How to use structure pointer with « Call Library Function node » in LabVIEW

I use GetTimeZoneInformation from kernel32.dll. It definition is :

If creating a wrapper DLL which does the conversion for you is not an option (I think it won't since that would require C programming and if you knew C programming you wouldn't ask this here) then you will have to create a byte array of appropriate length and just configure the Call Library Node to pass this array as an Array of unsigned bytes and as C pointer.
On return you will have to copy out the interesting data at the right position.
First the length of this structure would be:

Now the fun part will be to actually get out the information. There are a number of difficulties.
First the strings are 16 bit Unicode so if you are interested in them you will have to call a different Windows API function WideCharToMultiByte function to convert the 16bit Unicode string into an ASCII string. For this part there has been a post here:

For the LONG values you would pick 4 bytes at the appropriate offset from the array through the Array Subset function and then typecast it into an int32 and pass that through the Swap Bytes and Swap Words functions to reverse the LabVIEW Big Endian byte swapping in the Typecast function.
The SYSTEMTIME is a structure with eight 2 byte integers so it would be best to use Array Subset again to extract 16 bytes at the correct offset, typecast this into a cluster with eight int16 numerics and pass it through Swap Bytes too.
You see accessing such API functions in LabVIEW directly can get easily quite a mess and that is the reason why creating a wrapper DLL to convert properly between LabVIEW datatypes and C datatypes gets soon the easier solution if you need to interface with more than one or two functions taking such complicated data structures.

    I have a client/server application which the client I am trying to develop using Labview.  When I use to communicate the server and the client using the program provided by the manufacter, the system works perfectly.
    Now, I am trying to develop a system using labview, because I need to get another things.
    I have the DLL provided by the manufacter and the .h too, so I can check the functions parameters. One of these functions needs to be called using a struct element. Probably, the function's DLL instantiates the elements of this struct.  I use the call library function node to do it.
    When I receive the data, the function returns to me the struct that I passed as a parameter before, and then I can read all the elements of the struct, except the string element that returns nothing. The struct elements that are numerical, I can read them perfectly.
    Another thing that is important to say, is that the string data was not returned in fact by the DLL function that the system calls. I have to pass a pointer (I use it as unsigned 16 in Labview, but I tried before as string and unsigned 8) as a parameter, and this pointer will point to the memory location that the string is. When I try to read what is returned by the function, I can read nothing. The same function returns that the size of data that is returning is 17 bytes.
    How can I solve it?

    Did you take a look at the example that ships with LabVIEW that shows how to do all sorts of data passing to DLLs. I believe your situation is one of the examples listed. You can find the example VI in the "<LabVIEW install directory>\examples\dll\data passing" directory.

    If I wire a Call Library Function Node with an ErrorIn and an ErrorOut, the VI Analyzer Test "Wire under Object" fails always with two occurrences per Call Library Function Node.
    A double click to the occurrence highlights the error lines connected with the call... node.
    The test does not fail, if the error lines are not connected.

    This became a problem when Call Library Nodes got error terminals (and optional path terminals) in LabVIEW 8.20.  I should be able to get a fix in to VI Analyzer Toolkit 2010.

    The thing in the description that leads me to believe they execute asynchronously is that you can configure the library to run as a multi-threaded operation.
    Please take a look here to see the difference between synchronous and asynchronous execution.
    Since the code even has the ability to be multi-threaded, you can consider it as running in parallel to your other code.
    Any data returned is passed to the thread that called that function.

  • Is a call library function node in LabView 8.6 synchronous or asynchronous?

    I tried setting a sub-VI with a call library function node in it to "subroutine" execution status.  The error list indicated that the Call Library Function node in the block diagram was an asynchronous node.  The LabView on-line help content indicates
    "...CINs and shared libraries execute synchronously, so LabVIEW cannot use the execution thread used by these objects for any other tasks. "
    Does anyone know for sure what the status of a Call Library Function is?  Does it depend upon the specific code in the DLL being called?

