How to write on... well... writing?

Hello–
I'm trying to create some sort of effect where when I write something in the air with my finger, it is written on screen as a paint stroke or equivalent. The closest I have come has been doing the following:
1) Motion track my finger
2) Create an emitter of a circle with a bit of feathering
3) Crank up the birth rate, set speed to 0
4) Apply a match move to the emitter that matches the position of the finger
This creates a smooth line that follows my finger perfectly, but I can't figure out how to stop the emitter from emitting at the end of the motion track. It just continues to emit in place.
So, is there a simpler way to achieve the same effect, or is there a way to stop the emitter from emitting, but leave the line it has created on screen? I'd really like to use some of the light effects that can be put on a paint stroke if possible.
A quick video of what I have so far is at: http://blip.tv/file/667686/
Thanks!!
Prismi

Thank you for that link.
From my description you would think that I had seen his tutorial before trying it myself! We did the exact same thing...
The glow stuff was very neat, and will definitely come in handy.
Thanks

  • Can anyone share with me how you  write Javadoc?

    Can anyone share with me how their companies write Javadoc?
    Are your developers solely responsible for it? Do your technical writers own it or review it? How do you make sure it's good?
    Right now, my software developers are mostly responsible for writing all the API info and it's of poor quality and really lacking details. I don't mean spelling/grammar-type problems. My developers just don't seem to "get" what information to include, no matter how many guidelines or checklists I give them.
    A very simple example is:
    * Gets the status
    public java.lang.Integer getStatus() {...}With no indication of what status values may be returned and what the values might mean.
    How do you ensure that what you write is actually useful? Please help!
    I'm aware of the method Sun recommends, but I want to know what others do.
    Thank you

    Hi,
    Well, concerning the question what a good API documentation should be. Just imagine, you are a programmer and you want to use that API. You need to know how it works. There can be only three ways to find it:
    (1) The API documentation
    (2) Probing experiments. Even a good documentation may not describe everything. Sometimes, the only way to understand certain things you particularly need may be guessing something, writing a code basing on it and see how it works. Then, guessing something again, more precisely now, and so on. Even a very good documented API (for instance, javax.swing) may require that sort of approach to be able to use it eventually.
    (3) At last, when source codes are available, one may look at them and try to understand precisely, what a particular method actually does.
    I think the better the API documentation the less one may need to endeavor those two last steps. There is actually a limit about it. Without any proper explanation at all, one may never be able to use a particular API, neither after probing it nor after looking at source codes (that is not to say the sources may be simple unavailable at all).
    Concerning how to write the API documentation, that's mostly the question of managing your team. I think, basically, the original source of the ultimate information about everything implemented in the projects are those very programmers (developers) and, probably, some software architects. But those guys normally are not especially eager to write any documentation (especially developers). That your example just demonstrates it. It seems, your programmers just wrote that "Gets the status" for you to make them leave in rest after that. In addition, the programmers normally have such a sort of work and activity that does not match particularly well with the writing literature and doing their main job simultaneously. You should not enforce them to do that!
    To write a good documentation, you will need to engage a technical writer. That's normally a guy with some programming background. However, writing some literature is actually what he does the best. (Sometimes, such people do something else about written word beyond the technical writing.) The job of that guy would be to write the documentation. This will take from him (or her) two basic things:
    (1) The ability to understand the whole software system (that's where his programming background will be needed!);
    (2) To communicate with the programmers who have developed the stuff and to obtain from them all the necessary information they know. That may require some personal (verbal) communication with them, because asking them to write everything again will only result in the same "Gets the status" explanations. However, to be successful in this, the technical writer needs to have some explicit management approval behind him. Otherwise, some of the guys will avoid speaking to him at all (saying they lack the time). So, the management should assign them the necessary priority for such communications.
    Particularly big projects may even need to have the whole team of technical writers.
    Anyway, writing docs is a hard work. But it is extremely important! The good documentation may both increase your sales and eliminate lots of expense on further support of your customers.

  • How to call the DLL writing in Vb6.0 from testsatnd?

