How to Use Time Capsule to Backup Three Computers?

Hello,
I just unwrapped my new Time Capsule today, and am starting to set it up. I did all the AirPort Utility stuff, and the Wi-Fi is working great. I now know how to set up Time Machine on my computer, but I need to know how to get Time Machine on three computers. I don't know if I have to partition or what, so may I have instructions please? Thank you!
C h r i s t o p h

Oh that's an easy one. Simply install the TimeCapsule software onto each of the computers you plan to back up. Once installed, you will be able to use the same set-up from your computer, select the Airport Extreme Time Capsule, and begin the back up.
Time Capsule will create an individual data file for each of the computers backing up to it. My only advice (you probably already know this) is to do your first back-up using an Ethernet cable. You are good to go from there.

  • How to use time capsule for wireless back-up but not internet?

    Hello,
I have a tower and recently a laptop at work. The tower is connected to our local network with an ethernet cable and the laptop with wireless. So, the internet connection is fine for both.
I was hoping to use my time capsule to do time machine backups on my laptop. Do you have any advice on how to configure this? I do not want to use the time capsule to extend my Internet, as I believe my work I.T. would prefer to handle all access to their  network.
Perhaps there is some documentation about doing this that you could point me to? I have not been able to find it.
    Thank you for your help.

Your original question was How to use Time Capsule for wireless back-up but not Internet?
There is no reason for you to connect the tower....or anything else...using Ethernet if your goal remains that same as you stated.
If you are asking if you can backup the Tower using Ethernet, and not wireless, then you can connect the tower to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule....not the WAN port.
Yes, it appears to work without plugging into my tower.
    Correct, it will work.
I just have to select the network that it created. Of course, I have no access to the Internet while this is happening and it can not auto backup, unless I am on that wireless signal.
As I stated, that is the downside to trying to back up without an Internet connection.  You have to establish another network...and backup over that network.
If you are asking if you can stay connected to the work network while also backing up to your non-Internet "private" network, that is not possible.

Get a vpn router.. I have no idea where you are in the world but you can find reasonable stuff for not too much money or even a general router that takes third party firmware like dd-wrt can run openvpn.
Set up the vpn router in place of the TC, as the main router in the network. Simply bridge the TC and place it behind the router. It will be accessible as part of the network via the vpn.
This is the only safe way to do it via windows.

If you google around I have seen posts about how to access TC by port forwarding SMB on the TC.. using a different port.. To me this is going to slow down the hackers by a day or two.. then they will discover the open port and access your network.. not just the TC.. they now have SMB access to everything. Don't do it. There is very little security on SMB.

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.

  • Using Time Capsule to backup a small office network

    Hi all,
I am hoping somebody may be able to tell me if this is a good plan or not. I have been really struggling to find a good network backup solution. I've been trying to make a Lacie Ethernet Disc Mini work but have finally given up on that one.
I am trying to find a simple solution to backup a network of 5 macs. 1 is currently plugged straight into my router, another router port extends to switch in another building which has 4 further macs along with other network devices connected. Crucially, there is no wireless access from this building to the router.
Would all macs backup to the Time Capsule, including those that are wired via the switch? If so, at what speed? I have heard suggestions that it can be a very slow process?
I'm not worried about any kind of streaming - purely a good backup device.
    All advice very gratefully received,
    Regards
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
I have a small business and chose to use Time Capsule as a backup for my company's network. We have 12 workstations and use all Macs, some wireless and some not. I'm an experienced Mac sys admin and have setup many networks, including designing and installing the network we currently have, which is driven by a Leopard Server.
Based on a year of experience working with Apple's newest airport extreme and capsule products, I would not use them in business and am moving towards a wireless network hd using Carbon Copy Cloner as my software. This is due in part to numerous calls to Apple for support on these items, having to reset them dozens of times, and being told by Apple support that using these products for business is not recommended.
Carbon Copy Cloner is a great tool for a backup, especially for workstations, as you can create partitions for each computer on your HD and CCC will create *bootable* backups of your HD - a great lifesaver if a computer fails and you don't have time to reinstall everything.
I will be putting the capsule and extreme devices on Craigslist for sale and hope to recoup enough to get the wireless network drive, which my research shows is the best way to get network backup solutions for small business.
    I hope this helps.

  • Possible to simultaneously use time capsule for backup + another router for internet?

