How would one install OS X without OS X?

Hello there,
I was given a Unibody 13'' Macbook Pro from 2008 the other day from a friend. The hard drive failed and he got a newer model. I plan on purchasing a hard drive for it and use it myself, would become my college laptop. My question is, how would I install OS X on it? All the forums I've search imply that one already has OS X and what not. I was hoping to buy the Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade to Mavericks, or if possible head straight to Mavericks. Whatever seems best I'm looking for some help. Any ideas?

Hi,
I have replaced, swopped out, 'refreshed' a number of old mac hard drives...by:
buying new SDD for example, plugging this into a sata usb dock, plugging this to another mac.
Going to my purchases in App store and downloading Mavericks, as soon as it has downloaded do not update, quit the installer, plug in your new drive, format if necessary, go to your applications folder and click on the Mavericks installer, with another drive plugged in  you will get an option to install Mavericks on that drive.
Select your new drive, install, can take a long time as it is ruining via usb.
Once installed, you will be running from your new drive. Follow all the instructions.
Shutdown, unplug and fit new drive to the old mac.
If all is well the old mac will boot from the new drive.

  • "System Default" kind of wipe: possible? How would one do this?

Would it be possible to take an existing installation and effectively reinstall all packages, restore all configuration files to their default config as if on a new install on that program, and wipe all user data (probably not in that order) so as to restore a system to a kind of "first boot" setting but with your current package listing retained.
How would one go about this? Could one slip into a terminal, sudo rm -r /some/folders/here (what folders necessary?) and then use pacman to reinstall ... everything (what kind of command would get you that? something with a grep listing?)

The problem of using a backup or hard drive image of your pristine installation is that Arch changes pretty fast and a 6-month-old installation would need a bit of work to get up to speed.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldnt a pacman -Syu do most of the job?
Depends on what changed in Arch in the meantime, what changes you made and what do you mean by 'most of the job'.
Let's say you've made your backup a couple months ago and now you want to move from grub-legacy to syslinux, install KDE and try systemd. If you revert to said backup in a month, you will have to do a few important changes "manually" because at the time of that backup you were using grub, initscripts and e.g. Gnome.
Reverting to the "clean slate" backup, updating it and making a fresh backup once you've tested the new configuration shouldn't be much of a problem but it's not automatic. You may need to perform some manual conflict resolution etc. (see the home page).
This is exactly why I wanted to strip the system clean and let the programs act as if this were a new install, without changing my partition table, have to download 12 gigs of data, etc. Reinstall the system without a format. Some of these changes that needed manual adjustment have caused a bit of a headache, it would be nice to have a nuclear option without having to reinstall. Especially now that AIF isn't around anymore I'd have to have a second computer to tell me what commands to run just to get things going again...

  • In Lion, how would a user REPAIR disk without a disk to boot from?

In Lion, how would a user REPAIR Disk without a disk to boot from?  It's cool to download Lion from App Store, but I think they need to solve how they will repair disk without optical disk to boot from.  I have had to repair disk in with the disk utility around 5-10 times in the past.

Well it should be stupid, but people do it anyway not realizing it's importance later when something goes wrong.

I guess we shouldn't forget the recovery partition.  But why confuse the issue.
That does confuse the issue, a bootable DVD is for installing the operating system after a hard drive replacement, which also will include the recovery partition.
Recovery parititions are a great idea for Windows as it fails often, but hard drives fail more often in Mac's than the operating system.

  • How do I install OS10.4 without the disks

I have a older Macbook core duo which came with 10.4. I had to replace the hard drive but now the original OS install disk is damaged. The error reports scratches on the disk. How can I install the OS without the install disk? I tried installing Leopard from a disk but the Macbook rejects it. So it looks like I need to start with the original OS. Any ideas?

    It might run 10.6/SL...
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

  • How do i install adobe reader without installing products from google.

i dont like google, i dont like a bunch of worthless taskbars crowding my browser. so how do i install adobe reader without installing google products when you dont even give me the chance to say i dont want them?
It is unethical to force onto people products of any nature that they do not want. i do not want google products so by your installation for adobe reader automatically installing google products without my consent is unethical.

I don't understand the "forcing" part; the bundled software is clearly optional, and can be unchecked before the download.
Or using the download link that Michael provided earlier (which is posted at least a dozen times every day in this forum).

  • How can I install Adobe Acrobat without installing the browser extensions?

    Hello All,
I am a computer Technician at a high school and we have very strict browser requirements for different services. We need to use Adobe Acrobat to convert PDF's, and other tasks, and we need to use Chrome to open Adobe Reader files. The issue is that I want my 3 browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox) to open PDF files using Adobe Reader XI. All my plugin settings are correct to use Adobe Reader to open PDF's, but it either downloads a PDF to the computer, or opens up in the browsers default reader (Chrome does this), or opens up to a blank page with a blank error message. I went into the programs Internet settings for Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat and it's telling me the browser opens them up using Adobe Acrobat (With no option to change the setting). The problem is only solved when I uninstall Adobe Acrobat. Then I am able to open PDF's in Adobe Reader just like I want (but this gets rids of Acrobat). This leads me to believe that when I install Adobe Acrobat, there is a registry key or something that is telling the computer to open PDF's in browsers using Acrobat. My initial question is this: How can I install adobe Acrobat without linking it to the browser. I JUST want Adobe Acrobat as a program installed on the computer.
    Additional Info:
    - I build a computer image and use that image on several computers. This issue persists with all of the computers I installed the image on.
    - I am using Adobe Reader 11 (Now DC, but I am willing to use either) and Adobe Acrobat Pro CS3 (I think it's version 9?)
    Thanks for the help.
    - Charlie

I have pdf files in European languages and want to be able to enter non-English characters in the "find" function. How does one install other character sets for use with Acrobat Pro XI?

Have you tried applying the update by going to Help>Updates within Photoshop Lightroom?  The update should be using the same licensing?  Did you perhaps customize the installation location?  Finally which operating system are you using?

Just brought home newly purchased MacBook Pro 15"/Maverick/Retinal Display. To my astonishment, there is NO DVD slot! No one in the store told me about this missing feature. Intolerable, How does one install software? Insert CDs to copy for iTunes?Do I have to purchase an external DVD drive? Is one even available? What a crock!

I’ve owned Macs since 1990 (IICX my first), mostly desktops. Having had DVD/CD drives in all my previous laptop Macs since 2001 -  (2) G4 Powerbooks,  A 17” Mac Book Pro - and also inspecting a friend’s year-old Mac Book Pro which had the DVD slot - unless someone told me at purchase, I had no reason to know that the Retina display version of the 15” had NO DVD drive. ANYHOW, I fully intended to buy the non-Retina display version, because it was cheaper. Unfortunately by the time I got to the Apple store they were no longer selling the non-Retina display version; all versions were ONLY with the Retina display. And the fine distinction of a DVD vs. a non-DVD drive was not pointed out. So now I have to shell out an additional $80 bucks for an external SuperDrive.

How does one install page turning arrows in IBook Author?

    Hello Robert,
I don't think such a feature exists within iBooks Author but it is a feature within ePub.
So if you are viewing ePub books on an iPad the pages turn but if you are looking at books made with iBooks Author it is a page sliding.
I will stand to be corrected here but I hope this helps some what.
