How use my external Display?

Hey guys,
got a little problem over here... i got a mp pro and a samsung 24" display... it is connected via dvi and works properly. Now the thing is: i want the samsung display to be the one whenever i connect it to the macbook (so that the dock and stuff is displayed on the samsung, NOT the mb pro display). Apparantly i am too stupid... i assumed to manage it in the display settings in system preferences... but however i can only "move" the position of the second display... can someone help me??

In Display Preferences, drag the white line representing the menu bar to the display on which you want it to appear.

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • How can I use an external display with my MBP lid closed and disconnected to power?

I know that I can use an external display when my MBP lid is closed and it is connected to power. I was wondering why it does not work when the power cable is removed.
I only use an external display when I am at home so my MBP acts like a Mac Pro or Mac Mini in that way, but it is not good to leave the battery charging constantly on a MBP so I want to disconnect the power and use external display and have the lid closed. Is this possible or do I have to leave my lid open when running on battery power?

I'm plugged into my wall socket at least 90% of the time - probably more. I always make sure that I take my MBP off mains about once every two weeks and let it run down to about 30-40% and then plug it back up. This keeps the ions flowing and the battery healthy. My MBP will be one year old on March 20, 2013, and my battery health is still at 99%. I run in clamshell mode most of the time now - since I bought a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display. Only occasionally am I off mains - and then because I'm exercising my battery, usually.
Don't worry about running of mains most of the time - just be sure and unplug about once every two weeks (or twice a month) and let your battery dip to the 30-40% mark and you'll be fine.
    Good luck,

  • Is there a way to use an external display while keeping the Macbook open?

I'm trying to use my external display as my primary (and only display). I would be operating in clamshell mode, but this can lead to overheating issues. Is there an easy way to leave the Macbook open but turn its screen off manually when another display is connected?
I've found that by closing the macbook, plugging in a mouse, waiting for the macbook to start in clamshell mode, and then opening the display, I can do this. Is there an easier way (i.e., an option to tell the macbook display to turn off)

could you not just connect it with the vga adapter and then turn the brightness of your screen all the way down so there is no light? i had to do that for my ibook g4 when i cracked the lcd, but thankfully i have my macbook now.

  • Can no longer use an external display in closed clamshell mode

    Hi,
I have this weird problem that just started couple days ago.
I own a MacBook Pro Early 2011 since March.
It's always hooked up to an external display and the MacBook Pro's LCD is turned off (closed clamshell mode).
Lately, if the MacBook Pro's LCD is turned off, the external display won't show anything.
But as soon as I open the lid, the external display will then mirror the MacBook Pro LCD.
If I close back the lid, the external display will get blank.
I also tried to change the display settings with no luck.
In other words, I can no longer use my external display with the MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode.
I'm wondering if someone experienced this problem before.  Thanks for help.

    Hello sebastieng
Open both, your MBP connected to the external screen. Open Preferences click here on "Displays" and then make the external Window to the main window by dragging the bar (line?) on top of the laptop window to the external window, which makes the second window the main window.

  • Using an external display with the macbook air

hi, i wanna know if i can use an external display with the macbook air as the tunderbolt is a bit pricey? i was thinking about buyin a LCD moniter wih a VGA port. many thanks

Yes.  You can use VGA DVI or HDMI monitors by buying a  Minidisplay port to xxx adapter and the the appropriate cable (vga, dvi or hdmi).
The MiniDisplayport adapter plugs into the Thunderbolt port.

Here's a sample HDMI adapter.  All these available in the Apple online store.

  • Using an external display

Whats the highest resolution external display that the eMac can support? Because I wanted to use the external display as a main screen and set the eMac in the floor.
Also, does anyone recommend a widescreen external diplay?

    Hi cosmic,
when I was still using my eMac I had it hooked-up to 23" monitor & the rez. on that one was 1440 x ? (don't remember the height). I was surprised that it could do it (that's why I can remember the width).

  • Use an external display ///

    hi guys,
i am about to buy an external display for my old powerbook but i was asking myself if all the menu top bar of all my applications could be controlled from the external display ... u get my point ?
if i ask you that , its because my laptop display is a bit broken at the top , its why i want to use external display ... cause now in all the applications the top menu bar is hidden by the screen bug/crash ... u get it ? ... and i dont wanna pay for an new 17 display , too old model u get my point ...
ty 4 your help guys ...

I use an external display also, but I have a Feb 2007 MBP. I can close my MBP (putting my MBP to sleep thus the external display also turns off) and click my remote or my external mouse or keyboard to wake it up. Since the MBP is closed it automatically sets the external display as primary with all menus. I'm not sure if your older Mac will operate the same way. I hope this gives u a better idea of what decision to make or what else to try or ask before making that decision.
    Have Fun!

I would like to darken my Mac Air screen, so I can use may external display and the keyboard on the notebook--it is possible on a PC-does it work on a Mac?

    Sure it's possible.
Go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo on the top left of the menu).
Choose "Display".  There's a slider bar for the screen brightness.  Adjust it and you're all set.

  • Can you use any external display with a macbook?

    hi all,
I was just wondering, can you use any external display with a macbook? (i.e. gateway, and dell displays?)

