How To Use PowerMac (DVD) to Load OS Tiger 10.4 to I-Book (CD) ?

Bought retail "family pack" version of Tiger 10.4 last August, but forgot my wife's I-Book is CD only. Waited too long to get exchange CD disks from Apple, confirmed last week they're no longer available thru Apple.
Apple Support advised I could use my PowerMac G4 to upgrade the I-Book, but would not provide specifics since the 90 day period of support on my OS Tiger purchase had already lapsed. If I bought another copy of Tiger they'd be able to walk me through the procedure, but that doesn't seem reasonable to me. They also mentioned purchasing an external DVD and specified a particular Lacie model for $189- but that's more expensive another softeware purchase, and reviews for the exteral DVD were very mixed.
Lastly, they suggested this discussion forum. I searched and found similar inquiries, but they all seem to have too many other variables for me to risk attempting a self repair. Sorry if this terribly redundant for listening experts out there, but would greatly appreciate any help.
My G4 is an older (2000) 400 MHz version with DVD, running OS 10.4.9, my wife's newer (2002) I-Book G3 600 MHz with CD -ROM drive is runing 10.3.9.
I'm competent with simple software upgrades , but a complete novice with networking or linking and subordinating one machine to another. Hope that doesn't dissuade any otherwise willing souls out there.
"Scrappy"

I can't agree that reports of problems means it is iffy -- as long as one takes into account the stipulations I mentioned about the installer disk supporting the target PPC Mac model.
The installation will install the complete set of drivers & other OS components the disk contains, regardless of the model the installation is running under. Only when the targeted Mac boots does the OS check the hardware & load the drivers that support it. Obviously, if the installer disk doesn't have some component the target Mac requires, it won't be there & the process will fail, but AFAIK this only can occur if the targeted Mac was released after the version of the installer disk & the Mac had some new bit of hardware.
What can be slightly problematic is the installer will create various preference files with default values based on the model it is running under rather than the target one. This is generally no more than a minor annoyance with an easy workaround. I don't know of anything like this that would prevent the target Mac from booting -- even if something did, resetting PRAM and/or NVRAM should allow the Mac to boot up in a functional enough state that the offending preference file can be discarded.
I should add that I have actually used this method to install the OS on a G3 iMac that lacked a DVD drive & on a G4 PB with a dead optical drive, using my G5 iMac as the source. The owners encountered no problems at all (& were happy to avoid the downside of having to exchange their DVD for the CD set). The only real downside for them is not having a bootable installer disk to run Disk Utility, Terminal, etc. for repairs. I am helping them deal with that in other ways ... mostly by promising to let them use one of my FireWire drives as a boot source when needed. It has a generic install of 10.4.9 on it & interestingly enough boots all the PPC's I have tried it with without any problems.

How do I get DVD,s loaded on to my iPadmini?

If you're talking about commercially made dvd's, then you can't, not without breaking the CSS encoding, otherwise known as copy protection. Since doing that is against the rules of this forum, none of us can help you with that.
If you're talking about home made family movies, etc, then you need to get that DVD file to mp4 format. Google and you'll find several converters you can use.

  • How to use TCP Checksum Off-load in my network driver

I am seeking infomation on how to use TCP Checksum Off-load to tell the Solaris 8 stack not to handle it for both receives and transmits (and let our NIC handle this compute-intensive task instead).
There is mention that Sun GigabitEthernet Adapter cards, Release 1.1 supports Sol-2.6 use of NIC features: TCP checksum offload & byte swapping
There are limited bits of info in include files. For example
    sys/strick.h indicates use of:
    inetcksum_t's ick_xmit
    stream.h has:
struct datab's unsigned u16:16; /* used to store hw-calculated cksum
    #define STRUIO_IP 0x04 /* IP checksum stored in db_struioun */
    #define STRUIO_ZC 0x08 /* mblk eligible for zero-copy */
    strsub.h has:
    struct zero_copy_kstat
Also /include/inet/tcp.h has tcp_sum for outbound.

