How to use rotoscoped layer as mask or track matte

I'm doing some work between a 3d program and after effects cs6.
Is there a way to use a rotoscoped layer as either a mask or a track matte for a different layer?
Have tried it as a luma matte without success.
DO I need to precompose anything?
Thanks for any help.

Don't use a Luma Matte.  Use an Alpha Matte or Alpha Inverted Matte: the difference depends on what you want you want to see and what you don't want to see, and it's dead simple to change.

  • [AI CS4 Mac] How to Create a Layer Clipping Mask?

    Hi Folks,
How does one go about creating a layer clipping mask using the SDK?
What I want to do is to simulate clicking on the "Make/Release Clipping Mask" button (the left-most picture button) that is at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
    Thanks!
    -- Jim

Clipping masks work, but they can be a little clunky (as you might tell from their weird way of being set up). You might find opacity masks more flexible. An opacity mask is basically a group attached to a layer, in which you store paths that represent holes in the mask. These holes have an opacity value for how much shows through. So anything in the mask group is a hole (there can be many) and anything in the layer (as normal) shows through those holes. Setting it up is simpler but it depends on the kind of clipping you're trying to do which is easier. We find it easier when doing knockouts for labels on lines, but clipping paths are also possible, just a little more annoying.

  • Why do layer styles work with track mattes but not stencils?

I'm just wondering what's going on "under the hood."
    -- Jeff

In addition, Track Mattes work only on the single layer above the layer with the Track Matte applied not on 20 layers.
    I never said something else.
I don't agree that a stencil is a group of layers
They are. Stencils operate on comp buffers, mattes on layer buffers. It's simply tech stuff. Accept it as it is. No point in going insane over such minutia. Layer styles are pretty useless most of the time, anyway, due to how they are applied.

  • How to use multiple patterns for masking/format the input text

    Hi All,
I am using Jdeveloper 11.1.1.5 and i have a requirement where i need to format my input Text value in these below patterns:-
    Format
    Example
    AA9A 9AA
    EC1A 1BB
    A9A 9AA
    W1A 1HQ
    A9 9AA
    M1 1AA
    B33 8TH
    A99 9AA
    AA9 9AA
    CR2 6XH
    DN55 1PT
    AA99 9AA
For Example :-  If user puts value as EC1A1BB, it should automatically changed to EC1A 1BB
if user puts value as W1A1HQ, it should be automatically changed to W1A 1HQ and so on..
If it could have been one format , i might have followed this :- https://blogs.oracle.com/jdevotnharvest/entry/get_social_security_numbers_right
But for multiple patterns i am not able to get through to the proper solution.
Is there any way to achieve this ? Please suggest.
    Regards,
    Shah

For the validation you should be able to use one regular expression where you add the logical or (|)  (check the doc http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/util/regex/Pattern.html) between the groups. If none of the patterns matches you have an error.
For the for formatting I'm not sure you can use only one expression.
I suggest to write one method which does the checking on and the formatting may be using an array of patterns to check and iterate the patterns in a loop. Once you found a match you can read the needed format from another array (or an other dimension if you prefer to use a multidimensional array).

  • Use one layer as alpha map (mask) for another - how?

Hi, I do not understand how to do this in Photoshop. In After Effects, which I use a lot, this is easy. For example, I have one layer with transparent, semi transparent an opaque areas. I can then tell AE to use this layer as an alpha channel map for another layer. But how do I do this in Photoshop? I understand how to use a layer mask and draw on the same layer to create treansparent areas. But I want to use a separante layer, or even a separate image.
    I use Photoshop CS 5.

    Hello!
And by "look up", Chris means in the Adobe Community Help application, or in the online help:

I immediately flagged the answer as correct yesterday, but thanks anyway

  • How to use layer masks to separate line art from white background

How to use layermasks to separate line art from white background

Probably better to use Blend modes rather than a layer mask.  Try setting the blend mode of the line art layer to Darken for instance.  If you do want to use a mask, take a look at individual channels, and copy the channel with the best contrast.   Then load the selection  of that copied channel, select the line art layer, and add the layer mask.  You will probably need to invert the mask. You will probably find that the line art is a greyscale image, and need to go to Image > Mode > RGB before you can use Channels.

not that I would know, but what you can do instead is group those 5 layers (CTRL+G), add the adjustment layer as the topmost layer in the group and set the group's blending mode to "normal". The adustment layer is then only applied to the layers within the same group.

  • How can I feather the vector mask (path) of a shape layer in CS6?

How can I feather the vector mask, i.e. path of a shape layer in CS6?
The corresponding slider in the properties pallette is alway grayed out and unmovable for me when dealing with shape layers. Is there a trick to it, or ist it really not possible at all? (In CS5 you can feather any vector mask via the mask pallette, although the mask's behavior is most of the times quiet buggy after doing so.)
Or is there any other way to non-destructably blur a shape in CS6? (I know I can create a smart object and use a blur filter on it, but that's not really what i'm after.)
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
    Reiz

    Start from the beginning
    - Select the Rectangle Tool - go to Options Bar, ensure 'Shape' options is on from the the Pick a Tool Mode drop down list.
    - Draw Rect. This should create a vector Shape Layer.
    - Select it in the Layers Panel: The Properties Panel then should highlight the Density and Feather options.
What happens here when you drag the Feather slider? On my end it feathers the vector shape as a whole.
If you need further masking capabilities, then apply a Layer Mask to the Shape and proceed with the Properties Panel Density/Feather options.