I will soon be moving into an apartment in which my landlord provides wireless internet through her own router.
I also have my own Time Capsule, which I'd like to continue to use to back up my Mac via Time Machine.
Is it possible to connect to both my Time Capsule (for backup only) and another router (for internet only) at the same time?
If not, can anyone suggest a good workaround?

    moskovit wrote:
I've done a little research, and it looks like I might be able to wirelessly daisy chain the two routers, using WDS (wireless distribution system), assuming my landlord's router supports it, but that this would drop the speed of the internet significantly: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2623802?start=0&tstart=0
It works extremely poorly and the landlord would need to agree to it.. plus it would require use of WEP security which is hackable by children with internet hack kits in about 2min flat. Don't go there. Apple have made their products incompatible with most other routers. So any suggestion of a workaround will involve spending some money on your part.
You could buy a airport express and plug that into the main router by ethernet.. again if allowed. Your TC can do wireless bridge to another apple product very well. Messy but could work. It is not that expensive to get a second hand AEBS and use that. You don't need the latest products but wireless range would be better in the AEBS than AE.
So I'm still wondering: Is there another workaround?  Is there a way to get my mac to connect to my time capsule (for backup) and another router (for internet) simultaneously, or is that just technologically impossible?  If it's impossible, is there another solution?
You cannot wirelessly connect to two different wireless devices at once on one client. You need to either have a second wireless client in the laptop.. for instance a USB stick which can be fairly tiny nowadays. It is just you need to find one with Mac drivers. Or the TC must have internet connectivity. You could get that by buying a wireless bridge, and using that in your room, with the TC plugged into it. Universal wireless bridge devices are fairly cheap, but can be a pain to setup. Look for products that work with the main router and use as fast a speed as possible. It can be a tricky setup as you need the wireless bridge working on one channel and the TC working on another. What I am suggesting is the WDS solution you found but using two different boxes to do it. And not using WDS at all, unless the main router is suitable, but rather universal bridge.
The hassle of all that suggests to me,, I would go for the wireless stick, so your Mac laptop has two wireless clients.

I have no idea if this works just to show you what I mean. Please do research it yourself.
An ethernet connection to the TC is far superior solution albeit would require you to plug and unplug it.

  • How to use Time Machine to backup a disk image

I have my iPhoto libray in a disk image in the shared folder so that it can be shared by two user accounts.  Is there a way to use Time Machine to backup the mounted image?  I don't want to backup the entire disk image file every time there is a change in iPhoto (over 200GB!).  I'd like to just backup the changes, but so far, it doesn't seem to work?

There is no way to back up a mounted, writable disk image with Time Machine. If you want to keep data on a disk image, the best option is to convert it to a sparsebundle, which consists of many small files instead of one big file. It will be backed up much more efficiently, but only when not mounted.

  • How to monitor Time Capsules that backup multiple laptops?

    Hello,
I have two 3Tb Time Capsules that backup 3 laptops each. Those laptops travel and are not always plugged into our network. I'd like to have a way to know if a laptop hasn't been backuped since n days.
Is there a way to do that?
Can Remote Desktop be of any help for that?
    Thanks for your help!

You could write a script that looks at the directory in Time Capsule and see what the last updated file for each Mac's folder is.
If this is a business setup and you start to run out of Time Capsule space you may want to look at a NAS and moving Time Machine backups to that instead of Time Capsule.
You could then easily see the access logins for the backups as well as get encrypted backups, ability to recover if the backup drive fails, etc.

  • How can I use Time Capsule for backups and an external hard drive?

I have a large file/program on my iMacs hard drive that is 62GB and I would like to keep only things I need on my iMac. I have a 2tb time capsule currently used for backing up. It has roughly 1.66 TB free. How can I move the 62GB program onto my Time Capsule and still use it for backups? Also, is this stable? And don't worry about backing the program up because it came on 8DVD discs.
    Thanks.

    1. Mount the Time Capsule as a drive and drag the application over to it. If the application requires system components, those won't be transferred; if those are only data files, you may be able to drag them over as well and then create a symlink or alias to a folder enclosing their current location.
    2. The application may work slowly if this is done. Note that Time Machine will eventually use up all the free space on the Time Capsule that isn't reserved by being allocated to a disk image.

  • How do I use Time Capsule for backup only over an existing network (or ethernet)

Ok, first, I have been using Mac now for about 2 years and every little thing I do is much harder than advertised. I have yet to experience the mythical ease of Apple products.
With that said, I was talked into buying this 2TB Time Capsule. Which right now seems to serve nicely as a very expensive paper weight.
Here's what I am trying to do. I was told I could use this as a wireless backup. I have a cable modem and router in my house. I do not want to insert Time Capsule as the router. I would like to either hook it up to the existing network or have it just wireless. Whatever works best for backup use.
I set the time capsule up to connect to an existing network. Which it did. Green light is on.
When I select it as a backup drive in Time Machine, it works. However it does not back up. It will say Waiting to Backup and do nothing. If I select Back Up Now on Time Machine, it says it cannot find the disk.
Is it possibly because I had used another backup disk prior and kept it? When I set the Time Capsule I selected to use both.
I am at a loss. I am not a techie. And there are more options of use than the instructions cover.

The problem is your method of connection I suspect.
The TC was always designed to plug into the main router. It does not have to be in the same room but it has to be ethernet connected.
Please post a few screenshots of the setup.. that makes it so much easier for me to work through it with you.
Posting screenshots here is easy.. press the little camera and select the shot from finder.
What I need is the summary page from your airport utility.. ie this one.
Then click on edit button which I have highlighted and show me the tabs for Internet, Network and wireless. eg this is the internet. (show me the whole thing.. I have cut it off to keep it small).
We can then work through the issues.

