  • How to get new Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) to detect external monitor via HDMI?

Hi everyone, this is my first Mac and for the most part it's been really, really wonderful.
This is my first major glitch:  I cannot get it to detect my external display:  It is an ASUS PA248Q, manufactured Aug 2012.
The HDMI cable according to my Amazon history is at least 1.3c from 2010,  "Fanatic Digital Imperial Series Gold-Plated HDMI Cable (6 feet)".
It works with perfectly connecting an AmazonTV box to an old Samsung TV, with vivid clarity, unlike our cableTV signal.
Just in case, I have a new HDMI cable on order, which claims to be of newest standards.
The Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) has the standard Intel Iris from the Haswell chips, as well as Nvidia GT 750M, the latter which I don't think has been used yet.
The ASUS display says:  HDMI NO SIGNAL.
I have tried shutting them down and replugging the cable.  I don't know what the ideal order is.  The Macbook Pro is plugged into AC power, as suggested.
In System Preferences>Display, I press the Option key to select "Detect Displays" option (seriously unintuitive).
I have also tried resetting the NVRAM:
I shut the machine down.  Pressed the power button, then quickly held the quadruplet:  Option-Command-P-R  (a double handful) and waited for the machine to chime a 2nd time.  Tried to detect external display no luck.
    Next, I reset the SMC:
I shut the machine down.  Then I pressed Shift-Control-Option-Power   for about 5 to 10s.  Then I turned on the machine normally.
NVRAM & SMC steps were from an old youtube video, as the instructions I had did not explain how to do so clearly.
Please let me know if I"m doing something wrong.
Seems so exorbitant to pay $350 for Apple Care;  that's a the cost for a whole new cheap laptop.
I will search the forums again.  If anyone answers this,  thank so much!

    Hello there, willr314.
It sounds like you've covered most of the practical steps found in this Knowledge Base article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573#1
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
The article does offer some additional links and recommendations as well:

  • 15'' Macbook Pro Retina vs 27'' iMac for college?

I'll be heading to college this fall, and I'm torn between getting a 15'' macbook pro (retina model) or a 27'' iMac. I've been a long time mac user and absolutely love Mac OS X, but I can't decide between having the portability of a macbook pro or the huge screen size and power of an iMac (I've been assured that the 27'' will fit in a dorm room, so that's not an issue). I'll be majoring in physics, so I'm not sure if I'll need a super-powerful computer, but it'd be nice to have one anyway.
(A side-note to the portability problem: I was thinking of just using my current 2008 macbook as an 'in-class notebook' or just buying an ipad and a bluetooth keyboard.)
Any suggestions would be very greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

If you have a 2008 MBP, do use that for class and purchase the iMac.  You get a lot more performance for your money with an iMac than you will purchasing a retina.  For me, this falls in the 'no brainer' category.
It simply comes down to how powerful you think you may need to make it.  Contact your school and get the details of what will be required and outfit the iMac accordingly.  Note that you may have to install Windows which is another plus for the iMac.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro Retina? Or iMac?

I'm starting online classes for my university, I will be doing online classes for two to three semesters to rack up scholarship money and then transfer to a university up here(my family just moved from NC to AK for job opportunities and I came with). I can afford either of these laptops, but I'd like not to spend a ton of money.
I need my computer to handle gaming, web surfing, a TON of Skype(like 6+ hours of Skype a day), streaming, etc.
I typically do a lot at the same time, an example is, I'll be on Skype, playing a game with them through Steam. I need something that can handle all of that.
I don't want a 27" iMac because I believe that's too big and I don't need a screen that big. So I'd be deciding between the 21.5" and either of the MacBook Pro Retina models. I currently have a 13" MacBook the aluminum model and it's really hard doing all of this. I can't play certain games and Skype at the same time without the game lagging extremely bad. I do like the portable aspect of the Retina and I will eventually end up going to actually class and it would be nice to be able to bring everything with me at once. But if I get the iMac I would keep my MacBook instead of giving it to my parents and have both a desktop and a laptop. If I got the Retina I would give the MacBook to my parents to use and when my brother graduates from college in two years the MacBook would be my present to him. It's in amazing shape and would save him a ton of money!
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!
    Thank you!

Hi, I am from Hong Kong. I have bought a customerized late-2012 iMac 27", but it hasn't been to my home yet
For your case, you will use it for school and games mainly, but not video editing or graphic designing, right? Therefore, I suggest you for buying iMac 21.5" with high sepc one with the following reasons:
First, you have a laptop - MacBook Pro already. Even though you said if you bought RMBP, you would give the old one to your parents, why don't you try to have a Mac desktop - iMac at home? (MacBook Pro+iMac = GREAT !!) That's my personal formula.
Second, although Retina MacBook Pro has a awesome display, please be reminded some games may not support with such a high pixel screen. Thus, the performance may work poorly. On the other hand, for iMac 21.5", it has a 1920x1080 screen, which is suitable for most of the game. Unless you want to learn video editing, photo editing and graphic designing, I won't recommend RMBP to you.
Last but not least, comparing the storage parts, all RMBP models use SSD for storage, but iMac use SATA or Fushion Drive only. It seems RMBP is better than iMac. However, when you consider the minimum volume of iMac, it is 1TB for both SATA or Fushion Drive, which is much greater than the RMBPs with at most 512GB SSD. As a game player, you may download several large-file games, says 2GB to 20GB. A larger volume harddisk will be better. What's more, if you choose the Apple's new technology-Fushion Drive, you will experience the efficiency of opening Apps or Games.

