How to Watching AVI on QuickTime

I have an Pentax Optio S5z. It makes AVI movie files. On my old computer (cube) my friend installed something that allowed me to see those files easily with QuickTime. I didn't have to convert them to anything, just click on them and they open up perfectly.
I just upgraded to the MacBook Pro and I can't watch my AVI files. My friend does not remember what he installed and I can't seem to work it out. I called Apple care and they told me that it may be that the Intel chip isn't working with what ever was installed.
Help me!!! Someone.
A1226   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

QT Pro plays nothing more than QT (non-pro). So nobody buy it for the playback of more things as it won't help.
Flip4mac plays Windows Media. The free component will allow playback.
Digicams use a whack of differing codecs and one of the simplest things to do for AVI files is to download one thing, for free - Perian, from Perian.org and it is like a Swiss Army Knife (C) of codecs for Quicktime. If Perian won't help which is not too likely, then the maker may have a codec specifically for their little clips. If you install Perian , drag all the detritus out of the same folder like DivX and 3ivX codecs , Casio AVI etc., as it handles them all and multiple codecs will do more harm than good.

  • How to watch .avi video in iphone?

Hi I use win Vista and I just bought a new iphone. Everything works well. Only one question is : how to watch .avi video in iphone. I download a lot of video in that format but cannot add them into intunes, therefore cannot sync into iphone. I search the web and know the problem is quickplayer doesn't support this video format. Is there any solution to tranform .avi video format to any format which quickplayer support?
Another question is : I bought some TV show DVD ( like Grey's anatomy, House, etc.) How can I sync those films into itunes then sync into my iphone, so I can enjoy it at lunch time at work.
Thanks for you help in advance.

The iPhone cannot play AVI videos. You'll need to convert them before you can load and play them on your iPhone. If you search the Using iTunes for Windows forum for "video convert", you'll find a lot of threads on this subject already.
I bought some TV show DVD ( like Grey's anatomy, House, etc.)
Sorry, but DVDs are copy-protected and cannot legally be converted. It's a violation of the Discussions terms of use to talk about such ripping.

  • How To Watch .AVI Files

I Was wondering how to get quicktime to read .avi files or if there is any programs out there to use on macs to watch .avi files.
I am not doing anything illegal either, i bought a disc from my local cd store that has music videos on them in .avi format.
    Anyone please help?

    Try DivX.
    http://www.divx.com/
At the bottom, click download Divx. That will take you here:
    http://www.divx.com/divx/?src=footercontact_from/index.php
    Look for the Mac version.
    Download it.
It can work miracles. Though there are still some AVI files you won't be able to read. AVI is only a container. Many variations exist within. Some Windoze produced avi's continue to elude me. I do my best trying to keep up and only know a little. But I know DivX works well.

could someome please help me figure out how to watch a video file with a   .avi   suffix?

Perian codecs for Quicktime - http://www.perian.org - plugins to add functionality to Quicktime for playing additional audio and video formats. 2012- No longer being developed but may still work.
Quicktime audio problems, Perian, VLC - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9013669 - read note about uninstalling prior DIVX support before installing Perian.
VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - general media player that plays just about anything.

  • How to watch .avi movies on apple tv 2 gen

    Hi there.
Just bought an Apple tv gen2 day before yesterday. Here are my question(s)
    1. I am trying to stream .avi format thru my itunes. I was able to stream .mp4( i think) on the apple tv.  How can i stream avi format?
    2. I also have an Ipad 1gen. Everybody keeps talking about mirroring it so that whatever I do on Ipad I can see it on my TV. How do i do that. Sounds really cool.
    Thank you
    Evo_flask

The way I do it is to use a program/app called Air Video: http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/index.html
The program will stream .avi files to the app on the iPhone or iPad and then from there you can AirPlay the movie to the AppleTV. The app costs A$2.99 and the server is free. You need iOS 5 for it work. You can still use your Phone for other things though I haven't tried a phone call.
You can't mirror the iPad 1st gen display but you can use the component cable to plug the iPad directly to the tv and play the movie from Air Video through that rather than AirPlay

  • Megaview 561 - how to watch avi files with DC3 audio?

