How to utilize old EPS files?

I have old encapsulated postscript files that I thought were eternal, and I can't open them for viewing or inserting into documents.
What to try next?
- mostly old Illustrator and Photoshop sourced, backed up as EPS when created, not saved as photoshop or illustrator formats under pre-X OS
- don't own any Adobe graphics software to experiment with
- Preview open presents postscript-to-pdf conversion error
- viewing works with <%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0> in Preview (from Illustrator 6) but not the older header <%!PS-Adobe-3.0> (from Illustrator 3.2)
- can't insert <%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0> into Pages, but works into MSWord;  didn't test printing it at this point but eps preview was intact
- tacking version <EPSF-3.0> onto the older header doesn't help
- file extension changes don't help:  <.ps>, <.eps>, <.epsf>
Is there any method or thing that will convert older EPS into something I can at least place into fresh documents?  The goal was to put EPS logos into letterhead/card/envelope templates printed from an office laser.

PS-to-PDF:
Nothing against these Rootrise guys other than a lack of history, but an Indian company established Dec 2012, almost no references or reviews, but a plethora of many similar utilities.  The sheer availability of linked generic-web-template sites and downloads, and hiding behind any further information other than "give us money" tells me to stay away.
I suspect it's just compiled scripting using existing background utilities on the Mac, and that it would fail because I just tried to do the same thing manually.  This utility probably just calls pstopdf and Preview to convert a file with and save it as another format, which doesn't work for me.  They have many other utilities that do the same thing with different formats.
EPS Converter:
Three reviews that all say it doesn't work, no support, and no money back.  I didn't even bother to look for this company on the web.
ps2pdf:
Doesn't exist, so I wonder if this was an earlier name for pstopdf, again, the background for what I've already tried.  Basically, if I do this command line with the terminal instead of the applications, I get a slightly more descriptive error message, if anybody can interpret it:  <%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: Adobe_level2_AI5 ]%%>  To me, that's just a comment about the file source so maybe it's more significant, like I need an AI5 dictionary or something.
Adobe Illustrator download:
An interesting idea that I'll save to the end.  It's because of the stupid cloud thing now, they want a pound of flesh to start the download and there's no way I'm going that route until I have no other options.  I assume I'll be downloading a fully functional version and they'll find a way to "rent" AI to me if I hand over anything like a credit card number.  Let's just say it's my holdout idea.
Thanks, anything else, anybody parse EPS in their heads know what things have changed that make old EPSF not really work into its future?
Zamzar can convert them to any of the folowing formats.

Hi Ian, thanks for the suggestion.  That means I will have to write a vi that executes after the application loads and it has a list of all the vi's with front panels that I want to minimise.  Seems do-able as long as I can be sure the vi does its work after all the vi front panels have loaded.  Maybe a time delay before getting into the nitty gritty work of shutting front panels, will do that.  Cheers.
    Hi Herbert,
Assuming that you already know which are the VIs that will be loaded with FP, by placing and setting that Front Panel Windowtate property in each of those VIs (as first portion of code to be executed; could be made into an sub-vi), those VIs shall minimize themselves at when loaded (and run).
Hope I am correct up to this point of time as for my existing projects, only one FP has to be minimized

  • What determines how a PDF or EPS file is opened??????

Hi I was wondering if anyone can tell, what determines how a PDF or EPS is opened in Photoshop.
If I open a PDF in photoshop, the first thing that pops up is the settings for which you want it to open. i.e., color mode, resolution, you choose what you want and then open.
I always thought that how the file was created determines the initial settings in which photoshop displays in that little dialogue box. (for example, if I open an illustrator eps file that I created in photoshop, it always prompts the correct settings (300dpi, CMYK) I click open and it works great.
But when I open a PDF in photoshop it always displays the color mode as RGB, not cmyk. Which i find odd, because I know there is no RGB color space in the PDF.
Today something weird happend, I created an Ad in Indesign, every image I am certain was 300 dpi, and the rest are vectors. Exported it to PDF with high resolution settings, but when I opened it up in Photoshop, the settins dialogue box promted it as 72dpi, which again I find odd because I know each image is 300, the rest are vectors, and I know the PDF preset to which I exported it creates high res images.
Does anyone know what determines how a PDF or eps file is opened in Photoshop and why photoshop is rendering a PDF in which I am certain is hi res, to a low res?
    Thanks for any help. Kevin

