How would I install an old hard drive???

OK Folks,
Heres the project at hand
I would like to utilize my Hard Drive from my old 350 Mhz G3 (Blue and White)... 6 GB Ultra ATA/33 hard drive....
by installing it into my 467 Mhz G4 (Graphite) Power Mac....
Would anyone have a tutorial or some guidance about executing such an operation?
Many Thanks

It can be done. Your Mac is backward-compatible with that drive.
If you can install a memory upgrade without trashing your computer or injuring yourself, you can do it yourself. It will require a #2 Phillips screwdriver. An illustrated article describing many possibilities is here:
HT1815- Power Mac G4: Installing Internal Storage Devices
I see you have another post on this topic. You appear to me to have two distinct problems:
• Your mac will not power on, and the date has recently been going wacky.
This is most often caused by a dead PRAM battery. Remove the added Hard Drive and debug that problem first. Try the PRAM Reset. Use the procedure described -- press and hold the tiny button for a quarter minute, then wait at least five seconds before attempting a restart. Avoid momentary presses, they can wreak havoc. If not successful the first time, try it again a few more times. Plan on buying a new battery soon.
• If you want to use that drive in the long run, you will need to install it on the cable with the other Hard Drive. It will not behave properly on the CD drive cable. You will need to set its straps to not interfere with the other Hard Drive. But fix your startup problem first.

  • Macbook screen cracked. How to transfer files from old hard drive to new computer?

I had a 13" white macbook, but the screen cracked, and the computer wouldn't work anymore. I took it to be fixed, but they weren't able to fix it, so they gave me a macbook pro. I asked them to try and transfer the files from my old macbook to the old one, but they said that they couldn't, and gave my the hard drive and said I could have someone else try to fix it for me. How do I connect the old hard drive to my new macbook to see if I can get the files off of it? I don't have the old computer anymore, just the hard drive itself. Thanks!

Sorry, I don't understand all of this stuff. Do I have to buy a certain one for Mac? Or will any enclosure work?  Would this one do what I need? http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/startech-startech-external-hard-drive-enclos ure-with-integrated-usb-cable-sat2510scb-sat2510scb/10192449.aspx?path=9e9804b6f 287edbfe4f83d36c2a6aa71en02

how do i install an external hard drive to my powerbook G4?

Buy an external FireWire drive (and FireWire cable if you don't have a spare or the drive doesn't come with one). Then, just plug it in. Not much for installing.
If you mean replacing your internal drive, that's another matter entirely.

  • How to transfer history from old hard drive to new computer

So my motherboard on my old PC died. I therefore pulled the hard-drive from my old computer and patiently waited on my new toy to come in. Problem is, I didn't have a chance to do my weekly synch before my old system crashed. I'd like to get the history/favorites off of my old hard-drive, but I'm not sure how to go about it. The OS are also different - old PC was Windows 7, new is 8.1.
    Suggestions?

You need the places.sqlite file to restore history.
Note that this file stores the bookmarks as well, so you will lose bookmarks that you already have created.
The file structure in Windows 8 is the same as in Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
    *C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
The "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Window 7+ versions and the "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K are hidden folders.

I just upgraded my hard drive and now need to transfer the data from the old hard drive to the new.  I was told to use a SATA dock but I am not quite sure how to use one.  I thought it best to either find out how to use one or find out if there is a better way rather than going about it on my own.  How do I solve this quandry?

Click on edit, and then preferences.

  • How do i install a new hard drive using time machine

    Hi there
I have purchased a new 1TB hard drive for my Mac book pro (late 2008) model. I have time machine installaed on a seperate hard drive connected with an airport base station. I do not have the orginal snow leapoard/mountain lion OS CD or DVD. Can someone please tell me the exact steps to install the new hard drive .
    Thanks

You haven't inserted your new hard drive yet?.
    There's two ways
    1. install yourself
    2. or pay someone to install it for you.
If you want to do it yourself go to google and type in "install new hard drive for macbook pro". sometimes it makes a difference what model your macbook which is why i won't provide you a link just in case its the wrong one.
    Its very easy.
    1. remove all screws and the lid.
    2. remove screws from the black bracket which is holding your hard drive in place.
    3. unplug your hard drive.
    4. VERY IMPORTANT (A MISTAKE I MADE). make sure that you remove the external screws from your original hard drive as these screws are the one thing that hold and stabilise your hard drive and stop movement from happening.
    5. insert these external screws to your new hard drive (there are four screws)
    6. insert and plug your new hard drive.
    7. screw the black bracket in firmly
    8. attach lid and insert all screws firmly.