I have a Megaview 561. I love it. I wish MSI supported it with updates!!!!!
Anyway, my problem is watching (or rather, listening) to movies I am trying to watch which use DC3 audio instead of MP3 audio. I know I can re-encode the whole movie, but that takes forever.
Anyone know what the solution is? Any way to get something like AC3Filter to work on a MegaView? Any suggestions appreciated!
    Thanks

most firmware requests that people make, such as the one at the start of this topic, are simply impractical due to copyright and licensing issues
its not a case of MSI not being able to issue firmware updates as and when; if the current firmware code works, then why fix it? i'd feel much more confident buying a product that had no firmware upgrades than one that had loads to fix silly little issues.
there are so many diffferent video and audio codecs out there that to provide support for them all would be near impossible, if not illegal without the relevant license
Hi and thanks for the relevant response. As I stated, I'm happy with the MSI Megaview. And yes, the firmware code works. But clearly there is room for improvement as a movie with a DC3 soundtrack will not have audio. I guess it's in the eye of the beholder if the lack of audio is a silly little issue or a major annoyance. It's not the end of the world...after all, it's just a movie . I guess I was hoping that there may be some way that I could modify something so that these movies will have sound (without having to reencode the entire movie); that perhaps there is a workaround that would not involve a firmware or software update / upgrade from MSI. For example, with Windows, you simply download and install the codecs or something like AC3 Filter or AC3 Decoder. Do you know of any such workaround?
I judge from your response that installing or updating codecs is not possible to do on the Megaview 561?
Thanks again for the help. Cheers

  • How to export/watch .avi files using Quicktime Pro

    Hi there.
I've got Quicktime Pro and I'm trying to convert .avi files so I can play them on my iPhone. I open up the .avi file in Quicktime and then slect the Movie to iPhone option.
It will take about 20 mins or so, but when I open the file all I get is a white screen even though the timer is showing that the movie is playing.
I can't even watch .avi files using Quicktime as all I get is a black screen.
    Could someone please help?
    Thanks

Thanks, but unfortuntately that didnt work. MPEG Streamclip couldn't play any of the .avi files, it still came up with a white screen while playing.
I tried this with a number of .avi files but I had the same problem.

  • How I can watch *.avi files on OS9.2.2?

Can anybody tell me, how I can watch *.avi files on OS9.2.2? I've installed plenty of codecs (DivX, 3ivx) for QuickTime, but have only video WITHOUT sound! Somebody says, that I need AC3... I've tryed install it too, but without result...
My system: OS 9.2.2, QuickTime Pro v.6
    iMac G3 (OS X), Pismo with OS9

Take a look at the DivX Doctor 2 info on the 3ivx site. It has some info on AC3 audio, although I am not sure if it applies to OS 9.

how can i watch .avi on my os x Mavericks?

VLC is good.  You can also try MplayerX (https://www.macupdate.com/download/18580/MPlayer-dev-latest.dmg).
If you want to use Quicktime, then you can try the perian plugin
Get Perian, and install it. - http://perian.org
If you like to use Quicktime (superior) than that's the way to go.
VideoLan (VLC player) is a great secondary choice, seems to run most things.

  • Watching .avi files with quicktime?  Help

    Hi all,
I have a bunch of .avi movie files I want to watch, but when I try to open them with quicktime, I'm told I may need additional components to watch them. I'm taken to a screen with a bunch of vendors offering Quicktime components, but I have no idea which one(s) I need.
Can anyone tell me what I need to download for quicktime, or what other application I can use to watch .avi movie files?
    Thanks!
    Dave

    bluegecko,
if you like MPlayer, you might also like VLC-a similar player, also open source and free, that plays a lot of formats. (it is also cross platform) http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html (be sure to get the Intel, not PPC version)
Personally, I'm hoping the new Perian or Niceplayer evolve into supporting more formats, as I prefer using Quicktime or Niceplayer's interface to MPlayer or VLC.

have downloaded flip4mac to watch .avi files on quicktime but still not able to access files. Any suggestions? Thanks L

Flip4Mac plays Windows Media content, not AVI content. The codec needed to play those specific AVI files is most likely part of Perian or VLC but may not exist for Mac OS X.