    Hi,
    I want to call a dll writting in VB6.0 from teststand. But as i see from the "Step Setting" in teststand, only the C/C++ Dll can be selected in the "adapter" type. I try to use this one as my adapter to call my VB6.0 dll, in result, there is no function can be seen in the "function" tab in teststand.Anyone know how to call the DLL writing in Vb6.0?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Ivan,
    Just to be sure that your DLL is not wrong
    you have check if all functions are well and present.
    There is  tool called "Dependency Walker"   You can download it at http://dependencywalker.com/ .
    With it you can look "inside" your dll
    If you will see your functions there, you will see them (in my case !!always!!) in TestStand, too.
    Hope this helps

  • How to write professional documentation for java

    Hi, I have few application I need to write documentation for. Im ok with the user and serwer technical stuff. But how to write proper documentation for source code? Any tutorial or howto?
    Best regards.

    Phenom7 wrote:
    Hi, I have few application I need to write documentation for. Im ok with the user and serwer technical stuff. But how to write proper documentation for source code? Any tutorial or howto?A pointer: be explicit and specific when writing Javadocs. If your method never returns null, make sure you say so. If it can't accept null as a parameter, be sure to say what the consequence will be if it happens (but it's OK to say the result is undefined!). A well-written method Javadoc will make users of any API you make a lot more happy, rather than keeping them guessing or making them inspect your source code.
    It's expected that while the implementation of a method will change, its pre and post-conditions will not. Therefore, having a good method-level Javadoc is critical to both the people counting on your code and the people maintaining your code.

  • How to write a pgm to change the existing encrypted password

    Hi all,
    can anybody tell me how to write a pgm to change the existing encrypted password.
    thanks in advance.

    Well, it's going to depend on how it's implemented in the current system.
    But basically it's going to look a lot like the current login actions. Presumably you have something that takes the user ID and password, encrypts the password, looks up the encrypted password in the database matching that user ID, and compares them. This functionality would also take a new password (preferably twice so they can be checked for consistency), and if the existing encrypted passwords match, it will encrypt the new password and put it in the database where the old one was.
    And if the application has a mechanism for new users to sign up, it'll look a lot like this as well.
    But I'm just guessing. This is all going to depend on how the existing functionality is written. Probably the best thing you can do is talk to a programmer at your organization who has worked on the application, and ask them for help.
    Hope this helps anyway.

  • How to write a sql query to retrieve data entered in the past 2 weeks

    Hi,
    I have file names and last accessed date(java.sql.Date format) stored in my database table, I would like to know how I can write a query to get the name of files accessed in the past 2 weeks,I use open sql server at the back end.
    Thanks in advance.

    This has essentially nothing to do with JDBC. JDBC is just an API to execute the SQL language using Java and thus interact with the databases.
    Your problem is related to the SQL language, you don't know how to write the SQL language. I suggest you to go through a SQL tutorial (there is one at w3schools.com) and to read the SQL documentation which come along with the database in question. A decent database manfacturer has a website and probably also a discussion forum / mailinglist as well.
    I'll give you a hint: you can just use equality operators in SQL like everywhere. For example: "WHERE date < somedate".

  • Really need help on how to write this program some 1 plz help me out here.

