How to work around "screen" blending mode in CMYK document?

The document has been created in CMYK from the start. But I would like to add "glints" over the image and I normally do this by simplyl setting the "glint layer" to "screen" blending mode (when working in RGB color mode). As you all know, this does not yield desirable results when working in CMYK mode. What is the best way to get this type of effect in CMYK mode? Attached are 2 jpegs to help illustrate my point. (Text and logos have been blurred out).
Here is the "glint layer" which I usually just set to "screen mode" to take out the black, but this does not work in CMYK mode.

Okay so here is the same 2 documents again. The document on the right was the one that I tweeked, (the CMYK one). I used the "img, adjustments, brightness/contrast" and I boosted the contrast up to 100% which I feel got me the rest of the way there. This is very close to the RGB effect on the left and I feel that with a tiny bit more tweeking I can get this to work. Thank you all for your help and suggestions. I am going to credit c.pfaffenbichler with the correct answer as his comment was the one that helped me personally the most. Thank you guys for the excellent help.
So once again to clarify the correct answer. Create the doc in CMYK, grab your "glint layer". Adjust the curves and then maximize the contrast and then set the layer to screen.
Thanks again guys!

  • Screen blend mode as png

    Hi all,
    I am trying to achieve a certain effect with Maxwell Render and Photoshop. What I use from the Maxwell render mxi file are basically these layers:
    Background layer
    and on top of this the light layer:
    When I apply the Screen blend mode to the light layer this is the result:
    My issue is that the final program I need the files for cant do blend modes. I must keep the two files separate. I need the 'background layer' as a jpeg which is obviously no problem but the light layer as a png with alpha channel.
    How can I modify the light layer to basically remove all the black (as it does in 'Screen' blend mode). I need to save it as a png so when I overlay it on the background layer the effect is still the same.
    Thank you for your help!
    Julian

    Thanks for giving it a go [SW],
    Using two jpegs would be simple enough but there are usually multiple light layers where the light overlaps and I have to be able to call on any number of them at one time.
    Up till now I have been using one image with multiple lights over one without lights but I have to manually cut the light layer into pieces to get the transparency and be able to overlap them.
    Using 'select - color range' to select the red in the light layer, copy paste to new layer works quite well but it doesnt end up as clean as the screen layer blend.
    My thought was that if photoshop can tell the black to go transparent in screen blend it should be able to delete it as well.
    I have heard of a windows plugin called alphaworks which sounds promising but cant find anything for mac..
    Any further suggestions would be very much appreciated!

    You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.

  • Dev 6.0: Bug in ReportBuilder (!!!) How to work around ?

    Hi !
    I have a problem with ReportBuilder. After Arrange->Size Objects
    or Arrange->Allign Objects the child object doesn't belong to
    paren frame. There is no such thing in Developer 2000. Can
    anybody help me how to work around it ? It's practically
    impossible to create complicated report.
    Thanks in advance.

    I don't know is it's possible to just search and replace as part of the checkout. We do it the other way around. Each user uses his own directory but for jdev all development is done in /mnt_dev/...
    So you map the users development directory to /mnt_dev. this way the path information stays constant and you don't need change the environment.

  • ONLY screen blending mode doesn't work...?

    I have Windows 8, and Photoshop CS6. All of my blending modes work, except for Screen. I don't know why it doesn't, but I do use it somewhat frequently, and it's really holding me back at this point.
    Is this related to all the other problems people have been having with Photoshop running on Windows 8? Or is this an issue that I'm going to have to fix myself, somehow?
    Thanks!

    Do you see the problem if you disable the [  ] Use Graphics Processor setting entirely (remembering to restart Photoshop before testing)?
    What video card (aka graphics adapter) do you have in your system?
    What driver version are you running?
    Have you looked for alternative versions e.g., on nVidia.com or AMD.com?