    VenK7337,
Could you show your python code. so we know what your are "writing" to the ethernet port?
That way we can see what you are receiving.
Parsing the incoming data (from the TCP-read) depends heavily on the device that sends it, and can not generically be described. LabVIEW has many byte (and even bit) manipulation functions to convert many different data formats to its own build in formats.
So after the TCP listener is connected, you are constantly reading from the established connection (until it gets broken of course). More advanced example would be the internet toolkit if oyu have it.
From the read characters (and I hope you designed a protocol with a clear starting character, ending character and maybe even a build in checksum) you parse the data and perform you action, and of course generate a reply. Again the internet toolkit is a good example. It parsed the input as it comes it, based on the HTTP format. Then generates the reply based on the request received.
These days I would suggest not to use binairy encoded numerics. Try and use XML formatted data. Yes, it causes a lot of overhead. But typically this is not an issue and makes the code a lot more portable and maintainable. Also makes it easier to interface with other languages/platforms.
Umless of course you are looking at Khz data rates, then XML is not th preferred choice.
    Hope this helps...

  • How to use the dvd drive...?

    Hi Guys,
Just bought my new 15" 2.53 Mhz Duo Core MacBook Pro a month ago but until now I haven't figured out how to use the DVD drive. Well I can't seem to find where it is actually... Does all MacBook Pro has dvd drive? Coz when I check back apple's website and look for the same macbook pro specification like my one, it has a dvd drive included so I thought my macbook has it for sure but can't or don't know how to use it... This is my first time to have an apple that's why...
    Hoping for your help..
    Thanks,
    Danny

    Hi there Danny.
I believe you are looking for the location of the DVD drive... right?
If you are looking at your computer while it is open, it should be on the right hand side... "under" the keyboard. There is a slit that allows the DVD to be inserted into the computer. I think if you start to insert a DVD in there (shiney side down) part way, it will suck it into the computer.
(note: I'm not exactly sure, because I use a 7 year old iBook that has a pop-out DVD tray... but I think it will suck it in for you)

  • [U310] How to use recovery DVDs

In windows 8, it is impossible to create recovery DVDs with Lenovo OneKey Recovery 8.0.
The option has been eliminated. WHY?
Now I ordered the DVDs, but I don't know how to use it !! What I did was:
    -  Since U310 has not DVD drive, I create ISO file and burn it to USB drive using UltraISO.
    - BIOS: RAID, Legacy support, boot USB HDD,
But I still get CD/ROM  error while product recovery. Why?
Anyone could help? any other settings needed?
Or the very latest BIOS version of 65CN99WW not support USB HDD image?
thanks in advance for any hints.

    thanks Solid Cruver,
the USB was bootable, and according to your post:
    ‎09-10-2013 05:28 PM
    Inside BIOS
        Under Boot Tab
              Change Boot mode to Legacy
               USB Boot should be enabled
        Under Security
Secure Boot Has to Be disabled
In case the options above are grayed out in your BIOS, Got to Exit Tab and Change OS Optimized Default to Other OS
    and check the options again.
Once All are Set Make sure to save all changed by hitting F10 and enter for Yes
After Hitting enter It will Restart and You have to keep on tapping F12
this should pull up the Boot Menu letting you select where to boot. You should have now your USB Stick as an Option.
The security boot choice can only be found under UEFI boot. But what I need is Boot mode to Legacy, and boot to Legacy first with USB. i.e. if I choose Legacy boot, the security setting will not appear, so I think it will set back to eanabled to prevent other OS installation?
Do I need to choose AHCI and iRST off? Any other tricky things? any priority of the 3 USB ports?

  • I do not know how to use i dvd to burn a disk

I would like to make a copy of some of my dvd movies that I have and I do not know where to start. How do I import the movie to the computer and then burn it to a new disk? Thanks for any help I can get. I am new to mac and it has been a rough change for me. I am having trouble with a few of the features on this computer that were sale point when I bought it.