    i am new to java and i confused on how to be writing this program.
    i have completed the Part 1 but i am stuck on Part 2 & 3 so it would would be really great if any 1 could help me out on how to write the program.
    Part I
    An algorithm describes how a problem is solved in terms of the actions to be executed, and it specifies the order in which the actions should be executed. An algorithm must be detailed enough so that you can "walk" through the algorithm with test data. This means the algorithm must include all the necessary calculations.
    Here is an algorithm that calculates the cost of a rectangular window. The
    total cost of a window is based on two prices; the cost of the glass plus the cost of the metal frame around the glass. The glass is 50 cents per
    square inch (area) and the metal frame is 75 cents per inch (perimeter).
    The length and width of the window will be entered by the user. The
    output of the program should be the length and width (entered by the user)
    and the total cost of the window.
    FORMULAS:
    area = length times width perimeter = 2 times (length plus width)
    Here is the corresponding algorithm:
    read in the length of the window in inches
    read in the width of the window in inches
    compute the area
    compute the cost of the glass (area times 50 cents)
    compute the perimeter
    compute the cost of the frame (perimeter times 75 cents)
    compute the total cost of the window (cost of glass plus cost of frame)
    display the length, width and total cost
    The next step would be to "desk check" the algorithm. First you would need to make up the "test data". For this algorithm, the test data would involve making up a length and a width, and then calculating the cost of the window based on those values. The results are computing by hand or using a calculator. The results of your test data are always calculated before translating your algorithm into a programming language. Here is an example of the test data for the problem given:
    length = 10
    width = 20
    area = 200, glass cost= 100.00 (area times 50 cents)
    perimeter = 60, frame cost = 45.00 (perimeter times 75 cents)
    total cost =145.00
    Once the test data is chosen, you should "walk" through the algorithm using the test data to see if the algorithm produces the same answers that you obtained from your calculations.
    If the results are the same, then you would begin translating your algorithm into a programming language. If the results are not the same, then you would attempt to find out what part of the algorithm is incorrect and correct it. It is also
    necessary to re-check your hand calculations.
    Each time you revise your algorithm, you should walk through it with your test data again. You keep revising your algorithm until it produces the same answers as your test data.
    ?Now write and submit a Java program that will calculate the cost of a rectangular window according to the algorithm explained. Be sure to prompt for input and label your output.?
    Part II
    Write, compile and execute a Java program that displays the following prompts:
    Enter an integer.
    Enter a second integer
    Enter a third integer.
    Enter a fourth integer.
    After each prompt is displayed, your program should use the nextint method of the Scanner class to accept a number from the keyboard for the displayed
    prompt. After the fourth integer has been entered, your program should calculate and display the average of the four integers and the value of the first integer entered raised to the power of the second integer entered. The average and result of raising to a power should be included in an appropriate messages
    (labels).
    Sample Test Data:
    Set 1: 100 100 100 100
    Set 2: 100 0 100 0
    Be sure to write an algorithm first before attempting to write the Java code. Walk through your algorithm with test data to be sure it works as anticipated.
    Part III
    Repeat Part lI but only calculate the average, not the power. This time, make sure to use the same variable name, number, for each of the four numbers input. Also use the variable sum for the sum of the numbers. (Hint: To do this, you may use the statement sum = sum + number after each number is read.)
    For Part 1 this is what i got
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public class Window
         public static void main(String[] args)
              double length, width, glass_cost, perimeter, frame_cost, area, total;
              Scanner keyboard = new Scanner (System.in);
              System.out.println("Enter the length of the window in inches");
              length = keyboard.nextInt();
              System.out.println("Enter the width of the window in inches");
              width = keyboard.nextInt();
              area = length * width;
              glass_cost = area * .5;
              perimeter = 2 * (length + width);
              frame_cost = perimeter * .75;
              total = glass_cost + frame_cost;
                   System.out.println("The Length of the window is " + length + "inches");
                   System.out.println("The Width of the window is " + length + "inches");
                   System.out.println("The total cost of the window is $ " + total);
         Enter the length of the window in inches
         5
         Enter the width of the window in inches
         8
         The Length of the window is 5.0inches
         The Width of the window is 5.0inches
         The total cost of the window is $ 39.5
    Press any key to continue . . .

  • How to write list values to a text file?

    Hi. Does anyone know how to write values stored in a List to a text file? I have a program that asks the user to enter a name and stores it in a list. The number of names in the list depends on how many times the user wants to enter a name. The problem is that my writeToFile method, which handles writing values to a text file, only writes one name and overwrites any previous names. How could I fix this so that it goes thru the list and writes every value to the file? Any hints would be appreciated!
    peace
    Chris
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class StoreNames
    String name;
    char answer;
    BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
    public void anotherName(List a)throws IOException
    System.out.println("Enter another name? (Y or N)");
    answer = (char)System.in.read();
    System.in.skip(2);
    while(answer == 'Y' || answer == 'y')
    inputName(a);
    System.out.println("Enter another name? (Y or N)");
    answer = (char)System.in.read();
    System.in.skip(2);
    if (answer == 'N' || answer == 'n')
    System.out.println("Ok. GoodBye");
    writeToFile(a);
    //prompts user to input names
    public void inputName(List a) throws IOException
    System.out.print("Enter a name: ");
    name = input.readLine();
    a.add(name);
    public void writeToFile(List a)throws IOException
    PrintWriter output = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter("names.txt"));
    output.print(name); //Problem area - handles only one line of input, overwrites previous input
    output.close();

