How would i dual boot a ibook g4

Hi,
I am learning how to use other operating systems like linux, and i want to dual boot my ibook with linux. if i make 2 partitions 1 for mac os x and 1 for linux if i partition it will my data be lost. or could i just keep my os x stuf in one half and put linux on the other. also would i need a bootl oader.

Hello,
You do indeed require a Bootloder. I would recommend the rEEit for use with your iBook.
From what I recall, the Linux disk should place your Mac OS X neatly on it own partition and it leave it intact.
The partition software on the Linux disk, will allow you to select the partition space for your install and remaining will be left for Mac OS X. It's recommend you back up your Mac OS X first before installing Linux for PPC.

  • Satellite L500/013 - How to make dual boot of Windows 7 and XP?

    Hi
I just bougth my first Toshiba laptop, it comes with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed. Before I start spending hours on this, I am just wondering if this can be done:
    1) I would like to use the Windows 7 Professional in 64 bit mode and then
    2) Create second partition on HD to install Windows XP 32 bit on it.
Just wondering about if this is possible and what is the recommended sequence for the install is. First thing I need to do is to create recovery disk for Windows 7, so I assume I need to configure Windows 7 first?
    Thanks for any help
    Thomas

    > First thing I need to do is to create recovery disk for Windows 7, so I assume I need to configure Windows 7 first?
Well, this is strongly recommended!!! Before you would do anything with your HDD you should create the recovery disk!!!
Im not quite sure how you could set up an dual boot using Win 7 because I didnt try this but I did it using Vista.
First of all you have to create an second partition in Vista. This could be done in Disk Management.
Then I installed Win XP on the second partition. But after the XP installation I could not start Vista because Vista boot manager was damage by Win XP.
To fix this I have used a original Vista disk (not recovery disk). I booted the Vista DVD and this has repaired the Vista boot manager. In Vista I have installed EasyBCD.
EsayBCD is a small tool which helped to add the Win XP to the Vistas boot manager.
After new reboot Vista and Win XP appeared in the boot manager and I could choose between both OS.
I think you will need the same procedure using Win 7

  • Satellite Pro A200: How to create Dual boot; Vista & XP using Recovery CD

I have just purchased a Satellite Pro A200 lap-top, which was supplied with Product Recovery disks for both Vista and XP.
The Vista licence specifically also licences XP.
Can I set up a dual boot so that I can boot to either Vista or XP ? If so, how?
I would also like, as a third boot, Red Hat Linux 9.
    Any comments ?

Hmmm. Usually its possible to use two or more operating systems on the computer but as far as I know the Toshiba Vista Recovery CD formats the whole HDD during the Vista installation and this will lead to losing of the installed OS's.
Im not 100% sure about the XP Recovery CD The newest CD called RECO doesnt include expert mode which allows choosing between different partitions.
So I presume every usage of the Recovery CD will format the HDD and will erase the installed data. But of course you could try to install both OS and to check if the XP recovery CD allows choosing second portion for the OS installation.
If it will not function it seems that you will need either an original Microsoft XP CD or the original Vista CD to use both OS.
    Best regards

  • Just loaded windows 7 on a macbook pro - how do you dual boot OS X and windows 7

Hi successfully loaded windows 7 and partitioned drive (I need windows for work Microsoft crm system)
All ok but a pain to have to keep logging off and on between OS X & Windows
I understand that there is a way to dual boot - I am running Snow Leopard on a macbook pro lap top OS x 10.6.7
    Can anyone help please
    Ian

You can install Parallels or Fusion, either will work. When you setup either Parallels or fusion you can tell it to use your already installed Boot Camp installation of Windows as its target guest operating system.
You would then just boot into OSx, start your VM (Parallels or Fusion), then you'll have access to both OSx and Windows without having to reboot.
I have this setup and two monitors. I have my Windows running on my external monitor and OSx running on my Macbook Pro monitor at the same time.
Beware that you will need to re-register Windows to get a second key. This is free and easily done either online or by calling the Microsoft registration number. The reason for needing a second key is that Windows, although only installed once in your Boot Camp partition sees the virtual hardware created by your virtual machine and thinks it has been reinstalled on a new computer.

  • How do I dual boot Mountain Lion

I recenetly purchased a new iMac with Mountain Lion installed on it. My previous Mac runs Lion. I still have a few apps which I need to support older devices for and need to run an earlier version of xCode than is allowed on Mountain Lion. My hope was to setup a dual boot system with both Lion and Mountain Lion to do this. So far I have not been able to figure this out. I've tried to follow walkthroughs on the web, but they were all had Lion and were making a Mountain Lion partition. Any input would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Yep. Your new machine can only be started with the version of Mountain Lion with which it came.
There isn't much you can do. If you wish to spend money you can purchase Parallels 8 for OS X and try running Lion or Snow Leopard in emulation. See Running Lion as a Guest OS in Parallels Desktop 7 - YouTube.