  • Using Time Capsule for Backup Drives, Storage, and an iTunes Server?

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule to accompany my Macbook. The Time Capsule connects to my household's existing wifi network and is not connected by a cord to my computer. I went through a great deal of difficulty setting it up, but now it's time to start using it. I just canceled my off-site backup service, so I really need and appreciate your help and advice.
I want my Time Capsule to perform a few different tasks:
    1) Time Machine backups for TWO different user accounts on my Macbook
    2) Additional file storage
    3) iTunes server
Is this possible? If so, how would I accomplish it?

    1) Time Machine backups for TWO different user accounts on my Macbook
Time Machine backs up the ENTIRE hard drive. It is not user dependent.
    2) Additional file storage
    Yes
    3) iTunes server
You can use it to store your iTunes library. However iTunes will need to run on your MacBook to play the music.

  • Using Time Capsule to backup Laptop?

I use a Macbook Pro laptop and back up to TIme Capsule. I travel frequently, and there is always a problem when I return to resume backups.
I get a message "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup... This backup is too large for the backup disk..."
I only get this message when I am returning from travel.
How do I configure to continue backing up where it left off?
I have tried to restart both the Time Capsule and the laptop repeatedly, but this did not help.

Something is making it do a complete scan -- comparing everything on your Mac to the backups.   Looks like this is the 3rd time, as there were 2 failed attempts earlier (see below).
Found 866732 files (258.03 GB) needing backup
That must be nearly everything on your system.  So it either thinks you have a different disk, or everything on it changed.
That's unusual without something else having happened.
Try a "full reset" per #A4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  If it has lost track of some things, that should make it refresh it's memory.
Since it won't ever delete your last remaining backup, there just isn't enough room for it, plus a new one, plus workspace.

Those are the leftovers from two previous failures, in the .inProgress package.
    Another thought:
Your 500 GB Time Capsule is beginning to get "a little long in the tooth."  That size was discontinued in July of 2009, so has to be nearly 4 years old, maybe older (the first ones were released in February of 2008).  They don't last forever.  Usually the HD fails first, often at 3-4 years old.  When it does, Apple won't replace the HD, but some services can, with a larger one.
Perhaps a better solution for you now would be to get a larger external USB drive, connect it to the TC, and back up to it, instead of the internal HD.

  • How to use time capsule as hard drive and connect with existing net gear router

I have a netgear D6300 router, which i use to connect to internet - which is excellent so far for my downloads and games etc for my PS4 and hence am keen to continue using it. I bought the Airport time capsule for wireless storage, and when i set it up, I was advised on setup to connect the TC to my router, and it did what it needed to do.
Now, in order to connect to internet, i need to connect wifi to net gear router, but to access time capsule, i need to change wifi connection to my newly created wifi network with TC.
I want to use TC as a backup storage for my mac (its a 3TB TC), but also, my laptop has only 500gb hard drive which is now half full from downloads, so i want to transfer all my downloads to my TC and use it as an external hard drive, and future downloads to TC - but when i connect to wifi of TC, i can copy my folder on my mac, but not paste it to TC in finder. (the only thing in TC is an image of tmg of my macbook from first backup.).
How do i use TC as an external HD - there wasn't much difference in price of external wifi/wireless HD between non-TC and TC at 3gb, so i just thought i'd go for the airport TC option.
And is it possible to keep connected to wifi internet via net gear router, AND wifi TC - the whole point i bought it (from US shipped to australia on eBay, therefore not able to send back) was to use TC as external large HD via wifi, but keep my net gear router going.
Surely there is a way to not having to flick between wifi connections of TC and net gear internet.
When i'm connected to TC, i can't access internet, only TC.
And I don't really want to connect TC to my router via ethernet cable, as too many cables.
This can't be a difficult situation to manage, but i'm not sure how to do it.
    Thanks

And I don't really want to connect TC to my router via ethernet cable, as too many cables.
Sorry but you have very little choice.
The TC can join to a wireless network.. but it is flakey, poor, slow and highly NOT recommended way to do things.
Nevertheless if you want to give it a try .. here is the method.
How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?
You SHOULD, plug the TC into the Netgear and run it in bridge mode.. you set the wireless to create a wireless network.. then when you connect to the TC it will be also connected to the internet and fast.
(if you don't do that you may as well have used a USB drive plugged into the Netgear, as it would be just as good).
TC is not actually designed for mixing Time Machine backups and files.. but if you are just storing downloads that is ok.. but I strongly recommend you use a DMG or sparsebundle to prevent the TM and the data from messing each other.

  • How to use time capsule as an external wireless hard drive?

I have the latest version of time capsule and would like to use it not only for backups but also to save some files that I don't want to keep in my Macbook Air, which is very limited in terms of storage. Is it possible?

    Here is my general list.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