  • How? Contour Gradient Work-Around/Controlling Blend Characteristics

    I'm trying to create a contour gradient work-around, somewhat successfully, but not yet happy with the results. Here's my method: create a closed path with the pen tool, (in this case, a four point path shaped something like a banana with the ends cut off,) and offset the path with a negative distance. Now I have two closed paths, one "stacked" on the other, the top path identical to the bottom path only smaller. I fill the resulting closed paths with my color choices, then blend the closed paths. Viola! A contour gradient fill! Sort of... The problem is that the gradient bands are not really concentric. In fact, if I release the resulting blended object to layers or use the "Flatten Transparency" command, I find the components no longer consist of four points. Somewhere in the process points have been added to each gradient band and each successive band is a slightly different shape. The resulting blend is not uniform in one corner of my banana! I'm able to get somewhat acceptable results, much closer to concentric, but I have to rotate the paths through trial and error so the longitudinal axis of the stacked paths is oriented vertically, then blend them. Then I have to rotate the object back to its original orientation to fit it back in its place among all the other elements of my illustration. Tedious and inexact without a crib sheet full of rotational degrees and XY coordinates. SO... my question- Is there some way to control the blend without all the rotating and frustration? Illustrator 13.0.2, Mac OS 10.5.3, G4 Powerbook, 2 gigs RAM

    > However, the more "out of square" or "curvier" the objects are, the more points offset path adds. I don't pretend to know how any of this works, but I suppose the added points are necessary....
    Depending on the shape, simple geometry issues may require additional anchorPoints to be created. But that is not what Jesse is alluding to. CS3's included "improvements" made ostensibly to provide a frequently-requested ability to convert dashed strokes to closed paths. In the process, the longstanding and far more important normal offset path functionality was wrecked.
    It's a serious and destructive bug, plain and simple. It's a product defect that evidently will not be corrected as it should. Users will no doubt have to just hope it gets fixed in the next pay-for major version.
    > FH does the same thing.
    FH similarly adds points where the geometry requires. But FH does not commit the kind of feature-debilitating path damage that AI CS3 does.

  • Merging down Screen blending mode

    Here is a problem I face professionally all the time. I have seen it solved only once and never found out how it was done. Maybe some one can shed some light on this for me. I will use a hypothectical file for an example.
    I have a photo from a photo shoot of a plane with no landing lights on. That is masked out and is layer 01.
    Then I place a photo of a night sky in the background.
    I adjust the color of the plane to look like it is taken at night. Looks perfect!
    Then I take a separate photo taken directly into a shining light with all the wonderful natural golden auras and flares. I place the photo of the light over where the plane would have landing lights and put the photo of the light on SCREEN MODE.
    Adjust curves and PRESTO it looks beautiful.
    Now here is the problem! Say I want this to be moveable by my clients down the line. I want only 2 layers. The sky background and the plane with lights. I apply all my color to the plane and apply the mask. But HOW do i apply the screen layer to the plane so it is just 1 layer and can move all over the background and still be see thru and get all the wonderful look the blending modes give you? So no matter where you move the layer it interacts correctly with the background layer.
    I can not flatten every thing, nor can i copy merge the background on to a separate layer and clip it too the lights. They must be applyed to the plane layer and still look just like they do in SCREEN MODE.
    I know this is very advanced. But I work on advanced stuff.
    Thanks.

    >We only deliver files that are idiot proof.
    <br />
    <br />That sounds like a flattened file to me....
    <br />
    <br />Can't the client use the eraser tool, convert color space, assign profile, paint with brush? If you lock the layer's transparency and pixels (leaving only move as an option), and then drop them in a group, you've made it pretty hard to f-up. If you want to be extra paranoid, embed a set of layer groups and lock those too. Then they've got two hoops to jump through. Or another iteration. Now three!

    <img alt="Picture hosted by Pixentral" src="http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1v0QVfjiQcbLNfrzfGEgFIxSWzV0_thumb.png" border="0" />
    <br />
    <br />Blending modes are calculations based on two layers' pixel values. Think about what you're asking--it seems absolutely impossible to me. You can approximate it many ways. Set the lights to screen over black and then select their luminosity, then copy/paste. Or run the peel off black filter and set them up that way. But they'll blend as normal then.