  • Using Macbook Pro Retina with 2011 iMac

  • New MacBook Pro Retina or 27" iMac

I currently own a mid-2009 MacBook Pro and I'm considering an upgrade here in the near future.
I really like the look and feel of the 13" MacBook Pro Retina. But since I already own a MacBook Pro (even though its older) I'm somewhat considering a new 27" iMac.
Just looking to see what other people think would be the better choice.
    Thanks

Exactly... I love the portability of my MBP, but already own one (even though it may be older and slower)
Should I give up hope on ever seeing a retina iMac? Im sure they would be crazy expensive either way. haha

  • How to charge my MacBook Pro Retina for the first time?

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro 15inch 2.7ghz 16GB RAM model. I want to know how am I supposed to charge the laptop for the first time & plus charging cycles as I continue to use it later on? I've had bad experiences with the iP
There's mixed responses upon Googling the question, some say let it drain completely with others say to charge it when the battery reaches between 25%-5%. Currently my battery charge is at 33% and I haven't used it much either, say maximum an hour's usage in the past 6hours or so from the time I received it and it has not been on standby except for an hour, the remaining time, it was switched off completely. HELP.

Interesting, looking at this page from Apple http://www.apple.com/batteries/ and then following the links at the bottom for each device (notebook, iPod, iPad, iPhone) Apple seems to be recommending one deep cycle a month, that is a discharge to 0 and then a full charge.
For example from the iPhone page:
    Use iPhone Regularly
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
So is Apple wrong here, or are they using different technology?

  • Battery time remaining (how to properly charge macbook pro retina)

I'm a new macbook user, using a macbook pro 15 inch. I've been plugging in my charger when the battery gets down to around 20% and unplugging it when the light turns green (at 100%). I thought macbooks had a battery life of around 7-8 hours, but at fully charged, my time remaining (when I click on the battery icon the top right) says 5 hours. Can a  more experienced user correct me on as to what I am doing wrong in charging my macbook?

Two points:  The 'Time' setting is one of the most unreliable pieces of information on your MBP.  I set mine to '%'.  What it tries to show is based on what the MBP is doing at that very instant.  If you open Activity Monitor, you will see that the internal processing is very volatile.
What Apple advertises as time on a full charge is based on ultra conservative settings and use.  It doe not reflect the 'real' world.  Read the fine print and note the words 'up to', nor will, guaranty or promise.
Your battery run time will be a reflection of what applications you have open and the respective resources these applications require.
Here is a link to some good information regarding your MBP battery and its usage.  This will give you something to do for the rest of the afternoon.

  • MacBook Pro retina 13" vs iMac 21.5" 2011

When thinking of buying a Mac, I always wanted to have one for my desktop. So I always consider an iMac, but my last birthday present was a MacBook Pro 13" retina. I'm very pleased with it, I enjoy the retina display, the USB 3.0 for my external drive, HDMI in my TV, and the trackpad. But last week me and my girlfriend broke up and had a major fight, somehow in the middle of the battle the MacBook got damage. It is a bit bended in two corners and the display have a little crack, but doesn't affect the image in the screen. It's painful for me to look at it with those two details and someone offered me the option of trade it for an 21.5" iMac 2011. I'm very confused, I know I would miss the MacBook retina features, but also pleased with the larger display, of the iMac.
I would like to hear some opinions, it will be very helpful. (Hope I made my self clear with this situation)

    marianofromfl,
your least expensive option would be to purchase a bus-powered external disk with a USB 3.0 port to use with your Mid 2012 MacBook Air; some examples can be seen here.
What sorts of school and creative work are driving your desire for increased performance?

  • How to connect a Macbook Pro to the new iMacs?

I have an older model of Macbook Pro with a mini display port. Now i have bought a new iMac with thunderbolt and want to use it as an external display! is this completely impossible? Because i bought an MDP to MDP-cable but it didn't work.. i made a lot of research and found out that they've removed target display mode for MDP-ports.. is there another way around this problem? other cables? adapters?

    Hello,
You can use a mobile phone as a modem. This can be done manually by yourself or automatic by a commercial third party software:
Manual: you need the right scripts and connection settings and enter them manually in your network configurations. You find the right scripts and configuration hints here: http://www.taniwha.org.uk
Automatic: try the demo of launch2net at http://www.launch2net.com which features a powerful configuration assistant which already includes all necessary network settings and scripts.
The other option would be to use the XU 870 ExpressCard modem from Novatel at http://www.novatelwireless.com. If you are living in the USA and use Cingular, Apple has released a so called WWAN update with all settings. So you can use this ExpressCard in Cingular networks immediatly.
    Thank you

  • How protect my new Macbook Pro Retina Display without Kensington lock ???

    Hi!
As the title says, how I can protect my new MBP Retina Display?
I found this browsing some forums:
    http://store.griffintechnology.com/techsafe-cable-lock-system

    Any suggestions?

    Understood.
I don't understand why Apple did not add a kensington lock. Not need much space...
They have taken what was already an almost impossibly thin engineering marvel and made it significantly thinner. I wonder if, because of this, some compromises to the internal frame had to be made therebye not allowing a locking point to attach to anything "significant" inside the MBP, and, if it was simply tethered to the outer casing, it was be all too easy to snip/break away, making it almost useless.
