How to use VPN

I need to start using VPN to access a company networked web based app. This is the first time I have tried it, so I really don't have much of an idea on how the whole concept works.
Can someone give me the basics? Where do I begin? I have an address 208.xxx.xxx.xxx, and a password....now what?

To connect to a VPN:
Open Internet Connect, located in the Applications folder.
Click the VPN icon in the toolbar.
Choose the type of VPN connection, either "L2TP over IPSec" or PPTP.
Choose a configuration from the Connect pop-up menu, then click Connect.
To create a second VPN configuration, choose File > New VPN Connection.

In short it wraps your traffic in to an encrypted link to a server (normally on the internet). Then the traffic leaves that server & goes onto the public internet. It is possible for the link to reveal information about you, but a VPN can protect you on open wifi or on bad networks etc.
Sometimes the VPN terminates inside a corporate network, so users can do work at home securely.
It is similar to using https for web browsing (secure http makes traffic difficult to intercept & read).

I just updated my iphone 4s and ipad3 to iOs6. It needs some upgrades. I am English, living in China with an English account:
1 - No Satellite view outside of China. Only can see China in the middle of the ocean. Same problem when using VPN.
2 - No 3D button. 3D button appears some times when using a VPN.
3 - No 3D buildings anywhere like in New York (when 3D can be used using VPN). All are flat.
4 - Flyover of course cannot be activated as no satellite views yet.

If you issue the command "show crypto ikev1 sa" command and all you see is the below (I would suggest taking the output multiple times while testing to see if it always shows this, but I suspect it will show the same)

Then this likely means that the remote end is not properly configured or you are possibly using the wrong peer IP address in your L2L VPN configurations.
I would also confirm that you have gotten the correct public IP address for the remote sites VPN device and also confirm that there is no device on your side that would prevent the VPN negotiation from taking place. Perhaps some device in front of the ASA that does firewalling also?
In the above message the "MM_WAIT_MSG2" basically means that your device has initiated the negotiation by sending the first message of the negotiation and is still waiting for second message (reply) from the remote device.
I have configured a L2L VPN once for a customer and the remote end was Azure. To be honest I have no real idea what Azure is but to my undertanding its not really the conventional networking device thats sole purpose would be firewalling or VPN. We also had problems configuring the L2L VPN but it was not really clear what caused the problems there.

How Secure is VPN Client on IPad That's Also Being Used As a Hotspot?

We are looking at allowing iPads to be used as personal hotspots for our field staff instead of MiFis. Our iPads have access to connect via a VPN connection. One of our tests was to connect to the VPN on the iPad and then connect a laptop to the hotspot. It appears that the VPN connection on the iPad is safe and isolated from the newly connected laptop but we would like confirmation as to how secure the VPN connection is on the iPad from the laptop?

My recommendation , if you want to add extra-security to your VPN is to use certificate authentication with the IPAD.

If it's not available in your region that statement would be correct. VPN is not supported

How do I use VPN for file sharing?

Hi folks, hope you can help.
I need to find a method for file sharing between my company's two offices, which are not only in different countries but also use both PCs and Macs. I think setting up a VPN is the way forward.
My file server is a Mac Mini running the standard client version of OS 10.5.4, with a static IP, 217.xxx.xxx.xxx. I need the PCs and Macs to access its resources. It is set up to share its files using FTP, AFP and SMB. It is running the application iVPN Server, which I understand is a GUI that makes the built-in OS X VPN Server function available to the client edition of OS X.
I am currently overseas and can connect to the Mac Mini over VPN. The problem is that I cannot seem to access the Mac Mini's files - I don't know what to do having established the VPN connection. I was half-expecting it to show up in the Finder under Shared or something.
The Mac Mini has a local IP of 10.0.1.20, but the VPN Server is issuing an IP to all clients in the range 192.168.2.200 and beyond. Is this where I'm going wrong?
Should the Mac Mini VPN Server also connect to itself, using VPN, as a client?
I'm really stuck, all help is very much appreciated. Thank you!

I am familiar with the Connect to Server window, but I am not sure which IP I should be using. Assuming no VPN connection for the moment, and assuming I'm on a remote network, I can connect to the User's documents folder on the Mac Mini already by typing afp://[username:password]@[static WAN ip]/Documents
However, I need to ensure that SMB shares work (I know they work when I'm on the local network). So I type smb://[username:password]@[static WAN ip]/Documents but this fails to connect to the User's Documents folder.
To make the SMB shares work I think I have to connect using VPN. So I connect to the Mac Mini via VPN, and my laptop is issued a VPN IP of 192.168.2.200. Of course my laptop also has an IP from my local network. Do I need to rearrange my network order in System Preferences?
So I'm now connected via VPN. However to view the Mac Mini's files, surely it also needs to have an IP issued by the VPN Server? But the Mac Mini is the VPN server. So should I go into its System Preferences and set up a VPN connection to itself?
Now back on the laptop and I want to browse User's Documents folder on the Mac Mini using SMB. I go Connect to Server, and I guess I would type smb://[username:password]@[Mac Mini's VPN IP]/Documents

How do I save changes to a document using VPN, Safari and Excel Mac?

