HOWTO apply a vertical gradient with paragraph rules / underline ??

Hi,
i wasted half of my day to find a solution for this - but i cant find the trick!
I need a simple vertical gradient behind a header.. really nothing special - but i don't wanna use an extra text frame - first i work already in a larger frame and the gradient has to be applicable with a paragraph or character style.
To get a horizontal bg gradient i choose the paragraph rules panel - applying a solid stroke in height of the font and setting the color to a gradient.
..so far so good..
The problem: i can't find a way to turn the gradient vertical - all gradients are horizontal by default - when i turn the gradient in gradient panel afterwards - this won't apply for the paragraph rule (only for text boxes).
So pleeeaase - could somebody enlighten me by whispering the secret of vertical background gradients?! (for paragraph rules)
regards
Chris

You can easily put a gradient into type (with the T-box selected in the Color palette) or into the text box (with the ordinary Fill-box selected). Enter 90° or -90° as the gradient angle. Or drag the gradient with the gradient tool. Make a paragraph style of it with the gradient as the character color. Works o.k. for me or have I misunderstood something?

  • Paragraph Rules

    I've been supplied a document with paragraph rules manually applied, the problem is there are 190 pages and paragraph rules  appear on nearly every page, is there a quick way of changing the weights of all of  these or a simple script.
    Many Thanks
    Darryl

    This is a bit off the wall - but if you tinker with this I think it can work.
    Be sure to do this on a copy of the file
    You can select all the text and use File>Export and choose InDesign Tagged Text
    You can search for the Rule Above in the txt file and replace the value there.
    Best to set up the rule above weight you want to use at the start of the document so that's accessbile for you when open the TXT file.
    Then do a search for pRuleAboveStroke:
    And replace that Above Stroke value with the value from the start of the document
    You can then import that Txt file back to inDesign.
    (I did test this with bringing the file into InDesign as TEXT and GREP seaching for
    pRuleAboveStroke:\d+\.\d+
    And replacing with
    pRuleAboveStroke:0.500000
    To make all strokes .5)
    Not sure if that's a good idea though - seemed to work ok?

  • How to apply an InDesign Paragraph Rule above, but not when first in column

    How do I apply a paragraph rule "above" but not when first in a column. In other words, the rule above will only run if it isn't the first paragraph in the column (even if it appears in a multi-column text frame).
    Before you jump the gun: Rule below will not solve that, for various reasons.
    Thanks much in advance.

    Aha! Apparently totally!
    Here a similar way to yours with an anchored block. Copy it and launch this simple regex. Easy with no headache!

  • How do I create a vertical gradient in a table, not with an object?

    How do I create a vertical gradient effect for alternating rows in a table?
    I'm trying to get my table cells to alternate and look like this:
    Thanks,
    freecondomap

    Hi, BTJT:
    We are starting work on a large catalog project where we will need to change the gradient fill to -90 on every other row in the table - excluding the header, footer and first row of each table.
    How would you adjust the script you mentioned above to do this? and would the script work in Indesign CS5.5 versus Indesign CS6
    It does get a bit more complicated. Not super-complicated, but not as simple.
    The above idiom only works for all the rows in a table. If you want to do any specific subset, then you need to use a loop.
    But is it necessary that you change the gradient angle on every other row? Isn't it sufficient to set the gradient angle on all rows, and then apply the alternating gradient on alternate rows using the the alternating fills feature, as suggested by Jeffrey?
    I guess you also want to apply to...all the tables in your document? That would then be:
    app.activeDocument.stories.everyItem().tables.everyItem().cells.everyItem().gradientFillAngle=-90;
    Unless you need to be more selective? But I don't think you do?

  • Paragraph rules don't appear in pdf

    I have a problem with a paragraph rule. The rule is in a paragraph style that always appears on right pages (chapter opening). I set a negative indent so the rule extends through all the left page. It appears ok in indesign,…
    but when I export a pdf, the rule appears only in the right page, not in the left…
    The same happens when i generate a pdf through print command (even though the indesign document prints right in the printer).

