How to vectorize pen and ink drawing

Found a pen and ink drawing from 19th century and would like to trace it in such a way that it is 100% black and white. The copy has some grays and faint blues which should be converted to white. After that step I'd like to make the white parts transparent so they show the color of the background.
I'd like to use Illustrator 10 since I'm trying to become proficient at it, but I also own Photoshop 7.

The Pen Tool is the main tool in Illy, it is normally the right tool for tracing, and tracing is a good way to learn more about it; in some cases, you may consider the Paintbrush Tool or the Pencil Tool.
You may obtain varying Stroke Weights by (creating and) using Brushes. Depending on the drawing, maybe the original individual strokes should be kept as individual paths.

How to keep pen and brush's setting as per layer

Hi , is there anyway to keep the pen and brush setting remember as per layer , let say i have 2 layers of different stroke setting , after i draw 1 to another , it always revert to 1pt stroke width automatically .
i want to keep all the setting : transparency , color , stroke width to be remembered in layer . Therefore, i dont need to change again or remember whenever i draw in between layers.

Brushes have nothing to do with Layers. So no, you can't associate/restrict a given Brush to a given Layer. However, you can:
1. New document. Define two Layers.
2. Brush Tool: Draw something on Layer 1 with a Brush.
3. Brush Tool: Draw something on Layer 2 with a different Brush.
4. Appearance Palette: Set the New Art button to Maintains Appearance.
5. Press Ctrl to momentarily invoke the black pointer. Select the path you drew on Layer 1. Layer 1 becomes the active Layer and the Appearance of the object you select becomes the current Appearance.
6. Release Ctrl and draw anothet path. It is on Layer 1 and has the same Appearance of other items on Layer 1.
7. Press Ctrl, select an object on Layer 2.
8. Release Ctrl, draw another stroke on Layer 2.
...and so on.

Elements 11 crashes when try to apply the pen and ink filter.

Worked previously, then get crash. Re-installed elements, still crashes. All other filters work as expected.
Appreciate any help with this?
On a Mac running OSX 10.9.5

Try this solution:
1) Close photoshop Elements 11 completely.
2) Launch Windows Explorer and then go to:
<C:\USERNAME\JTANNA\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\Editor>
Replace USERNAME with your Windows profile name.
3) Rename the file called: Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Prefs.psp TO Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 Prefs.old
4) Close Windows explorer
5) Restart PSE 11
Hope this solves the problem.

Barbara thank you. I am running Mac OS 10.9,so it looks as if I'm going to have to live with it.
Interestingly when I filled in the Adobe error report that the system threw up,Adobe responded by basically saying
they had no idea why the system crashed under these circumstances. Really fills you with confidence doesn't it !

Bold, vertical, line and inverted drawing created when using Penpad in Flash CC - Help?

Just recently, whenever I use my VisTablet 465 Penpad Stylus and tablet to mark on the Canvas in Flash, a vertical line is created. The length of it is proportional to how horizontally centered the cursor is on the screen. When I try to move the cursor, the brush makes an inverted mark off the end of the line. I cannot find out how to stop it, and cannot draw anything sensible in Flash.
I contacted Flash assistance, and this was the conversation:

The issue is resolved in the latest update of Flash Pro.Please update Flash professional to 14.1.0.96 .Follow the instruction below for the same :
Installation instructions
Log out and log in to the CC desktop application. Update the application when prompted.
You should see the list of new updates as soon as the new CC desktop application is launched.
Install Flash Professional CC and Mobile Device Packaging app. On a high speed connection, it took me around 8 minutes.
After the application is installed, you can launch the application directly from the desktop app by clicking on it.

When you backup your iPad, the app data (not the app) is stored in that backup. When you updated, it should have restored the app data assuming you installed your backup when requested during the update.

Hello everybody. I'm having a problem with the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator and I don't know exactly how to reset it or make it function like the Pen tool in Adobe Photoshop.
As you can see below, when I'm trying to draw the shadows of face, hair and shoulders, it somehow fills unexpectedly and unwanted.. I just want to draw the anchor points first and then fill it with black color.. Just like in Adobe Photoshop CS6, see second image.
Any suggestions? I used Photoshop for over 4 years, and I'm not really that expert on Adobe Illustrator.

How can I create and organize a symbol to be integrated into Illustrator's stock symbols?

I am trying to create a series of symbols for maps (north arrows, scale bars, etc.) and then save them in Illustrator's "stock" symbol libraries - such as "maps". The goal is that whenever I create a new Illustrator file, I can immediately grab these newly created symbols without having to open another file and copy the desired linework from the other file (just trying to be more organized and efficient).
I am at a loss. I understand how to pull them into my drawing and break the link to modify. I also have gone as far as to make a custom symbol and drag it into the "Symbols" dialog box - but it wont let me drag it into the "Maps" Dialog box. And even if I dragged a symbol into the dialog box - is it automatically saved? There are no instructions regarding how to save symbols the user creates.

Very simple question-how to fill a shape I draw with color

hi. I am new to photoshop and having a lot of trouble selecting any shape that I draw. I am trying to do a tutorial that involves filling a canvas with gray, then drawing a smaller white rectangle inside of the larger gray canvas/rectangle. (I did not forget to unlock the background).
My question: how do i select and fill (with white) the second rectangle I draw on top of the larger gray rectangle???
In general, I cannot figure out how to select and/or fill any shape I draw using the rectangle tool. Likewise, the marque shape tools are no help as I cannot seem to draw a marque on my gray rectangle in order to select it and fill it with a white fill. I have also tried to use a "fill layer."
I am almost certain that something is wrong with my computer(I reset the settings), but then again I have not used photoshop in over a year. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Rectangle Tool sgould create a Work Path, Shape Layer or Fill Pixels according to the Settings in the Options Bar.
The Rectangular Marquee Tool should create a Selection, which you could Edit > Fill or use as a Layer Mask for a Solid Color Layer.
Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?

From the home screen of the printer you can press the right arrow button, and then press on the third icon that looks like ink. This will then display the estimated ink levels.