    To original poster:
    Yes.
Provided you have the appropriate ports and cables, that is. Some monitors do not have all vga, dvi-i, dvi-d, hdmi, etc. ports, and it can be misleading that all those technologies appear to be compatible via conversion cables (they aren't all meant to be compatible, so look it up on the internet before buying).
    Cheers,

  • How to change external display resolution WITHOUT clicking "CONFIRM"?

I have a somewhat unusual situation. My MacBook laptop is actually now a ModBook (a pen-tablet computer), and as such I no longer have a trackpad attached to it. All of my inputs are via the stylus, tapping directly on the built-in display.
This works perfectly fine, except when I need to give presentations on an LCD projector (which is quite often lately). I like to use the projector as an external monitor, so that I can run the Keynote presentation on it while using my laptop screen as the presenter's display, with the upcoming slide, etc. If the projector doesn't give me an ideal native display option (sometimes, the aspect ratio for the  3 or 4 resolutions available in the Displays drop-down in the menubar turn out to be stretched or squeezed), then I, naturally, have to open the Display System Preferences and try out different resolutions.
The problem is, since my stylus only interacts by clicking directly on the built-in-display, I have no way of moving the cursor over to the external display when the dialog box with the "Click here to confirm change/You have 15 seconds..." message appears. So I can never click it ... so I can never confirm the new settings.
The workarounds I've used so far are:
    - Mirror displays (not ideal, as I need the presenter preview of the next slide)
    - borrow a mouse from someone (usually from a Windows desktop, frankly) and plug that in to briefly mouse over and click the confirm button
I'd love to find a software workaround that allows me to NOT mirror displays and also doesn't require me to carry around a mouse all the time (my laptop bag is already overstuffed...).
    Thanks.

How to change the display resolution of APEX ??APEX doesn't have a display resolution. "Display resolution" is an attribute of the device and user agent software used to view the APEX page.
What do you mean by "the display resolution of APEX"?
In other word, if an end user sees large elements on a pageWhat "large elements"?
    then he/she zooms it outHow?
"Zooms" what—the entire page or a single "large element"?
How can I set a proper ZOOM for my app by default ...Meaning what?

  • Satellite L500 - How to show external display after closing lid?

    Hi,
i`m using the Satellite L500-120 Notebook, and before installing Windows 7 the laptop had a very comfortable function, when i applied an external display.
When i closed the lid of my notebook, the desktop was shown on my external display (with the native resolution of the external display), so i didn`t have to
switch anything at the Control Panel. In Windows 7, i`m missing this function. I already tried to use the Control Panel, but there are no settings, which fits
with the earlier ones. I can duplicate the display, in order to see my desktop screen at my external display, but with the notebook resolution of 1366 x 768.
If i extend the displays, then there is only the background image at the external display, but this time with the native resolution.
So my question is, how to conifgure Windows to recognize that i closed the lid, and that the desktop screen has to be shown on my external display?
Or do i have to install one of the Toshiba applications, which i had before, that realized this function?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi
Im not a Windows 7 user because I will wait until it will be released offical but I hope I can help you a little bit:
First of all in Power Management you can choose the action what happens if you close the Lid (e. g. sleep, turn off, etc.). This action should be disabled because otherwise the notebook will shut down or something else.
Then I think you have to install the display driver for your notebook. You can try the Vista driver because the most of them are work on Windows 7.
Then you should be able to set the correct screen resolution for external monitor.
A working display driver is important for clone or extends monitors so check this!!

  • Using an external display with a 2006 iMac?

(Scenario in paragraph one, question in paragraph two)
I've got a problem trying to get data off an old iMac, and don't see an obvious solution... I have an old 2006 iMac that's been unused for years, and the display quit working about a year ago. I'm trying to just get the data off that computer, but my current 'main' computer's a MacBook Air that doesn't have an Ethernet port, so direct connection is out. I could try to move a couple hundred GB over wifi, but the wifi in the old iMac is an old wifi standard that takes forever, and tends to error out when transferring data over hours of time (I've tried).
Thus my question: The old iMac has a mini-DVI-out port, but the challenge is how to switch to an external display, when I don't have a display to navigate through settings? Is there a keyboard shortcut, or something? I've looked online, but can't find any solutions. I've got a mini-DVI-to-VGA cable, and a VGA-capable monitor, but when I plug the Mini-DVI into the iMac, to the VGA, nothing happens. I'm guessing I need to go to preferences, and select video-out? But that's impossible (as far as I've tried) with a display to navigate on the iMac.
Some miscellany: Someone suggested Command-F2 for something monitor-switching-related, but that did nothing. Someone at work thought that the signal from the DVI out might not work with the Gateway FPD1760 I'm trying to use as an external display...
    Any suggestions/help would be appreciated!

So the various 'F2', 'Command-F7', etc, etc, didn't work. But I did find a simple solution: I used my Fiancé’s MacBook Pro that has an Ethernet port, connected via Command-k, and transferred about 40GB so far. Pretty painless, and I can get dthe data to one of my multiple-TB external drives from her computer. Using her computer hadn't entered my mind...
Disappointing that I couldn't get the video out to work, but at least I'm getting the data off. I'm going to try the 'firewire/Target mode' idea later, when I need to erase the drive, etc.
    Thanks for the help!