I would like to make a copy of some of my dvd movies
that I have and I do not know where to start.
iDVD is for creating new DVDs with your digital movie clips from something like iMovie.
iDVD ISN'T a disk copying application.
If the DVDs you have are not commercial copy-protected DVDs you can use Apple's Disk Utility to copy them. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724 How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs
If the DVDs have your home movies on them, and you want to bring them in to iMovie for editing, you can use something like DVDxDV from http://www.dvdxdv.com/DVDxDV.overview.htm to extract the movies from the DVDs.

  • How to use Power Query to load data from a single source into multiple tables

    Hi all,
I have a requirement to load my data into three different data models using Power Query. Is that possible?
My source is a SharePoint survey list, with similar questions like:
    1) Course lecturer - John Doe
1a) The course was useful (rate 1 to 5)
1b) The lecturer displayed good knowledge of topic (rate 1 to 5)
    2) Course Lecturer - Mary Brown
2a) The course was useful (rate 1 to 5)
2b) The lecturer displayed good knowledge of topic (rate 1 to 5)
I would like to split the data into separate data models (one for John Doe; another for Mary Brown), so that I can compare the different lecturers. Other than running separate surveys for each of them, I thought of using Power Query to transform the data.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks.
    Regards
    GM

    Yes, this is possible.
Start with a single query that returns you the data for all lecturers.
Right-click on the "all lecturers" query in the queries pane, and choose Reference, once for each lecturer. This will create a query for each lecturer.
Open the query for each lecturer and filter the data so that only that lecturer's results are visible.
Click "Close & Load To..." for each lecturer's query  to load the data into the data model. This will create a data model table for each lecturer.
If your question is more about how to transform such a survey list into a table that can be easily filtered, please provide an example of how the list shows up in Power Query.

  • How to use recovery dvd on new hard drive, install window 7

hello, i have trouble with my laptop. my hard drive got bad sectors and now i need to replace my hdd to new one. im not sure how to reinstall window 7 on my new hdd.
is it possible to install operating system on new hard drive using recovery disk? and how?

    Hi,
Yes, recovery discs will work on a new hard drive, but it's generally best to ensure that the replacement drive is of the same capacity ( slightly larger is Ok ) as the original - recovery discs can have issue when used on a drive that has a smaller capacity than the original.
When you have replaced the HDD, all you need to do is as follows.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.
    Insert the 1st Recovery Disc.
Select Boot options ( f9 ), use the arrow keys to select the CD/DVD drive and hit enter.  You may also get a prompt to 'Press any key to continue' - do this if asked.
You will be prompted to insert subsequent discs as required.

  • How to use illustrator dvd menu template???

If you create a menu using one of illustrator cs3 templates how do I get it into dvd studio pro as a menu??
    tx..

I was hoping there would be a more integrated meathod... but then again.. so here's the process..
    1) Resize the image in Illustrator.... make sure ALL your layers are visable.(hidden layers will not be selected via a 'select ALL'(huh?) and thus not scaled).. Select All.. Change image size in Illustrator control panel to 1280x720 (for 720p HD.. use your size depending on your format)
    2) change the cropping area to 1280x720, you may also want to change the pixel aspect ratio of the cropping area ruler to 1 since it's incorrectly set at 1.333.. HD uses square pixels...
    3) Export as photoshop (export layers but disable both editability
boxes... with my final image, leaving this checked resulted in a flattened image with no layers!?!? anyhow) use 72dpi, as this appears to export a file the size of the actual resolution specified..
    4) open in photoshop and crop the image (set canvas size) to the propper size. for whatever reason I could not get illustrator to output a 1280x720 image.. it was 1281x721.. If I reduced the crop area to 1279x719 then I got a 1279x719 image..
    5) import into Dvd Studio.. Then create a layered menu.. set it as the background, and then setup your button using the layers for highlight etc...