    System.out is an instance of PrintStream (check the API documents for the System class to see this).
    So the easiest way to convert from a "print to screen" class to a "print to file" class is to acquire a PrintStream that prints to a file, and use it exactly the same as you'd have used System.out...
    So start with your console code...
            PrintStream out = System.out;
            for(int i = 0; i <10; i++){
                out.println("Number " +i);
            }Then you adapt to file code:
            FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream("temp.txt");
            PrintStream out = new PrintStream(fos);
            for(int i = 0; i <10; i++){
                out.println("Number " +i);
            out.flush();
            out.close();Note that we flush the stream because for reasons of efficiency files aren't necessarily written to disk until you explicitly ask the system to do so (memory is fast, disks are slow, that's why).
    Closing the stream releases system resources associated with it.
    Actually, that's redundant, because close calls flush automatically, but I left it in for clarity.
    Any use ?

  • How to write screenplay - help?

    Hi, I'm back, this time having discovered Adobe Story Free Ed. I'd like to use A Adobe Story to produce my first screenplay, but having never wrote a screenplay in my life, I'm at a loss of how to start.
    this screenplay is about:  an interplanetary "ET" family consisting of  a pair of "ET" parents (who are now grandparents) and their adult "ET"  daughters, an adult Human daughter that the parents adopted in infancy,  and their "ET" son, having recently moved from Earth to a planet called  Acca in the Senuv Galaxy.
    that said, the family's adult human daughter is suffering from a serious  mental illness, such that at the opening of this film, the biological  daughter (a medical doctor) and her husband are trying to comfort the  mom, who is shedding tears over the loss of their human daughter,  Denese, hence the title of this screenplay: Old Denese: bye-bye Baby
    I've just written a few pieces of dialogue, the other day I tried to use Courier  Screenplay that I've d/l with MS-Word, but it seemed to be a no go, that is, courier screenplay wouldn't integrate with MS Word, so that's why I'm trying anew with Adobe Story.
    But what's the first thing I do?
    EDIT - this is for a Sci-Fi film.
    Thanks in advance.
    this is the film adaption of my Photoshop work that I've asked about here in the Photoshop forums here at this site so far since I've been here.

    YouTube is your friend. You can look up "Screenplay formating" for info on how to format or "storytelling", "writing a screenplay", etc on idea about developing a story. Lots of great info from just plain google searches also. To use Adobe Story, there are several (albeit not many) tutorials on how to use the program via YouTube. Taking a class in creative writting would certainly be beneficial for your future too.
    You can also try the following website:
    www.simplyscripts.com
    They have hundreds of free scripts that you can download and read in order to give you ideas on formating and storytelling...it's fantastic from the little I have looked.
    Personally, I am similar to you. I've never written a story or script and have only started to do meaningful videos (mostly health related videos) for youtube.

    1st option try http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990?start=0&tstart=0 Trashing preferences, probably will work.
    2nd option If that doesn't help you can try http://www.indiscripts.com/post/2009/10/switching-indesigns-ui-language-in-windows but I'm not sure that will help either.
    3rd option get in touch with WinSoft support. http://www.winsoft-international.com/en/support/support-contact.html That is presuming that you registered your product.
    4th option do what Ariel suggested.
    Let us know what happened and what did work.

  • How to write a log using abap mapping

    Hi all.
    in PI 7.1 environment I need to use abap mapping and I wish to write some XML data into a table that I created for logging the data.
    I know that using the abap mapping I can parse an XML file. My question is how to write this table defining a specific method, if it is necessary.
    Any help or suggestion is well appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance for your kind cooperation.
    Regards,
      Giovanni

    hi,
    >> My question is how to write this table defining a specific method, if it is necessary.
    just like to normal table (insert statement)
    parse XML and get the data you need and just insert into the DB table
    there are many tutorials showing how to parse xml file inside abap mapping
    so just do a little search on sdn