    Unchecking "Crop Image Data to Frames" I had the same result. If I export the pdf with "spreads" checked, it appears right.
    With a drawn rule it worked. It'll probably be the solution, since in this layout the rule is always on the same position. If it was applied on the chapter title, it could change the position because of the title's lenght, and then it would be more complicated…
    It seems that it's simply the way the software works, there are some things you just can't do.
    Thanks!

  • Large vertical gradients not working like examples

    Hello guys, now this seems to be a very straight forward thing to do and there are loads of tutorials about the subject. None of them are helping me get this right though, and I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong...
    Im trying to create a simple gui component that has a vertical gradient, simple enough right... I create the sprite, and draw the gradient with beginGradientFill and a matrix with a 90 degree radian angle on it; but it stops working if the sprite has a long width, below is an exmaple of what I mean:
    package
    import flash.display.GradientType;
    import flash.display.Shape;
    import flash.display.Sprite;
    import flash.geom.Matrix;
    public class Main extends Sprite
    public function Main()
    var theWidth : Number = 800;
    var theHeight: Number = 100;
    var shape1:Shape = new Shape();
    var matrix:Matrix = new Matrix();
    matrix.createGradientBox(theWidth , theHeight, Math.PI*0.5, 0, 0);
    var colors:Array = [ 0xffffff, 0x000000];
    var alphas:Array = [ 100, 100];
    var ratios:Array = [ 0, 255];
    shape1.graphics.lineStyle(2,0xa1b0b6);
    shape1.graphics.beginGradientFill(GradientType.LINEAR,colors, alphas, ratios, matrix);
    shape1.graphics.drawRect( 0.0, 0.0, theWidth , theHeight);
    shape1.graphics.endFill();
    addChild(shape1);
    If I change
    matrix.createGradientBox(800, 100, Math.PI*0.5, 0, 0);
    to
    matrix.createGradientBox(800, 100, Math.PI, 0, 0);
    it works fine - but horizontally - why is it that applying 90 degrees the fill does not work?
    Thanks for your help, I really don't know whats wrong with this

    Hi Rob, I'm really confused, if I create a new action script project and use the code i posted I get this:
    As you can see its not going from white to black, but instead it just looks grey - although there is a gradient, it looks like its massive or something :S I don't get it
    Im using flash builder 4, I create a new action script project, in the as file I paste that code into the constructor and run the application.
    ps.. yes i know about the alphas need to be 1, it was a typo when i posted this, setting them to 1 doesn't seem to be my issue. Any other ideas?

  • Create automatic white gap/bar with paragraph style

    Hello,
    Thanks to your help and the Paragraph Ruler trick, I managed to get automatic title formatting (the grey background)
    Now, I would like to get automatically white gap as in line two but I can't figure out how to do it (tried with strikethrough but it's all over the text, you can't cheat).
    Any idea?
    Thanks.

    Here I am (sorry I didn't answer before, during the weekend i am not in my office).
    You didn't tell us why do you want to change the text box width? That could help us to give you a better answer.
    However if you need to have different text box width you can use this method:
    Only one paragraph style with only one rule column width, "vertical line" and grep style.
    Below one example:

  • Is there a Master or Paragraph rule that would allow me to edit fonts on many pages?

    I'm using InDesign CS4.
    I would like to be able to create a header on a Master that would control the font and size of font on each Header on each page.
    On each page, the wording is different, so there can't be wording...
    The Headings on each page have a different font than the font in the body of the book.
      Is creating a master the best way, or is creating a type of paragraph or paragraph rule the way to go?
    I feel there must be a way to make this happen - so if the font needs to be changed, it can be changed from a master or a rule, not having to go to each and every page...
    Thanks for your help, Lou