  • How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure?

    Hi guys,
I am editing a map and need my map split into multiple rectangular segments. My map is made up of many layers and sub layers which I need to preserve. When I clipping mask the map with a rectangle all of the map's subs layers merge into one layer. How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure? It seems like a 'layer mask' is the correct tool but doesn't seem like CS6 has it?
    Cheers
    Mat

I avoid sublayers, because they really were never thoroughly developed, and when you open files, you get all your layers flipped open.
So for me paste in front works great for pasting a mask directly above the element you want to mask. Unfortunatley paste in front does not work well with sublayers so you will need to drag the mask down into the the sublayer. But atleast if you have a complex document with many sublayers, the paste in fornt gets you close.
eg; Mask is in clipboard, I select sublayer Illinois
After doing a paste in front, the mask (star shape) is not in the sublayer, but above
Drag the star shape down one in to the sublayer Illinois, select entire sublayer(use radio button right of the layer name)
    and make clip mask

  • How to use the same mask, stencil, etc., for multiple layers? Photoshop equivalent of masked group?

Hi I spent more than half an hour to search manual, forums, and Internet and still can't find the answer. Please help!
For example, in a comp with 5 or more layers I want to use the same mask or stencil or what ever can hide areas of the layers 2,3, and 4 but layer 5 and any other eventual layers below should not be affected.

Pre-compose the layers you want to mask and apply a track matte to the pre-comp using the mask. Think of pre-composing as an equivalent of creating a layer group.
Use Set Matte effect on each of the layers you want to mask. This is easiest to do if you apply set matte once and then create an animation preset to apply to the other layers. Just get set matte to do what you want it to do on the first layer, Select Set matte in the ECW or in the Timeline, then go to Animation>Save animation preset. Then select all of the other layers you want to apply the set matte to and apply the preset.
Put the mask at the bottom of the layers you want to mask and enable the preserve transparency switch, then nest this group in the composition with the other layers.
Here's another tip. You could define a custom color for all of the layers you want to use the matt on, then use the custom color for a group selection. This may make things easier down the line.

  • Is it possible to use a masked layer to mask another layer?

    Hi there,
I'm relatively new to Fireworks after coming from an Illustrator background
I've just started playing with the masking features of Fireworks and wanted to know if it was possible to use a layer that already has a mask applied as a further mask on another layer.
Basically, I have a rounded rectangle that I am using as a canvas to hold a series of vector circles. Circles that fall outside the rectangle are naturally clipped due to the mask.
I then want to use these clipped circles as a mask for a series of photos that also lie within the rounded rectangle.
I suppose I could simply cut up the circles to ensure that they are within the rectangle, but this would not allow me to resize them in future should I want to alter the design.
In Illustrator I could use a clipping mask to achieve the required effect, which would basically clip all the layers beneath, but in Fireworks I'm not sure what to do.
Any ideas or different approaches would be appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Tim

Between the ability to select thumbnails in the Layers panel, and occasional use of Select > Subselect, you've actually got pretty good options for editing a simple mask. Once you start nesting them, though, you'll probably have to ungroup.
The cool thing is, you've got options for nesting masks and working non-destructively. And grouping and ungrouping isn't a big deal, particularly if you remember the shortcuts for it (Command-G and Shift-Command-G). On the other hand, it might be nicer if Fireworks offered the ability to "unfurl" a group or a mask via an arrow, while still seeing the full effect of the mask.
I just tried out my earlier symbol suggestion and realized that while one can apply a mask to a symbol instance, it may not be possible to apply a symbol instance as a mask, which is a bit surprising. (At least, that option seemed to be greyed-out in CS6.) So my earlier idea may just be purely theoretical.

  • I don't know how to use a light layer in After Effects CS4

    Hello,
I work with a lot of texts layers and it's very trendy to put a light layer across the text at one point or another, it looks really good too. But I've looked on the net for tutorials and can't figure out how to use the light layer so that a light goes across a text from one side to the other. It looks like a flash light went across the text. I go to the top and choose >Layer >New >Light.
What happens is the color of the text changes (the part that isn't shined upon). How can I change the settings so that the text color doesn't change? Do you know of any video tutorials to use for a light layer?
       Thank you for your time!!

How can I change the settings so that the text color doesn't change?
That is kind of a paradox. The whole point of using 3D lights is to have them illuminate the layer, including all shading properties. Color is defined by the layer's base color multiplied with light color and intensity. You really need to set your mind into 3D mode. That aside, I wouldn't bother using a light with flat text. Simply create a feathered circle on top (or 2 or 3), set blending mode to add and animate it across your type.

  • How to replace a layer which has a mask applied without affecting the mask?

I have a layer with a photo.  I have animated a mask on this layer, but now the client wants the photo replaced with another one.  When I add a new photo to a new layer and copy the mask properties from the good working layer, the mask winds up in a different place than the original.  I've tried doing a replace footage with the source photo trying to make it the new photo but same results, the mask always gets repositioned.
How can I replace an image on a layer that has an animated mask on it with another one without affecting the mask?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Thanks everyone.  Now that I understand more about Track Mattes it works fine.  I can scale and position new layers under the animated mask.  This helps tremendously
