How to wake up opened MacBook from sleep - only external display running? I dont shut down my MacBook and I am using only external monitor. Lid closed it is not good idea, sometimes is MacBook and main MacBook display to warm. So I must six times per day open and close my MacBook. Any solutions?

Sure, the added heat sink and dissipator will help. Although a gel pad has a lot of heat capacity, meaning it has the ability to absorb a lot of heat, eventually it will saturate with heat from the MB and reach a point of stasis. Then it gets rid of heat the same way the Mac does, namely radiation and conduction into other things around and in contact with it, including air. Of course the Mac has a fan if it needs it. The gel pad doesn't.
If the gel pad is sitting on a metal surface, like a steel file cabinet or something like that, it helps to drain the heat away from the pad, and by extension, the Mac. The aluminum cookware worked like that. I had heat capacity of its own, but more importantly, it added to the surface area that was performing convection cooling. So, yes, both together give a better result.

Mouse Not Antialiased After Wake from Sleep? (on external display)

I've been noticing something very strange lately: after waking the MacBook Pro from sleep, the mouse on the screen is no longer antialiased and is instead quite rough looking — it also has no shadow. I've only noticed this when using an external display. If I'm using the MacBook's built-in screen instead this doesn't happen. Not really a huge problem but I was wondering if anybody else had this issue and if there's a fix. Thanks.

I'm sorry, what? Forgive me if I say that your reply doesn't make any sense. This issue almost certainly has nothing to do with the hard drive failing (or being too stressed), nor is it a lack of RAM. In fact, given that it's only with the external display (Apple LED display), it really almost certainly has nothing to do with the hardware it all. Without a doubt, it would appear, it is a software bug of some kind. For example, if I log out and log back in again, it's fine. So, a minor annoyance, but I'm curious if anyone knows about it/knows of a fix.
For the record, I haven't "bell/whistle"d the Finder at all. I don't see how that's relevant in any way, anyway.
I personally speculate this is some sort of bug with Mac OS X; I was wondering if anyone else had had a similar issue.

How do I get my Macbook Pro to detect an external display?

Hi there.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro today.
Everything about it is wonderful, except: When I plug an external display into the Thunderbolt port using a Minidisplay port to VGA adapter, it doesn't send a signal to the external monitor. The screen on my Macbook will go blue for a second, and then the windows freeze. The mouse will be movable for a bit (up to a minute), but nothing is clickable. Strangely, it seems as though it's functioning as if there were a second monitor (I can move the mouse off-screen as though it's going over to another display). But then the spinning rainbow wheel starts and never stops. If I unplug the Minidisplay port to VGA adapter, the Macbook will snap back into professional mode and everything works again.
If I try to boot the computer up with the Minidisplay port to VGA adapter already pluged in, it simply won't boot up (I get a gray screen with an apple and nothing more).
I tried using gfxCardStatus set to "discreet only" and I still have this problem. I tried to run a firmware update, but my comp seems to be entirely up-to-date already (just set it up today).
The monitor and adapter seem to be working fine, and function as an external display when pluged into the Mini-DVI port on my 2009 Macbook running Snow Leopard.
I guess my question is, what's causing this? Is this an adapter problem? Like, do I need a special adapter to use with a Thunderbolt port as opposed to the one I'm using which works when pluged into a Mini-DVI port?

The only thing that I can suggest is trying a different adapter - such as this one from Monoprice.
I don't know if that's the root of your problem, though. Does the external monitor have DVI? You could get a Thunderbolt to DVI adapter from Monoprice - here - and give that a shot.

I am experiencing a lot of problems connecting my macbook pro to external monitor once I put it to sleep. I have tried every options like setting up PRAM and all, but it just wont work. Sometimes the restart works and sometimes it wont. I am using a Samsung monitor. I have no idea what to do, as I keep on clicking Detect displays and it just wont do anything. Can anybody please help me as to how I can wake up my macbook from sleep and get it connected to the monitor. I have a mac keyboard and bluetooth mouse, but neither would wake the mac. I have change my bluetooth settings so that the mouse should be able to wake it up..

Occasional reboot when waking MacBook from sleep. iTunes related?

Recently, sometimes when I'm waking my MacBook from sleeping, instead of waking, it reboots. I'd say, one out of twenty times.
It started around the same time I started subscribing to PodCasts. (I'm not using an iPod with them, just downloading them to the MacBook and listening to them through iTunes.)
My iTunes version is 7.0.2.
Any clue as to why this may be happening? Or, more importantly, how to resolve this issue?

I wouldn't think your PodCast subscriptions are the cause. However, you could cancel your subscriptions for a few weeks and see if that sorts it out.
Here are some troubleshooting ideas that I think may be more relevant:
1. Have you applied the "MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.1."? That update fixed a problem with <<a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304308">spontaneous shutdowns — at a guess, your problem may be related.
2. You may want to try some of the troubleshooting steps cited in the following documents:• "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303234."
• "Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode."

Had the same issue and finally solved it. After the upgrade to Mavericks our 2 new Macbook Airs stopped connecting automatically to Wifi while the older machines the kids had still worked fine.
Bought a new airport extreme and problem solved. Our Airport Extreme was about 5 years old and was probably not compatible with the new OSX.
BTW this was after trying everything people suggested on this forum and a 4 hour marathon tech support call with Apple where we reinstalled the OSX.
***** to need to spend $200 but glad the problem got solved.
New extreme is also mega fast so its all good.

Trouble waking macbook from sleep

Im having trouble waking my macbook from sleep once i close the top of my computer. I can just make out the outline of my desktop but it is very dark. It takes around 4-5 minutes before the screen of the computer illuminates. I have tried holding down F2 as well as tapping the power button but neither seems to work. does anyone have any suggestions?

Same here. I did bring it in and they exchanged it but the new one is even worse. Once it gets into this cycle, I can get it to the login screen, it won't accept my password (even making SURE i enter it correctly) until the third time. Then it accepts it and bam, goes to sleep again. Only a hard reboot fixes it for a time. It happened this morning, so we'll see how long until it happens again. We have two other macbooks (a late 07 model and a macbook pro from early 08) that do not do this.

I am not sure if I am able to before, but right now making a swipe or even a click on my trackpad doesn't wake up the computer from sleep - although typing on the keyboard does. Is this really the case? Or can the trackpad also wake the computer? I've already tried resetting the PRAM but it would still not do the trick. It doesn't bother me much though.

Swiping the trackpad should also wake the computer. Touching a keyboard key that is benign is usually preferred. i.e. shift key.