Hi. I'm using VPN to reach documents on a server. I want to make changes to an excel document and save the changes back to the server. I'm using Safari and Excel Mac. When I'm finish making changes I tried to save the document back to the server. The changes was not saved? When I tried it on a PC it works well. Why can't I save the changes? I did this after I wrote this. I have looked at the documentation but I can't find what I am looking for. Is there another way to open a file for viewing that has the full capabilities or using the normal program...one that uses something besides AxAcroPDFLib.AxAcroPDF. The sample that did have a view used AxAcroPDFLib.AxAcroPDF so it wasn't helpful. All I need is normal program functionality of adobe standard or profession within the application. The users have a full version installed on their PC.

Why not pop IE when using VPN

I use VPN to link a server machine in the OAF(JDeveloper 10).
But I run the HelloWorldPG.xml, +there are no IE page to pop to display.
And then throw a error message (connection timed out) in the consoles.
In the meantime, I have set "Specify Host Name" to VPN IP in the Embedded OC4J Server Perferences.
What's the reason, and how to solute it, Ths.

Sometimes the connection is very slow over VPN and hence connection times our before the Page is launched. Following are some of the options which could be explored:
* If the myclass file is already there, system would not recompile all the data and go directly to OC4J server initialization. At times this is enough.
* If step 1 is not enough, you can try logging into a system where the VPN is fast (through remote login) and then run the program there.
* This option is to find another instance in your local network and deploy the finalzied code in the final environment.

Please contact the developer. Some ERP's write Mac clients. Some require you to run the Windows client in Parallels. The software we used had a lame Mac client, missing about 80% of the features I needed (like running gross profit reports by product line...really lame). So, I just ran the client in Parallels desktop. I could run a VPN connection from my Mac to our server if I was out of the office, and Parallels picked it up, and told the ERP client that it was a secure connection. Worked well. Our IT guy was able to set it up without too much assistance from the software developer, who charged $100/hour for these things.

Hi,I found some user still connected the VPN evenif they dose not use the VPN resouse.
I try to set a "idle timeout" for the VPN configuration.
We use PIX515 8.0.3 and CISCO ACS 4.2 for the VPN's connection and authentication,and the user use cisco vpn client for the connection.
I have tried many methods,but all failured.
First,I configed "vpn-idel-timeout 5" on PIX.It can not worked.
so,I add Radius(CISCO VPN 3000/ASA/PIX 7.0+) attribute "[026/3076/050] Authenticated-User-Idle-Timeout" on CISCO ACS,It still not worked.
And I also add IETF RADIUS Attributes "[028] Idle-Timeout" on group setting on ACS,it always not worked.
i found in vpn client's statistics,it always has some byte sended or received, i thought it maybe IPsec keepalive message or Radius message.
This maybe the reason because the PIX or ACS think the vpn user is keep working.
Can someone tell me how to make a "idle time out"?

Hi,
The VPN Pool could be pretty much any network/subnet.
The amount of routing hops on the LAN network doesnt really matter. The ASA should have a route for the LAN network so it can forward the VPN user traffic there. The return traffic from the LAN to the VPN user should be forwarded with the default route of the network devices. If your default route isnt pointing to this ASA then you naturally need to add a route for the VPN Pool on your LAN devices.
Though I am not sure I have understood your question completely.

How to use CSM Variable DEST_UNREACHABLE_MASK

We have some VPN customers complaining accessing SAP via the CSM. Direct access to the servers works fine. Based on the situation we think that the CSM is not passing on ICMP Unreachables (RFC 792) from the firewalls to the servers so that MSS can be lowered.
I think the variable DEST_UNREACHABLE_MASK can help solve this issue but I don't know how to use it to allow ICMP Unreachables to the servers.

By default the CSM does allow all unreachable messages.
This is what you should see :
gdufour-cat6k-2#sho mod csm 3 var | i DEST
DEST_UNREACHABLE_MASK 0xffff
If you do not have 0xffff, then it means you changed the default and should reset back to the default.
Regarding your primary issue, I would recommend a sniffer trace of the CSM portchannel and see why the vpn connection fails.

Could not connect to ESS when using vpn or remote connection to network.

Our users could not connect directly to ESS when they are using vpn or dial-up. The ESS link would ask for user id and password. There is no problem when they are directly connected to the office network. The ESS page will display directly when they click on it. It will not ask for user id and password. We are using Single Sign-On.

I have solved the problem.
The problem was solved by including the url of our server in the exception list of the IE proxy settings of VPN.
