How well will this MacBook Pro run FCPX?

The specs for the MacBook Pro I am using are here:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i7-2.3- 15-dual-graphics-late-2013-retina-display-specs.html
Thanks!

This will run FCP X beautifully.
You should get at least a fast USB3 hard drive. The internal SSD is extremely fast, but will fill up quickly.
It is not usually recommended to use the boot drive to hold your video. The raw speed of the SSD changes this a bit, but space is a concern, plus a full SSD is a slow SSD (this goes for hard drives too, although for different reasons).

  • How long will this MacBook Pro last me?

I recently have received a mid-2009 macbook pro as a gift. I have upgraded the software to Mountain Lion (and most likely going to upgrade to Mavericks whenever it comes out). I am going to become a high school senior in the upcoming months. I was wondering how long this laptop would last me! I like gaming, but the graphics aren't that good even on low quality, but I'm sure this laptop will be fine for my last year of high school and til the end of college prehaps?
    Thanks,
    Christopher!
    Edit:
I understand there isn't just a breakdown date or timer, but I am just asking for a guess from the community! Sorry for the confusion if there was any.
    Thank you!

Your machine is about 4 years old and in it's end of life stage for a laptop.
It al depends how much abuse the previous owner did to it, how much wear on the keyboard/Superdrive and on the graphics etc.
I'd say another year or two and it's done.
The reason gaming is bad it's because they are designed for PC towers and the latest graphics which a laptop you can't upgrade.
Also the many OS X operating system versions also has a part as later OS X versions slow down older machines.
If you want to 3D game, then get a PS4 or a Windows 7/8 3D gaming tower and upgrade the video card every couple of years to a better one.
That's the only way, Mac's can't upgrade the video card anymore and new 3D games need better graphics.
The only way one can keep a Mac a very long time is to take exceeding great care of it, all the wear and tear on external devices, then there is a limit to upgrading operating systems and Apple will begin denying security updates as well.
    Good luck

  • How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

MacBook Pro - no problem, it is an extremely popular computer for running that software. Just look at the Adobe demo videos of their products, most of the time you can see a MacBook Pro running the software in their video.
MacBook Air - should be just as good most of the time.
However, if you get involved in heavy Photoshop work like highly stacked layers/masks/channels, 16 bits per channel or up, or merging HDR or panoramas, the MacBook Pro may be better because it can take 16GB RAM while the MacBook Air can take only 8GB RAM.
Also, if you are going to do serious programming in XCode or Dreamweaver, you may find the MacBook Air screen to be too small for all of the code windows and tool palettes that you may want to open and arrange in those programs. The 15" Retina screen of the MacBook Pro will let you spread out your work and do less window switching. The 11/"13" MacBook Air screens are both smaller and non-Retina so not as sharp.
Even Photoshop is nicer on the 15" MacBook Pro because of the extra screen space for the image with less intrusion by the tool palettes.
In short, if you are a casual user the MacBook Air will be great. If you are a professional with a heavy workload the MacBook Pro may be more efficient overall due to the larger screen and higher RAM capacity.

  • Will This Macbook Pro Keep Up For My Tasks In Mind

Ok im thinking about this macbook pro 13" 2.4ghz 4gb ram. I need it for editing my 44mbps canon t2i 1080p video on FCP CS5 aswell as 18mp raw files edited on PS CS5. i hate lag but cant afford the 15" i5 model. So wil this laptop be able to handle my work tast thanks in advance.

That machine will handle your Photoshop stuff just fine, but it's not what you want for fast turnover in FCP.

  • How do you keep macbook pro running quickly

I always thought that using a MAC would eliminate the need to re-image a machine like you have to do with Windows. However, my recently purchased MacBook Pro 13" retina display with 8Gb RAM, 3Ghz i7 processor is already beginning to slow down - just like a Windows laptop. I have used MacKeeper in the past, and that has improved the performance of previous MacBook Air's that I had. However, I have been warned off MacKeeper (anyone have any evidence that this is a real, solid, non-invasive application that is safe to run?).
Just need some help in how to keep this great machine humming - it's only 2 months old!
    Thanks

Basically... Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
This is what Apple has to say.