  • Crash "DAbort 0x37C03D in MemoryMana​ger.cpp" when calling DLL with "Call Library Function Node"

    Hi all,
    I would like to work with a LabVIEW program that I did not programm by myself.
    In this programm an external DLL needs to be called. in the Momente this dll ist called with the "Call Library Dunction Node" LabVIEW crashes with this Error Message:
    DAbort 0x37C03D in MemoryManager.cpp
    Attached is the entire Log.
    The programm runs on the computer of the original programer.
    I have never handeled with DLLs or something like that before, so I have absolutely no idea how to rsolve this problem.

    A DLL can be compiled by different compilers. By "generic" C DLL, i refer to ANSI C (so no C++, no Borland C or something else).
    My question is raised as parameters, esp. arrays and strings, can lead to this behavior when used in the wrong way (including "Calling Convention").
    Also, interfacing with the LV memory manager can lead to crashes like this, but this wouldn't be a "generic" DLL as it binds to LV (due to LV API calls).
    Without a better knowledge on the DLL and its functions, there is not much we can help you with.

    I'm looking for some description/help regarding how to pass 'enum' to a call library function node.
    The API documentation that I have states something like this:

    The above is one of the input parameters to my call library function node. Hint to some documentation/example VI should be enough.

    An enum requires sequential values, so you wouldn't be able to enter an arbitrary value for each of the enumeration items. You can still use an enum, but you would need a small "accessor" VI that converts the enum to a number. I do this often, as I prefer enums. You can, however, use a ring constant which allows you to enter your own values for each of the labels. With a ring constant you can enter the value based on a format you've selected. By default the format is "Automatic", which means you enter a decimal value. If you right-click on the ring constant and select "Format & Precision" you can change it "Hexadecimal". Then, in the "Edit Items" tab you can enter a hex value in the "Values" column. So, you would have a row that has "ANY" in the "Items" column and "3F" in the "Values" column. This is only if you prefer to see the values in hex.
    Tip: You should make this into a typedef.
    Note: The values for each of the constants are not 0, 1, 3, but rather 1, 2, 4, 8, etc...

    Hello all.
    I am writing a LabVIEW wrapper for an existing DLL function.
    The function has, as one of its parameters, an array of structs.  The struct is very simple, containing two integers.  I am using the call library function node to access it.
    In Labview I created an array of clusters, where the cluster has two 32-bit integers as its members.  So far, so good.
    Now I have to pass this in to the Call Library Function Node.  Here I am running into trouble.
    I have used The topic in LAVA and The topic in the knowledge base as my primary sources of information, though I have read a bunch of forum topics on the subject too.
    I do understand that I could write a new function which takes as a parameter a struct with the size as the first member and an array as the second, and I might just do this and have it call the regular function, but I was hoping to do it more simply.
    According to the C file which LabVIEW generates for me from the CLFN when I choose "Adapt to Type" and "Array Data Pointer", the prototype it is expecting is:

    If I cast data to the pointer-to-pointer I get when I generate c code by wiring my struct to a CIN and generating, then I seem to get what I expect. But this seems to work when I choose "pointers to handles" too, and I would expect array data pointer to give a different result.
    Is there any way to get this to work directly, or will I have to create a wrapper?  (I am currently using LabVIEW 2011, but we have customers using 2009 and 2012, if not other versions as well).

     As you can see, I added a temporary diagnostic with the structures that were created in the "Handles by value" case, and print out the data.  I see what is expected, whichever of the options I pick in the CLN!  
    I understood (from the information in the two links I mentioned in my original post, and from the name of the option itself) that "array data pointer" should pass the array of data itself, without the dimSize field.  But that does not seem to be what is happening.

