how to wipe  hard drive bc selling computer and want all passwords/personal info gone?

You need to boot the computer from another source, e.g. a CD or an external drive. Then run Disk Utility, select the drive you want cleaned up, and run Erase. Note the security options: "write zeroes" will erase the drive completely.

If you are talking about your friend's iTunes password, you are not supposed to use or have his password or even his music, etc. in your computer...

  • I was trying to change my home folder nickname to a different name I then restarted my computer and now all my stuff are gone. What can I do to get them back

I was trying to rename my home folder I then restart my computer and now all my stuff are gone. Can anyone help?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /Users/ as the path, and move the files to your current home folder. Alternatively, open the Accounts or Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, unlock it, control-click your account, choose Advanced Options, and change the path to the home folder.

  • About to sell my macbook, how to wipe hard drive clean

I'm about to sell my macbook (I've upgraded) , how would I wipe the hard drive, the whole computer for that matter, clean of all websites I've visited, passwords etc?
Anything else you can suggest? Like clear all bookmarks, and in Safari pull down menu, I guess 'reset safari' and 'empty cache' too, etc?
And in Accounts under System preferences can I change the name? I see I can change the password, sorry I'm not too computer proficient...I hate to miss something.
    Thanks all

Here's what you need to do:
    1. Re-install Mac OS (don't choose an option that keeps the old files, wipe it clean!)
    2. After re-installing, open Disk Utility, and run the Erase Free Space utility on your newly formatted drive. This will ensure that your old files can't be recovered.
If you want your personal data off of your Macbook, simply doing step one will NOT be enough!!! Erasing and deleting are two different things. (Step one deletes, step 2 erases.)
Also, what chipperz posted should work.

  • I got a new computer and now all my music is gone. how do i transfer my music from my iPod touch to my new computer. right now when i plug it in, it says if i sync, i will lose everything on my itouch... PLEASE help!

So I had an ipod touch, got a lot of my music from my old CD's that i later threw away, then got a new computer and lost all my music on my itunes, but still have it all on my itouch. I just simply want to get my music from my itouch to my computer. I now have a iphone and it would be nice to put some of that music on my phone as well.
    Hope someone can help me!!!
    thanks,
    Sophia

While that may work9I do not think it will) with iTunes purchased music it will not work for other music.
    - Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - For other music you will need a third-party program like one of those discussed here.
    Copy music

  • How to wipe hard drive to sell without disks

I am selling my 13"  macbook pro  (anyone interested?)
I need to wipe or restore my hard drive to protect my information.
What is the best way to do this without having to purchase the disks?
    Thanks!

If your system shipped with installation discs, you're just going to have to call Apple and, with your serial number handy, order a set of discs. The charge is minimal ($20, I think, plus tax and shipping). It is the only way that you're going to be able to do a complete factory reset and it would be most unfair not to supply your buyer with the discs, should he/she need them.

  • I can still wipe hard drive on a computer I sold?

I sold my 11" MacBook air to a friend a couple of months ago.
I just noticed that in my "Find my phone" app that the sold device is showing in the list of devices. I have the option to play a sound on it, remotely lock it, and remotely wipe it.
I definitely wiped the hard drive before I sold it so I have no idea how this could be happening.
Anyone have any ideas on this?

Is it possible that when you first gave your computer to your friend that your iCloud account information was still on it?
The name of the computer is not really tied to your iCloud account.  It just means that when the computer was using your iCloud account information that it's name was changed.
Also, once a device is in the Find My iPhone list, it's going to stay there until it's deleted.  So even if the computer has since had it's iCloud account information changed, it's still going to show up for you.
I think a quick conversatin with your friend will resolve things.
In the mean time you might want to change your iCloud account password.

  • How To Wipe Hard Drive and Install Mavricks.

    Hello,
So I want to erase my hard drive completely and install mavricks back on to it. From reading other articals some said that if your computer originaly came with Mountain Lion (mine did) that you DON'T need a install disk. So now im lost in the confusion. What I want to know is how to completely Erase The HD and istall Mountain Lion Again. The way Apple told me to do it was after I click erase on the HD (throught DU) a window would pop up and ask if I want to reinstall Mountain Lion. Is that true?
(One more questing aside from the topic is, can you install a OS from Flash Drive.)
    Thanks

Apple explains how to do it in:
OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X, the article is located at http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14243

  • How to initialize older external hard drive to new computer and transfer itunes library

How can i initialize an older external hard drive (maxtor one touch ii, without the original operating disc)  into my new computer operating mac osx 10.6.8 to transfer an itunes library?

Just connect the drive, run Disk Utility, select the drive, and partition/erase it as required.
By the way, this forum is intended for questions about old, pre-G3 hardware, and doesn't get much traffic. Hence it's not the forum where you'll be most likely to get help with problems involving more recent systems. There are specific forums for all PowerPC and Intel-based Macs as well as forums for each version of Mac OS X.

  • Erase the Hard Drive before selling computer ???

I just sold my iBook G4 (with original OS 10.3 cds)
I will be reinstalling all the original software before I deliver it.
What's the best way to ZERO the hard drive. I knew how to do it
with OS 9 but I can't figure it with OS X.
I just want to erase all the data (FOR GOOD) and then reinstall
the Cds - before delivering it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanx!

    Hi SLNY
Insert your Install disk 1 into to the drive and then Restart, and hold down the C key to take you to the installation windows.
Select your language, the start up Volume and choose Erase and Install.
Select Security options and choose zero all data.
This will take longer. If you choose more extensive secure erase, be prepared to wait several hours for it to complete.
After the installation, at the point your registration process starts, quit and switch off the computer.
This will allow the new user a freshly installed system, whereby they can complete the registration process themselves.

  • How to wipe hard drive and keep OS?

    Hi everyone...
I have a Powerbook G4 12" that was loaned to me. I'd like to wipe the harddrive to "out of the box" condition and keep OS X. I do NOT have the original disks that came with the laptop.
Since I'm a noob to Mac, what's the best way to format and/or wipe the drive of all the previous users junk and start over without bricking the laptop (since I don't have the original cd's)??
Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions!!