    What did I do?
    Not sure.
    What do I do?
    If you still don't have it sorted out, here are some steps to follow, with some assumptions based on info contained in the thread so far:
    Go to your Master Page and set up your header text frame. Type an actual line of text in there, even if it's just "Header goes here" or something like that.
    Format the text the way you want all your headers to look; font, size, etc.
    With the now-formatted text selected, go to the Paragraph Styles panel, (if you don't see it, choose Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles or press Ctrl+F11), and choose New Paragraph Style from the panel menu, (click the menu icon at the top-right corner of the panel to access the panel menu). This will open the Paragraph Style dialog, pre-populated with settings based on your text selection. Give it a name like "Header Left," put a tick on Apply Style to Selection and click OK.
    If you need a Header Right style for the facing Master Page, there are a few ways to get it. Here's one: In the Paragraph Styles panel, right-click on the Header Right style and choose Duplicate Style... to make a copy of it. Now right-click on the new copy and choose Edit Header Right copy... Change its name to Header Left, make whatever other changes you want to the style settings, (primarily Indents and Spacing > Alignment, I should think), and click OK.
    Now you can also duplicate the text frame you made in step 1 by copy/paste or Alt-Drag to the facing page. Put it where you want it and apply the Header Left style.

  • Paragraph Rules Run Too Short Under Text

    I've noticed that when I select a paragraph rule to run under some text (instead of the whole column) that it runs a little too short if the text has been tracked. If there's no kerning or tracking, the rule runs the width of the text just fine. But soon as the text is stretched out the rule doesn't quite extend the entire way under the text. Is there a way to fix this? I have InDesign CS5 for Windows (ver. 7.0.4).
    Ed Hedemann

    @ Lilia,
    Forced line breaks are special characters, too.
    But here's the good news. I tested your theory this morning about not applying the tracking to the last character and it DOES work for all alignment options, and it does not move the last character's position, so it is viable, in fact excellent, when applied using the GREP style. So for headings (or any other tracked paragarph that needs a Rule Below set to text width and where the text is tracked with a positive value) you want to create a 0 tracking character style and apply it to the last character inthe paragraph using .$
    The tracking value should be added to the basic character format of the paragraph style:
    The character style should do nothing but assign a tracking value of 0:
    And that character style should be applied as a GREP Style like this:
    No special characters and comletely automatic, and the text can be edited at will, or the formatting in the style can be changed and it will continue to work.
    Well done.
    By the way, welcome to the forum. If you want to learn about GREP, and you should, both as a teacher and an obviously talented user, I highly recommend Peter Kahrel's primer from O'Reilly: http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596156015.do which is a real bargain at $9.99 and available as PDF, Mobi or ePub. GREP is incredibly powerful, and actually not terribly difficult to learn (and the Find/Change dialog in ID has most of the commonly used metacharacters in the dropdowns if you have trouble memorizing). There are many users here who will be glad to help you learn GREP, including Peter K, if you run into a stumbling block and post a question.
    I'm also going to update my bug report from last night to include your workaround. It might point the engineers toward an easy way to fix the code so none of this will be necessary someday.

  • Using FindChange to control paragraph rules

    Is there a way to turn ruleAbove/ruleBelow on and off using the FindChangeByList script?
    If the active paragraph style has a ruleBelow defined but turned off, it seems I should be able to turn it on with a statement like this in the FindChangeList.txt file:
    grep     {findWhat:"(some unique string)"}     {ruleBelow:true,changeTo:"$1"}     {}
    This does not throw an error, but it doesn't work for me.  None of the paragraph rule properties can be applied: offset, line weight, etc.

    Indeed, it can't be done directly with a findGrep (or findChange). Look at the dialog box in InDesign and you'll see that the paragraph rules are not included. Since the JS Find features leverage the technology that provides the find features to the interactive user, it suffers from the same limitation.
    In a script, you can get around this by doing the find (rather than a change) and then iterate through the results setting the paragraph rule you want.

  • Vertical gradient wipe?

    Hello,
    I really want to use a vertical gradient wipe between two panning shots but I can't seem to find one in FCP. I have applied the normal gradient wipe transition, but the gradient is horizontal, and the movement is from top to bottom. I need a vertical gradient moving from right to left.
    Does anyone know how to achieve this?

    Ok,
    I tried the Gradient Wipe from the "wipe" folder again and it did work, sort of. What had me confused before is that there is another "gradient wipe" in the "Quicktime" transitions folder, and that only wipes from top to bottom or visa-versa.
    Now, the problem with the hard edge is a strange one. I am working with XDCAM EX footage (1080i) and when apply the transition, the preview looks fine but it needs to render. Now, when I render it this hard edge comes in, and the whole transition looks wrong, the parts of the screen in transition are yellowish, and at the end of the transition and a hard edge goes across the screen. Completely useless. I also have XDCAM HD footage in the same timeline and when I apply the transition to 2 XDCAM HD clips it works fine.
    To make matters stranger, I just tried adding the "Quicktime" gradient wipe to the same 2 EX clips and it works fine, only it wipes vertically not horizontally.
    I am pretty baffled to be honest.