  • Fireworks PNG - FXG - FC. It Works! With Blend modes!=)

    but it has some isues...
    1) blend modes problem: if you put on object some COLOR BURN IT READS IT AS  blendMode="-1"  and you get picture of blanc screen and library of empty groups and so on. the point is it does not work... (so if you had any powers to edit the code you might solve the problen)
    2) if it has any style on the object it turns it into a bit map...
    3) no round corners transport
    but ewerething else is great... with help of fb then it can be turned into a sweet candy

  • How to keep Opacity and Blending Mode values

    Hi!
    I'm working with shades/highlights and since I have to make many shapes with the same values of color, opacity, blending mode, I wonder how can I make it to keep them configured, so I dont have to go to each path and change the values every time. The only value that stays is the color, but for example, the opacity changes everytime I start a new shape with the pen tool, and as I said, I'm working with shadings for a portrait, so I have to make lots of shapes with the same characteristics. Does somebody know a way to set these values and keep them "by default" so to say??
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you, it's just what I was looking for!

  • How to work around audio sounding worse in Logic?

    Hi Folks
    We just bought Logic 8 for its MIDI, composing/scoring and loop/instrument resources. Have used Nuendo for 5 years, for audio for video, which has included some music creation.
    I did some quick recording/playback audio tests and here's how I hear the results:
    Voice recorded and played back in Nuendo sounds just like live. Voice recorded in Logic and played back in Logic sounds relatively flat and digital. Voice recorded in Nuendo and played back in Logic sounds relatively flat and digital. Voice recorded in Logic, exported as a file and played back in Nuendo sounds just like live voice and like it was recorded in Nuendo.
    So how do you work around the crummy sounding audio in Logic? Is the problem only the audio playback within Logic? Do you compose in Logic, export as files and then mix in another app? If so, which app? Or do you know the export will sound better outside of Logic? Or what other adaptation have people come to?
    Thanks for reading.

    No audio problems with Logic Pro 8 my side. In fact, it is sounding somehow better than Logic Pro 7 and latency is better. 44/48/96 all sounds great! Bus, FX, output, EXS24, etc. etc. -- wonderful stuff.
    Interface wise everything is at my finger tips and I didn't have to do anything to get my control surfaces to work (Mackie). Everything makes sense -- huge improvement over LP7. Really helps me explore being creative.
    So far Logic Pro 8 is an amazing step forward -- good work Apple.
    Thank you Apple.

  • How to add keyframes on blending Mode (Normal, Soft Light etc)

    Hi All,
    How can I add keyframes on blending mode? I have a movie layer and need it to start from Soft Light with sooth transition to Normal or Hard Light in a few seconds.How can I do this?
    Thanks
    Andy

    Thank you. I have found another way here:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103906c6dea-7d0aa.htm l
    "You can’t directly animate blending modes by using keyframes. To change a blending mode at a certain time, split the layer at that time and apply the new blending mode to the part of the layer that continues. You can also use the Compound Arithmetic effect, the results of which are similar to the results of blending modes but can change over time."
    Have you tried that? which way is preferrable quality-wise?

  • 200ms delay in windows tcp ip - how to work around?

    I have just found out the hard way that there is a inherent 200ms delay in sending TCP/IP messages on windows machines. Work arounds for this are:
    1. Play with the registry settings for the TCP Receive Window;
    2. Set the TCP_NODELAY via the wsock32.dll (or on socket establishment), or
    3. Write my own TCP library in C.
    My preferred option is #2 as the others defeat the purpose of LabVIEW, however the wsock32.dll functions require the SOCKET reference as an input - I am not sure what the connection ID returned by the LabVIEW TCP functions is - can someone help me??
    Cheers,
    Wayne

    Wayne,
    I am hoping that you have already heard back from Austraia support, but I will post here as well.
    LabVIEW has the Nagle algorithm on by default. We have written a VI that will turn it off. Please see KnowledageBase 2ZAH5EEG: Do LabVIEW TCP Functions Use the Nagle Algorithm?. This should resolve your issue.

    You have to set the indent level on the factory, see bug #6296446. This only affects 1.5; 1.6 allows you to set the indent level on the transformer, as you did (and for cross-version compatibility, setting it on both doesn't hurt).
    transfac.setAttribute("indent-number", Integer.valueOf(4));