  • Will new MAcBook Pro run Adobe Master Collection

    Hi
I have a Mac and have just started a course learning Adobe applications, however the course sent me notes and software for Master Collection (PC Version).
Will the new MacBook Pro's with 4GB of RAM run all these applications fast via bootcamp?
Any advice would be much appreciated before I spend a lot of money.
    Thanks.

"just called AppleStore and two different people there assured me that Windows Vista 64 wont run on Bootcamp but 32 will. They also both said that under Vista 32 via Bootcamp, my 4GB of RAM will be available?"
Those people at the Apple store are misinformed. If you have new, just released last week, MBPro you can install Vista x64. Other wise my computer that has Vista x64 on working it must be a figment of my imagination.

  • Will a macbook pro running simcity 2013 overheat or lag due to heat?

I have a macbook pro will a core i5 proccesor ad 4g of ram. My graphics card is a intel HD 4000. would simcity overheat my macbook pro or would the game lag on it due to heat? I wish to play the game about 30 min or more straight without closing the game.

My 2013 macbook pro sometimes overheats within 2 minutes of playing... tetris!
It always overheats within half an hour, making the game unplayable due to lag.

  • How well does the MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz run games?

I am quite interetested because from the looks of the specs, it doesn't have the 'muscle' that you would see in a PC. Does it not need the high clocking speeds and memory that a PC needs? I pay quite a few game, mostly FPS and though I have a PC as my main gaming machine, I am wondering if this will be able to play games fluently. Games include (for both PC and Apple) Counter-Strike: Source, America's Army, Battle Field 1942, etc. Sorry if this seems... off.. but I am new to the Apple way.
    -Ryan

Macs until this January ran on PowerPC CPUs, but the switch is on to bring them all into the "Intel inside" world. Apple realized this transition would be very hard for software vendors who would have to recode their products for the new CPUs so they basically bought a company called Transitive for its translation technology, which Apple calls Rosetta.
Under Rosetta PowerPC code is translated to Intel code. This means there is considerable overhead on startup and when new code is needed by the application during use, but it's much faster than emulation which is basically a virtual hardware machine made out of software within the OS - pretty technical, and not fast.
Anyway what you need to know is that PowerPC programs, the vast majority of them, run just fine under Rosetta, but at somewhat of a performance penalty. In something like a text editor this would be almost undetectable, but in a 3D FPS it could really drag down frame rates and overall performance.
The answer is Universal Binaries: programs that are compiled to run natively on both Intel and PowerPC. More and more are released every day. UT2004 patch 3369-3 (I believe it is) is a good example; it's over 100MBs but contains code for both PowerPC and Intel Macs, making the game "hardware agnostic" and giving you great performance on either CPU.
    Hope this explains it.

  • How well does my macbook pro support Civil Engineering programs?

I'm starting college in a few months, and im really hoping macs can be compatible with CAD software and other needed programs. Unfortunately, I do not know the names of the programs I'll have to use. Hopefully you guys will know from experience

If the Mac OS is not compatible with the CAD apps you'll need to run, you can always install Windows using Boot Camp or (perhaps) Parallels desktop. I personally use Parallels to run WinXP and the apps that aren't available for the Mac - namely Adobe's LiveCycle Designer. Use that Mac for college - you'll be the envy of your friends.

I have a Macbook Pro 15" that is three and a half years old.  Although it has slowed a bit, it still runs well and runs every program I need. Any tips for how to keep this old computer running well and in good health?
I have a 250 gig drive and try to keep at least 100 gigs unused at all times, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, back up with Time Machine and CrashPlan, and have OS X 10.7.3.
This was my first Mac since an old Apple II GS.  After that I used PC's and got really good at reformatting, replacing drives, reinstalling, defragging, resolving software conflicts, etc.  Since switching back to Macs (five in my extended family now), I haven't had to do any of those things. So, although, the cost is three times as much, the aggrevation has been ten times less.
I'm retired and living on a fixed income and would therefore like to keep this computer running as opposed to constatntly upgrading.
    That said, any tips?
    Thanks
It does have a crack on the left of the screen case about 3/4'' up from the bottom.  I've posted that as another question.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Adding more RAM, if feasible, and a new, faster hard drive may also help pep it up a little.