  • How can I make a paragraph rule transparent?

    I have a requirement to use a paragraph rule but I need it to be transparent. I cannot figure a way to do this or via any other technique in indesign. In reality I want them to be included in a character or paragraph style.
    Your help is appreciated. I am on CS5.5 and an indesign veteran of some 12 years now...

    My method is a bit of a tricky method, but I think it works.
    Select the text frame, and choose Edit>Place and Link Story.
    You are given a Loaded Cursor with identical text.
    Place this in the exact same location and send it to the back.
    Give the text at the back a Paragraph Rule above, to suit. And give it a white rule.
    Change the Back Frame transparency to suit.
    Then Make sure your original text frame is on top.
    When you update the text in the main frame - then you can update the text via the Links panel so the rule behind suits
    Here's a file to test it with

  • How do I apply a linear gradient to an S shape?

    Hi
    I recently created an S shape with the pen tool that is quite large in my photoshop cs4.  I would like to know if there is a way for me to apply a linear gradient so that it follows the path of the S shape perfectly.
    The effect should cause one of the sides of the letter S to actually fade into black (the gradient is a transparent to black gradient colors).
    Is this even possible with my Photoshop cs4?
    Ricky

    Hi,
    Thanks for the response. I have found a way to accomplish exactly what I want.
    I use a stroke, set it to 'inner' style to the bottom most option, play with side and choose gradient
    I played aorund with these settings on here and got it working perfectly.

  • Gradient with no opacity is not working correctly

    I was wondering if anyone had any idea about this problem that I've been having. For some reason when I create a gradient that goes to zero opacity on either end it gets all scattered.
    It was working fine and now I've reinstalled it in Windows Vista 64bit. I remember I had this problem the first time I installed it as well but then I turned the update on and it just went away before I really cared too much. Now I've got the update on and went and downloaded the 10.1 from the website and it's starting to bother me.
    I went and got the latest drivers for my video card which is a Nvidia 8600 gt, but I'm leaning towards the card being the cause of the problem, but any ideas would be helpful.
    Here is an image of how this gradient is supposed to look created using a black to white
    http://theebom.com/picturehost/gradient-fine.jpg
    Here is how it actually looks using a black to white (0% opacity on the white)
    http://theebom.com/picturehost/gradient-broken.jpg
    I had someone ask me if the dissolve blend mode was on and it wasn't, both of these gradients were applied to the background layer.
    And to all you Vista nay sayers I use Vista 64 at work and I've never seen anything like this there before.
    Thanks in advance for any advice

    The only thing I changed since I've installed it is the scratch disk settings and those have nothing to do with it. I don't see a gradients options per say, but I have been through all the preferences and I turned on 3d hardware acceleration and flipped all the other switches and moved the sliders, I didn't notice any change. If there's another options menu I should be checking let me know (I have CS3 and I think they combined the options and preferences into one menu) And the blend mode in the layer palette is set to normal or to nothing (test is mostly on the background).
    And the only problem I'm experiencing with the program is this issue. Everything else works exactly as expected and I haven't noticed long think times or anything. As far as I can tell it is specifically a gradient with a loss of opacity.

  • How can I create paragraph rules below a heading in InDesign CS5?

    I have created a rule but the headings are appearing sometimes with a rule both above and below and sometimes only below...the display is inconsistent.
    I'd be very happy if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong here.
    Here is a screenshot - note the red "Course type headings". If it's too small to see please visit this link https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17454370/paragraph_style_problem.png

    THANK YOU!!!
    I now have it displaying both above and below, but cannot get it to just show below. I have tried unchecking 'rule on' for rule above, but nothing changes.

    update: I get it; I need to play with inserting and deleting new paragraphs!
    Thanks so much, Bob.
