connect one ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on Time Capsule #1 to the WAN (circle icon) port on Time Capsule #2.
Temporarily, connect another ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on TC #2 to help with configuration.
On your Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab just below the icons to assign a name to the TC, establish a device password (write this down) and adjust Time Zone settings. I would suggest that you assign a different name to this TC than TC #1 to avoid confusion.
    Click the Wireless tab
Click on the Wireless Mode selection box and change this to Off.
Click the Internet icon just above the Summary tab
Connect Using = Ethernet (should already be set this way)
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right of the window and TC #2 will restart. You should get a green light in 20-25 seconds.
That's it for the physical setup and configuration. You can disconnect the temporary ethernet connection from your computer to one of the LAN ports on TC#2.
If you are planning to use Time Machine for backups, you'll need to set up Time Machine on the Mac you want to use and point it at TC #2 for backups to occur on that Time Capsule.