  • How well will Mountain Lion run on the following MacBook Pro?

Thinking about biting the bullet and upgrading to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro. My specs are as follows:
    MacBook Pro 15"
    (Late 2008 model MacBookPro5,1)
    Intel core 2 duo 2.53Ghz
    8GB RAM
    1TB HD with 390GB free
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
So, how well will Mountain Lion run on this configuration? Currently I'm finding my computer annoyingly slow, so am wondering whether an upgrade was worth trying or not?
Any advice would be most appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Joe.

Sorry, I should have been clearer - that's what I was thinking, which is why I was asking the question. I thought that if I was going to all the effort of a reformat etc that I should just upgrade to Mountain Lion while I was at it, but didn't want to do that if it was going to run really slowly anyway and then have to go through it all again to go back to Snow Leopard.
    etresoft wrote:
.... Mountain Lion should run fine on that machine.
So, have you had any personal experience of Mountain Lion running fine on this MacBook Pro? I know that officially it will run, but I'm wondering about the "real life" experience of it running on this model.
Anyone out there able to share their expeience?

  • I have screwed up a bunch of settings etc. on macbook pro running preinstalled lion. I think I should is to wipe the computer and reinstall to start over again. I will loose nothing of importance except a few passwords.  Is this wise? How do I do it?

I have screwed up a bunch of settings, folders, photos, etc on my macbook pro running factory installed Lion.  To get everything straightened out, I was thinking I should do a delete and reinstall and just start over like it was a brand new computer.  I will only loose some usermane and password info and my history and cookies.  There is nothing else on the computer that is not on another device somewhere.  Does this sound like the right thing to do?  I cannot seem to find ways to correct the problems indivdually, though I am sure they are there.  If so, how do I do it?  My computer did not come with any type of disc, I do not believe.  Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

    Yes, that sounds reasonable.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process
          has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

my macbook pro running lion will not boot . it stays on the grey page with the cog spinning. I have tried all methods of booting to no avail. I have removed the bottom and taken out the battery and the ram . will this affect my applecare warranty. I had to try myself as I'm overseas for two months and nowhere near any sort of help .

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • Hi, I have macbook Pro, running Leopard OS X. I partitioned my hard drive a while ago to install windows and only allowed myself 10 Gig of data. Anyway, i deleted windows and want another OSX on there instead. How do i make this partition bigger please??

Hi, I have macbook Pro, running Leopard OS X. I partitioned my hard drive a while ago to install windows and only allowed myself 10 Gig of data. I deleted windows after i realised i wasnt enjoying using it at all and wasted my hard drive. I now decided that i want another OSX on there instead yet i have only allowed myself 10 gb on the partition. I have ben thru some programms but am struggling on making this partition bigger.
I only want it at 20gb but cant seem to make the partition bigger, only smaller or split it into further partition.
Is there a way to do this, i have all installation discs from original OSX so think this could help.
Any help please would be fantastic.
    Thanks Chris

Hi, dragging the partition will only make smaller, not larger. In disk utility you can only split or make smaller the partitions. Yes i booted from installation disks also but still no help.
And Brody, I am willing to erase the disc completely, infact jus started doing a backup in order to do so but that failed also. And the information you gave on partition a hard drive, Although very simple and i already know how to do this, but it wont let me make the partition bigger, and i dont want to make a new partition, just enlarge the one i already have, which i dont see possible from disk utility.
Getting really frustrated now, even backing up is saying no to me. **** external being a douche.
I dont mind erasing the hard drive but surely this must be doable without deleting the secondary partition back t a single volume, and re partitioning into 2 volumes again.
    Thanks again
