How would I....?  (Event Handling)

Let me first start by explaining what I am needing. I am given a JFrame containing a JButton and 8 JTextFields (in the form of an array). Right now I let the button be clicked no matter what is in the fields. What I would like is to limit the button's availablility based on the fields' content. The fields are being used as a form to fill out and the button is being used to save the form. What type of event handler would I use to enable the button only if the fields' contents are not empty? I have added an ActionListener to the button but for that to work the button needs to be enabled. I would like to keep the button completely disabled until the proper fields have been filled out.

I'm not sure which listener is best for your situation, maybe a DocumentListener. Regardless, you will have to create a component of some sort that listens to all text fields for changes. When it detects a change it should look at whether or not all fields are empty and enable or disable the button. Implementing this is pretty easy, for example you could iterate over each field checking the length of the String getText() returns, but that wouldn't be terribly efficient, what the best solution is I'm not sure. I think I might just keep a boolean isEmpty for each field, then for each field add a different listener that modifies that boolean to true whenever the field is empty and false whenever it's not. Would be less overhead with checking every field then, you could simply have every listener call an "updateButton()" method that would check the boolean values and enable or disable the button if necessary.
This belongs in the Swing forum, post future Swing questions there, but don't repost this one please.

    hi,
    1)    You can make the method EH_ONSELECT as public and static and call this method in viewGS_CM/ADDDOC  using syntax
        impl class name of view GS_CM/DOCTREE=>EH_ONSELECT "method name.
                 or
    2)The view GS_CM/ADDDOC which contains EH_ONSELECT method has been already enhanced, so I can't execute such kind of operation one more time.
                         or
    3)If both views or viewarea containing that view are under same window , then you can get the instance ofGS_CM/DOCTREE from view GS_CM/ADDDOC  through the main window controller.
    lr_window = me->view_manager->get_window_controller( ).
        lv_viewname = 'GS_CM/DOCTREE '.
      lr_viewctrl ?=  lr_window ->get_subcontroller_by_viewname( lv_viewname ).
    Now you can access the method of view GS_CM/DOCTREE .
    Let me know in case you face any issues.

    Hi all,
    How can I create an event handler in OIM11g
    Thank You in advance.

    there are three component required to generate this
    1. plugin.xml
    2. EventHandler class
    3. eventhandler.xml to import into MDS schema which define OPERATION,ORDER..etc
    you have to zip the first two and register using register utility in <IDM_HOME>server/bin and then import 3rd one into MDS using WeblogicImportMetaData.sh

  • How to add event handling for a menu?

    hi,
    I have created a menu and few mneu items.
    for eachmenu itme , i did event handling and it is workign fine.
    it was like this
    menuItem = new JMenuItem("Exit",KeyEvent.VK_X);
    menuItem.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_X, ActionEvent.ALT_MASK));
    menuItem.addActionListener(this);
    menu.add(menuItem);
         public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
    JMenuItem source = (JMenuItem)(e.getSource());
    String s = "Action event detected. Event source: " + source.getText();
    System.out.println(s);
    public void itemStateChanged(ItemEvent e)
    JMenuItem source = (JMenuItem)(e.getSource());
    String s = "Item event detected. Event source: " + source.getText();
    System.out.println(s);
    now int he second menu i don't have any menu item and i want to do the event handling for the menu itself. any ideas how to do it. following is the code for the menu
    //Build the second menu.
    menu2 = new JMenu("Options");
    menu2.setMnemonic(KeyEvent.VK_O);
    menuBar.add(menu2);
    menu2.addActionListener(this);     //this does nto work

    You were on the right track. However, selecting a menu is different from selecting a menu item. MenuItem chucks an ActionEvent and Menu will send an ItemEvent.
    If you pile all action output to one actionPerformed method then be careful of your assumptions on what the source type will be. If by any chance the Menu has sent an ActinoEvent then your code will have caused a ClassCastException.
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class MenuTest implements ActionListener, ItemListener {
        JMenuItem menuItem;
        JMenu menu1, menu2;
        JMenuBar menubar;
        JFrame frame;
        public MenuTest() {
            frame = new JFrame("MenuTest");
            frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(frame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            menubar = new JMenuBar();
            frame.setJMenuBar(menubar);
            menu1 = new JMenu("File");
            menu1.setMnemonic(KeyEvent.VK_F);
            menuItem = new JMenuItem("Exit",KeyEvent.VK_X);
            menuItem.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_X, ActionEvent.ALT_MASK));
            menuItem.addActionListener(this);
            menu1.addItemListener(this);
            menu1.add(menuItem);
            menubar.add(menu1);
            //Build the second menu.
            menu2 = new JMenu("Options");
            menu2.setMnemonic(KeyEvent.VK_O);
            menu2.addActionListener(this); //this does not work
            menu2.addItemListener(this); // use this instead
            menubar.add(menu2);
            JPanel panel = new JPanel();
            panel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(100,100));
            frame.getContentPane().add(panel);
            frame.pack();
            frame.show();
        public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
            String s = "Action event detected. Event source: " + e.getSource();
            System.out.println(s);
        public void itemStateChanged(ItemEvent e)
            String s = "Item event detected. Event source: " + e.getSource();

    Hello,
    It looks like you are interested in the
    BeforeAttachmentAdd event of Outlook items. It is fired before an attachment is added to an instance of the parent object. So, you can analyze the attachment object passed as a parameter and set then Cancel argument - set
    it to true to cancel the operation; otherwise, set to false to allow the Attachment to
    be added.
    Also the Outlook object model provides the
    AttachmentAdd event for Outlook items. It is fired when an attachment has been added to an instance of the parent object. You can also analyze the attachment object passed as a parameter to the event handler. You will not be able to
    cancel the action in that case.