  • How do you dual boot Windows XP on a Mac?

I'd like to know the best way to use dual-booting to run both Windows XP and Mac OS X on my G4 PowerPC machine. First of all, is this even possible with a PowerPC? I don't know if it only works with Intel-based Macs or what... I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to a good, beginners tutorial on dual booting. I have the Windows XP installation disc, a PC, and my Mac.

I won't need to install the Windows XP operating system, will I?
From the website Niel linked: "Q [kju:] emulator is a feature packed Cocoa port of QEMU: Run Linux, Windows, and other systems on your Mac. " Note it says "Run Windows", it doesn't say run Windows programs. I have zero experience in this but my reading of that is that you have to have another OS to install. Q just lets the Mac pretend to be a PC without software. If you want to run a Windows game you have to install Q, then Windows, then the game.
In general emulation is often slow. You're talking about games. If you mean video style games then those can be very demanding I would not expect too much of this kind of setup. Again in the link somebody mentions running it on a G4 and it is slow.

  • How would you know if a ibook motherboard went bad

    how would you know
when i plug in the charger it only stays green and will not power on maybe the battery is bad
is my motherboard bad i hope not i hope it is only the charger

It is more likely a bad DC-in board. This is the part of the iBook that houses the port where you plug in the adapter.
Since the green light on the adapter is coming on, that is an indication that the charger is working as it should. If it were dead, you would see no light.
In my experience, an iBook with a bad DC-in board will run from a charged battery, but the iBook will not run when plugged into the adapter, nor will the adapter charge the battery.
The DC-in board in my husband's iBook failed, but we could swap batteries (since I had an iBook, too), and he could use his iBook normally on a charged battery. We swapped batteries repeatedly, allowing my iBook to charge both batteries, until he was able to get his DC-in board replaced.

  • How should I dual boot Ubuntu + archlinux?

I'm currently on Ubuntu and want to dual boot Arch Linux (already burned the net image to the CD)
What's the easiest and most effective way of doing this? I have a 500GB HDD and I'm willing to give up around 200 for Arch.
I'd like for both systems to use the same SWAP though.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi pimental28
I found that the simplest way to setup Grub for dual boot with Ubuntu (actually Arch, Ubuntu Natty and Win7 in my case) was not to use the Arch Grub installer. I just skipped the option at the end of the installation. In Ubuntu I then ran "grub2 update" or is it "update grub2" I never can remember that one for some reason. Ubuntu then finds Arch and adds an entry for it.
I also used GParted from Ubuntu Live CD to setup the partitions, largely because I am so used to using it. Been a long time since i used fdisk. I then made notes of the partition layout I wanted.
    Hope this helps

  • How can I dual-boot Mac OSX and Linux Mint?

Hey guys, I was wondering if it is possible to dual-boot both OS's similar to OS X and Windows 7/8...but first I'm wondering if it will void my MacBook Air Warranty (w/ AppleCare) as ultimately it wouldn't be worth it then!

Which CD are you trying to use?
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) originally came on DVD.
A media exchange program initially was available:
    http://images.apple.com/macosx/pdf/TigerMediaExchangeFormv5.pdf
So maybe you did an exchange for CDs?

  • How can I dual-boot Windows 7 with pre-Installed Windows 8.1

    Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-B5362 with pre-installed Windows 8.1.
Make DualBoot Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (both 64 bit), so, I don't know how to do this. If I set BIOS to CMOS and Install Windows 7 disabling Secureboot, I will lost all the pre-installed Windows 8.1 and the OEM licence.
and other question... if the upper is not possible. Okay. I will delete Windows 8.1 and Install Windows 7 permanently until Windows 10 is released, but.... If I have Windows 7 with CMOS BIOS and SecureBoot disabled, then supposing that I could have problems with Windows 7, and I want to upgrade to Windows 8.1 again, and supposing that I have a Recovery Partition backed in a USB drive, what can I do for re-install OEM Windows 8.1 and the licence.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    As I said above...
..you will need to install essentially all of them to make that laptop work as designed.
..install the TVAP before any other Toshiba utility.

  • How to dual boot 2 HDD on p6-2490eo ?

     W 8.1 on 1 TB HDD
    UBUNTU on 2 TB HDD
    How to establish dual booting?
    Max

    Hi,
You might run into issues running UBUNTU on a PC that has not been certified by HP for UBUNTU.  You will need to research the hardware and determine if stable drivers are available.  Notice that I said stable.
I would suggest the following precautions and BIOS changes to avoid issues.
Create the external HP recovery media and backup your data.
    Disable Secure boot
Disable UEFI mode (enable legacy mode)
Unplug the hard drive containing Windows
HP Secure Boot Windows 8 Topics
If Windows boots up successfully then proceed with the UBUNTU installation.  However, be sure to unplug the hard drive containing Windows until after UBUNTU is install. When booting up, tap the ESC key and then F9 to select the boot device menu.
