Why don't you try using VCL to view your avi files directly. It is a great media player that will handle just about anything that you throw at it. No need to convert files.

IdeaCenter B310 Fan Problems

Hi,
my girlfriend got a IdeaCenter B310. The fan is realy noisey, i tested the system withprime95, cleaned the fan and the radiator but it didnt get more silent. Its not only a Problem in Games or under higher CPU or GPU load, in Windows IDL or Desktop its the same, my girlfriend said it was more silent when she got it about 2 years ago. So anny sugestions what to do ? Replacing the actually Fan with anoriginalreplacement for about 30€ here in Germany seems a waste of money, so anyone got experiences replacing the fan with a comatible more silent one or replacing only the fan himself in the original casing to get the Ideacenter nearly silent.

To answer my own question: Turns out one of the female temp sensor connectors came off the logic board. I don't know how. The only fix would be to replace the logic board but this machine is now out of warranty and the fix would be $1000.
My solution was to take the open source program smcFanControl and modify the code so that it sets min. and max. speeds in the smc according to CPU temperature. The background is that this is what OS X usually does, except it goes into failsafe mode when one temperature sensor has failed, as in my case. There are many temperature sensors in the MacBook Pro - iStatPro shows 8 working temperature sensors in mine. However, if just one fails, the system turns up fan speeds to 6000.
I am now just going by the one temperature that smcFanControl uses, and tuned the fan speeds so they are always on the safe side, e.g. higher than the original software would set them for any given temperature. As a result, my MacBook Pro is cooler than ever. I am thinking about releasing an updated version of smcFanControl with dynamic settings.

How do I deal with constant "error loading content" messages?

I'm constantly seeing error messages on my Apple TV (2nd gen) on content I easily watch on my other iDevices. What gives? This thing is rapidly becoming a vy expensive paper weight. Possibly the worst Apple product I've yet purchased. Am I alone in this? What can I do?

You cannot connect to TC using USB.
Plug the TC into the computer using ethernet.
Press and hold the reset button on the TC for about 10sec.. until front led rapidly flashes.. release it.
Open the airport utility and make sure you can locate the TC. Check the disk page that the disk started up without errors.

How to watch movies which are located on a WD My Cloud on an Apple TV

I have a MacBook Air, a WD My Cloud and an Apple TV.
All of my music is on my MacBook Air (just like my iTunes library), and there is not enough space to store my movies on my computer so I bought a WD My Cloud to put my movies in it.
How can I add into my iTunes library movies from WD My Cloud, so I can watch them with my Apple TV ?
Do I have to create a new iTunes library on the WD My Cloud ? Can I do it with only on library ?

So what's the status now? Are these movies on the WD and have they been added to your library or do you just have a folder with movies on the WD?
You can add items stored on a different drive to iTunes and not have the files relocated by holding down the option key while dragging the items from the drive to iTunes. While this works it can have disadvantages, particularly when it comes to moving your files to another drive at some stage. If your external drive is not connected and you want to use iTunes to only play music you will still see a bunch of broken link symbols ! until you restart iTunes with the drive connected.
An alternative is to create a library just for movies. While some don't like this I know I only watch a particular movie only once every 5 years or so. I don't need to have it in front of me in my library all the time where it takes up a small but definite amount of resources to manage as part of my general music library. If I did feel in a movie mood I could restart iTunes with the movie library and browse that. The external drive only has to be attached when I want to use that library (I actually have 4 libraries on my computer for different purposes since some of them I don't need to see the content unless my mother in law wipes her mp3 player accidentally ).
To create a new library start iTunes while holding down the option key and tell it to create the new library on the external drive. Add media to it by dragging media to the 'automatically Add To iTunes" folder you will find in the new iTunes folder on the external drive.
All the above said, I have memory of some people complaining about certain external drive models and AppleTV. I don't have an Apple TV so I didn't bother reading or remembering them but you might want to do a web search and see if there are any issues with a WD MyCloud.

I rented a movie from ITunes yesterday and now I cannot figure out how to watch it on Apple TV. I have done this before, and to watch it later on, I would go back under the "Movies" option, find the movie, and there would be a Play option available. We did the update to Apple TV yesterday. Now when I go back to the movie, I see the original options. Preview, Rent, Buy, etc. When I click on Rent again, it says the movie has already been rented but not downloaded. It instructs me to go under Settings/Downloads/Check Downloads, but there is nothing under Settings about Downloads. I found an option to Check for Rentals, but when I click on that option, it just keeps searching, with no results. Any ideas? This worked before the update, even though it took forever to download a movie....

I had the same issue with my apple tv 3rd generation. I rented Sinister and selected the "rent and watch now" option. Half way through the movie I accidentally pressed the menu button. When I looked for the rented movie on my apple tv I could not find it. Not even above the movie pannel where "purchased" and "top movies" comes up on the main menu. the apple tv suggests to go to settings>downloads but I don't have that option. I did go to settings> itunes store> check rentals but that didnt work either. It took too long to even check. Thank you because this SOLUTION worked great.
SOLUTION: How to reset apple tv 3 3rd generation to view rented movies:on the apple tv remote: press and hold "menu" to go to the main menu. Select SETTINGS> GENERAL >RESET >RESET ALL SETTINGS. After the apple tv resets, input all your information again and your rented movies should be visible when you cruise above the "movies" section. THANK YOU!!
Apple needs to solve this issue because honestly it took me 3 hours and a half to watch a movie that only lasted 2 BECAUSE I wast trying to solve the issue, reseting and all. blahh.

Watching dvds with vlc-no right-click 'open with vlc' option as on the pc?

i searched discussions for this question but wasn't sucessful ... so here's my question:
i use a toshiba pc laptop and an iMac G5 ... in order to watch dvds (with different region codes) on my PC, I use VLC with great success ... I wanted to do the same on my iMac, but came across the following problem:
when I want to watch a DVD on the laptop, i simply right-click the title and go for 'open with VLC' (which gives me the menu and so on) ... when I try to do this on the iMac, however, there is no
'open with VLC' option when I right-click the DVD ... I can open single chapters of the DVD by opening the single .vob files, but I'm not happy with doing that ...
any ideas how to make watching DVDs with VLC on my iMac as easy as it is on my laptop?

If you want all video DVDs to open in VLC, go to System Preferences>CDs & DVDs>When you insert a video DVD:>Open other application> and now select VLC.
This will open VLC, but the DVD will not automatically play, you have to go to File>Open Disc once in VLC.
One question though, why not use Apple's DVD player Application?

How to watch my presentation full screen on PC ?

I have done a presentation in Kenote '05 and I want to watch on PC computer.
The problem is that my school's computers doesn't have QT Pro so I won't be able to watch it on full screen. I have tried to export it as a PowerPoint presentation but all transitions are lost and slides doesn't look well...
Do you know other solutions, how to watch (full screen with, all transitions and interactive buttons) presentation on PC, made in Kenote ?!

Keynote 3 (06) finally allows you to tag a movie to play full screen, but there are other scripts out there that will allow you to change a movie's settings. I haven't tested any in a long while, but I know Tom Negrino used to have one on his web site (which I can't find now).

I think there are 2 solutions on the market, EyeTv 500, and Miglia TVMini HD, both of which accept the coax cable from your cable provider.
