How to write a Date in the database?

Here's my method:
public void insertAlerta(long hora) {
    try {
       Connection con =this.hodbcm.askForConnection("BDataSource").con;
       PreparedStatement ps =con.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Alerta( hora ) SELECT ? ");
       Date hora2 = new Date(hora);
       ps.setDate(1,hora2);
       ps.execute();
    }catch(Exception e) {
       System.out.println(e.toString());
}it returns java.sql.SQLException: General error, can anyone solve this? I have tried writing long, double and String in the database but all return error

PreparedStatement ps =con.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Alerta(hora) VALUES '12/25/2003'");
ps.execute();
or
PreparedStatement ps =con.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Alerta(hora) VALUES '2003-12-25'");
ps.execute();
or whatever your database likes (SELECT Hora FROM Alerta will show you what it likes)
Next, try
PreparedStatement ps =con.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Alerta(hora) VALUES '?'");
ps.setString(1, "whatever worked above");
ps.execute();
Next
PreparedStatement ps =con.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Alerta(hora) VALUES '?'");
SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-mm-dd");
String today = sdf.format(new Date());
ps.setString(1, today);
ps.execute();