    >EPS is opened in Photoshop.
Nothing, really. EPS provides this info openly in its header, but it is not always right, so PS cannot even assume it would be correct to use that info. For PDF it's a different story. PDF is a container format that can contain any number of items in mixed resolutions and colorspaces, hence PS cannot assume anything. Likewise, you can have multiple pages, links, multimedia content, all of which may influence the result upon display or rasterization...

  • Problems with updating old .EPS files

    Hi All,
We have a strange need to resave/update old .EPS files with color TIF previews. The problem occurs when Illy files are relink in either Quark/Indy and are updated with the wrong import size and/or positions shifted. My conclusion from varies tests suggest it's the preview that is causing layouts to rethink that it's a new file and therefore reposition the updated links. Does anyone know a working solution that can prevent image import percentage from changing or art positions from shifting?
    Thank you!

    Bump.
Is there no solution for this problem?

  • How to create a eps file from illustrator?

I am new to illustrator and new to creating logos for print, I usually only do it for the web.  I am creating a logo for my team so that it can be printed onto a jacket.  I created an all white logo because the jacket is black.  I was asked to send an eps file.  I created the logo in illustrator and saved it as an eps file and as a pdf file thinking the printer could use the pdf for viewing.  When I open the pdf file, the only thing that's there is a soccer ball, my text and a few other things are missing.  When I open the saved eps file, the same thing, I have to go to select all to see all my other stuff in the eps file.  How do I save my file as eps and know that it's attaching everything I have within the illustrator file and how can I view the logo as a pdf?  Any help you can give would be greatly appeciated, thanks so much!

How did you similate the black color?
Since Illustrator does not have a background, you must create one with the rectangle tool, drag out a rectangle the size of the document and then move it to the back. That rectangle can then be filled with black.
Also look in your layers panel and see what you have for objects. You can select them there and move them up or down to bring them forward or backward on the document. It can also make it easier to select when the object is below others.

  • How to convert old Macwrite files in 10.6.8

Years ago, users published suggestions on the Apple forums for converting MacWrite, MacWrite II and MacWrite Pro files to RTF or Word formats, but none of these suggestions seem to work anymore.  MacLinkPlus is no longer supported by its developer, and the latest version dropped support for early Mac programs anyway. Other solutions (early ClarisWorks, AppleWords, Word) only run in Classic so don't work on new Macs running 10.6
I have been able to open these files one at a time through a OS9 emulation program SheepSaver, running the original MacWrite software, but this is very slow and tedious.
Does anyone know of a program that will do this conversion in batch, a program which works in OS 10.6?  There must be thousands of people with old files who would want to update them.  I couldn't find anything in the AppStore or anywhere else.

It seems to me that you can access your files (under SheepShaver), but what you want is a batch conversion from MacWrite to something else. (This an instructive problem. Two decades ago, MacWrite was the de facto WP standard on the Mac, but nowadays we can't find a conversion utility for it. Look around in your Documents folder and ask yourself, how many of my important files will I be able to read twenty years from now.)
    I have two suggestions.
    (1) This is a bit ironic, but MacText, a rather pricy current Windoze app, claims to read and convert MacWrite files.
    (2) Or try a forum of users of 'classic' Macs (eg, Low End Macs). You could ask someone to send you an old copy of MacLink Plus, which you may be able to run under SheepShaver, or Basilisk II, or mini vMac. Alternatively (if the nature and quantity of your MacWrite docs allow), you could ask someone with the right hardware/software to do the conversion for you. Those old files can't be very big, but if they're too much for email, you can always use a service like MediaFire. Remember that, to transfer 'classic' Mac files safely, it's best first to archive them with StuffIt (.sit) and then BinHex them (.hqx).