  • How do I Use my Old Hard Drive as a Portable Drive to Transfer and Back Up

    Hi
Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I couldn't find another topic area.
So I recently upgraded my hard drive on my Macbook to a 300gb from an 80gb and now I want to use the 80gb as an external drive like a USB pen (it's already in an enclosure so I can plug it in via USB)
What I don;t understand is how I can clear the hard drive of the stuff I backed up from my computer and How i can keep updating the hard drive without the information on it being erased.
I am looking to be able to transfer movies and music from my brothers iMac to my Macbook and vice versa as well as storing some word documents on it.
Any help will be gravelly appreciated.
    Thanks!

You should be able to do a complete reformat in Disk Utility. The utility calls this "erase" and gives you the choice of format. You might use MS-DOS (FAT32) if you want to swap files with PCs, but there a 4GB file limitation, which I've run across with large archived DVD images. Normally people use HFS+ if it's exclusively going to be used in the Mac enviroment.

  • How do I install my new hard drive?

I recently purchased a Wetern Digital Scorpio 250GB PATA HD for my Toshiba M35X-S114.  This was the drive recommened on the Toshiba Laptop Accessories page.  I physically instaled the new drive but can't figure out how to get it started.  I used the System Recovery DVD for my computer thinking I could install the original software on the new hard drive. The guy on the tech support phoneline said I could.  When I tried to use the recovery disc I got all the wall to the message where it prompts me to "press C for continue or A to abort".  When I press C, the cursor moves right below the prompt and just blinks.  The tech support line said the process may take several hours but I let it do this for for 3.5 hours and the cursor was still just blinking below the continue/abort message.  Is this normal?  Do I just need to be patient?  When I used the recovery disk on the old, original hard drive my computer was completely recovered in 45 minutes.  Oh, BIOS reads "none" next to hard disk.  I hpe this helps.

If the bios doesn't recognize the hard drive it means one of three things.
The bios doesn't have 48bit addressing support built in so it won't recognize a hard drive over 137gbs in size.  There is no work around for this.  The only option is to use a 120gb or smaller hard drive.  While the detailed specs for that model state ATA-6 it doesn't ensure that the bios does indeed have 48bit addressing support, although it should.
The hard drive is not plugged in all the way.  Try reseating the hard drive to make sure it is making a good connection. You might need to do this a couple of times.
The hard drive is defective.  In this case it would need to be replaced.
One thing to check is to power on the system with the hard drive installed and the drive bay cover off.  Put your finger on the hard drive to see if you feel any vibrations coming from it.  If not, then the drive is either defective or not plugged in fully.  If you do feel a vibrations it more than likely means the bios doesn't support a drive that large or there is some internal problem with the drive.
Until the hard drive is properly recognized by the hard drive you will NOT be able to use the recovery disk on it to restore the operating system.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • How to transfer music from old hard drive

I just upgraded my drive (same computer) and installed leopard. My older drive has my imported and purchased music on it. Running under Tiger. I can access the drive with a remote kit, so all files from the old drive are still accessable.
how and what do I need to do to transfer all my music library and purchased music/authorizations to the new hard drive?

I've tried doing that, and had an odd result. All of the names of the songs are added to my library, but when I attempt to listen to well over half of them, I get an error message:
"The song "__" could not be used because it could not be found. Would you like to locate it"
And indeed, the only music that shows up in the finder window are songs that will play. The very newest music seems to play, including things purchased from iTunes. Tech support said they can't help with the issue because of copyright concerns, but I just don't want to put 5 crates full of CDs into my computer one by one!
    Any thoughts?