  • How to find event handler for save button in salesorders

    Hi,
    I want perform event based on save button in salesorders.Can you tell me how to find the event handler for
    save button.
    Regards,
    Brahmaji

    Brahma,
    you can find the component, view details by doing an F2.
    open the component, the view will be mostly an overview page i.e., the name ends OP etc.,
    But your method name will be mostly EH_ONSAVE, you need to find exact view.
    F2 does not come up properly for overview pages, you have to look into UI config tool preview and make sure sometimes.

  • How to set event handler dynamically?

    Hi all,
    Usually, we add event listener like this:
    myCanvas.addEventListener("click", onClick)
    How can I set the second parameter so that I can add click handler dynamically?
    For example, I have functions clickHandler1, clickHandler2, ...
    And another variable fname: String will contains value1, value2, ...
    Thanks and regards,

    You could do something like this:
    public function firstFunction():void
         trace("First Function");
    public function secondFunction():void
         trace("Second Function");
    public function callFunctionByName(name:String):void
         this[name]();
    public function addEventHandlerByName(handlerName:String):void
         this.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, this[handlerName]);
    this.callFunctionByName("firstFunction"); //traces 'First Function'
    this.callFunctionByName("secondFunction"); //traces 'Second Function'
    Let me know if that works for you.

  • How to add event handler in maximize window

  • *ACTUAL* event handling mechanism in java

    Hi there! Could someone please help me find resources that explain how EXACTLY the event handling mechanism works in java?
    My searches on google and java.sun take me to pages that explain how to code or something close to that. But what I actually want to know is how is all this handled BY Java- how does the event source or VM know how/when to fire and event? how the event is fired? how do objects keep track of the listener objects?...and all the background stuff like that.
    I've downloaded the Java source code, too. But it seems like an ocean to me to wade through. Would be a great help if someone could 'point out the right path'.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi there! Could someone please help me find
    resources that explain how EXACTLY the event
    handling mechanism works in java?My counter question is why do you care how EXACTLY the mechanism works? It works, and that's all most people need to know.
    How it works is an implementation issue, likely to change from release to release, or as more efficient mechanisms are discovered.
    But what I actually want to know is how is all this
    handled BY Java- how does the event source or VM
    know how/when to fire and event?Native peers attached to a component (AWT) or the frame (Swing) notify Java that an event has occurred in some way. (This will likely change somewhat from platform to platform)
    An AWTEvent is created to represent the native event (Swing requiring more overhead to locate the source of the event) which is added to the EventQueue.
    how the event is fired? how do objects keep track of
    the listener objects?...and all the background stuff like
    that.The above is done on a native thread - not the event thread. The event thread is sitting in the event queue waiting for an event to come along. It processes events in the queue and sends them to the object which "generated" them. This object informs each of its listeners in turn about the event.
    Objects keep track of listeners however they want. AWT objects seem to use java.awt.AWTEventMulticaster. Swing objects seem to use an javax.swing.event.EventListenerList. I tend to use multiple ArrayLists.
    Note that native events are sent through the EventQueue because they originate from non-event-thread threads. Often when specialising events, in particular sending custom events in response to, say, a button press, the event firing will be done in-place, since it is already in the event thread. Custom events that originate from outside the event thread are customarily added to the EventQueue with EventQueue.invokeLater or invokeAndWait.
    This is from inspection of the Java 1.3 source (specifically java.awt.Button and javax.swing.JComponent) and knowledge of the APIs.

  • View not copied or enhanced with wizard Error while creating Event Handler method in Z Component

    Hello Friends,
    In one Z Component (Custom Component), in one of the views, while creating event handler, it gave me error message that view not copied or enhanced with wizard.
    I am aware that in Standard Component, if we want to create the event handler method then we need to first Enhance the Component and then we need to enhance the view.
    But, in the Z Component (Custom Component), how to create event handler method in one of the views as while creating event handler method i am getting view not copied or enhanced with wizard error.

    Hi,
    Add a method in views impl class with naming convention eh_on__* with htmt and html_ex parameters.  I dont have have the system right now. Please check any existing event import export parameters.
    Check out do handle event method in the same class.
    Redefine that method.  Call that event method in this handle method. See existing code for reference.
    Attach that event to the button on click event in .htm page.

  • Is there a C# example of using the ExpressionEdit Control Custom Button Event Handler

    TestStand 4.1
    C# 2008
    I have added the event handler to the ExpressionEdit events as I would any event handler:
    exprEdit.ButtonClick += new NationalInstruments.TestStand.Interop.UI.Ax._ExpressionEditEvents_ButtonClickEventHandler(_ExpressionEditEvents_ButtonClickEvent);
    Next, I create the Event Handler using the syntax
    public void _ExpressionEditEvents_ButtonClickEvent(NationalInstruments.TestStand.Interop.UI.ExpressionEditButton btn)
    I get the following error when I try to build:
    Error 1 No overload for '_ExpressionEditEvents_ButtonClickEvent' matches delegate 'NationalInstruments.TestStand.Interop.UI.Ax._ExpressionEditEvents_ButtonClickEventHandler'
    I assume this means that I don't have the correct parameters or types in my Event Handler declaration but it matches the Object Browser.  Any ideas on what I am missing?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Try removing the "Ax." from your namespace qualifier as I marked below.  I think you want the one in just the UI namespace.
    Edit: well not necessarily.  Is your exprEdit variable declared as "NationalInstruments.TestStand.Interop.UI.Ax.AxExpressionEdit" or as "NationalInstruments.TestStand.Interop.UI.ExpressionEdit"?
    If it is an AxExpressionEdit then I think you will want your event handler to look like this:
    void exprEdit_ButtonClick(object sender, NationalInstruments.TestStand.Interop.UI.Ax._ExpressionEditEvents_ButtonClickEvent e)