  • How to remove old backup files from time machine? Lion OSx

    Hi everyone,
I am just wondering how to efficiently and safely remove the old backup files from time machine? I tried once with command, but it damaged my extra-disk... Does Lion OSx have fixed that?
    Many thanks

    Blue-
Time Machine will automatically delete back-ups as the need for space arises. If you want to delete a certain file (application, document, whatever) and have it gone for good you can do that as well.

  • How do i open EPS file with "rasterize generic EPS format" options in photoshop CS?

    Hi please can someone help!?
I'm using Photoshop CS on mac- when i open EPS format files i usually get the "rasterize generic EPS format" option so that i can select the size i want the file to be etc without losing quality. However on one file i've opened before i don't seem to be getting that option at all, if i open the EPs file it just goes to a standard size automatically and doesn't give me the chance to change the size.  This is the same file that i have used since being sent the file, i've not resaved it. It used to give me the rasterize generic EPS format option but it no longer works.  Any ideas how i can make those options appear when opening or how i can rasterize/resize it once open without losing quality?
Just to be clear, i still get the rasterize generic EPS format option when opening other EPS files but it seems not with this one particular file.
    Many Thanks
    Ross

Encapsulated PostScript-files can contain either vector-content (in which case one gets prompted when opening with Photoshop), pixel-content (in which case Photoshop opens straight away) or a mixture (same as the first case).
When a file has been rasterized that’s that, You may want to go back to the original file if You can locate it.
Edit: Sorry, I read Your original post carelessly …
Have You tried opening the original file in Illustrator yet?

  • How to open the eps file in illustrator using c sharp?

How to open and save the eps file in illustrator via c#(c sharp)? Is there any c# illustrator reference guide available? Kindly advise me.
    Thanks

Pretty easy ...take the vb reference guide and make the modifications accordingly.
A quick tip would be to press CTRL+W and view the Object Browser after adding a reference to the illustrator Type Library... that will give you a pretty neat look about the illustrator object model in visual studio ... i`m not quite aware if a similar option is available within Mono Initiative's designer.
    after that is pretty easy.
(it doesn't really make sense imho importing the namespace as "Application" is used in many other namespaces)
add this to your Form1_Load routine:
    Illustrator.Application app = new Illustrator.Application();
    app.Open(@"D:\Work\msh_3ds.ai", null, null);
    hope it help.
    cheers;

  • Anyone know how to convert old audio files.

I have some old audio files going back to OS 7 or OS 9.   There is no file extension.
    Kind:  Unix Executable File
How can I convert these into something OS X will play.

That executable file type is just OSX's way of saying it doesn't know what it is.  Unfortunately during the OS7-OS9 days Apple dropped using file extensions. As I transitioned from DOS to Mac in the late 1980s I kept on adding them to all my files because I used several computers and would take a floppy from one to the other and needed to know what kind of files I had on there.  I still have sounds from OS7 days and I know what they are because I added extensions 24 years ago.
You might see if you can find a resource checking utility.  Resources are hidden file information about creator and type in older files.  I think I have one on this computer but I am running a G4 OSX 10.4.11 and it is Classic capable so I have all kinds of old software here that may not run on a newer computer.
IT is conceivable VLC might play the file.  It can do all kinds of things but I don't know how good its legacy format support is.

  • Questions on how to utilize still/ Video files from 3Gs using iLife 09?

    Hi,
Just got back from a trip where I took a bunch of stills and videos using the my 3Gs. I just downloaded them onto my Mac using iPhoto.
    1. How do get the video files from iPhoto into iMovie as it seems that iPhoto imported it all.
    2. How do I get the images that were taken with Location services turned "ON" to display the location they were taken?
    3. Will location mapping also work with iPhone video files?

Maybe someone in the iMovie discussion forum would know some of the specifics from iPhoto to iMovie. I thought I remember seeing a way to import straight from my iMove.

Not actually sure if it can import EPS files from Creative Cloud. I know it can import other undocumented image file types like RAW files.
