HOW WILL I BACK UP MY ITUNES LIBRARY TO HARDDRIVE SO I CAN FREE UP SOME SPACE IN MY MAC?

Hi!
My mac is running low in memory space and mostly of the bigger occupants of my laptop are my music collection. Therefore, i want to back it up or transfer it to my external hard drive so i can free up some space. And just play it when connected to my external hard drive. How will i do it?
Also is there a short cut for deleting duplicate songs in my itunes.
Please help thanks.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Note that moving your library to another drive is not "backing up".  Backing up is making a second (or more) copy of your files onto another drive because you know that some day, without warning, your hard drive will suddenly refuse to work or get stolen and you will be sooo happy you spent the $100 in getting a backup drive which will have saved all your files (such as irreplaceable photos).

I would do it manually.  As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.

How do I back-up my itunes library in newest version of itunes?

Fast backup for iTunes library  (Windows)
Grab SyncToy  2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time.
If your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes, regardless of the drive letter or path it appears on.

  • I have a 2tb time capsule wondering how to store a lot of my files and photos on it to free up some space on my hard drive on my iMac

i have a 2tb time capsule wondering how to store a lot of my files and photos on it to free up some space on my hard drive on my iMac

For iMac please use USB or even better a FW800 or if you can afford it, a thunderbolt drive.. on your 2011 Mac.
Time Capsule is not a suitable place to store your files.
    1. You will have no backup.
    2. TC cannot back itself up, nor can Time Machine backup network drives.
    3. Apple says specifically of iphoto not to store library on network drive.
    iphoto network no no.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6692100
    4. Other libraries may not corrupt but will run very slowly. iTunes for example.
Please purchase the fastest drive out of the external ports you have available.. usb2 although the slowest is still faster than TC over gigabit. It is also more reliable. TC are not a noted reliable storage drive. It is designed as a backup location for TM files.

  • Can anyone tell me how to delete previous "keep file" files? Im trying to free up some space on my mac.

Can anyone tell me how to delete previous "keep file" files? Im trying to free up some space on my mac.

You can upgrade to Mavericks free, just run the App Store program and search for Mavericks. But before you do upgrade I recommend the following:
    1) make sure you have a recent backup. TimeMachine is fine.
    2) Mavericks is somewhat more memory hungry than 10.7 was. You will need 4 GB of RAM and I strongly recommend 8 GB.
Go back to the Apple menu and select About this Mac - look under the OS info you just looked at. You'll see how much RAM your computer has now. Then click on the More Info button. There you will see your computer info listed as in: iMac, 21.5" mid 2010, for example. Return back with that information and we can tell you how far the computer can be upgraded.
If you decide to procede and you have enough RAM upgrading to Mavericks is quite simple. Click on the download button and let it do its job.

  • I will format my pc. How do i back up my itunes library?

    Hi.
I'm using a Win XP at my office. :-( I need to format it, and install Win7.
I have music and apps in my itunes folder at this pc.
How I must to backup my itunes library to put it in my pc after the win 7 installation?
    Thanks in advance.
    Federico.

Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer as you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new/rebuilt computer using the same tool used to back it up, ideally before installing iTunes.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.

  • How do I back up my iTunes library to a disk?

I jus t received a Mac book for Christmas and I want to get my itunes library brought over from my Windows PC.  There used to be an option to back up the library to a disk, but it is no longer an option!  How do I get my entire library onto the Mac, with losing all of the other music (that was not purchased on itunes)?

Karen,  If your Windows library is not already consolidated, run the command File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files first.
Now copy your entire iTunes folder to an external hard drive.  Then copy it from there to the same position on the Mac.
This procedure will cause your library to appear on the Mac with all the music as well as with your exisiting playlists, ratings, play counts, etc.
I moved my daughter's library from PC to Mac this way and it worked without a hitch.

  • How do i back up my itunes library to i cloud

ive got itunes for windows how do i back all my music up onto icloud, music bought from itunes and cds that ive put  on. any help appreciated

iTunes is never backed up to iCloud.
iTunes purchases are available for re-download.
If the user wishes to have access to their music at all times from any computer or iDevice with an Internet connection, iTunes Match will permit this.

  • How do you back up the iTunes Library files?

I recently installed Leopard and messed things up so badly that I am considering doing an Erase and Install on my boot drive to get a fresh copy of OSX 10.5 - see topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1317126&tstart=0
I am searching for crucial files that will be lost in the process and backing them up to a second drive. My iTunes Music folder (with all the audio files) is already on my second drive, but I need to preserve my iTunes Library so I don't have to re-enter all the info for them. I planned to back up these files:
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
and then restore them to their proper locations after re-installing 10.5.
Does anyone know if this is the correct way to preserve all your iTunes music and data during a clean install?

Those are certainly the correct files to back up. The iTunes Library database file holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). The iTunes Music Library.xml file is to make your music and playlists available to other applications on your computer. There's more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?

  • How do I back up my itunes library from my iMac to iCloud?

I want to be able to access my iTunes library on my iMac from my iPhone while away from my home network. I don't want to fill my iPhone with the file as it is so big. Can I move my whole iTunes library to iCloud and then access it from both my iMac and my iPhone through the internet? If I do this, can I delete the library from my iMac as it is slowing it down because of its size?

I use the iTunes Match feature which you subscribe $24.99 / year. Works flawlessly! I can upload up to 25.000 songs there to be streamed or downloaded to all of your devices. Mac/iPhone/iPod or iPad. This way you can free storage on the devices. Great quality on the matched songs too. If you sometime in the future should buy a new Apple device, just log in with your account and your music collection is there for you to enjoy! Home or away, the only thing needed is an decent WiFi connection to use all the above.

I have 7.32GB of music file and from the instructions provided for copying my music folder to a dvd, it tells me the dvd is not large enough...duh.....but it doesn't give me the option to use multiple dvd's.  I tried zipping the file but that still doesn't work.