  • How do you install OS after Hard Drive upgrade? Thinkpad T41p

I have a Thinkpad T41p with Window XP Pro on it.  I have a new larger hard drive for it, but I do not know how I will be able to install the OS on the new drive.  The laptop came with the OS already installed on it.  That will to be the case, of course, for the new hard drive.  So what do I do?  If you could point me to a step-by-step procedure, I would be most grateful.  I have installed numerous OSs, so I am familiar with how to do that from installation CDs.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    GKent

Just went through this process on my wife's T41. I did the following:
downloaded and installed the eval copy of Active@ Disk Image and Active@ Boot Disk (created a boot CD).
rebooted to the BIOS setup and in the security setting for the IBM Predesktop Area I selected Disable saved the changes and booted
rebooted to windows and usedActive@ Disk Image to create a raw image of the entire disk to a USB hard drive
Shut down and removed the original hard drive and installed the new empty hard drive
rebooted using the CD created by Active@ Book Disk and started the Active@ Disk Image utility
selected the Image to Disk option. This took the raw image and installed it on the new hard drive (this included the hidden partition as well as the windows partition
rebooted without the boot cd and logged in to windows
rebooted into the BIOS and reset the security setting for the IBM Predesktop Area to Normal, saved changes and booted
result is the same size partitions as before on the new 80 GB hard drive so I then ran Partition Magic to resize the Windows partition to utilize all of the remaining space on the disk (left the hidden partion in place - it is still bootable)
rebooted and I now have a 74.5 GB drive for windows with all of the installed software intact
I did plan on using the recovery option to reinstall the image to the factory settings since I had a few issues with windows on the original drive. Ran Rescue and Recovery and it could not find the restore images After much searching it appears that I will have to go out and buy the CDs (unless someone has a free download option)

  • How would you set up your hard drives if you had these to work with

    So I currently have :
    1 internal 1 Tb 7200 HDD
    1 internal 300gb 7200 HDD
This is all im using right now, but I also have a 3 TB external that I use to store media and also edit from. I was bringing the footage into the internal drives to edit from but space was growing thin.
I bought other drives to redo my entire hard drive set up while incorporating the old ones as well
    1 2 Tb internal 7300 HDD
2 250gb SSD (They are however not the same brand.)
If someone could please give an opinion on how they would set these up from scratch that would be swell, or you can also recommend adding in another drive into the mix as well.

    ok, the internals Im using now i can't get in to see the model numbers, but for the others they are;

  • How do I install a 3rd Hard drive?

I have a 2000 Quicksilver that already has two hard drives installed. My question is, now that I have purchased a 3rd hard drive, where do I mount it? I see an open space below the CD drive and ZIP drive, but no mounting bracket/sled. Is there a piece of hardware I can buy to mount the drive?

    Hi, widowmaker -
A G4 QuickSilver model, like all earlier G4's, has two built-in ATA controllers, one for each built-in bus. One provides connections for up to two internal hard drives; the other is intended to provide connection for the optical drive and the (optional) Zip drive.
The baseplate has three positions for drives -
The front position, #1, and the middle position, #2, are where factory-installed SCSI drives would be placed.
The rear position, position #3, is where the initial two ATA hard drives mount, using the included sled.
Positions 1 and 2 can also be used for individual ATA drives. The problem in adding a third (and even a fourth) ATA drive is the absence of a controller. The solution is to add a PCI card controller; if it is a single-channel card, it can connect up to two additional drives.
If you get such a card as an ATA/100 or ATA/133, 48-bit LBA compliant card, you can then use ATA (or PATA = Parallel ATA) drives larger than 128GB (the built-in controller on all G4's and the early QS models has a drive size limit of 128GB) - although OS 9 has a volume limit of about 200GB, OSX has no problem using large drives.
However, it may be of advantage to add a SATA PCI card instead; this will allow the use of SATA (Serial ATA) drives, which are becoming more common. The G5 and Intel models use SATA drives; doing this would allow future use of the drives in a newer machine.
Some folk have mounted a third drive above the optical drive, or even performed surgery on the Zip drive space to permit fitting a standard-size hard drive there, using the Zip drive's connection on its ATA cable to connect that third drive.
There are at least two problems with doing that - (1) on some models, that ATA bus is slower than the normal bus used by the hard drives; (2) heat dissipation - the internal airflow path is not intended to include removing heat from a hard drive placed up there, and so it may be necessary to increase the cooling capacity of the machine.