  • Using an external DLL with "Call Library Function"

    I am trying to use an external DLL which is used from Visualbasic & Delphi:

    the protKEB.dll accesses the serial port to control an KEB frequency
    inverter.
    Unfortunatly there is no prototype header file for the DLL (no help on that
    from KEB).
    I only have a VisualBasic example program which works with the DLL.
    (Unfortunatly I am no Visual basic expert)
    To initialize the com port I have to use the function: setprotproperties &
    getprotproperties
    they are declared as:

    LabVIEW cannot call a DLL that has structures directly, you will need to create either a wrapper DLL or CIN that will take in all of the data individually construct the structure, and send it to the DLL function.
    For more information on what a cluster looks like in native code, I would suggest creating a simple cluster, creating a Call Library Function Node on the block diagram with a cluster input. Then right-click on the Call Library Function Node and choose "Create .c file". This will generate the data structure for the cluster and give you a better feel for it. I would then suggest going to the Using External Code in LabVIEW manual that can be found in the LabVIEW Bookshelf (Start»Programs»National Instruments»LabVIEW 6»LabVIEW Manuals or »LabV
    IEW 6.1»Search the LaBVIEW Bookshelf).

  • Using Call Library Function Node To Return C++ Structure Informatio​n

    Hi everyone.  This question is for all you LabVIEW gurus out there.
    I am trying to call a function from a .dll to get information from a structure about a device (FT232H chip).  I am using the "Call Library Function Node" to do this in LabVIEW.  My issue is I do not know how to set up the "Call LIbrary Function Node" parameter for a C++ structure.  How do I set up the pointer to FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE structure using the "Call Library Function Node" so that I can read back the device information?
    The details of the C++ function and the structure are below.

    I tried to set up the "Call Library Function Node (CLFN)" correctly in order to read out Device Information from a FTDI Chip (FT232H) but when I run the VI LabVIEW crashes on me always.
    I have attached the code.  For the FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE structure I passed into the "CLFN" a constant cluster of all the structure elements and then I set up the node to:
    Type: Adapt to Type
    Data format: Handles by Value
    I think LabVIEW crash may have something to do with the fact that the output of the dll function is using a pointer to a structure.  With the Handles by value Data format I am unable to set the Pointer to structure.
    Can you please take a quick look at the code to see if I am setting the CLFN up correctly?

    I am trying to call a fuction from a SDK.dll library using the Call Library Function Node. The SDK was provided to
    me and I do not have the source code, just the .dll and .h files.
    The SdkSetPropertyEventHandler function has a callback fuction as one of its parameters. How do I implement the
    callback using the CLF node? I am a good LabView programmer but this is my first time using the Call Library
    Function Node. I have read all the info I can find on NI's web site and the discussion board but cannot figure
    this one out. I am using LabView 8.6.
    The SDK.h deacribes the function as:

    Basically you do not do that. LabVIEW does not know pointers and certainly not function pointers. What you should do instead is writing a C DLL that implements the callback and also exports a function to be called by LabVIEW that translates between the callback and a LabVIEW user event. Look for PostLVUserEvent() here on the NI site to find examples how to do that.

    The pageDef in app B must have an entry for the method in order to access it. Just adding the adfjar isn't enough.
    You need to go the bindings of the page in app B and add the method you want to access. Once the method is added you can access using the following code:
    BindingContainer bindings = getBindings();
    OperationBinding operationBinding = bindings.getOperationBinding("getWeatherbyCityName");
    Map map =operationBinding.getParamsMap();
    map.put("theCityName", "Tokyo");
    operationBinding.execute();
    This should work.

    The char *Command[], char *Type[], char *Value[] parameters are parameters that you can not create with LabVIEW. This are arrays of strings and and LabVIEW has a completely different idea about how to place strings and arrays in memory than what is used in C.
    And while LabVIEW supports translation of the top level type to C compatible pointers it does not have any option to let you configure it to translate embedded elements in parameters (the strings in the array) to be translated too.
    But to be honest what you seem want to do is read in a file, do some parsing and then return parameters taken out of that file. Doing that all in LabVIEW would be SOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier.

          I am calling a special function in the dll using call library function node. There is a input parameter that it is a enum type in this function. I don't know how to deal this parameter for calling this function.Has anybody solved this problem?Please advise!

    Most of the times an enum is just a U8/U16/U32, internally so probably you can call it with just a U8/U16/U32 or something. For the correct value you have to look at the definition.
